How many dolls in your collection are complete and incomplete?

Aug 7, 2022

    1. For the purpose of your question I consider for myself that complete is: I am satisfied with them currently and for me it means they have enough wardrobe I should stop making more (but I won't) and everything else is not bothering me, whatever the situation is: body, Faceup, eyes, wig, shoes, etc.

By that metric I have something like:
      12 complete and 15 incomplete

It gets hard to be exact with a committment to some beloved part time characters living as floating heads or sharing bodies forever so I guess add on 5 or so part time characters :XD:

My hobby will never be set in stone however even liking to keep things changing I feel a difference between dolls more in the project stage and dolls who are already seasoned old friends that I don't worry about so much. But if I think of anything as complete with them it makes me a bit sad, I prefer to keep them I the stage of well understood but not retire from working on them.

    2. Most of my gang are complete,,, a few still need either their first faceup or an ancient one replaced (I'm terrible about waffling over who I want to send them to-), but everyone who needs a bod has one and no one is missing their proper outfits, hair or eyes. My usual practice is to have all of that lined up before the doll itself even arrives.

    3. I have 5 incomplete dolls atm, but one just needs her hooves blushed eventually, so she's mostly-done.

    4. For me, completeness includes their personality and place in the greater whole of my collection as much as how they look. By that criteria I'd say about 68% are complete, 12% are half way complete, and the remaining 20% are not at all complete... though of that 20%, most of them are new acquisitions and dolls not yet arrived.

    5. If you want to get technical, I have no complete dolls, because I'm never perfectly satisfied and will always find something to change. New eyes, new faceup, new wig, new clothes. Sometimes I'll buy a whole new body for a doll I've had for years.

But let's not get technical, let's define complete as "satisfied with the doll's current state" and "the doll has everything it needs (wig, eyes, faceup, clothes, any important fantasy parts)". In that case my ratio is 19:8, complete vs incomplete. (This isn't counting either my little event dolls/animals or the dolls I have on order.) Some of them are really close to being finished; most just need a faceup. One just needs a wig that I could make in one night, but I've been distracted. Another one is basically completely unfinished, since all she has is head and body.

So tl;dr at this point a majority of my dolls are complete, but I still have a few (mostly newer ones) that I'm working on.

    6. Oh my... lol. So, for me, "completeness" includes character/personality. In that regard, I have 17 complete and 1 incomplete. NOW... in terms of the dolls themselves, change that to 18 incomplete. :sigh Of those 18, I have: 8 who just need their blushing done and put together with their heads, 7 who have their heads at my friend's for faceups and will then need their blushing and put together, 1 on layaway who will be complete once paid off as she's keeping the factory faceup and I get her blushed, 1 on layaway who will need a faceup and blushing once paid off, and the last one who's a mess right now: he needs a body, faceup, and finally blushing. So I have a lot of work cut out for me. And lastly, on wardrobes (all will have their own), I'd say I'm about 50% complete on all of them, between what I still need to either buy or make for them. So it really varies between categories from 95% to 0% to 50%. Yes, I am all over the place!

    7. Right now, I have 14 complete dolls that I'm fully satisfied with, and 2 incomplete who just need new wigs and/or eyes. Most of their characters were established before they ever arrived home, so there's no issue there.

    8. I don't know what counts as a doll and what counts as complete for me, but I try to draw some lines...

I have one cabinet where all 10 dolls are finished in the sense that they have a character, outfits, wigs and so on. However, there's always something more I'd want them to have, whether it would be more props, a different new wig, a hand blushing, a chest blushing... If we consider this, they are all eternal projects.

The other cabinet then has somewhere between 5 and 10 dolls or headless bodies that are in various stages of incomplete. All have a vague character planned out, but some lack heads, most lack clothes and some lack wigs and faceups. I'm tackling the to-do list one thing at a time whenever I have the energy. I like to keep my complete and incomplete projects physically apart in separate cabinets so that I have at least one cabinet that does not look like a total mess. :XD:

    9. If I defined complete in the conventional way: has one outfit, one wig, one set of eyes, then they're all complete.

But, I want a huge collection of varied outfits (whole capsule wardrobes for each of my dolls), so I need some more underwear and lingerie, some skirts, tops, and a couple pairs of trousers. I sew by kinds of clothes. I have a whole big box of period dresses to clothe double the size of my current collection, but I need some contemporary casual stuff too. I got into BJDs mostly for the sake of their being the coolest fashion dolls out there, so designing and sewing is forever a process. The whole point is never to complete it and always feel inspired ot create something new.

      Eyes?
I'm not a huge eye-fan, I am happy with the cheapest glasses in regular, human-like colours: all shades of caramel, blue, green or purple (that's the most non-human I can go). I often change their eyes for fun too.

