How many bjds do you own and what are they?

My answer to the 'How many?'-question is, and always will be, "TOO MANY!"
That was true even back when I only had Harumatsu and Tien Jen, my first pair.

These days? I have what could best be described as a small tribe. (If you're really curious who and what they all are, the whole gang is listed on my profile page. Most have entries in the Doll Profiles section of the site. too... Though I've gotten really lazy about adding anyone there over the last couple of years, so there are some who don't have detailed pages yet. 'Most of my Lati guys, for instance, or some of my Volks FCS dolls-) Anyway, yeah. By any objective standard, I have a very large group of dolls.

I'm not an artist out to Create My Vision, though, or a writer trying to find physical avatars for fictional mind-babies. I'm "just a collector". I'm in it to have a big group of fun, cool-looking dolls to tinker around with and occasionally put in front of a camera.

As for affording a crew the size of mine... When I joined the hobby I was already a little older than average and so a little more established financially-speaking. A lucky career pick, no kids, no large debts and no other particularly pricey hobbies meant that I had the resources to pretty much go all-in on what I wanted... Within reason, anyway. I have a "fun money" account that I put a certain amount in every month and I don't go over that. After seventeen years, the acquisitions add up. (Especially if you're prone to getting sets with "alternate" heads that inevitably wind up with bods of their own! )

 

I’ve been collecting for almost 17 years now so I have a pretty large collection. If I counted right I’ll have 44 dolls in my collection once my Volks Anna arrives (hopefully soon!). Some of them are considered off-topic so not all of them are listed in my profile but otherwise it’s kept up to date if you are curious. I’m working on having profiles for all of them too. I have no idea how much I’ve spent on all of them but I know it had to be quite a lot just because of the sheer volume of dolls. I don’t really buy a ton of clothes and accessories for them. Aside from Darcy who’s my clothes horse I usually try to find one or two high quality outfit for each of them and “default” eyes and wig that they always stay in.

As for how I can afford them if you do the math 44 dolls in 17 years is 2-3 dolls per year. I’m in my 30s and well established in my career so I’m not struggling with money and I budget for my dolls. I’m single and I don’t have children so that makes it easier to spend money on hobbies. I’ve participated in events and done a bit of trading in the hobby and bought many of my dolls secondhand. I’m also friends with a couple doll sculptors so a few of my dolls are experimental or B and C grade rejects and those were payment for work that I did for my friends. I used to take faceup commissions regularly and I’d always put that money aside for doll stuff. Also layaway makes it a lot less painful to buy a doll.

My feelings on my collection are very similar to what PoeticSoul said. I sometimes wonder if it’s too much but I genuinely enjoy each and every one of my dolls and I don’t spend a lot of money on other luxuries. They all have their own personalities and stories. I also do my own faceups and occasionally I will make eyes or wigs and sew or crochet for them so they are a huge creative outlet for me.

Except for Amir, all of my dolls are in the 1/3 range, between 52-65cm. Amir is 1/4 because he was my first doll before I decided I prefer larger dolls. All are human. I tend to flip flop as to whether I prefer male or female. I have been in the hobby for over 14 years, and while I often buy and sell dolls, it's mostly just selling to pay for the next, so I'm averaging about 1-2 dolls per year out of pocket. Because my hobby money tends to stay in the hobby and just cycle through, I have no idea how much I've actually spent. I feel pretty good about my number, though sometimes I think it's a little high. I'd prefer 13 or fewer, but then I can't stand the thought of letting any go, so it stays. Nineteen is my hard limit--I've had up to 39 at a time and it was overwhelming. So no more than 19 now! If I hit that limit, I have to consider if it's worth selling anybody to bring in anybody else.

