How Long Before You Named Them / The Importance of Naming

Jun 15, 2008

    1. I've chosen the name for my doll, Jake, and I'm not getting him till January! I think it's important (and fun) to give your doll their name. I really enjoyed searching through baby books for Jake's.

    2. It always takes me ages to come up with names for things, but i surprised myself because it only took me a week to name my doll. :D Final result is Llewellyn Yardley Featherstone. Which is a little ridiculous, (ok a LOT ridiculous lol) but i think it suits him perfectly.

    3. My sister actually named my doll before he even got here, she said Xander would be a lovely name and I really liked it and happily he likes it too ^_^

    4. I named all my dolls as their concepts came into my head, but as their designs are slowly changing, their names are too. So watch this space...

    5. Both my dolls had names before I got them. The significance is there personality. For instance Eilin Betrys means the butterfly who brings joy. Corny yes. But she is a happy little fairy so it works. And I have had that character since I was a child. Haha. And Lilith Creeley means the poet from the night. Also her character. Course by day she is Lila which is sorta short for Delilah which makes her a deceiver. Which also works cause by day she is a sweet little girl and by night shes this romantic beautiful panther like thing. Haha. Well thats there names. Im also getting Eilin's big sister soon. Her name will be Harmony. Not just because shes a hippie. =P

    6. I've only managed to name two dolls before they arrived! The others seem to change their names on arrival. My SDC Kurt was always going to be Prince Klemens-Ruprecht and my SDC Kurenai is going to be a birthday present to myself and my birthday is two days before Christmas, so her name will be Marie-Noelle :)

    7. I've been lucky in the sense that my dolls had names before I came to own them as they were owned by someone else before me. I tend to keep the names they've been given, particulary if it suits them. Though I may vary it or give them nicknames to make it more personal to me or if it suits the doll's personality better. My Hanyuu is adorable so I kept her default/given name and nicknamed her Hani-Chan when I got her because I thought it sounded cute.

There are a majority of dolls that I've seen (and want, lol) and pretty much all of them I've given names too already...just to be prepared LOL But its more in the sense that I can see them as a particular character or person that I know of. So when I look around I tend to think like that, eg. "Oh, he looks like a William!" or "She looks like a character I wrote about. If i get her I'd name her [_____]!"

    8. Mine was named before I got him too.
He was the main character of a short story I wrote and have been mildly obsessed with since my even younger teens. xD

    9. I am having the trouble of naming my dolls now. Perhaps the best way for me personally to choose the final name is to actually meet them, see them, see how I respond to them. Naming is important to me- extremely important really- and I would not want to mess that up, basically. Reading about the different processes that people have gone through in order to name their dolls properly is pretty interesting figuring I cannot manage to name my own right now. My thoughts are leaning towards Liette and Lita, and yet I am not sure which is the male name and which is the female name. (Backstory: I am getting 'twins' that are not really twins.)

    10. This may sound horrible, But I didn't name Rosalynn for 8 months! It took me that long to divine a name for her! I think we are both satified with the final name result though! it was difficult for me for sure!

    11. i usually name my dolls before getting them, as well giving them a background and all, unless, like in Seven's case, i realize the character was completly wrong in the moment i get them.

    12. Most of my wishlist names were based on my original characters, so no worries there. The hardest one to decide was my Aru. There were a few names that I liked, but which one I would pick was giving me a hard time. It was actually while riding the bus listening to my mp3 player that helped me finally decide. One song in particular would oddly enough come up while I was thinking about her character, Apocalyptica's "Grace".

    13. I named mine like a week after i ordered him. :sweat
I have the tendency of changing his name since i always wonder whether it suggest something about his personality. *_*
I guess the naming process is one that bonds the doll to you and how you see him/her.
Yeah, and i finally stick to Miki. =)

    14. I haven't bought a doll yet but i have their names and characters laid out already.

imo, it's important to have a name and character planned out. it definitely defines a character for your doll and makes you more attached to them.

name databases are good ways to start. or if you're interested in not-so everyday names, look around names from different countries. At least that's what i did.

    15. I wanted to have a name ready for when my doll arrived so I spent several days writing down lists of names. (It just felt right for her to arrive with something I could call her besides "doll") I went by what letter of the alphabet I liked best for her character, names that made me smile, letter combination that sounded right in my head, and asking people for name ideas.

In the end, I went with Aerie because it just fit so well. I have a favorite doodle that ends up on a lot of my notes that I started calling the "f" doodle. So I'm thinking of giver her that doodles as a tattoo and when it's placed in front of her name it spells Faerie. Which of course is similar to how her character is. Perfect. :aheartbea

Also in this process I came up with lists of other perfect names that are already set up for my next... 7ish dolls. XD So unless I make an impulse purchase, I'm set with names for awhile.

    16. Most of mine get named pretty quickly... either before they arrive, or shortly after... but once in awhile you just run into a difficult one. A doll who absolutely refuses to suit anything you try pinning on him.

I've recently run into one of those.

I've had my Eden for a couple of weeks now, and he *still* doesn't have a name. I've had to resort to calling the silly, stubborn little brute "That one". :|

    17. Its gonna be a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time before I get my boy and I've already thought of a name for him XD

    18. Casimir, my Delf Harang, went a while before I found a name that stuck. For the first year that I only had him as a head he went by a different name but once he got his body the name didn't feel right so I had to find a new name. So for a few months I kept trying to call him different things and nothing worked and then finally Casimir came to me.

    19. Because my dolls are portraying characters I have imagined while looking for the correct sculpt online, I already have my dolls named before I even buy them.

    20. I've already kind of decided on a name for the doll I plan to get, but I want an opinion from some doll owners. He is a Souldoll Tae model, but I like the name Tae a lot, so I was thinking of naming him Tae-Jun. Is it "weird" or "unoriginal" perhaps for me to use part of his mold name? It just seems to fit him really well... *_*
