How Long Before You Named Them / The Importance of Naming

Jun 15, 2008

    1. I don't have a BJD yet, but I have had a Blythe for quite a while and she still hasn't gotten a name... (I'll probably decide on one once I'm finished customizing her *__*; )

IMO names are incredibly important; they express the personality of the doll in one word, so to speak. Owners have discussed the names and personalities of dolls coming out on their own, so I would rely on that. :aheartbea

    2. Some of mine had names before they came, just had to find the right mold to fit them. Others I liked the mold, and got named once they arrived. I have three that still do NOT have names though...they are MSD size and I'm just not bonding with them like the tinies and SD's.

    3. It probably sounds weird but when I look at dolls and I see one I want to buy I start coming up with a story for them and a way they can fit into the family and a look for them, then if I can give them a name it seals the deal and I buy them. So all mine sort of came with the name, I wouldn't buy them if I couldn't name them.

    4. I've named all of my dolls way beforehand - WAAY beforehand, because they're all based on my roleplay characters!

But don't worry about - The name will smack you in the face randomly, and you'll know. ;) That's how it happened with Karo (my only non-rp character doll).

    5. I pretty much have a character in mind and then go looking for the perfect sculpt to fit it rather than the other way around. So they're usually named well in advance of their arrival. But I have had a few exceptions to this...dolls that once I completed their face-up, somehow seemed to "tweak" their own characters to the point that the original name no longer fit. As an example of this, I was determined to have a colored-resin elf type character named Dragonfly and after an extensive search, chose the very unique looking Bobobie blue Charisma as the perfect mold for her. Once her face-up and costume was finished, she immediately announced to the world in no uncertain terms that she was actually a blue djinn (genie) and demanded a new name to better fit what she saw as her elevated fantasy status.:doh Within 24 hours of intense searching, I found the perfect name: Jinniyah which simply means "female genie", yet has a very elegant sound to it and she was happy. BJDs may not tell you exactly what their name "is" immediately upon arrival, but they will certainly tell you what their name is "not"! it is simply a matter of coming up with new names and trying them on for size until the doll finally accepts one. :)

    6. I just ordered my Sapphira and I already have a name for him, Eiji, its meaning is "excellent second son, splendid ruler" the meaning was important to the storyline of my characters.

    7. Hmm...naming is like random with me, I usually name after or before buying, but never after I get them, unless its the last name...the last name is always hard for me to choose in comparison to the first name. *Sighs*

    8. I had my name already picked out long before I got him, and it fits well

choose like your fav name for a boy or girl, or just starting calling him wutever come to mind her it might stick thats how my dog Boo Boo got his name hahah

      so ya

    9. My first still doesn't have an official name and she has been with me since November 2007. A few days after i ordered the next one her name just popped in my head and I knew it was exactly right.
When naming I generally let names find me rather than decide on one first, and this usually works. It isn't even that I worry about it but my first is really being stubborn :?

    10. I have my first one ordered and it will arrive some time next month and I still don't have a name for him, I figured when I'd see him for the first time I'd decide good name based on how he looks. but right now I'm stating to have some names in mind. It will probably be Japanese which sounds kinda weeaboo-y but oh well I have a nack with coming up with Japanese boys names and I think it will suit him well.

    11. I had a name picked out for my doll before I bought it, but like anything I name, it's all subject to change. When I was on my way to pick up my labrador puppy from the breeder, I had decided he'd be either Gage or Shadow. It was a three hour drive from my house to the breeder, and four hours back due to foul weather, and gage stuck, but somewhere between the garage and the back door to show him the potty spots, the name Hunter came to mind and it has remained ever since. Now that I reflect, Shadow and Gage just didn't fit him, and Hunter was perfect. I have very little doubt that the same thing will happen in this circumstance. I'm doing a box opening tomorrow for my first BJD and I have the names Vincent, Caine and Lakai picked out. The middle and last were fairly easy to stick with, (First Name Emmanuel Delacroix) but the first name depends entirely on what I see my boy as. I pick up names pretty quick, so I'd say it'll take me no less than an hour.

    12. Usually I figure a background and personality for the critter in order to name them. Sometimes I look at their features and figure something out. Or a name pops into my head and 'feels' right. It depends.

Lately though I haven't been able to decide a name for my boy. I have a sort of background and a personality but i can't find a name that fits just right. A name did pop t in my head but i'm not sure it works: Dremlin.. I've been calling him that but it still feels iffy and not right.. Not sure how to approach this.

    13. I still don't have my first doll yet, but I'v been looking up names for him for about...3 months. It took me a long time to find one I liked and that I thought would suit him. But now that I have, I really like it. Noe I just have to choose a name for my next doll. -__-

    14. Maybe I'm a little bit strange, I dreamt about my BJD's - and they get names in my dream - so I used them. Especially since after that, I kept on using the names when talking about them. The weird thing is - they aren't names I would have chosen. But that's been for some of my BJD's.

For the one's I bought from the marketplace - the girls names are based on their previous names. The boy was named because that's what he looked like.

Names are important to me, as the name is a part of their personality and history.

But in a lot of ways it stems from the BJD itself and how they affect me on a sub-conscious level, rather than some storyline or consciously applied history.

    15. Asneth> What a wonderful way to name your BJD's ! Unfortunately I never dream about mine ^^

I try to choose before they came but it never works... the first one waited around two days until I found one. And now I don't like it very much (even if it fit him quite well). The last one still wait for her name... I not really good for such things ><

    16. 2 of my dolls are based on my characters so they had names even before I got them. My very first doll was a little version of me, so it was just a matter of deciding which of the names I go by would be best for her. As I was buying her parts I decided on Kasumi (my Japanese name) since I was in Japan at the time.

    17. I named mine as soon as I knew I wanted him! He's been Jasper longing that he's been alive!! n__n

    18. When I find a mold that I really love, I set up a character for it. And one of the first things I try to come up with are the clothing style, male or female, and the name.
So when I am creating a character for a doll, I have found a name very fast and I never change those.
For me a name is the first step for bonding with the character, although the doll is far from ordered yet then. ;)

I would never buy a doll if I hadn't got a name for it yet.

    19. It doesn't sound weird to me, as that's how I go through the whole buying process as well. Sometimes I come up with a nickname first, then the full name follows shortly after.

    20. I have had names picked out for some of mine but when they would get here the name just didn't seem to fit them. Then I would feel guilty  that I hadn't named them yet but eventually the right :aheartbea name would just suddenly come to them or me. So now I have Shilo, Arwin, Rio and Byron and they seem very happy with them.