 

I'm just over a year into the hobby, I have 6 dolls, with number 7 and 8 on the way and all but one boy are MSD sized, and I've recently been looking into getting some YoSD sized dolls. I'm about 7k into it at this point on just dolls, thats in CAD and then another $400 on wigs, clothes and faceups, I make eyes and accessories myself but I'm about $300 into that for clay, resin, jewelery making supplies and fabric. It's an expensive hobby, but I love it

 

About six years ago, a friend introduced me to BJDs by giving me one of her dolls, ResinSoul “Ming.” I went on to purchase ResinSoul “Mei” and “Fei” myself. My most recent acquisition is Angel of Dream “Mu Yanzi.” So, I currently own four BJDs. I imagine I’ll fall in love with another BJD sooner or later and have to have it. I’ve already spent more money than I want to admit on the BJDs I have.

I've been in the hobby for almost a year--I ordered my first doll in October of 2021. I currently have 3 MSD's (with another on pre-order) and a tiny. All of my dolls other than the tiny are on my profile.

I learned some years ago that I shouldn't really limit myself to a certain number of dolls, because I am really attached to all the dolls I currently have and would rather not sell one just to buy a new one. I already purged the ones I didn't care for over the years, so this is my solid crew. I am planning for sure on two more dolls to complete some character couples, and after that? Who knows! I will see what tickles my fancy, heh.

My favorite size is 1/3 and bigger, closely followed by 1/6 childlike dolls. I tolerate my 1/4 scales because they are fun and sentimental, but I do not have anymore dolls under 1/6 scale (tinies). They were just too small for me.

As to how much I've spent on the dolls is hard to say. I do have a Google Spreadsheet where I list their "new" prices, but some I got when they were already older for a good deal, or traded, and some I even got as gifts.

 

This thread is reminding me I need to continue setting up doll profiles!

I have five on-topic dolls at home, and I just put in on an in-stock one yesterday. In rough order of acquisition (defined as who I paid for first), we've got:

There's also two OT dolls, Monday and Orchid, who I count as part of the BJD gang. Everyone is MSD sized and fits in a single small cabinet I got for doll storage purposes. I'm not allowed to exceed cabinet capacity - I'm in a studio apartment, there's only so much space! They all lived in their boxes before I got the cabinet, but now I use their boxes for storing spare eyes, clothes, etc.

As for affording them... I'm one person who was lucky enough to be able to pay off my debts early on (I bought Ara as a celebration for paying off my student loans), I don't tend to go out much, and I work in tech. Low in the tech pecking order, but a bad pay tech job is good pay in many other fields, I'm seeing. Quite a terrifying trend.

I try to be mindful of only getting dolls I'm really interested in, and I don't go for fullsets, really. Plus I try to spread out the costs for expensive things, like faceups, shoes, and clothes I can't make, over time. What I make for them tends to either use thrifted materials or leftovers from human-size projects. I love me some mill ends, random chunks of fabric, and leftover balls of whatever.

 

I have 5 at home with one on layaway. I've been in the hobby for 10 years, but I went on hiatus between late 2013 through early 2022 when I bought my first doll after that long stretch of time!

Honestly, I'm not sure how many is too many for me. If space was not an issue, I think I would cap my collection off at around 10-15 which feels like an adequate amount.

I have no idea how much I've actually spent on my dolls. A rough estimate would be between $4500 - $5000 (includes doll, face ups, clothes, wig, eyes, etc.) It really is an expensive hobby, but the dolls bring me a lot of joy and comfort I don't think I could ever part with the hobby entirely

I started collecting in 2007, but most of my dolls were purchased in 2014 or later. As for cost stuff, I'm very fortunate to have a well paying job and I (usually) am very good about pacing my purchases so as not to have it impact my budget.

 

I currently have 4 BJD's, all MSD size, which I think helps with keeping costs a bit more reasonable. Each doll was under $400 (yes including the Minifee, I purchased a slightly damaged body second hand + used head to help w/ cost). They were all purchases made this year (new to the hobby since early summer, admittedly I went a little crazy with the excitement of a new hobby), but I'm lucky to have a good job and now that I'm writing more for each of the characters I'm slowing down quite a bit with purchases. Dolls on my wishlist I plan to hold off on until next year.
