How Long Before You Named Them / The Importance of Naming

Jun 15, 2008

    1. Over a year, and going! I have a (Dal) doll that I am determined to bond with. For some reason I have a hard time naming any doll of mine until I establish a personality and look. Thankfully, I know what I want my Dal to look like now and she just needs the right wig. :)

As for my newest doll, a Brownie Pag, I haven't named her yet because I want to give her a name that'll match up with what she'll look like in her soon-to-be new wig.
I think that lack of a name does hinder my relationship with my dolls, but it's great once we're past that. :P

      It's always baffling to me when people name their dolls before even getting them in the mail. Maybe I just have a doll-naming problem. xD;

    2. Bijoux told me her name before she even arrived. I hadn't planned on naming her so early, but she told me that was her name, so what was I to do? I did already have ideas for her personality, but I must say, she ended up being quite different than I expected. I thought she was going to be so gentle, sweet, and quiet. Nope. She is demanding, loud, and a foofy little diva! She is really quite a handful... she's still my little precious bauble though, and really Bijoux is still the perfect name for her.

She is my first BJD so I haven't much experience in the name game. I do have more on their way, and the next two already have their names as well... and personalities somewhat formed to go along with.

    3. It's been the same way for me. Both of my dolls gave me their names before they arrived. :)

    4. I think it's important to give a name tho the doll, because when it hasn't got a name, it has also a lack of personality. I mean, for a character to be finished, it must be a name. Without it, the character is undefined ^^

    5. I'm horrid with names. Thank goodness I don't have children, seriously. I'd revert to the old world notion of not naming them until they were a few years old, just in case they didn't survive childhood. :|

Some dolls I get to be old RPG characters and the like, and they more or less 'come with' a name attached. Others, I wait until they 'earn' a name, or one seems to present itself.

I guess I'm a bit odd. I don't mind a doll that looks like an interesting 'blank canvas' personality-wise coming in to my home. It will develop one as I fuss with him or her. It seems like a more organic process to me.

    6. my first doll got her name the same day, my second allready had a name when she came, so did my third, the names are important to me, they will stick with them, everything else will probably change

    7. Haruki got his name when I got him out of his packaging instantly. xD Name is very important because even if they aren't living, we take care of them like they are alive an of course we name them to give them their personality.

    8. It took me some time before I really set on a name for my first doll. I'd had a few names in mind: Artemis, Diana, Luna...something to do with the Moon. When she arrived, none of them really fit too well. I know that I wanted her name to be either German, since that was supposed to be her ethnicity so I looked for names on behindthename.com (which is a good site for finding ethnic names). I really liked the name "Adelheid," but it took a few weeks before it really stuck.

      Bonding was easier after that.^^

Naming my second doll was a lot easier. I'd just finished reading Jane Eyre and loved it enough to name a doll after it. My doll Jane isn't really supposed to be a character doll, but her looks and name are certainly based off of a young Jane Eyre. I knew when I bought the doll that would be her name (unless I had another issue as with the first which luckily didn't happen).

    9. My doll was named when he arrived home...... At the time when I first saw him. I believe a name represents the soul of my doll, it's just like, it's not a named was given, it's like, he should be called like this, to be the one who called like this......

    10. I named my doll before I even ordered him XD When I have a character in mind I role play with them a bit to see if I even like that character and then name them something that fits their personality or a trait that they might have. So I decide on names way befor they get home.

    11. For my first girl I didn't name her until she arrived.. As I had no idea what I was gonna name her. But I was really obsessing over a name, and decided I would name her that! Citlali! It's a really pretty name. And from her name, I came up with a whole story.. Lol. So now the next 5 dolls on my list have names and personalities. Lol.
But for any dolls I get after that, I'm not sure if I'll name them before or after I get them. It'll probably depend on what I want for them. XD

As for the importance of naming. I think it's probably different for everyone. Some people might just name their doll to name them. Others get dolls to represent their OCs, so therefore already have name. And I sure some people don't even name their dolls. Lol. I think for me, naming is quite important.. As I'ma be wanting to write stories for all mah dolls. So.. They're gonna need names. Lol. And if I write a story for them all, then they'll all turn into mah OC.. OCs need names. ;D

    12. I haven't gotten a doll yet but I have already figured out every single detail of him xD. Now all I need is to find a doll who looks like what I imagined.

    13. I think giving name to your doll is quite improtant, so I always name my dolls before they arrive.
Give your doll a name means there is a personal relationship been build up between you and your doll.
Just like parents always give their children names before give birth, maybe I look my dolls in a similar way as parents looking at their children.

    14. My doll told me her name before I ordered her (Mei-Lynn), so how could I resist? :) She looks like a peaceful, slightly mischevious, laid back personality so for now she's bohemian... we'll see how that goes when she arrives!

    15. Heehee. I have no dolls yet, but three of them already have names and personalities.:sweat

    16. I had decided on a name for my doll- Luna, but then my boyfriend said something along the lines of "Oh yeah, like Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter" and that really hadn't been what I was thinking of at all.

Personally, I think my doll looks a bit like 'Meadow' but I'm not sure how much I like it, really. I suppose time will tell!

    17. I do it long before I get them, either a week or so after placing their order or a week or so before! 8D

    18. I jumped right into naming my doll. Being as this is my first one and all. I didn't like her given name, basically because I didn't know how to pronounce it.

    19. For myself, every doll I intend to have in my collection is always purchased as a shell, so they'll have a name long before they ever come to live with me, long before there's a mould for them.

I have purchased dolls in the past (not BJDs, but it's the same sort of process for naming, I think) that took some time to name. One of them eventually became my mini-me, but I gave her my middle name and my paternal grandmother's maiden name so that there was not a direct connection between us. That took me just shy of two weeks to decide. Another doll I had for nearly two months before I named him, but because it took so long to name him, I had trouble bonding, so he moved on...

I think that however long it takes for you to come up with a name that sounds right, feels right, and that you like is precisely how long it should take to name your baby ;)

    20. I've been trying to name dolls on my wishlist that I've started developing personalities for. Only one doll is based on an original character while the other names just come to me ^^" I'm planning on buying two dolls as my firsts (That sounds odd XD") and their characters haven't really come to me yet. I have a good idea about them, but nothing really developed. So I gave them filler names for right now <.<" (They fit pretty well, so I don't complain.)

But for the importance of naming, I think it's just to establish identity and really claim the doll as yours. Excuse the example & reference but it's a bit like Pokemon - Yeah, we know everyone has a Pikachu. What sets yours apart from the rest? (And it using Surf doesn't count D: )
