How Long Before You Named Them / The Importance of Naming

Jun 15, 2008

    1. I decided on a name for my doll before I received her. I had a few Korean names on my "considered" list, but Min was the name that suited her best.
I think people should name their dolls at one point, in order to bond better with them. :)

    2. I try to think up a name immediately right after purchasing, I try my best to give them names that reflects their character.

And it does help with the whole 'bonding' process too, I would rather call them to a specific name than by 'descriptive adjectives' (eg. 'the red head' 'the darker skin one' 'that one with the long nose'), I would imagine it be confusing for you yourself, especially if your resin crew is growing in numbers.

    3. I'm the same way. Usually just after I hit the pay button I am thinking up a name. Some come quickly like Beatrice for my Volks Mimi. Other like my Notdoll Miriam take a little time to figure out.

    4. I already have a name for my doll that hasn't even shipped yet. This is because it helps me decide on the type of eyes, wig, and clothing that I need and plan on getting before the doll comes.
I never give descriptive names, just names I like and find classy. I feel that allows the doll to develop as an individual. (My, that sounds weird...) I usually stick to good, old English names.
I suppose if I just ordered a doll from a distributor it might be different, but if I have a month or more to think about it.. I'll already have a name and probably more figured out by the time the doll arrives.

    5. My Galena is here for almost four months and she still doesn't have a name. :P I just call her Galena for the time being. I have difficulty to bond with her because she is a impulsive buy (like all the Soom monthly dolls must be). Slowly she is getting her look and character.

I like to have my dolls named before they arrive. And I also think it helps with bonding and creating a character.

    6. Oddly enough, I'm terrible with names but I've already given them to the two dolls I wish to save for. They just...jumped at me. Talk about counting chickens before they hatch!

    7. I am horrible with names. I still have to name two Minifees, two Puki, and a Littlefee of mine (I have had most of these a year and a half at least) . On that note I just had to open my profile to even remember my other Puki's name!

    8. I think the longest I've gone without giving one a name is about a year? Still don't have one actually. Sadly, that tends to happen a lot with my impulse buys that aren't planned out with a character already in mind.

I think it does really help for them to have names. Without a name I have a hard time getting a feel for the character and this often leads to them not having the proper look, which in turn hinders bonding at times. Though in the case of my Unoa "o" boy (who holds the record for longest un-named doll) I'm really attached but just don't know what to call him.

    9. I have a problem wanting to name all my girl dolls the same name :P

I just love the name so much.

    10. Ed has been an original character of mine for about 5-ish years now, and I wanted a BJD based on him. So he naturally inherited the name!

But if I had to choose a name for an unnamed BJD, I prefer to take name meanings to heart, this site helps me alot:

    11. My DZ Megi got his name befor he arrived. The name Shizu stucks in my head for a while, so he's named so ^^My next doll, who will be a girl, will be named Yuki, this name stucks also in my head and I can't forget it *lol*

    12. It depends of the dolls, sometimes i can find one easily when i see her and soetimes, it takes more time to defind her and know her ell to give her a name.

    13. Hmm.. I knew from the beginning that my Brownie's name was Cherry, but I kept naming her Momo, since she was a momo sculpt.. now her name is "Cherry Momo " xDD

    14. I'm still thinking on names for my girl and she hasn't arrived yet but I know exactly what I want her to look like.

    15. I've had a Liz now for a while who I named the day she arrived but then never called her y that name. I have recenlty (months later) renamed her and I think the new name works much better!

    16. If I don't have a name for them to begin with - like they're not modeled after one of my characters or I just cant find a name that works - I find I don't bond with the doll. Sometimes I pick a name and just roll with it for ease and in hopes they'll evolve into a character but so far this hasn't worked. It's been pretty dissapointing actually so this time around I've bought a mould to remake the character I bought my first doll to be! She's already named and a character I've had for years so I know what eyes, wig, and clothes will work for her. I'm excited because I know her personality and thinking of what to do with her photography wise is also alot easier for me. If this goes well I'll probably suck it up and only buy dolls based on my long-time characters since I'll be more attached. But this means the mould has to really channel them so I'll have to wait a long time and search alot, I made the mistake of trying to 'force' a mould to be a character even though I knew it didnt' really suit her.

So for me, names hold alot of strength because it really does seem to show how much actual attachment I have.

    17. I'm waiting for my first doll and can't help trying out names in my head. Shiloh has stuck so far, I think a lot because I'm not sure whether the doll's a boy or a girl and Shiloh is gender neutral to me. I'm not expecting it to stick, but who knows? I'll see when the doll finally gets here..! :)

    18. Names really do help the bonding process, I think so at least, but at the same time you can't rush the process.
'Honey' came naturally, just over the course of time. I usually call things and people Honey anyways, so it just stuck. My boyfriend decided I should name the boy I want to get in her size 'Clover', so that sorta stuck XD

    19. Hmm, well. I'm the kind that finds a doll I like, and then gives it a story and name and appearence. A lot of times I end up just not getting the doll, but keeping the character produced from it. If I was able to have all the dolls I've created characters for, I'd have a huuuuge doll family.
For me, it doesn't take long to come up with a name, just a whoole lot of though.

My current head's name is Pandemonium, root word being "pan" which leaves a lot of room for nicknames, such as Panic, Pandemic, Panda, Pandora, etc...
I have a Luts Summer even KDF on the way now, and her name is Bitter... But I have a feeling it won't stick well and I may change it over time... Which is okay, because she was a spontaneous buy so she never had a very strong story to begin with, and I'd be comfortable with changing her character freely.

Like Tealykins mentioned, I sometimes use name databases that include meaning to find neat names. Btw, Tealykins; I love the doll in your profile pic :D

    20. I've really always decided on a name before hand. My first doll though, I had had one name for him initially, wanting to make hima certain character, that didn't pan out so he was named Phiyero within the week of arrival. The others I knew their names before they arrived. I had settled on Darcy Bellamie for my Heliot shortly after paying for him. Tezza is a longstanding character my Ha Yarn Cho was boguht to represent. And even the parts I've bought since then.... I have Afi parts, when they're complete they will be named Vidor.
