How Long Before You Named Them / The Importance of Naming

Jun 15, 2008

    1. i have character sheets from when i was younger, so when i buy a doll i name it after a character of mine :}

    2. As i writing fantasy novel for 5 past, so i named my doll as main female character. I think if i will buy more, i will use same source.

    3. It took me about 3 days to find a name that I felt suited my RS Rong~ and altho I'm still paying off the layaway for my boy I'm trying to think of names that might suit him as well~ altho, I really think I need to see each doll in person before I'm absolutely sure the name will fit. :)

    4. I name all my dolls (or at least have so far) something to do with the Beatles. (Lucy, Jo Jo and Mr. Kite. XD)

      I tried to name them as quickly as I could. I have a very hard time bonding with dolls untill they have their names. I'm not sure why but it feels like they don't really "come alive" until they have a name.

    5. LOL, I love this thread!!!
      For those who haven't named their dolls, consider this website:http://www.behindthename.com/
      I used it to help my create my girl character's first name, which is an amalgamation of two names (technically three since the name that inspired me is an amalgamation itself.)
      I suggest writing down all of the names you do like and then test them against your doll. If the name sounds "right" to you, then that name was meant to be!
      I got lucky with my boy because when I saw him, his name was Maseru.

    6. I'm actually still deciding on my doll's name. But she won't arrive until September, or at least I was told I'd be waiting for about that long, so I still have time. But I did settle on Tsuki for her for now until she arrives and then once I put her wig on and we're face to face, then I can figure out if Tsuki is a perfect name for her or not. I just chose that name because it was a name I always liked. Plus ironically it meant "moon" in japanese and multiple times when I had my fortune read with tarot cards, I was told "The Moon" was my card. ^^ So it's just ironic I guess that I remembered that name.

    7. Names for Raoul and Katze appeared before the boys came, because there were the names of anime characters.
      Liam got his name as soon as he came to me, when i saw, that this name really suits him.
      And little Ivarella had to wait for several weeks, before i understood, what name she wants )))

    8. Lili had to wait two weeks for her name.. that was long.
      Zack and Karrigan were pretty obvious, Zack as being Zack Fair, Karrigan being secondhand and I just couldn't change his name..
      And my incoming puki already has a name, like, months before she gets here.. She'll be called Noa

    9. Well I don't have any yet... but of the ones I will be ordering soon [damn lack of money thwarting me from doing it now] I already have names floating through my head... for them ^.^ who knows if they'll stick though..

    10. I had a really hard time picking a name for my doll since he wasn't based on a character or anything. I didn't decided until maybe 2 weeks after I got (all of) him. I got his head about a month before his body and tried to think of a name but when his body came it felt like I really really had to choose a name asap! We had been called him "Bullet" for the time being but eventually decided it wasn't right for him. xD

    11. I love to write fiction, so I have tons of characters, personalities, and names stored in my brain somewhere. While I was shopping for a doll, I looked at tons but didn't see any I really loved until... I found one I did! He matched up exactly with how I'd imagined one of my characters, so I took one look at him and though, "Hey! That's Otavi!"

      I'll finally meet him in person at the end of October. The longest time it's taken me to name a doll? Negative three months. ^^;

    12. I usually try not to make the name before I have the actual doll in my hands and see what name fits it... But now I already have 2 names decided for my future dolls lol. And I still haven't figured out what name to use for my one male who is only a head now... Maybe the name comes when I get the body and make the faceup etc.

    13. Ah names, I'm pretty terrible at naming characters, let alone dolls. XD Because they need to have a lot of meaning to me. A lot of my characters tend to get temporary names then then end up sticking, lol. Like I have a character called Fallen, because that was the theme of the first picture I drew of him. Another called Flicker because it reflected her 'state of being' which was kinda there but kinda not. Bunni was first an alias I wanted to use, but then she evolved into a character of her own and remained named Bunni.

      My first doll was named after my pet lamb who died an untimely death but that I loved very much. The name had been picked for him because it was the name I wanted to use if I ever had a baby boy. Kody, is my AAYi's name. The doll itself was preowned by a friend, so for the first couple of weeks after I said I'd buy him I always called him Finny, a nickname of his previous name, but I absolutely had to rename him because she was getting another doll to replace him that would take up Finny's character. But once I renamed him he really just became my own. Which is a wonderful feeling. :aheartbea

      A doll I'm planning to get just grabbed me immediately as the character I mentioned before, Bunni, but I'll use her alternate name, Bethney. So her name was decided the moment I saw her. :D

    14. ((i do apologize if this thread already exsists! I searched and searched using the toolbar and my own clicking around and could not find a thread that fit quite what I was looking for @_@ Please merge this with another if it does!!))

      Hey DoA, how did you choose your name for your doll(s)? Did you look through baby books? Just had a feeling the name was right? Or do you have a silly story to go with it? Please share! :-D

      Why do I ask? WELL, I'm currently having issues choosing a name for my pukifee Pong Pong (which I'm ordering for my graduation present to myself lol) and thought I'd ask you guys for help. ;)

    15. I chose my girl's name by looking at her nationalities, and hitting the baby books section of the library.

    16. Many of my dolls are named after charactors from movies and books. Not to mention naming them after old DnD charactors that I am too attached to.

    17. I do a myriad of things. My first doll, I wasn't so worried about her name. I figured that I would name her when she got here. I chose her name in school on the day she had arrived (but didn't know it yet). Subsequent dolls have all been a little different. Some of their names came easily to me (Julian, Max, Rose, April), while some took weeks or even months to decide (Aiden, Oliver, Azalea). If there's a particular meaning I want associated with the name, I use behind the name. I actually use that site with all my doll names, but particularly for meanings. A lot of them that I'm getting now already have names, so it's not an agonizing decision like it was with Oliver (he had a list of 12, then narrowed down from there. It took two months). Whatever it is, it should be something you love and fits the personality of the doll.

    18. Most of mine are named after other sci fi characters, but I do get ideas from other places.
      For instance when I was waiting for Sunshine it had been rainy and dark for weeks, everyone was feeling really down because of it. Then the day she showed up the sun came out, someone at my work commented how much nicer everyone was being because of the sun, and I said "ya it's amazing what a little sunshine can do", it just seemed made for her.
      I only just came up with Prudence's name the other day, she is naturally named after the beatles song. I'd been wracking my brain trying to come up with a name for her, looking literally everywhere I could think of, finally I gave up and decided she was just going to be nameless. That night I was listening to music and realized that it was perfect for her. So, I only found her name when I stopped looking and started listening:lol:

    19. I had the other problem! I had names, but no doll that suited them until I found the AOD An sculpt and went 'My goodness! That's Erdric!' I think I went through every single doll company looking! I found Aryun the same way. Lyr got his name through 'The Last Unicorn'. I bought him on layaway, and in that time frame, I had gone through a lot of baby name books and websites and I could find nothing I enjoyed. It was ironic that 'The Last Unicorn' by America was playing when I opened his box, and once I got him dressed 'That's All I've Got To Say' was playing and it hit me: Prince Lyr. Suits him perfectly.