      Wigs?
I have enough wigs, but plan to make some more just for fun. Still, at the moment, it's about 3 wigs per doll.

      Faceup and blushing?
One of my dolls has a quick and messy-detailed faceup, that I was supposed to wipe out soona fterward, but she's had it for over half a year now and I like the shape of her painted face features too much to wipe it. Having read this thread, I realised, I might need to do some body blushing to one of my dolls whose yellowness starts to loo too greenish... She'd need some pink, I'm guessing ;)

      Shoes?
My shoe collection is beyond complete, but collecting the dolly shoes is like a hobby on its own, so I may add some few pairs. Even now, I'm waiting for two more.

      Photos?
There are still so many things I want to do with them. Poses, themes, interactions... I want to use their full potential ;)

    10. If I don’t count the dolls I’ve created myself, all but my newest doll are complete at the moment. The wig I need for my new girl hasn’t arrived yet, and I haven’t had the creative energy to work on her faceup just yet. Soon, I hope, because having incomplete dolls laying around makes me kinda anxious.

    11. 14 completed, 2 only need shoes to be complete, 1 is complete but needs minor alteration to her jacket, and one still needs a lot of work. Total of 18 dolls.

    12. Out of the current 158 there are 156 completed. The other two need... bodies :)

I am currently paying off one with a layaway and am not sure when I will tackle the other one as I want to get some from Little Monica first before they are gone T_T but both heads have face ups and are done to the degree they can be done without body right now.

I try to keep my collection completed, with completed I mean they have a face up, wig, some eyes and at least one outfit (or their standard outfit) - if they wear clothes and at least one set of photos in the finished state.

    13. Four are complete, two who will be complete once their heads get back from faceup artist. I have one who I *might* want to get modded and a new faceup... but I don't know.

    14. I would probably never consider myself done forever working on a doll, I could always change or add to them, but out of 10 currently 2 are waiting on planned minor finishing touches (ex: needing lashes) and 3 are decidedly incomplete (ex: not having a faceup)
This ratio is more than I'd like because I've had some new arrivals too close together this summer, I don't like the feeling of leaving them unfinished after receiving them

    15. Most of my dolls are complete in the sense that I like how they look. My definition for 'complete' is that they have their proper eyes, hair, etc., and two outfits. One is what they wear regularly and the other is a 'special' outfit or just a back up so they have something to change into. I'm waiting on some shoes for my DFH Scylla and some horns and and a second outfit for my Ringdoll Aries.

    16. I only have like 4 dolls and a floating head, but I would classify them as 2 complete 2 in-progress. (One needs a faceup for a blank head, the other is still on order and won't be home for months.) I bought my two boys as fullsets since I liked how all the sculpt, aesthetics, and vibes went together very much! In the future I plan to dedicate myself to buying them outfits and general doll accessories to make their world "come alive."

I consider them (my 2 girls) completed dolls even if I change their hairstyles/outfits once in a while. I like variety to make them look fresh but I won't change their eyes or face-up for example because I'm satisfied with what I have.

And since I like keep things even, I'll be selling my extra head eventually!

    17. For a doll to be complete to me they need to have satisfactory eyes, wig, and face-up. At least one pair of shoes and several outfits as well is preferable. I currently have 6 I consider complete, though the 2 Real Puki's need their shoes painted, and 18 are incomplete. Most of the incomplete ones need face-ups, but a couple just have wigs that need to be styled.

I have the supplies to give them face-ups, I just need to do them!

    18. I consider all my dolls "complete" except for one floating head which I will never likely complete. Maybe someday I'll feel excited about him again and buy him a body. Or maybe I'll gift him to a 13 year old in 10 years.

I can't really enjoy blank naked dolls so they tend to move out of that phase very quickly. I also don't buy dolls anymore that I don't want to immediately complete. That's a lot of the fun of buying a new doll and I'm very excited to do it!

    19. The vast majority of my dolls is both complete and incomlpete by those definitions.

But if complete means that they have all their parts, a basic personality and backstory and at least a few outfits that makes sense for them, then I have 7 complete dolls, 2 incomplete that are both long term projects and 1 tiny who does have all her parts and a box full of outfits, but not much of a personality yet and even her name is still kind of not entirely decided. She is more of a mannequin to me, even if I really do like her.
That only counts on topic dolls, of course.

With that said, I do work continously on all my dolls. Developeing their backstories, making new stuff for them and general maintanence. I don't think I ever had a doll so finished that there was nothing left to do with it.

    20. I would say I have 4 complete dolls and 3 incomplete
I haven't fully found Clothing to suit them yet so I'm just digging until I do
I try and really plan before i buy so I can have things before they get here but sometimes things don't go as planned haha
