How Long Before You Named Them / The Importance of Naming

Jun 15, 2008

    1. Naming is the hardest part for me. Sometimes I wish that when the dolls arrive, a voice from the heavens would boom out and say, "This doll's name shall be XXXX... and it shall be good..." but alas I have not gone insane from MSC fumes yet. Until then, I play around with names until I find one that fits right. Often I can't have a name for the doll unless I see him in person.

    2. I kinda like saw the picture of Angelregion's Dana first, and the next day I discovered myself thinking about what to name her when ( not even if XD ) I bought her. Then a few days later I found myself thinking about her using a name, Miu, I couldn't even figure out when I had started doing so, still I won't definitely call her that untill she arrives though, dunno why actually ^^;

    3. My doll was named long before he came home, most likely because he started off as a story character of mine...

I don't think it's that critical to name them right away, because they do have a name...they've just choosen to keep it from you for now. ^ ^ When the right name comes along, you'll know! As long as you don't go around calling him an 'it' and all, it's not a big deal. And even then it's not THAT big of a deal, but I'd never do that.

My dad used to call SeNii an 'It' and it used to drive me nuts. It was very depressing...

    4. All of my dolls come with their names ready, since they are all pre-developed characters, so to speak. But I do have an IH SooRi, and for some reason, I just can't find a character to fit him or a name that suits his personality. I don't even know what his personality is yet, and I've had him about a year now.

But it doesn't bother me; I'm just looking forward to the day when I look at him and suddenly think 'Oh, so that's who you are.' :)

For people that have trouble naming their dolls, I don't think they should worry about it too much. It's no good forcing a name onto your doll just for the sake of it. I've tried that, and it doesn't work. It's better when a name to just pops into your head naturally and when you least expect it. ;) It will always happen eventually.

    5. I've yet to have any dolls, but as a story writer, I know who my characters are. Weirdly, the doll I'm saving for doesn't have a character. Or he didn't till an hour ago. I just heard it, the name said on TV, and I knew it was him. My soon to be boy will be Sylvester - Sly - when I get him, or maybe a variation on it, but the second I heard it it was perfect.

If you're having trouble, I'd suggest www.babynames.com; but instead of looking up names, think of words and look up name meanings, like 'dark' came up as 'Darcie' among other things... or make up words! That's how Eloriquel and Adelai came to be (a list of names you like, whenever you hear them, is great for authors... uh-oh going OT)

    6. Mine all had names pretty much right away but I don't think they're that important. I have three girls: Anais, Liz and F-34. I refer to them as "Anais, Liz, and Patience." I think it's easier to remember Patience's name because she's the only one that didn't have one pre-assigned to her. I guess, for me, the names are more of a placeholder so I don't have to call them #1, #2, etc.

    7. I had a dream and there was a name so i think I'll mane him that but i won't decide until I see his face (FCS). Once i had a rabbit and i decided the name to him before ha came but when i got him I saw that he didn't fit in the first name so i changed it ;)

    8. I have had one doll for over 2 years and the other three about 6 months or so. I did not have a name for any of them except recently for my minifee Shiwoo elf, the name Leaf came to mind, so Leaf it is. I have 3 more to name but feel that the name should come to me instead of trying to create a name. A name should capture or define the spirit of the doll.

    9. I'm waiting until they're complete before I name them because their personalities might change over time or what have you.

    10. Emma was named in an instant. I saw her and thought "OMIGOD EMMA?!" and it just...stuck. Even mum thought "Emma" when she saw her. I swear, Emma just told us as we picked her out :)

Jeong I have yet to get, but his name has been jumping a lot since I've yet to actually get him (as just said XD)
His last name is sticking, which is "Jeong" since I decided he's half Japanese, half Korean (to explain his eyes/facial shape etc). But his first name has jumped from Takuya to Teruki for the past ....month-ish? Yeah.

    11. Erm...I usually think of the character then i think about what name pops up in my head when i first think of them....
Mostly Jrockers' names x.x If not i'll do abit of research and find interesting sounding names

    12. All of my dolls' names have been decided before I bought them except for Verdandi--who I named soon after buying her.

I put a lot of thought into the character before I decide on the doll now, but if I happened to come into possession of a new doll before I had (or just had to have a certain doll despite not having a character for them), I would still probably name them fairly quickly.

I just don't like leaving them nameless haha.

    13. I don't know what to call my Souldoll Hye. I've run through so many names from Welsh (Enfys) to Japanese (Ginchiyo) to Spanish (Ana) to English (Nicola) and so many personalities and sexualities...

I'm starting to get a bit worried that I'll open her box Tuesday and have no inspiration whatsoever :(

In comparison, my first three dolls were named pretty straightforwardly. At the latest within an hour of their arrival.

    14. I think naming is soooo important. It represents them. It's also a really nice bonding feeling. My first two dolls I named before I'd even saved up for them. My second two I named when They were ordered. I speand a fcouple of months picking the right one.

    15. When I first saw Lenore on the web site I already knew her name. When she arrived she seemed to tell me that I was right and that it was a perfect name for her.
My mom insisted upon naming Devon when we got him so i didn't even try to think of a name for him. She ended up picking a just the right name to.
A new boy is coming in the mail though and unlike Lenore I have no idea about a name for him. I wonder when he will tell me.

    16. Mine have all had names (usually before ive even ordered them). Ninde's name actually got lifted from a book as it sounded cool and suited him. I chose many of my dolls names for a specific meaning. I tend to use baby naming sites that you can enter the meaning you want a name to have, then scan down the list until one really jumps out at me....thats the name i usually choose for the doll in question. I then do the same thing for their last name. There have been two exceptions to this though....my tinies. For some reason their names just sort of jumped into my head just before i went to bed on night (last names and all) no idea why they are called what they are called they just wanted to be called that.

Many of the names i have seem to be either Persian or Sanskrit, i also have one that is native american, one that is indian (i think) and one germanic name.

    17. I've had my girl for over a month but still haven't named her yet, since I want to do it once she has her "permanent" faceup(which I had been too afraid to start on for quite a while :sweat ). I figure I'll really see the hatching of her personality once she has a face and expression, although a general idea of that and some possible names have been floating around in my head before I even decided on a sculpt. All I know for sure is that her surname is going to be something Scottish...

    18. Naming is so important for me ^^
Before ordering my first bjd, I thought of a name for her and it took me may be a week or two to find the perfect name.
It would be very long to explain why I ame it like that, though xD

    19. I think naming is very important as well. My first dolls name came to me right away due to her sculpt and my Irish background. (Teagan is an Irish name meaning beautiful)
However, after I ordered I noticed they were having a free head event. I picked a head from another doll I was considering. I *THINK* it's going to be a he, and maybe Teagan's brother or friend, but I have no idea, and I wont until I have the faceup done.

    20. The longest I’ve taken to decide on a name was about a week (poor doll was nameless for the whole duration), but for the right name, it's taken as long 3 months. >.> My Volks Tony went through 4 name changes before I found the perfect name for him, but then, there are some of my dolls that name myself as soon as they arrive.

I do think naming is important for a doll; it gives them an identity and place.
