How Long Before You Named Them / The Importance of Naming

Jun 15, 2008

    1. When I was in the market for my first doll I had no idea what to name it. I've always loved the name Rae and If i ever have a baby girl thats what I decided I'd name her. When I saw DOT E-an I knew it was her name. If I was a doll I would be an E-an (obviously not as perfect & Beautiful) but I kinda look like her. I thought of her sort of as my baby, so I named her Rae

    2. I have characters, and I love almost all dolls, is just that I buy ONLY the ones for my characters. If I find a MUST HAVE, I make a character for it, and until I'm settled to know very well how he/she looks, personality, backstory and stuff I don't buy the doll.

    3. i started thinking for my boy's name when i started to get interested to uy him  i thought of james, but my father's name is jaïme (we pronounce it jame...) so i thought it was to close. then i thought of elliot and then honoré... but i kept changing the caracter ^^; so i had to change the name everytime. when i received him, it took me a few days to name him. it was just ''my woosoo''. to find him a name, i went online... Aiden is his name now :D
i gave hima name just cuz it bothered me that he didnt have one... but what really mada me get attached to him, was when i dyed him and painted him. i felt he was complete then ^^

    4. For the most part, I'm the same way. With dolls that already have names, I'd most likely keep those names. Except for cases like if I got a Volks SD Kun and a Volks Yo-SD Kun, calling them both Kun would be kind of confusing... *_* And in cases like FCS dolls, which I plan for my first to be a Volks FCS F-18, clearly that isn't much of a name, unless you're a robot. ;)

But I plan to get a Yo-SD Lin and call her Lin, a Mika and call her Mika, etc.

    5. i have not received my first doll yet (i have two on the way though)

but i already feel like having a name ready is very important. i understand alot of people like to name their dolls after they see them, and i think thats a great way to pick a name that really fits. but my advice would be to pick a possible name before the doll arrives. especially if you have a long way to wait for your doll

i only suggest that because i think if you spend so much time talking about or picturing your doll as "my doll" or "dolly" or the company name for example heliot when they get home your going to have a hard time changing from dolly or heliot to Alex (or whatever you chose to name your doll) which is absolutely fine if you want to keep the company name =]

    6. Sometimes their name comes to me upon first glance others the name eludes me so they keep their sculpt name since I can't come up with anything better and I do keep a list of my favorite names but they sometimes reject my choices.

    7. Same here! My first doll (a Puki Sugar) is on the way, and while a few names seem to 'pop out' at me, I think naming before you see the doll might be difficult. Naming something helps you bond with it (we name animals, don't we?), and dollies are much the same...

    8. I only have one doll home. and it took some time before I choose a name for her. And I have another doll incoming and she does not have a name yet. A name is a very important thing it has a meaning and holds who you are.
I always want a special name for my dolls that you don’t find a second time in the world of bjd.
With my first doll I wanted to be a name that you could sing and sounded beautiful because that would fit her being an angel. So I took a time to find that. Eventually it just popped up in my head.
And the reason why I haven’t chosen a name for my other doll is because I want it to be from an acient mythology (probably something Celtic or German/pagan.) it has to mean or involved with threes because she is going to be a forest creature. So I’m doing a lot of research now.

    9. For me choosing a perfect name is extremely important. This is why my DM Thinking Larme has sat without a name for almost a year now... It makes me really sad, but I can't just give him any name.

I hope I could name him soon.

    10. I'm terrible coming up with names for pets, so I have a feeling that I'm gonna have some trouble naming my doll when I finally get it. For a whole month and a half I just called my bird...Bird. Or Birdie. Terribly unoriginal, but now the name has grown on me and I can't stop calling it that...
I do hope that I don't call my new doll "Doll".
For me, names are really important so I'll try and figure out a name before she arrives. I'm sure a name will pop up into my head once I see her. :)

    11. I like naming my dolls it makes them more mine , some i have a name for before they arrive some take me awhile *_*

    12. I may be weird, but I ususally know a doll's name before she arrives. Usually before I finish paying for them. That is one of the ways I know the doll is supposed to come home to me.
      Valerie:D

      My favorite name website:
      http://www.behindthename.com/

    13. i named ami before i got her
because i found a name origin site
      that said ami ment "friend"
      (thought that was cute ^_^)
but i named Moriko like a month after i had her
      (originally it was Kokiri)
      (still haves doubts)
      (>_>)
      lol

    14. I selected a name long before I even decided on what doll I wanted. The only problem with doing this is you have an idea now based on the name on how your doll's personality will be before you even meet them. If I picked the first mold I had my eyes on, I think I would have had to change the name and personality completely. His face was too kind and innocent for the character I had in mind attached to the name. I think it's a better idea to keep a couple names/character ideas on stand-by just incase.

    15. I was thinking and writing down names for my Puki Piki before she was even paid for! I mean, I was paying for her but I still had another payment due. I was thinking of different names. I settled for Amber Rosalyn. Amber means precious stone and Rosalyn means little rose. I thought those described my little girl perfectly! Her last name is Thatcher! There is her mommy, Evangeline Dawn Thatcher, and her daddy, Chris Raven Thatcher. Each of their names were picked out before they were even in my possession. I do find names important for dolls...because I think you would have trouble bonding with them otherwise. Try doing what I do and write a list of names, put a picture with your doll and post it here and ask what others think. Have a vote or something. In the end your doll will have a wonderful name! So long as you pick out names you like for them to vote on.

    16. Well, that's easy...my boyfriend actually named her originally. She's a Yukino type Dollfie Dream. He free-associated Yumiko from Yukino. However, I did extend her name somewhat. I got the Kanji (on the icon) from the Behind The Name site...love the meanings behind it:

And also I gave her her full name: NATSUME Yumiko Arisu.

      Natsume after one of my favorite Anime characters of all time, Nuku Nuku, her "father," cybernetics designer Natsume Kyusaku, and her "brother" Natsume Ryunosuke;

and Arisu after her appearance when I brought her home: she was wearing this cute Alice In Wonderland kind of pinafore dress, and also because I'm a huge fan of ABe Yoshitoshi and Arisu was one of the main characters in Serial Experiments: Lain. The dress can be seen in the photo manga put together from photos I took of her on the train coming back from my boyfriend's place in Santa Barbara.

    17. My first doll I waited till he got here so I could look at him and make up a name that would suit him. The others, I tried to prepare for by researching names before their arrival. Some of them stuck, while others had a couple of names before I settled on ones that seemed right. Usually while talking with people, I tend to use their stock names so people know who I'm talking about. Only my friends know the names I've given them.

    18. I've had my first doll for 4 years and just named her last month. I think it's important to take your time to name a doll. It should be a name that suits the personality that you've chosen to give the doll. I couldn't stand the thought of 'renaming' my doll if I found a better name, so I just didn't name her.

    19. I named Aurora a few minutes after opening the box. xD
I had a long list of possible names, and three that I was really stuck on. However, those three didn't fit, and the least likely ended up being her name.

For me, I feel that the name has to fit. I personally don't care how long the wait is to finding the perfect name, so long as I find it. ^^

    20. It took me quite a while to settle on a name for some of my dolls. I don't think it matters when you do it, it's more important to find the right name, the one that suits them best.
