How Long Before You Named Them / The Importance of Naming

Jun 15, 2008

    1. I buy dolls with a character already in mind. Usually it's one of my characters from the roleplays I run but on the off chance I buy a doll without him or her having name, I can generally make one on the top of my head, otherwise I take words I like or a phrase and put it into different languages and make a name from it =)

    2. I may be the oddball of the bunch, but I don't feel the need to name my dolls anything other than their default name. Soah will be here in a few weeks and I couldn't imagine using any other name for her. I think sounds beautiful, just like she is. Next on my list is the Elfdoll Wu and I think that's a great name too.

Honestly if I had to name the doll I think I'd go crazy with all the choices :sweat

    3. xD Well, it's different with each doll, I think.

My first doll's name, I decided about two months before I got her...

I was introduced into BJD at Otakon, and fell in love. My sister told me to get down what I wanted in a doll, so I planned everything down to the facial expression. So, naturally, her name was the first to get down. :3

My other dolls...usually their name comes after I've seen them and decided that I wanted them. Like my DZ Megi, when I saw a picture of him, I wanted him desperately.

For the next week or so I pondered who he would be, and came up with the name Trinity, or Trin, for short.

    4. I don't even own a doll yet, but the ones I've picked to work towards are already named. I had ideas for characters before I started looking, and just looked for molds that fit my ideas. The names are kind of inspired by/taken from my family (ie. the name I would have had if i were born male, my youngest sister's middle names...) because I suck at naming...

    5. I chose mine a good while back and I'm still waiting for my boys to arrive. I think a name is pretty important because it helps to define your doll's personality. If they don't have a name, you tend to switch things about them alot. So, with that being said, finding a name you like is important. Try going to a baby name website and search meanings or names that you like. Then you can either mix and match of change the spelling to find one that works for your doll. :D

    6. I started naming my Patrice months before her purchase based on her role in my life. But did not finally decide till the time of purchase and after bringing her home. It was important to give her a name that had meaning to both of us... which is more important than how long it takes. My decision was made eaiser by giving my girl a long name that consisted of 4 names.

    7. To be honest, it's just like naming a kid. At least, that's how it feels for my fiance and me. When we first got Marie and were in the car with her after leaving Volks, we tried thinking of names. It was kind of awkward and cute because at the time my fiance was my boyfriend and the situation is what I imagine first time parents feel when they have their newborn child. I suddenly said, "Marie...Marie Contesa...." and we just suddenly acknowledged that that was her name and it fits.

Now, my fiance is about to adopt his own BJD and has started making a list of names for her. But to be honest, even with a handful of names at hand, you can't really settle for one unless it really fits. So yeah, not naming yours after two weeks does affect the bonding process, but once you find a name and it fits, you just know that it's right.

    8. that's an adorable story. ^^ my boyfriend has gotten to that point while waiting for my doll with me. he's seen me change my mind about names and occasionally sits with me and discusses names. we consider how the name fits the image I have of him in my mind. when I mentioned Dante or Baldur, he even said "i don't know, just be careful..if his name is too unusual he might be teased about it.." it was cute, like he considered it as his son's name. Which I guess is a good thing, since after I decided to name my Apollo "Nuada" from Norse mythology, I caved and ended up initiating a Prince Nuada minimee GO. So Nuada was out. My bf helped me go through Norse god names and we decided we like Hoath, taken from Hoth/Hodur, the blind god of night. My Aleister is going to be Loki, so why not. XD

of course, it will probably change as soon as I get Apollo in my hands. XD

    9. I did'nt buy Shoyo (catgirl version) yet, but want her so much.
her name would be Miharu, and came in my head because i was thinking about the name's Sakura, Sayuri and alot more, but i found the name Miharu it's from the anime girls bravo (if i think clearly) and if i get Miharu i will buy her a pink long wig, so i can see if that is nice on her^^

    10. Oh! This was long history as I gave him the name. And what did not sort out only. I had long lists, probably the names 20-30 I sorted out exactly. And then thought - in fact he for me vampire. And a first-ever vampire was called Victor. Pleased him. Now I him affectionately call Vityusha.

    11. For me it varies. Example: My first pullip a Papin I kept reffering to as Pinky Head even though I had a name for her before she arrived but PInky Head just stuck. My Souseki pullip still doesn't have a name then again I haven't taken her out of the box yet but I love her anyway. My custom pullip who was named by Papermoonpixie her creator which I forgot then got renamed Crystal a year later. I also write long lists of names before I choose but I always seem to go with one of the first names I think of so I guess I shouldn't even bother with the list but I do anyway.

    12. Isabeau was so named because when i held her for a while she looked liked the character out of Ladyhawk the movie. the new girl has not told me her name yet but has asked to have hair and clothes before she will tell me

    13. I feel a little different from you, in the sense that I can't name one until I bond with it.

Maybe you just need to assign a temporary name to him until you fully bond.

    14. I'm in the same boat. I like a lot of the names they came with, sometimes I shorten them, but most my doll kept their names, I could not give Liu a better name it really suits him. (It doesn't mean they don't have character, each has their own look and style)

    15. I think I went through a couple of names before deciding on Seimei as the name of my boy. I usually think of a name ahead of time along according to their personality (even with pets and such), but it all comes down to when they actually arrive. Luckily, the name fits perfectly.

    16. I'm still awaiting the arrival of my first 2 bjds ~ and while I've a pretty firm grip on their personalities and the type of clothing they would wear...and have even ordered new wigs and eyes for them I have NO idea what their names will be. I hope it won't take too long....I've had a pair of Obitsu 27 cm boys for 3+ years now and they only recently present their names to me...I fear for my MSDs:?...they'd better be personality plus and let me know what to call them before I resort to THE CAT and THE PEEVED ONE :|

    17. I think it's been about 7 months and my msd boy still has no name. It's really just bonding issues, I've been changing his clothes and wigs and faceups, but I haven't really gotten it right yet. Of course when I first got him my mother wanted me to name him right away, but I told her I just can't do that. My sd girl I named in less than a month, but I don't know if it was because she was my first or what. I also have a shall DoT on the way, but I don't name before I see them. Naming for me has to come naturally with bonding.

    18. Chen CHANGED HIS NAME, and I'm ticked.
He refuses to be either Guy or Chen, and Vic seems to fit rather, but I still can't find a name. It'll come to me some day, but I'm rather frustrated. I feel as if I'm not bonding right.

    19. I gave my dolls names before they even had arrived. It was easy to name two of them and more diffucult to decide the names for the two others. :doh River was the most difficult to name and I had several options which didn't feel right. Finally I decided to name him after River Phoenix. Now I can't even imagine him with a different name. :)

    20. i dont have my doll yet and ive already named him:)

i understand why people would want to wait but for me id never wait longer thean a day or two after getting the doll or i think it would be a lot harder to bond with it

      its like a psychological thing

like for example on silence of the lambs and other horror movies the killers call their victims IT "IT rubs the lotion on its skin or IT gets the hose again lol" and when the family talk to the killers the detectives tell them to say the victims name as much as possible, cuz when something has a name its real and there are more feelings attached

      im rambling

so unless your actually naming your doll IT i think you should try to get a name either before he arrives or soon after:o
