How Long Before You Named Them / The Importance of Naming

Jun 15, 2008

    1. Well, I tried to name my first girl, but once I realized I was having to refer to her twice when talking about her I decided to just stick with the name she was given when I bought her. Especially now that I have lots of girls.
I don't like having to say "Jane, my Iplehouse Sylvia" it is just easier to call her Sylvia.

    2. When I bought my first BJD, a pukipuki Lily, I was so in love with her that, will waiting for her, I couldn't stop calling her Lily... And when she arrives, she really looks like a Lily... So she kept this name.

For my second doll, Nessie, I was in love for this caracter, so I decided to named my doll like this. And I really tried to make her look like Nessie. But in fact, she's not a Nessie... She's a Stolka ^^' So I juste renamed her... yesterday ^^' And now she has a real story...

And for my last doll, I was tchating with my mum about child's illness when she told me about Scarlatine... And I thought this word would be a geat doll name ^^' So my Planetdoll is Scarlatine ;)

    3. Just saw this old thread but I thought I'd post. I used to try to name my dolls and then found that sometimes I forgot them. Now I don't try unless for names but if a doll looks like a certain name then I give the doll a name. For example, I got a Unidoll Uhr-21 and she looked Clara so that's her name. I just couldn't see calling that company name! LOL

Honestly though sometimes I just like the name the sculptor gave to the mold and it sticks with the doll. My first BJD was a pocket fairy named Mini May and it suits her just perfectly. My first big SD girl was a Ryung and her name is Mareska and her twin is named Cayenne. Very different faceups and characters so different names.

    4. I like to wait until I see her in the flesh. Uhhh, OK, in the resin.... I don't do the whole character/story/biography thing but I do like the doll's name to FIT.

    5. For my first girl, she was being made into my OC so she had a name before she was picked out really! I think it suits her just fine. For my KDF that I'm saving for I ended up trying to brainstorm ideas and so far the name Alexei is sticking, but whether it will when he gets here or not... I used to collect pullips before this and I went well over a month without naming sometimes. For me I think a name is important for me to 'bond' with them and flesh out a character. If I cant' do that then I can't enjoy them as much.

    6. I wasn't able to name my Ashe until after I saw her in person. Even after that, I tried to think of a name that maybe wasn't used so much, but Ashe just stuck!

    7. I had not even thought of a name until after my boy came to me.
I was in the process of creating my OC for him, and I hadn't picked his name yet.
I finally found the right name, and I think it couldn't be more perfect for him.

    8. I usually name them before I get them. Amir was my first, his full name is Zero Amir Angel. I picked out the name before I ordered him, but didn't know if I'd call him "Zero" or "Amir" until after I ordered him.

Loki was originally going to be Blaize, but practically screamed in my face that his name is NOT Blaize, and I better call him Loki. lol Likewise, his sister Maddox was supposed to be Pandora....but it just didn't fit her right.

Jasper was really an unplanned doll, just found him at a price I couldn't pass up. I had his head for several days before he had a name.

So...to answer the question, the doll usually lets me know his/her name. eventually. lol

    9. I normally wait till I've received them, but from what it seems lately is that I get my first one and build from that. I have a character in mind for the one I'm waiting to receive but still yet to find a name that fits, soo...I guess it's a variant until I get him here.

    10. So, I don't even have my first doll yet; but I've been wanting her for so long that she already has a name. I'm getting a DOT E-an and I want to name her Alexiel. If when I open up the box the name doesn't fit anymore, I have a few in store ( like Eden and Lilix. I love having 'x' in names lol). I just love thinking about names so much, I think I have enough names in stock already for my first 3 dolls xD

    11. I named my 1st doll before I even got my doll!!;):)

    12. Same as Clangdon! Named before I got them, although both went through a few changes before I settled on one.

    13. I always name my dolls before I get them, since I know what they're supposed to look like, and buy molds that I think fit the character I've imagined. Sometimes, the doll changes names once I've had him/her for a while, and realize they're a different character than I had thought, but for me, buying a doll without already naming them would feel make it hard for me to bond with that doll.

    14. i decided my boy's name before he got here. i wrote up a list and narrowed it down. same thing for my girl. if i cant stop thinking about a certain name, then i know its a hint that its something i should consider more closely.

also, i like to look for names i like with meanings i like. :3

    15. I think naming a doll is very important, and I think it helps bond.
I find I'm more attached to my childhood toys that had distinctive names than the ones that I never gave a name to.
Even if you keep the given company name, I think it's better than being "one of my dolls".
I think naming somehow... makes it feel as if its more yours.

I have all my dolls-to-be's names picked out, and I had the names for the ones I already have before I even ordered them. They're based on characters that were created before I discovered BJDs, though.

    16. I named my first BJD-Asleep Eidolon Mini: Jiao long before the layaway was finished (^o^)'''...
She's Pyoo Nabi. Nabi is butterfly in Korean. Pyoo is...I don't know...I just love Pyoo. I always sound Myoo whenever i see something adorable...but Myoo was taken by my cangaroo plushy...so...i changed the AE-Jiao's name into Pyoo...
I plan to make it as a family name...hahahaha (am i a freak or what? (-.-)'''' ). So the next AE dolls or hybrid (AE heads with other body), will be Pyoo-"something" (^o^)'''''

    17. I find naming my dolls to be crucial to my bonding of them. I tend to pour over names while staring at my doll for a good hour or two. If I can't think of something I tend to take breaks and wait for inspiration to hit me. If I absolutely can not name a doll- I feel that I am not bonding with it properly much like the OP has stated.

The longest it took me to come up with a name has been several days never exceeding five. Usually a name will hit me after a while and I like it. However, I have renamed one of my dolls from Eleanor to Yaezaki simply because she wears that name better than I could ever dream of. Ever since the renaming I've bonded with her much better than before.

Just consider me the bootleg version.

I think if I couldn't name my doll I would turn it over to my Roommate if she names it it's hers. She also does the same for me mind you~

    18. i choose the name, image and personality wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy before i actually go and get the doll. its easier to get their clothing and stuff to fit them.

    19. Yeah, that's what I do (not just for dolls, but anything that needs a name) just think of sounds. X3 Or like, what letter it should start with. I'm always like "NO NAMES THAT START WITH B."
      lol. D:

    20. I usually come up with a name after the doll arrives, but with my Lisa i couldn't decide on a name and nothing stuck so while i was trying to decide a name for her i would just call her Lisa and well the more i called her Lisa the more it stuck. So in the end i couldn't imagine calling her anything else lol.
