Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. How Long Before You Named Them / The Importance of Naming

Jun 15, 2008

    1. I always have a name picked out before a doll arrives. Some of my dolls (and many that I don't yet have), are based on characters from my stories, so they already have names and personalities to go with them. If I find a doll that I want, but don't have a character for, I will still come up with at least a name before arrival. I think it makes them seem more like part of the gang instead of being a nameless face among all the named dolls. :3

    2. I only have one doll at the moment, but I named him before he even arrived. I usually try to create a backstory so names are pretty important to me.

    3. I knew as soon as I started looking to purchase a doll that her name would be Brielle. Even after I decided what doll I wanted, I still was 150% sure that she would be Brielle. And now I have Brielle :)

    4. I didn't name my doll until I put on her wig. The bridge of her nose is very prominent, and the bangs of her black wig slid down her head over her eyes... I blurted out that she looked a little like Joey Ramone, and thus she became Ramona (She probably would have been named Joey if she were male).

My next doll pretty much named herself, and fit into another character's story like she belonged there.

    5. i already have a name even before i order..i actually have difficulty naming them, as i'm very picky about names..:D

    6. If I remember right, Alexander got his name decided soon after I got him home. I think it only took couple of days until I got his name. But well. First I thought about naming him Caleb Alexander Elijah Crosshill and that he was called by his middle name. But then that first name just dropped off (don't really know how) and other names were left. Yup.

Aaria was tougher one. Firts she had no name at all and I thought that she was supposed to be nameless creature who doesn't remember her name anymore or something like that. Then I thought that she must have at least one name to be called with and decided that Alex would have given her a name. That name was Dream.

But soon I decided that she should have a decent name. So I looked up like hundreds of Finnish names (I wanted her to have Finnish name because she is a Finnish creature). I also wanted her to have unique name which made the naming process even harder. Then I started to think Finnish words for any kinf on nature things and such but still didn't come up with anything good enough. I then decided that she wouldn't necessarily need to have a name which came from nature and then I finally figured it out. Aaria (meaning aria), that was it. All that naming process did take couple of months.

Oodi was hard one too. I wanted something which would sound cute and be perfect for a little cute girl like her. And also that it would be something that would match with Aaria's name and such. I also didn't want her to have a name starting with A because I also had two dolls with names beginning with A's. But the problem solved soon (and before Oodi even came home) with a help of my dear friend who is also a doll person. She came up with the name Oodi (meaning ode) and that kind of got stuck in my head :)

    7. Depends. Some as soon as I ordered them and before they even arrive. Some take a much longer time as I tend to buy sculpts that appeal to me physically and not based on characters. I have a couple that are not even named even now. My cast are mainly named Japanese names starting with K.

    8. I only have one doll at the moment but the second I held her her name came to me. Anethena. I have no idea where it came from, but it just popped into my head and stuck as her name. It helped me bond very quickly to her. Im not sure if that will always happen, though it would be great if it did! :)

    9. I name my dolls after I get a feel of their "character"; this may be based on sculpt, what I end up buying for them, etc. I usually have a general idea of what I already want to name my doll though.

    10. I've named him three weeks before I ordered him! But maybe it will change!

    11. I usually have one or two ideas for names before they arrive, but I never settle on one until they're here. Kind of like with pets. I do come up with persona's for my dolls before they come home, but they tend to change a bit once the doll arrives.

At the moment I'm torn between choosing a name that has a lot of meaning for me, over a name that seems to really suit the doll and sound more affectionate. It can be quite a dilemma and I think it's important to take time to get the right name.

    12. I usually name them before I have them in my hand.
Though I did just order a new one, that doesn't have a name yet. He has a few possibilities but I'llhave to wait until I have him in my hands to see what personality fits him best. So for now when I talk about him to my friend, he's just known as "The Baby" :D

    13. Sometimes a name will just pop into my head (either before or after arrival) and other times I really have to work at it. That's when I go to the various baby-naming websites and try to find something unusual, yet fitting. I really prefer it when the right name just jumps at me -- so much easier!!

    14. For my first doll I had chosen two names and a day or two after she arrived I gave her her name. My other dolls where characters of her story, so first the name than the doll

    15. I'm getting my first one just for the cuteness factor. As it's genderless, I really don't know what to call it, including 'him' or 'her'. Some of the clothes I picked out are girly, others are fine for boys. I do have a character or two whose name might fit it, albeit a bit long...

I may check out a name generating site just for the fun of it. There's one for the races in an rpg I'm in, so maybe that will come up with some accurate ideas.

Or, it will tell me it's gender, and maybe shout a name at me!

    16. The doll I bought was based after an OC in my head, so he already had his name. It was supposed to be Felinnix, but soon it changed to be 'Felinus' because of his calm face, he didn't seem all that lively.

Also I take characters from history, and change up their names a little. When I finally get the money for a female doll her name will be Constantia, after Constantine the Great of Rome, also I thinkhe named one of his daughters Constantia..

    17. I already had a name planned out...actually, I have a list of names and then I just match them when they come in.

    18. Usually I have a name already for them, but sometimes they get here and change names when I see them. I think its a bad sign when I cant name a doll right away, usually means they arent going to stick around.

    19. It took my about a month to choose my doll's name. It had to match with his look, and I didn't have the right wig for him for a long time. I also didn't want it to be a made-up name, an elf name, or a japanese name, because the feel I got from him was that he would find that kind of thing a little pretentious. I wanted it to be a name that I liked and one that I hadn't seen used by anyone else. Last, it had to remind me of incubi in some way, since that's what he was supposed to be. When I finally got the wig on him, I knew right away that he was Innes.

    20. Gnome names, or Halfling names...for the wee dollies.
