How do you protect your Dolls from pets?

Jan 9, 2015

    1. One of my dogs is absolutely terrified of my doll, so I don’t have an issue with her. She really hates anything human shaped. She’s scared of my cosmetology heads too, poor baby.
My other dog, however, will eat everything in sight. I usually put my doll on a high shelf to keep him out of reach. If I’m leaving, he goes in his original box under my bed

    2. I have 2 cats and they're pretty curious about anything new. But because I only have one resin doll I keep her in her box and take her out only occasionally. While I do have her out I try to keep her on safe surfaces where it'd be hard to drop her, like the middle of the table. For taking pictures I just scare away the cats lol but cannot stop watching her and just leaving her with them. One of my cats loves to chew on any plastics so who knows what she could eat. She's chewed on a cloth doll's hair once.
If I ever have a lot more dolls I figure I'll have to put them inside a closet or something. But for the first few I think I'll just keep them in their boxes. I'm actually thinking of reorganizing everything here at home, I wish I had a big drawer for my dolls to live in with nice little rooms :P

    3. My tiny Pomeranian girl loves my dolls she likes to cuddles with my Jaeii and Sunho haha I don’t let her near my other dolls and she’s very well behaved for a one year old lol

    4. I guess I'm a lucky sod here because my cat ignores my dolls entirely. The most he will ever do is sniff. He's a well behaved kitty in general and only cares about bugging people, not objects. He darts through them to get to his safe hidey hole occasionally though.

    5. I keep my cats out of my room anyway, because I also have a bunch of figures and other stuff they like to mess with. When the dolls do come out they're more interested in attacking the wigs than the dolls. I keep all my spare stuff in a cabinet so even if the cats do get in my room they can't get to any of it (and they're usually more interested in going in the closet anyway).

I have a dog as well, but he's older and luckily not much of a chewer. He doesn't tend to mess with things unless they smell like food.

My advice would be get a nice ikea cabinet/bookshelf with doors to keep and/or display your dolls and their accessories in, and make sure you can secure the doors so animals can't get into it when you're away. Also making sure there's plenty of toys around that they can entertain themselves with helps, as does playing with them regularly so they're less likely to get bored and start destroying stuff for attention.

    6. Three of my cats are geriatric and they ignore my Crew for the most part. The "kitten" (He's half Maine Coon, so he's pretty big) simply sees the ones he can reach as a way to get to the basement door, since I have two sitting on a kitchen chair near the folding basement door. All he does is occasionally jump on their chair to reach past the toddler gate we have blocking the door. I tell him to get down, and he usually does.

My other dolls are either up high, or in a bedroom that we keep the door closed for most of the time. All four cats wander in and out of that room, but only when we're in it. I've only had one mishap where a cat chewed on a doll when I was early in the hobby, but it only put a couple of toothmarks on the doll. I can't even remember which one of my Crew it was, since I think I ended up replacing their hands after a bad fall where three fingers broke off.

I'm glad my cats ignore my Crew. :kitty1:thumbup

    7. I have many dolls in displays throughout my home (I love to have them out where I can see and enjoy them all the time.) I also have several animals (all rescues) and this means I have to keep an eye on things routinely, but it’s worth it to be one big happy family! Fortunately, there was only one serious mishap when a newly adopted stray kitten chewed three of one doll’s fingers off!:doh But he immediately outgrew that behavior and I later replaced the hands. Then a newly rescued puppy became enamored of my Fairyland Realfee’s skin wig, snatched it right off her head and utterly destroyed it. Unfortunately, this doll’s character absolutely requires this kind of wig and she’s a doll I like to have near me at all times, so I came up with the idea to create an ITA bag to display her. I found this one at Luts lutsdoll co.,ltd. It’s a fun idea and I can’t wait to get started!:)

    8. A dog that stays with us once or twice a month might chew on things randomly, so I never leave dolls out in her reach. I say might, because it is indeed quite random. She has been chewing on a candle, so I suppose she could try a doll just for the taste of it. But she only does it if she is left alone in a strange place and feels insecure, she's not gonna like grab the doll from my hand and destroy it. She does have a way of greeting things by jumping at them and poking them with her big wet nose though, and that's where I need to watch out (poking and jumping is a Kelpie habit I hear).

    9. My dog Finn Jr, a 4 year old American Cocker Spaniel now knows he must get along with my dolls. He has learned to leave me alone when I'm playing with my dolls and never ever mess with my toys.

Happy Birthday to me. Happy Chinese New Year.

Above is the URL of my dog with my big boys on my birthday. I'm happy Finn smiles. That was my birthday.

