How Long Before You Named Them / The Importance of Naming

Jun 15, 2008

    1. I've had my boy since June 13th, and I STILL don't have a name for him. Its driving me insane.

    2. I see a lot of people saying they already have the name for their doll picked because of a pre-made personality. I have a character in mind and I've been focused on finding a mold that fit. I finally found one and now I'm saving up.

Then it was brought to my attention that the name of the character might not fit the doll. When most people hear the name they think of something up beat and happy and full of life, but Pipen is rarely that way. He not emo, but he's not all smiles all the time.

I've been worried lately that I'll get all of these Pip like things but when he gets here he wont like the name Pip at all. Then I would be disapointed I think. :sorry

    3. I take my time--I just can't seem to name my doll before she arrives. When the doll is in my hands and her little personality can shine in my eyes is the moment I try to name her. I have lists of names I enjoy, exotic names, and pretty words that may be nice for one doll or the other, but the doll chooses her name and chooses it when she wants. It's not up to me. ;]

My Shiwoo has yet to be named and she's several weeks old and that's simply because she hasn't found a name she loves just yet.

    4. Aaah ha ha ha... names... Um, I kinda gave mine a stupid name and changed it later >_>;;; from Saherdra (everyone's reaction was: "...hair dryer?" It made me think I had a speech impediment ;_;) to Nishtel (which I hope is final. no last name yet. I want her to be vaguely related to one of my sprawling fictional families and haven't decided which one. Maybe I'll make up a new one for her XD) She had such a loosely defined character in the first place that it wasn't even that big a deal ;___; I need to write a story about her or something... nail down her character a bit more...

But yeah. I really like coming up with unique/fitting names for my fictional characters and the same applies when it comes to dolls... and I've learned the hard way that for me (but not everyone, judging by this thread), that means not finalizing their name til they're here and I've had a little while to stare at them and stuff.

    5. Nova had her name for about a month before I got her first incarnation. I think Versailles was the same. I've had my Yugiri for almost a week, and there's two names I'm thinking about, but I'm going to wait until his wig comes in before I decide.

It's a little awkward to have a "nameless" doll, but hopefully it won't last long.

    6. I actually knew the names of most of my dolls before I even bought their head sculpt. The only one I don't have a name for....is the blue fairy tommy....and I'm going to sell him because I am not bonding with him at all. He is a bit goofy...but he needs a better home where someone will give him the attention he deserves.

I think names are very important because the name will become their identity. So it's not something that everyone can take lightly...or wait too long before naming their dolls

    7. Shasta's name was fairly easy, as he was named after a mountain (I love volcanoes) and a character in C.S. Lewis's A Horse and His Boy. I chose the name partly because my mom liked it, and I wanted my parents to have something familiar when he came, since he was my first doll. Rachel, now sold....was not Catherine. She was Rachel. We never bonded, but that was okay, I was like a temporary place for her, and we were both cool with that.

Tatterhood? Oh boy. A WHOLE lot of names fit her. I can't decide on one. I don't want to start calling her something that will end up being not right. She isn't anything like the sweet, innocent naive girl I expected, and that has really changed a lot of things. Originally planned as "Lassen" as a "someday maybe get this doll" , and then Morgwen when I ordered her, she might be an "Emily".
Names are frustrating and important. =___= Character dolls are easier, I guess, but I never had any luck with that.

    8. It took me a few days to choose a name for my boy the first time (before his upgrade) and I do feel like naming them helps the bonding process. Even though he is the same character to me, I may end up changing his name due to the upgrade, just to make my family feel better about it. They have trouble calling and accepting him as the same.

All in all, yes, naming is important, even if they just get called by the mold name.

    9. I knew what the name of my doll would be before I chose the mold. I looked for a doll that I thoguht suited the name I had in mind :)

    10. Everyone except Kyuubi had a name before they ever arrived :3 Then again, I had a lot of time waiting for the other three to think names up.

    11. All of my dolls (and future dolls, most likely) have already had names set up for them long before their arrival..except for my Juri-A head. And thus far, because I hadn't anticipated his "landing", he still feels a bit like a stranger to me. Hopefully, however, that will change..

    12. lmao octobercrow. XD i love your post. You're right, there is a certain link or attachment a person has to their name. It's important to keep in mind though, some killers WANT to know their victims. It puts the murder on a whole new level, a whole new level of tragic. And remember, Hannibal himself came to know his victims very well, even learning their life story. So it all depends on the person, their motive, and the degree of psycho they are. :3 My understanding is that the more..."in tune" the killer is with the victim, the more satisfyig their death is.

"Only in their last few moments do people show you what they're really like."

However, you've inspired me to make a character called "It". xD He will be emotionless and have amnesia. XD

    13. lol thats a good idea!!! i used to write about a character i called no face or something along those lines, she had a face but it had no emotions, i dunno why i wrote about her i just like creepy stuff and thought it would be fun =]

anyways i wanna see IT =]

    14. sometimes my girl has a name before i buy her. Other times I have to physically see her first.

    15. I personally have my beloved characters already created, and then I search for dolls that hook me in and let me know that they're the resin shells for one of my boys. So I always have names first and once the doll is home ( or even ebfore he arrives ), he had already become the physical form of my character. So I guess for me, naming is very important. I don't ever want to bring a doll home and have no idea who he ( or perhaps she ) is.

    16. I have decided the full name of my doll on the day I had placed the first payment. It was very important for me, because if I hadn't choosen his name before, I would have just ordered "a doll". With his name he really came to life - naming him is just like fill him up with soul, that's what it feels for me :)

    17. I know what I want to name my first, and most of my intended to-buy list, but I'm always wondering if a) the name won't fit or b) I'll want something totally different and unusual that I want to name my real children one day but fear their wrath like Deer or Poppy. Ah, dilemmas.

    18. Rodion was named before he arrived. His dealer sent a photo so it was easy to get an idea of what would suit.

Ha-Neul was going to be called Ha-Neul before he arrived but when he did, I decided to keep the previous owner's name, Atsushi. This lasted a while but he slowly became mine after a bit of style adjusting and a new face-up so he's Ha-Neul now.

Orlando just seemed to suit the name, it was almost instant.

Chris (who is on layaway) is intended to represent a character from my novel (in progress) because the doll's facial features match his very well so that's how his name came about.

    19. I have my first guy for around 2 weeks now and at the moment I call him "Nathan" since I always liked this name. But for sure he'll pick new name soon.

I'm mainly naming dolls while read about some interesting character in a book or manga. It helps a lot since you could also give doll piece of personality along with a name ;)

    20. I've had my doll for exactly one week today.

I have called her Apple (her mold) since before she arrived. I also had a "real" name picked out for her before she arrived - and after I saw pictures of her (the actual doll I was buying - not an ad pic)

I've had several people ask me when will I name her and what will I name her - and although I have the name Madeline for her, it just seems that Apple is the name that is staying/sticking.

Both names suit her, I think, but I have not officially christened her yet.

      We'll see.

There is another doll on my wishlist, and if I should ever get him, I know already what his name will be.
