How many bjds do you own and what are they?

Sep 8, 2022

    1. Hi, I was wondering on average how many bjds a person owned? Do you ever go “that’s too much” or “that’s too little”? How recent is your collection and how much money have you spent on them? It’s nice seeing everyone’s replies!

    2. I currently have 12 bjds, various brands and sizes and a couple of heads. I always try to keep my profile up to date with my dolls. I don’t think my collection is big but I might try to keep it at this amount just to save space. I don’t really know how much I’ve spent on bjds, since some of them are very old. XD I’m obsessed with eyes so I have spent more money on eyes than anything else lol.

    3. I currently have 16 dolls at home, one is in the making and hopefully will arrive before christmas. All of them are different sizes and brands. Well I spended several thousands of Euro for them, I still know how much I spent for every single doll. XD I also don't think that my collection is big, but I don't buy many dolls at once, most of the time just one per year, so my collection is growing slowly. ^^

There are also a few with on-topic bodies but off-topic heads
EDITED TO ADD: Size wise, Daisy Bacon is the giant 80cm girl
The "main" group are my SD-sized family of "Victorian" children (with a few smaller dolls as the younger siblings), whihc is 18 SD-sized kids and a few MSD sized.
A handful of other MSD size, and some slim minis, then half a dozen in-between MSD and YoSD size, then a group of Yo-sized tinies, and 10 tee-nie tinies. There are a few odd-sized ones in the mix too.

I started getting them in around 2004 (Alphie, Sera, Raphael, and Elfie were the first couple of years) and the most recent is from this year, though last year saw a bunch of them arrive all together when I married-up some headless bodies and floating heads I'd accumulated over the years. I've long since lost track of how much money... especially when you factor in money coming in again from the ones who have moved on because they didn't mesh/bond/whatever.

I know when I get to too many when there are dolls that sit untouched/not-played-with for long periods. When I went over thirty BJD I noticed this happen, and thought thirty was my limit, but then realized that for that number , "tinies don't count" as I play with the tinies differently than I do with the larger dolls (possibly because it's easier to find props and furniture for them... I think).

Now, the real problem is space.

I think I'm at (or very close to) capacity.

The influx last year, and a couple more this year, have severely taxed my ability to find space for them all. It's not just the dolls - there's all the clothes, shoes, and accessories too. A few teenie-tinies coud be squeezed in, I suppose, but... my eye always goes to bigger dolls first.

I don't keep the boxes (except for a token few in case I need to package up dolls I sell on), as that would just make it impossible,in terms of space, and I don't see the point of keeping dolls packed away unless I'm handling/playing with them... They'd never get played with that way because the faff of unboxing and reboxing them each time would take up a lot of time I could actually be playing with them, so I'd seldom bother doing it.

    5. I'm pretty new in this hobby [first doll ordered back in February 2022] so currently I have only 2 SD dolls + 1 MSD pre-ordered.

Since I am able to actually track all of my BJD-related orders I did a little data-digging and here's so far:

app. 1600 USD - cost of dolls
app. 340 USD - cost of accessories [wigs, clothes, eyes]
app. 250 - shipping, PayPal fees, VAT, etc.

I'm sadly not able to track any custom fees that I have paid for each package, and let me tell you, these are also pain as can be up to 1/3 cost of the doll :/ I also do not count art supplies + fabric [as I had not opportunity to actually do any face-up or sew anything yet].
Considering I'm from Eastern Europe that is quite a lot and I need to exchange USD to my country currency.

I don't think there's such thing as "too little", although in terms of calling someone collector I'd expect to see, hmmm, around +10 dolls? So I don't consider myself one [yet]. Too much is an easy one! I have a small one bedroom apartment I share with my partner and if I can't exacly pinpoint where a doll will be stored/seated once it arrives, it means I went overboard :sweat

I remember planning to buy only one doll to get that long-overdue dream fullfilled and look at me 6 months later, I do not plan to stop anytime soon.

    6. Presently have 30 full dolls. Don't get me wrong, I love each and every one of them (if I don't love a doll I sell it) and I don't regret buying them. That said, it is still a lot of money.