When Finn was younger, he almost chewed off Yo-Midi Reisner's precious pirate hat! Luckily, nothing happened. I snatched back the hat. Finn did however destroy one of SD17 Ryoma Sakamoto's boots, I am heart broken. That is, was and will be the only piece of LE original outfit that got damage my pet dog. I can always replace the boots but actually not because that was the original default that he damaged. He never damage any other piece of BJD item again. I was notably very upset and he felt it. Now, he knows that he has to behave like one of my dolls if I were to love him! That is.....sit still, pose, smile when he sees that camera.

    10. My dolls are placed to special bookcase (without books ofc)

    11. Hi everyone i have a qurstion for all pet particulerly cat owning doll owners about how to safely display your dolls. i am looking into cabinets and book shelfs but i don't know what brands are well suited for both big and small dolls. please help

    12. IKEA! I have a Hemnes cabinet for my crew (holds about 20 SDs on stands depending on how tightly you want to pack them in) with a middle shelf that’s holding Nendos and tinies atm. Friends have also used the Billy bookcase with the glass front doors. Basically, you want a design with glass doors and wood/faux wood (not glass) shelves.

    13. I have a dog, so I don’t know if this applies, but I keep my dolls in a room with the door shut mostly. She had been trained not to bother dolls, so they’re still safe when I’m working on them or just have them hanging out in the same room. I still don’t leave them in her reach unattended.

    14. I second Ikea, but it depends on your animals honestly. For example, with our cats we can leave them on tables, but not on shelves. The cats think that shelves are like their cat tower and try to get up on them but they've learned that tables/counters are a no go. I could train my cats to leave shelves alone as well, but it was easier for me just to leave my dolls on the table in the craft room instead. If your animal has a thing for perching/investigating and will climb up on things I recommend something with a door to keep them out, otherwise just about anything with shelves from Ikea will work.

    15. I use the Ikea Billy shelves with glass front doors! It's highly customizable with shelf heights and pretty good size. I like to have my dolls at vision height so I use the bottom for other storage like clothes and props! I mean my cats have never actually shown interest in my dolls but I hate not knowing when I'm in another room or out of the house if they will be on the floor when I come back :o
This is an older pic, now that I have more dolls I have them on stands throughout it, but it worked great for both a "mini diorama" type set up and the current standard display type.
Remember to face it away from the windows though! Don't want the UV on your babies!

    16. I’d recommend some sort of enclosed display case if you’re worried about curious kitties that like to explore small spaces. I like them because of the added protection from dust, humidity, and pet hair. The one I have is this IKEA Fabrikor metal & glass display case, where you can adjust the shelf heights, and easily install LED lights for cheap. What I also like about it is that it has a lock, which is useful for anyone who wants to keep their dolls extra safe from curious little hands. :3nodding:

    17. Basically anything with a door that your animal cannot open is fine! Just treat it like any other thing you'd like to keep out of their reach.
Plus points when you can put it in a room where you can close the door.

Otherwise I can second the Ikea lines. Especially Billy (not too expensive, can house big dolls easily when standing upright, small ones too if you use the included boards), Hemnes (very sturdy, but more expensive, looks a little more sophisticated), Pax (extremely deep, can be used for putting even big dolls in a small diorama, however no doors that are see-through...pretty much for when you need space AND total safety), Brimnes (can be bought with drawers at the bottom to store clothes and such), Havsta (has a deeper set top part, and a more protruding bottom part).
There is Detolf (a full glass case, I have two but honestly am not a fan cause they feel too flimsy and they need to be propped up or else the doll basically visually stands on the floor), and the mentioned Fabrikör above (more stable, and nothing is standing on ground level).

    18. I have 2 cats who have been - for the most part - pretty well behaved around my dolls. My dolls sit/stand on top of a wardrobe I have. I would like to get all of them on stands sometime soon. I find that if my cats can't SEE an opening, they leave it be. Problem is one of them found an opening. Luckily she just stood there but I think she knows if she gets up near the dolls, mommy will get out of bed and have to pay attention to her. She likes their shipping boxes a lot and sometimes sniffs them when I am dressing them or changing wigs but it's more of a "pet me not that thing" kind of thing.

My other cat used to think one of my tinies' wigs was a toy. Often found him on the ground and his wig a foot away. But he's stopped coming into my room ever since he brought down a 9 pound statue on his paw and busted the statue AND his own foot.

That being said, I second an Ikea bookshelf with glass doors. I have a bunch of off topic collectibles in one - if I could convert another one to holding my dolls, I would but I like my open air concept - just easier to get out and play with them this way. However, if your cats like to open doors, that might not even be safe haha!

    19. I got this cabinet from IKEA:

I'm lucky in that my catsaren't interested in the dolls (except curling p on the laps of my rag dolls) so I don't NEED to keep them behind glass, but Ii liked the cabinet and it's not too deep, front-to-back, so it doesn't stick out too far into the room, plus sliding doors don't need extra space to swing out into the room either.

    20. Don't let my cats to go to the room with dolls without me.
