How do you store your doll's clothes and shoes?

Dec 16, 2004

    1. I store my doll things like Jolarocknrolla. The wigs are in the hair nets, with cardboard around them, inside a zip-lock bag. Each clothes set is in a ziplock bag that's flattened, so it's almost like it's vaccumm packed. That keeps them from getting wrinkled, now they only get wrinkled when my dolls wear them.

    2. I put my doll clothes in ziploc bags then put them in a bin. For bigger stuff I put in big freezer bags and for clothes that don't have a match I usually put pants in one bag and shirts in the other.

My shoes and wigs both live with my doll bin, which you can guess is becoming a bit of a mess so I'm looking to replace it soon, but I just leave my wigs in a open plastic bag and leave my shoes/accessories in a small box.

    3. I put my wigs on top of plastic bottles, not the most pretty site, but it lets then hang. I think thats what most common way to store human wigs too, hanging I mean ^^

    4. I purchased fabric zippered boxes from IKEA--about 18x10x6. One has all the girl clothes sorted and stored in plastic bags. One has all the boy clothes. One has the wigs, again all sorted and stored in plastic bags.

Shoes are divided by gender, each in their own small woven suitcase.

The containers look good and are stored in an open oak unit in the family room. A visitor would not know they are full of doll clothes.

It works well except the girls box is way too full!

    5. Easy! I don't have extra. :XD:

If it doesn't fit on my doll or go with their outfit, I sell it and/or don't buy it. I don't like changing clothes/wigs/eyes.

      I'm weird, I know. ;)

    6. I just have a small rolling cart of plastic drawers. I keep all my extra resin parts in there too, so they take up ALOT of space. (Euclase claws, they're quite massive.) It's really disorganized, I have wigs and eyes and clothes all thrown together. Fiber wigs are in plastic bags at least, and I don't have much else that can get damaged from getting mussed around in a drawer.

    7. I dont have a whole lot of doll clothes really, so i just keep them in the bags they came in or ziploc bags and store them in those craft photo boxes you can get at craft stores. I have four different ones and store them according to character. All of this characters stuff goes in this box, etc etc. Since my characters dont wear similar things it works, otherwise i would put all tops in one box, pants in another. And i have one box for accessories/wigs/shoes.

    8. I'm another one who handles things like Jolarocknrolla - plastic drawers are great for keeping things sorted into categories (shirts drawer, trousers drawer, shoes drawer etc) but I also make a point of keeping each piece of an outfit in a ziplock bag to keep everything together and unwrinkled - works perfectly!

    9. I bought a modular Ikea "Billy" bookcase in white. I had enough floorspace in my bedroom to put in three units, or a total of 120cm across. One unit is 40cm wide, the other 80cm and the units are designed to screw together so the finish is completely seamless. I also included the open "height extension units" all the way across to maximise storage space. The best thing about these modular bookcases is they are not very wide (about 30cm) so they don't take up a big footprint of space - they hug the wall nicely.
I chose the glass doors that have a cardboard panel in the front which I then covered in a really pretty floral fabric that matches my bedroom. It's this fabric of large roses on an ivory background from the "French Hat Box" range by Tanya Whelan. This keeps the doll stuff neatly out of sight and also prevents ambient light and sunlight penetrating to where I store my dolls when I am not having them out to play with them.

At the top of the bookcase in the open height extension area, I have placed six decorative boxes. I spent a few days covering cardboard Ikea boxes in white paper then making them pretty with scrapbooking supplies. I have labelled them and divided them to store wigs and other supplies in. The wig boxes are labelled: "Big Girls", "Big Boys", "Little Girls" and "Tiny Girls" and the other two boxes I have labelled "Equipment" and "Paperwork".

Inside the narrow half unit on the end is more wig, shoe and clothing storage space. I used these narrow Ikea boxes for shoes and underwear/tops/sweaters. You can stack four one on top of each other. To tell which box is for which gender/size of doll I bought sheets of vibrantly coloured 3D flower stickers and the boxes are colour-coded with these flowers. I remember that the clear flower means boy's wear and the pink, blue and purple flowers are for big girls, little girls and tiny girls respectively. A few bigger boxes in this part of the shelving unit contain things that are difficult to hang such as skirts and hoodie tops. Again all boxes are colour-coded.

To store eyes I bought a small set of Ikea wooden drawers that is designed to fit perfectly into the Billy shelving space. I also store hats, hair things and small accessories in these drawers. Every individual drawer is also colour-coded with the flowers so I know whose is whose.

In the wider part of my unit which is 80cm across I have strung a narrow curtain rod (also Ikea) across the very top of the shelving unit to serve as a hanging rail. This is where I hang larger clothing items such as dresses and coats. I was unable to purchase clothing hangers that were wide enough at the top to go over my curtain rod so I ended up studying the beautiful beaded hangers Musedoll sent me as a gift when I bought some outfits there once. They are made of pearlescent beads strung on wire and I ended up finding and buying the exact same beads in a craft store, the correct gauge wire in the hardware store and I sat down in front of the TV over several nights and hand-created about thirty pretty beaded hangers. They are exactly the right shape and size and nice and sturdy, yet decorative at the same time. I am a crafty type of person so I really enjoyed the process of making them and recently bought enough supplies to double the number to 50 or 60.

In the rest of this side of my bookcase I have left two spaces high enough to store and display my MSD sized and smaller dolls. I made sure I bought furniture that wasn't too wide to fit into this space. I have a Robert Tonner Betsy McCall bed, a Gene bed and am seriously considering this American Girl Doll sofa as well. Even though it's made for much larger dolls it is actually quite small in measurements and proprotions and would fit nicely, I think into the narrow bookcase space.

On the lower shelves I am storing doll boxes and face-up supplies. I have a very narrow space (since the shelving spaces are completely adjustable) where I have put the little girls' tiny toys and plushies.

I really am happy with my decision to go with Ikea. Everything fits together perfectly without wasted space as it is designed to fit this way. Also, it is not hugely expensive to buy the Billy units and accessories. I put the whole lot together all by myself including the shelving units, hanging the doors and putting the drawer units together, so it is not difficult to do. When the doors are closed on my bookcase all that is visible are the pretty door panels that meld the bookcase into the decor of my bedroom and the six boxes that I made pretty by decorating them. The space is highly orgnaised inside with enough storage room plus display space for my dolls, furniture and accessories (though admittedly they are all MSD sized or smaller). I love having several different types of storage - big boxes and narrow boxes, little wooden drawers plus the hanging and shelf spaces. Having such a pretty, organised and fun place to store my dolls and their bits and pieces actually helps keep me motivated to make it stay that way and I actually really enjoy sorting through new purchases and finding a place for everything. I am not a naturally neat and organised person, so this is a big advantage for me. When I first got into this hobby I made the decision early on I had to get organised and stay organised so my new hobby wasn't going to create a huge amount of clutter and mess in my life.

    10. "Order"?! :o What is this "order" of which you speak?

Really, mine sounds like yours. Wigs have a plastic bin that they regularly jump out of and run away from. The MSD clothes have their own little plastic bin. The MSD Girl has her own big ziploc baggie. And the EID clothes are ... piled in the box that the first special outfit came in... :sweat
I did make a little closet out of a very sturdy box - ran a pants hangar bar through across the top to hang doll hangars on, and that filled up so fast, only the shirts that absolutely need hung up, are in there. Along with belts and ties draped over the "doors".
Shoes are clustered together according to size, in a box.
The rest? Big Rubbermaid bin. :)
When I say all that, it sounds organized, but... it sure as heck LOOKS like chaos!

    11. I fold things, and put them in these. Shoes go in one drawer, wigs in another, accessories in another, and the clothing itself is divided into drawers that are labeled with the names of each doll that the clothing "belongs" to.

    12. I really don't keep them in order at all... xD
      wigs, clothes, eyes...
much like my own clothes they are thrown all over the place in my room
      Typical Teenager~
but I do have bins IM SUPPOSED to be using according to my mom xD

    13. I'm so so on being Organized for my dolls, I have all the Mini's sharing a Plastic Container the boys share one and the girls have there own, The bigger dolls the Couples Share with there other half and my YoSD has his own. Wigs I separate the SD and MSD Wigs same with there shoes so I don't have to dig. A box for other random dolly things. All in all I have about 13 Plastic Containers for my doll clothes and what not Yikes. But having them neatly folded is another thing lol

    14. Oh geez. We really have known each other too long... cos I was just about to say that EXACT thing!

If I didn't have two other doll-ists here in the house "helping" me with the doll clothes they'd be nicely folded and stored. My 4-bin rolling cart (Bed, Bath, and Beyond? canvas drawers) works really well when things are folded. Wigs are kept in nets (USUALLY...she says, snarling in Lizardbreath's general direction) and in lingerie bags to separate sizes. Boots and "stuff" (you know, spare weaponry, what have you) are in a couple of hinged wicker baskets.

      Mostly it works pretty well.

Until the days where we have triple-decker wholesale "let's change clothes!" fests. Phew. ;)

    15. I store everyting in it's original packaging. So all wigs are stored in their nets, cardboard rims and ziplock bags. All the clothes are folded and put back into their bags same way i got them. And then all that gets piled up in the dollfie boxes. XD

    16. Well... I used to put their clothes in their individual boxes, but then they didn't fit. So I made a sofa with a lift-up seat and storage down there. But then that filled up and I can't find anything in there, so I'm considering something else. I don't live in a large space, so I don't think I can do something like Valentinegirl, although I think that would be ideal. I don't yet know where my dolls will end up living. I just moved and they really don't have anywhere at all. But I'd like to get some rolling drawer units that I can label and stack and put in the closet or something. And that way I can take the whole unit over to the sewing machine or to the TV to play.

    17. I'm just getting abit of a wardrobe started now so I'm buying what I need to be organized... in the meantime:
Wigs: only 2 spare, Luts is kept in wig net, SWW Furwig is furwig and just flopped on top of the other.
Shoes: In my MSD boys room on the floor (next to the chest with his spare hands :D )
Clothes: Nicely folded and somewhat organized by type/doll size. All in one big floral box.
The few accessories I have that aren't room furniture are in there as well.
I'm going to look for baggies and such tomorrow to help with wrinkling/potential smoke smell -glares at father-/ my OCDness.
Maybe I'll find a nice drawered bin or empty my old arts and crafts one~
I have most of the original packing for my dolls clothes but alot of it isn't airtight :C

    18. Kiyakotari, your way is just amazing!

I don't have this problem, as my kids don't have too many stuff; therefore I simply keep the clothes they're not wearing at the moment in a transport bag. As for the only wig without a head, I've placed that in a bookcase which has doors. No dust, no flattened wig because there is nothing squashing it ^_^

    19. Funny how I don't have much doll things (yet) and it's already kind of becoming a mess since I just shove everything in my closet... :sweat
But yeaah I was planning to get those plastic drawers and label each section like Kiyakotari did. : ) Shoes in one drawer, clothes in another, etc. Though I've been wondering if storing shoes in little fitted shoe boxes would be less of a hassle than plastic bags ...and clothes are folded to prevent them from getting wrinkled, but at the moment I also keep them in their original plastic packaging and that gets kind of troublesome when I change my doll's clothes frequently ... hanging them up would solve this problem but it'd be a pain when I have to relocate or something... hmm.

    20. This, too! I make sure to store wigs in their packaging, so that they don't get tangled. The ones that came second-hand (for which I don't have the original bag/box/net/etc), I put in Ziploc bags.

But unless it's a very large/expensive/complicated/multi-piece outfit (such as the Volks LE kimono sets I have, or my Jagger Stone Chic suit), I don't keep clothing in original bags. I just make sure it's neatly folded. Since the drawers are clear plastic, I'm not worried about them staining the clothing or anything.