The breakdown is this: 27 of these dolls are your regular bjd, head and body together. 3 of them are those little pet dolls that you get from events sometimes, so they technically don't count (they don't have all the same joints). I also have one floating head, and, oops, 3 more floating heads on the way (two of them will belong to the same doll, probably). To finish, I have one other full doll on order, and I'm about to buy another. The recent releases (and re-releases in the case of the heads) have not been kind to my bank account. All together, both owned and on order and incomplete, that's 35, soon to be 36.

Size breakdown: 9 SD (or larger) sized, 15 MSD sized, 2 YoSD sized, and 1 lati yellow. Then the three technically-not-true-bjds, the pet dolls. The one head I have in person is an SD sized head.

So that's what I have, and that's what they are. There's a nearly full list on my profile here of specific sculpts. Have I ever thought it's too much? Absolutely. Without any hyperbole, I have spent probably 7k or more on dolls over the past 9 years. I'd be lying if I said I haven't thought about offloading the whole lot and rolling in the cash. But they're important to me, and they're an active hobby for me, so I'm usually alright with how much I've spent. What else would I have spent it on, anyway?

Basically there's a lot of them, some are recent and some are from up to 9 years ago, I have spent a lot on them, but I don't regret it.

    7. I currently have 27 BJDs at home that I’ve paid for or received as gifts. And 13 full OT 3D printed BJDs I made myself.

I also have 6 BJDs currently on order, with plans to buy 2-3 in an upcoming preorder later this month.

My number fluctuates quite a bit, because I buy and sells dolls fairly often.

I’m about to go bed, so I’m too tired to type out all the names right now, so I’ll edit them into the post when I wake up. <3

    8. Well, apparently I currently have 30 full on topic dolls, and a small quantity of heads and a few outliers. I regret counting. :XD: I feel and have felt for years that it was too many. Around 20 I felt it was too many but here we are. I'm trying not to increase numbers at this point, only decrease but it's hard and it's slow because I do love them all very much. My hobby, I don't view it as the purpose of collecting, so having more is not the actual goal, which is how I feel there could be fewer and it might be better. My hobby is customizing and imagination :XD:
At one point I had determined my dolls each averaged about $300-$350? In what I had bought them for, and I think it's probably stayed about the same with my whole collection until now. (I have had a lot of success hunting for lower cost bjds second hand with only a few outliers over my normal spending range). I don't know how much I spent on their stuff and my craft materials over the last 12 years because it's a long time :sweat
A significant portion of my dolls I've had for about/ close to a decade, and I have another grouping of them that's newer (less than 4 years?) I think I ended up selling many from my middle years collecting as I was exploring and changing taste. I think I have so many of the dolls I got in my first couple years because I find them extra sentimental.

    9. My first BJD is a hybrid, of a Volks DDI, which was a hybrid doll itself of Volks own making (part BJD, part action figure!). I can't recall the prices of all, so I'll list their heights instead. I do recall my Mano's price, because he is the most expensive blank canvas/toy/doll I own and will ever pay for a doll of any sort (ever! I don't regret it, but I can still hear my wallet screaming more than a decade later). He wasn't as expensive as other dolls can be, within this or any other type of doll-hobby, but for me he was the most I am willing to spend on a non-electronic type of toy (gaming system, is what I mean, not any other type of electronic toy). It was my goal to own ten BJD or less, I feel like I don't need anymore, and hadn't purchased any in more than ten years until my recent mature tiny male. If I am tempted again, by another mature tiny, I might add one more. Otherwise, I am happy with no more BJD ever again. I own too many floating heads, but I never set myself a limit with those -- I just don't feel like purchasing any more (if I could have Minimee cast/formed in PVC, I would go that route, but that's probably never happening. So, I'm all good, as far as never adding more BJD to my collection!). (:

      1. CP/Luts Vampire Dark Elf Soo on a Volks Dollfie Dream I body - 60cm
      2. SoulDoll Paris - 62-3cm
      3. Dollzone Mo-Wen - 42cm
      4. Limhwa Limho Mano - 67cm (775USD +s/h, blank, no wig, no eyes)
      5. Dollzone BB July - 26cm (I used to own a whole doll, but now it's just his head -- I don't do well with infant-looking dolls. He's just a floating head now, but I did own the full doll once.)
      6. SoulDoll Bebe Aku - 14cm
      7. Fairyland Chic Line Rou - 40cm
      8. Myou Bettina (male) - 28.8cm

