How do you protect your Dolls from pets?

Jan 9, 2015

    1. So I hadn't even had my Bory 24 hours and set him down on the table beside my chair. I turned away for HARDLY a minute and I turned around to find my rabbit, Monkey, chomped a piece out of his nose!!! UGH!!!! (She is doing okay so don't worry this was a while ago but I was scared) I REALLY had to watch out but it was so weird because in all of this time that was the first time she did anything like that!!!

    2. Well the problem is that it's a cat. I have a dog and she can't jump that high so I don't have to worry about her jumping onto my bookshelf. (a massive sized one for my Bjd) You should talk to your roommate about her pets and ask her to take care of them so your possessions don't get ruined. I can only suggest getting something so high up the animal can't reach it. Like a bookshelf. :)

    3. I have a ferret, dog, and a cat. My ferret likes to scratch and dig at my dolls. My dog thinks they're chew toys and will snap them up if left in his reach un-attended and my cat could care less. But i have other valubles to keep my cat from and cats are the most difficult pets to keep things fron beacuse they can get so high!
As for my solutions. When im not using my dolls they are kept in their dog/cat/ferret proof carrier. Except my big boy who cant fit and has no box.
for him. Its still pretty simple.
to keep my ferret away i put my boy up out of his reach and throw a blanket over him, out of sight out of mind. For dogs and cats. They just aren't allowed in my room. Simple. when i go to bed i look around. Any animals in here (aside from my now caged and sleeping ferret)? Nope? Kay. *closes bedroom door* bedtime. Same drill when leaving for work. Check no animals, Close my door all the way. And off i go.
I also try spraying my dolls with icky tasting stuff to keep dogs from biting but i found it'd get all over my finger wen i played with them and i'd end up eating it by accident eventually xD

    4. I currently have three ferrets and a dog but I have yet to encounter any issues with them. I never leave my BJD unsupervised in a room where my pets are roaming, same goes for the children of my boyfriend. It's common sense really, if you don't want something harmed then keep your eyes on it. When I can't supervise the BJD gets placed in a room where pets aren't allowed, for me that would be upstairs. Our dog or ferrets aren't allowed to go up to the bathroom or bedrooms. I figure it's a bit more difficult with a cat that's not even yours though. I suggest just locking up your BJD in a safe metal box for instance when you're not around to keep an eye on it.

    5. Mine are in a glass cabinet. I have both cats and dogs, and while one of my cats is great with the dolls, the other three would chew on anything. It was expensive, but that double whammy of worry about my precious dolls being destroyed and my precious pets poisoning themselves makes it absolutely worth it.

OP, I'm glad to her your roommate realized she needed to rehome that poor animal.

    6. I don't have any dolls but I do have expensive and rare figures, and I assume it would work the same with dolls. I have two cats, they are very well behaved, but sometimes curious. I have glass display cases where I put everything, and sometimes I just close the door to my room so they can't get in. If something is on the floor I put a thin glass piece in front of it, or something similar. I've never had a problem, then again like I said my cats are usually very well behaved. Good luck!

    7. I usually just put my doll up high so my dog can't reach it.

    8. That... aha, that's an issue I plan to work on when it comes. :sweat The dog won't be a problem, he's a tiny chihuahua and can't jump on anywhere that he could mess with the doll, but my cat is a curious one, and she loves to nibble. Anything that looks like it might be interesting she decides she needs to take a chomp on. She a shedder too, and I'm worried about her covering the doll clothing with her fur. Ah well; guess I'll have to wait and see how it goes. Maybe she'll actually behave for once. :P

    9. i have two dogs and a rabbit, so the rabbit mostly stays outside and doesn't come into my room (where i keep my dolls). the dogs are allowed into my room when my dolls are on the shelf out of their reach but when i have my dolls anywhere else the door is closed so the dogs can't come in.

i recommend you close the door to the room with your dolls in at all times with a cat or any pets really, to keep your dolls safe from cheeky pets.

    10. My dog is a lot more interested in socks. lol

    11. Since there's always a concern about the hair when dolls and pets are anywhere near each other, might I suggest investment in a lint brush? It's different from a lint roller, and pretty much magic at removing pet hair, dust, and just about anything else that might settle on doll clothes. (They're kind of a must-have if you've got a pet shedding everywhere, and work wonders on wigs and plushies, too.)

It's not protecting the doll from the pet itself, but it's something to help with an inevitable consequence of having both in your household.

    12. Keep them in high places where they'll be safe, or put them away where my pets can't get to them.

    13. I guess I am lucky, my dog is old and not in any way interested in my doll. The most my dolls got was a sniff when pulled from the box.

    14. ArteLune: It doesn't harm the dolls, then? :) Good to know.

    15. I don´t need too :3
My cat is not interested on them at all X3

    16. My kitties aren't allowed in the same room as him, one of them loves trying to groom anything fluffy, and i rather she not give his wig a bath >w<

    17. My cats like wigs v.v

I just keep the wigs away from them along with the dolls and if they get too close for comfort I start yelling and the point gets across.

Now they don't bother my dolls at all.

    18. For now I'm just keeping my doll in her box, but eventually I'll free up a shelf and put her on there. Out of reach of my kitty. So far though she's not shown any interest in her. Possibly chewing on our Warhammer models put her off plastics. ^^;

    19. Our cats are geriatric, so I just keep my girl on a high shelf and she's pretty safe :)

Just a heads up though, mint is *not* a great idea for dissuading the cat - some types of mint have a similar effect to catnip and that could backfire spectacularly. Other types are quite poisonous to cats, so I'd stick with citrus if you can! More info: http://pets.thenest.com/cats-dislike-smell-mint-10432.html

      Edit:
Ooh, I just thought, it might be useful to consider using some of the training techniques that are used to keep cats from scratching furniture or jumping up onto countertops? Cats who scratch things they shouldn't or jump up where they shouldn't can often be dissuaded by putting something on the surface that they dislike their paws coming into contact with. Double sided sticky tape or 'sticky paws' often get used, or the more low-tech options of cling film or silver foil taped over the area. Worked wonders when the girls kept jumping up onto the kitchen counters - might be worth trying something similar on the surface where you keep you dolls? It looks pretty weird for a while, but after a bit she should stop trying to jump up there, and you'll be able to remove it.

Alternatively I'm sure I saw a place that does a motion activated air spray thing, that sends a short burst of air at the cat when they jump up onto the surface, which is usually enough to give them a shock and mean they jump down again. They'll try it a few times probably, but they'll then stop as they associate jumping up there with the air spray. I think I'd fret a bit about using it with our cats, as their age and associated lack of coordination means they'd probably hurt themselves jumping back down in surprise, but if yours is a young, healthy cat, I'd expect she'd be fine.

Sadly cats are a little awkward to train, as they associate consequences with the person present rather than the action they did that provoked the consequence. Telling a cat to stop stop whatever it is doing and putting it down usually results in a cat that will not do the thing until you are not present!

    20. I had my cat tentatively reach out a paw and try to "pet'' my Venitu the day I received him, while I had him on the bed posing him and letting the resin smell air out with the fan. He has this weird affinity with human skin and likes to ''pet" me in the morning when i'm sleeping (what a creep, lol), so I guess the same sentiment applies to my doll in his mind. He is not declawed, however, and I would rather not get claw marks on a new and rather expensive doll. I quickly and firmly said ''NO!" and hit my hand down on the bed. He scampered off as per usual. :XD:
