How Long Before You Named Them / The Importance of Naming

Jun 15, 2008

    1. i think it depends on the person, but, for me, i'm an over-planner, and i'm already thinking of possibilities for names, while i most likely won't even have a doll for a good few months at the very least.

it's kinda sad, but it makes me a bit happy internally because i'm promising myself i will get a doll that way. >_<

but i will be waiting on a "backstory" though. 'cause that can't be decided, i think, until i actually order something...

    2. Tossing up letters you like is helpful for picking out a name :) I also agree that looking through nationalities is helpful nwn

If there's any talent I pride myself on having, it's my ability to name things XD I've never had an issue with it; everything just seems to name itself X_X; All my fish just...got names while on the car ride home, and my dog's name was just spur-of-the-moment "oh, I need a name!" =O

My doll was especially easy because he's modeled after a character of mine n_n So he already had a name all picked out~

    3. I was searching E-bay for a doll and I saw a Narsha Doll. As soon as I saw her I knew I had to have her. I saved her picture on my computer and for some reason I forgot what her mold name was (I'm not good with names, especially uncommon ones) and named her Natasha. Thus I named her before I even bought her because it took a week or so for the auction to be over, haha

I shall call her Nattie for short I think.

    4. I picked out Mari's name while I was waiting for her to get here. So it took a few weeks. I'd played around with a lot of options for her, but I kept coming back to this one. It just seemed to fit.

    5. It was about three weeks before I named my doll. nothing clicked. I think it's better to wait and let it come naturally, than quickly giving him or her just any name to that they've atleast got a name. you might pick some random name and then come across the PERFECT name, but he's already got a name and it's stuck, and calling him somehting else feels weird.

I also think you have to get to know the doll first. my doll almost named himself. I wanted to call him Kenzi, but I waited and the name Hikaru popped into my head... hadn't really known what it was so I found the meaning and it was perfect... now I can't imagine calling him Kenzi

    6. I haven't bought my boys yet, but I've already named them. And I haven't even started saving for them yet. 8D Hahaha.

Have you decided on his nationality or his personality? That might help. If not, you can always make a name up. :3

He could even have a codename or something. :3 Maybe he already has a name and you have to guess it. =P

    7. In my case I had a friend who had already gotten her's to help me name my first boy. We'll see if he likes the name and keeps it when he comes home this week. :p

    8. Two of my boys had their names before I even got them. Ollie's name I didn't come up with til after I had had him a few days.

    9. I had their names, personalities and coloring in mind before I even decided what mold to purchase. It would be impossible for me to choose a doll without some character already in mind. There are simply too many molds to choose from! So when my darlings come home, they'll already be full characters.

The names I chose though, I've discovered, are ones that have evolved over time, coming from favourite books/movies/people/etc and developing into names that hold meaning to me.

    10. I pick a name when I look at them before ordering. Or I pick a name, then match a face to it.

Techno, was a planed out idea before I matched a doll to the idea.
A pink cat girl. *instantly hated by the masses*
Noooo It's not what you think!
      *cower*

Yi-daihye. was a name based off of one of my role play characters. A Korean mafia leader man. :D I thought since the name had lots of memories behind it, with meaning, it'd be a great name for a doll-child~
      [Yes, Yi-daihye is a woman's name /swt ]

    11. I never name my dolls before a get them.
I try to name them as soon as possible.
Usually I have the doll in question on my lap (on the day of arrival) while I google baby names until i find one that really clicks >_<

    12. I chose Naomi's name a few weeks before she arrived. I looked on baby name sites for anythign that caught my eye. I had a few names picked out, but judging by what I saw of her on the site, she kinda looked like a Naomi to me. Until she arrived I just called her by the name of the model she was.

    13. I'm still waiting for my girl. I probably won't have her until Christmas, but I'm still having trouble coming up with a name for her. I don't really like her name 'Marianne' from bambicrony, but I think she needs a lady-like name. Good luck naming your doll. I use babynames.com a lot to help with names.

    14. I pretty much come up with a name, just pops into my brain, after I order the doll. I have to say the two times I simply couldn't come up with a name, even after the doll arrived, I just didn't feel I was bonding with them and I sold them pretty quickly. I do love picking names though.

    15. I have the same problem with my obitsus right now :( Just cant come up with my names. First i wanted a japanese name but now i think i will give them korean ones ^^

    16. I read this book once when I was little, it was called The Hunt. Anyways it had a big underlined thing about the importance of names and that "names have power" and "not to hand them out freely". Since then I have always felt names were very very important. Even if it is a doll.

    17. This sort of thing all depends on the person with the doll. For me, naming a doll isn't all that hard for me because I write an awful lot so I'm am always coming up with character names and what not. And I know a lot of people do that with their dolls, they give them a personality of their own, and that includes the name. Something that would best suit the look they were going for.
I think the name is a big part of actually owning one of these dolls. At least it is for me even though I don't quite have one yet, but I don't think it matters how long it takes a person to name their doll. Take as long as you see fit so you find the right one. I know dolls aren't quite like having pets, but changing the name every so often because you found out that you no longer liked the name you gave them to begin with is slightly annoying.

    18. I've had some of my dolls since late last year and they still don't have names. I still think it's important for me to name them eventually. I don't really care what others do though. I'm more than happy to say at a meet "what a lovely cp, bobobie, elfdoll, etc.

    19. Having a back story sometimes helps. That way the name is decided usually before the doll is chosen.

In your case, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Get to know him. Hold him, pose him, try on clothes if you have them, and most important of all (to me anyway) talk to him! You will soon get the feel of the doll. He will start to 'speak' to you in return. You'll start notice little things about him. He may be shy, outgoing, playful or serious. But soon you'll get a feeling for his personality. Then a name will come to you. Some name will be a perfect fit!

Of course it's unproven at this time whether or not dolls send us their names telepathically, but I wouldn't doubt it!

    20. heh. its funny to have only just found this thread as im having naming issues!
Alex was named about 8yrs b4 i discovered BJD. hes a character in my oh-so-ongoing manga ive been working on forever. i feel like this doll (kara klum) was made for his character, and was he Alex from the moment i saw his pic on dollmores site:aheartbea. Kimi and Lucifer have been around almost as long.
the whole reason i got into dolls to make my OCs come to "life" and so far theyre perfect.

however...i just ordered a B&G Sapphira...ive wanted this doll since it came out but couldnt justify an elf cause i dont have elves in the story. so now he has only a vague character, and NO NAME :o
i want to name him an "elvish" name, but as i dont know elvish, its proving to be hard. he was just shipped today, so unlike my other dolls, im waiting until he gets here to find out what his name is...maybe he'll help me out :sweat