Floating heads, all meant to go on 60cm+ bodies:
      Souldoll Zeneth Chu
      Souldoll Double Iso
DIM Minimee Sephiroth, Crisis Core Half-closed eyed vers.
      DIM Minimee Kadaj, FVII: AC
      DIM Minimee Lelouch, Code Geass
DIM Leon S. Kennedy, RE4 vers.
DIM Minimee Raiden, Custom Mod -- can't recall original sculpt's character's name
DIM Minimee Sephiroth, privately ordered CC version (only two casts made, owned by me)

I wish all of these were PVC/ABS, and that none were vinyl, or resin. I wouldn't mind owning an army and paying what I had to pay for some of them, if they were all not-resin cast dolls and 30cm mature-looking-idealized-males (not all of these are the proportions I would find ideal, in a doll). I don't believe I paid too little for any, but I do feel like I ended up paying too much for my most expensive doll, because he was just a few months later, lowered by a lot (like 300USD less, than what I paid brand new. But maybe it was years later, and not months -- my brain suffers from what I like to call old age since very young).

    10. I agree that using our profiles is a good way to keep up with what we have and what is incoming/wished for. I even used the list in my estate planning. I have nearly 70 bjd alone. As you said in your post, that does not include all the accoutrement that is needed for these dolls. I also have a collection of other dolls such as Vogues, Himstedt and my own sculpts.

    11. Looking at the people here esp ‘teddy’ who has such a large number of dolls I feel it’s really amazing. :cheer I don’t mean to be rude if this is a personal question but how do you guys afford so many? Esp since all of these dolls are prob like $100-$1000 each and need their own clothes and stuff. It’s even bigger to me as I’m not in the uk or us so the amount of money becomes a lot bigger in my own currency. I don’t ever think I’ll be able to have such a huge collection but I’m definitely going to try.

    12. Well, mine were accumulated over an eighteen-year period, so weren't all purchased at one time (two or three dolls a year, or one doll every four-and-a-half months)

I sew, so make a lot of their clothes. Plus, I make rag dolls to sell, which boosts my dolly fund from time to time. I don't own a car so there's no money going out on that. I don't drink, smoke, or wear expensive clothes or shoes, so don't waste money on those things. I'm not a foodie, so I'm not expensive to feed. I don't go on expensive holidays or trips, and when we do go (whihc isn't often) our flights are part (or all) paid in air-miles accumulated through a store-card used for our weekly grocery shopping.

Some of my dolls were gifts from my husband for Christmas and/or birthdays, like last year when he took paid the layaway for one of my dolls. Many of them are hybrids with heads and/or bodies from the less expensive end of the market and/or bought second hand. I rarely go for fullsets as there's usually something about what's included that I don't like (so why pay for a fullset that includes something you'll never use) and often buy them unpainted as I can do my own faceups or save up for someone to do the type of faceup I prefer.

One of my SD sized hybrids was payment for a wedding dress I made.

For my biggest, and probably most expensive, BJD (Dollmore Lusion) I had an incredible piece of luck. I had decided to save up by putting money away in an old account I hadn't used in decades. I used it to save for holidays when I was inewly graduated. I had given up using the account as it was complicated to transfer money out of (back before internet banking and such). When I dug out the details and checked into it, I found that the small sum I'd left in the account when I last used it, had accrued a LOT of interest while sitting there untouched over the years, and the total amount in the account was now almost exactly the amount I needed to buy the doll I had been planning on saving up for. I took that as a sign I was meant to have the doll and bought her immediately instead of waiting until I had saved enough to buy her.

So I guess my answer boils down to:
      - Luck (in one case),
      - Occasional gifts,
      - Not spending a lot on other things.

      Teddy

    14. I was introduced to bjds by friends who were already collecting them and there were regular meetups in our area. At the meetups I saw second hand dolls I loved but thought I would never be able to afford even at their reduced price...but then my friends started offering to barter! I can sew, and made doll size hats which are easier to fit on a variety of dolls than some other clothes. Sometimes I was commissioned to make specific hats or clothes for specific dolls. Sometimes I just made a pile of hats to sell at a meetup. Or my friends commissioned me to make hats for all their dolls for a theme. If it wasn't a barter for a doll then I saved up these funds to pay toward a doll. And it was much easier to pay for a second hand doll rather than a new release high priced doll until I got better informed on the whole bjd world. Even buying new I could only do when the companies had special event sales. Except for one artist sculpt that tugged at my heart enough to make an exception...and in that case I decided she was a piece of art I wanted to invest in. ;}
I've definitely had qualms after hitting the payment button. But then I'd review the finances & confirm it wasn't money I needed elsewhere, it wasn't a poor decision and as Teddy says I don't spend money on coffees, new clothes, stylish shoes, makeup, vacations or other luxuries beyond basics of home & car so dolls are my luxury
Any number of dolls over 3 or 4 can feel overwhelming at times...same with my books...or my fabric...or my tendency to buy small tables or comfy chairs for my house! I have over 50 bjds now. Mostly 58-65cm SDs which take up a lot of space!?!?! Along with my vintage dolls...and my antique dolls...and my artist made dolls...and my play dolls...I sometimes wonder how this doll thing happened over the past 25years!?!? But when I think hard about downsizing & who to pack away, to maybe sell, I don't find any I'm ready to give up. Good thing my family is ok with living among all my art! ;D

    15. I’ve been collecting continuously since 2006, at the rate of roughly 3 dolls per year. My collection currently stands at 51 (they are all listed by company in my profile if you’re curious. I always keep that 100% up to date.) All are on-topic BJDs (any other dolls I ever collected over the years were enjoyed for awhile but then moved on to make more room for bjds.):sweat I’ve always purchased them on layaway to comfortably roll the payments into my regular household budget, so I’ve never considered the totals spent (nor would I ever want to!) I really don’t spend money on any other luxuries for myself. I much more enjoy investing in my imagination and creativity, so it all works out comfortably for me and my family. The dolls are all on display in decorative vignettes throughout my home (like art) which my entire family enjoys. I most often do my own faceups and sew their wardrobes, which enhances the creative, artistic aspects for me. And I love creating their characters…it’s such a wonderful way to use my imagination!

Of course there have been times over all these years that I’ve questioned if I had too many…if perhaps I just needed to set a numerical limit and stick to it. But I’ve created a special fantasy world where characters of all shapes and sizes interact with one another in an artistic way, and I’m just not willing to give that up! For me, if a doll has a special story to tell then I want to be the one to tell it…and I want to live with them forever to see where that story goes!:)

    16. I started collecting bjd a year and a half ago, I have 16 now and 2 ordered, they are listed in my profile and I currently have doll profiles for the ones I have. I don’t think I have too many or not enough because I don’t really keep a number in my head of how many I should have. The only limit to that is I don’t want more than I can display in the doll room. I usually spend $200-300 for each of them but there are a couple exceptions.

    17. I've been in the hobby since like 2011 and got my first doll in 2012. I currently have 2 and a floating head (....and a floating vinyl Dollfie head but I don't know if that counts) but I had a 3rd one that I sold before I got my SD girl-- I've got a body on my list and another SD girl not yet on the way, but on my mind (which is gonna be happening a lot sooner than I thought since they raised student worker pay to 15/hr instead of 10!!!)

I personally don't think I could handle a big group, my max is probably about 5 for my own sanity.

      I think in like...total I've spent maybe 1,100? not including wigs...and clothes...other things...

    18. Right now, I have 16 at home and 2 on the way. 11 of them are Dollfie Dreams, which while technically on topic they aren't always considered BJDs. Among those dolls, 5 are 1/4 scale and the rest are 1/3 scale. All Volks dolls. I started collecting in 2016(? I think) with a Bobobie Sprite my father gifted me for Christmas, but she's in an unfortunate state right now and I don't count her as part of my collection till she gets a dye bath and new faceup. Most of my current collection was purchased in 2019-2022.
Overall, I've probably spent around ~$7k USD on the dolls themselves and ~$3k+ in clothing, shoes and wigs. I plan to keep the doll count below 30 or so hopefully. Originally, I wanted to stay below 20, but that's approaching far too fast...
