How Long Before You Named Them / The Importance of Naming

Jun 15, 2008

    1. When I got my first doll, I ended up not naming him for something like two months, maybe almost three. I didn't name him until I broke my ankle and he became my primary source of almost-human contact and amusement. And even then, it wasn't for at least a month after I broke my ankle. Then I was watching a movie in class with him on the desk that a name from the movie just jumped out at me. My second doll went for a couple weeks without a name, but hers went a lot faster. I just partially named her after one of my friends in Japan. Then my third and latest doll was bought specifically to make a pre-made character, so she was named years before she got here. Years before I even knew what BJDs were.

    2. I've never really been one to base a bjd off of a character, so I've never known "who" they would be until they arrived.

My first, I knew almost immediately what to call her when I opened the box. The name "Lydia" just sprung out at me, almost as if she announced it herself.

For my twin girls, however, it took me about a month or so. I ended up going to Paris for vacation, and when I came back, I knew I wanted something French-inspired, so their names came shortly after. :)

    3. I've always had a character ready for the doll I was waiting for, in fact that's what decides me if i buy a doll or not, I try to see if my character could live in the doll.

The only one I named after receiving him was my Achernar, Leeto. I didn't have a character for him and created him after the doll ^^ It took approximatively 24 hours XD

    4. I only named my Bei a few days after I got her. ^^; Before I could really think of anything, I had to start creating a personality of sorts for her, and then I still spent a while considering possible names before I decided on Eva.

    5. I treated Lux more than a baby or orphan pal than a doll, I decided her name a long time before she arrived, I think she deserved it. I gave her a name I loved most to the doll I loved most, HER >3

    6. Raphael had his name upon the time I saw the Nanuri 07 sales pic at Luts. So he had his name for over a year before he came home this December. He evolve into a story character after that and that is how he got his personality and history.

When Aren comes home, he will have had his name for years, as he was created in Raphael's story. As for Maximilian, he too will have had his name for years by the time I get him. He doesn't even have a mold yet.

    7. I had names for both my boys before they even arrived, once I got my first guy though, I realized the name was completely off and spent a couple weeks searching and picking through names to find just the right one. I had already bonded with him, and taken bunches of photos before I got the name. Having the name was just like the icing on the cake that made him just that much more lovable.

    8. My first I never really connected with, & that sort of showed because I had a terrible time coming up with a name. My second, I actually had to run a contest to find her 'real' name, since she wouldn't tell me on her own. Fortuitous, because I ended up meeting someone who has since become a good online buddy. My 3rd named herself, as did my two Minimee heads whose personas & names were well-developed long before they arrived.

    9. I don't have any of my five planned dolls yet (though my first is shipping on Saturday! squee!) but they all have names. The first four got their names from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass- my Musedoll Ciel is Alice, and the three puki's I have planned are her 'kittens' Dinah, Snowdrop and Kitty. Alice's little sister sprung up when I saw Musedoll's new Phai sculpt, and so her name will be Evie (the real Alice had a little sister named Edith).

    10. I had a name picked out for my doll, before I got her, but when she arrived, for some reason I didn't think it fit her. (So her and I sat down and came up with a name.)

I think naming your dolls gives them more of a personality, beyond what they look/dress like. (Then again most think I am odd...lol) I never really thought about nameing a doll after a show I watch or someone I know. Amphetamine, I love some of the names you choose. ^_^

    11. Thanks, Mishikotoko! I have a slight worry that they'll want to change their names when they get here (as it seems to be a common problem) but I'm hoping they'll like them too. :)

    12. Sometimes I have a name picked out for them, and sometimes when they arrive a name jumps at me when I see them. :) I find it's really fun to name them.

    13. Such a big problem for me!! orz
I cant decided my first doll's name until now, its been 4 years so far...|||

    14. I also had my doll's name picked out before I even bought him. I had three or four names I really liked and what helped me pick the name was the time I ordered him, on the day it was snowing really really hard so I thought I would like to name him after something related to the snow and I did- his name is Yuki
^^ My next doll is going to be named Adrian^^ I love that name.

I do think it's important to name your dolls to help bond with them but even if it takes you longer to come up with the right name - that's okay. You and the doll should be happy with the name even if it takes awhile.

    15. I was convinced I named my doll before she ever came. I named her "Dalli" (think how little kids say Dolly" but once she arrived, I had second thoughts, and the name Calli Ann came to me, and it's her. I can't describe it, but that face and that name were meant to be together.

    16. I have a name for them within a week of deciding to get the doll. I dunno but it seems weird to not have a name for them when they get here.

Although, I've wanted a Soom R. Gena since she first came out and basically I've only just named her in the past month, although I did have names for her before, they just didn't suit my taste when it came to actually laying out the money for her!

    17. amphetamine I wouldn't worry. (Heck I didn't think it was a common problem..haha)

Well I hope they like the names you picked out as well. They're really nice names.

    18. Since the dolls I intend to buy will be representing some of my characters from original fiction, they already have their names planned out (though were they come from in the first place is now long since lost to the mists of time).

However, I knew I wanted a Minifee Shushu before I had any reason to justify wanting to buy her. I was thinking about all my doll plans and characters and stories one day, when a character came along and said 'ooh, I like that!'. Which was very helpful and gratifying, because she ended up resolving the open ending to one of my stories!

So I think I'll probably almost always have names for my dolls before I buy them, because otherwise I'll feel that while they're gorgeous, I don't really need them. But then again, I wouldn't be surprised if it happened the other way around - I fall in love with a mould, buy it, and then name it when it arrives.

Names are important, and because of that, I don't think they need to be rushed. The perfect one will always present itself eventually. ^^

    19. I've always sort of created characters based off of the doll I wanted but names have always been kind of iffy. I have three dolls and I had names for all of them picked out before they arrived but when they got here their names changed:lol:
I had named my girl Nina but a few weeks after she got here I changed her name to January. Sometimes it takes a little while but it's just because I'm waiting for a name that really fits them and who they really are.

    20. Usually my dolls have names before I even decide to buy them. The only exception was Overseer, mostly because I thought he was Damian, but when I opened the box he was like "Guess who's here and who's not."
