Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. Hybrids other than body/head?

Feb 24, 2022

    1. I did a quick search and couldn't find a thread on this, but it's a hard thing to search for. If it exists I apologize.

Does anybody hybrid dolls apart from swapping heads on different bodies? (Hands, feet, arms, legs, even torso pieces...) My sense is that jointed hands from other companies are the next most common, but I would love to learn about other combinations people have tried.

Please share pictures if you have them!

    2. You might check the project journals & modification projects.
Over the years I've enjoyed seeing posts by brave bjd folks swapping all sorts of body parts as well as shortening, lengthening & carving arms, legs & heads. They've been awe inspiring & fascinating.
Because the engineering varies from company to company there are modification issues that come up, fitting knee, elbow, wrist or ankle joints. There have also been posts I've enjoyed reading discussing what did or didn't work & sometimes how they overcame the problem. But I can't give you any reference links off the top of my head.

      Myself, most of my swaps have been heads, hands & feet. For example Unidoll is an old company who's guy dolls have oddly glove like clunky hands. I learned at just the right time that the company sculptor had changed jobs & was working at Raurencio Studio where they sculpted a nicer male hand in a similar proportion. I was able to order a pair of hands, they fit the wrist joint & improve my dolls style! But that was several years ago...and I now have 2 more Unidoll bodies, because.... And now I need 2 more pairs of hands! The other day I was looking through my spare body parts box (everyone has one, right?!?!), & realized i have a spare pair of Soom hands because my Spinel uses Soom werewolf hands. The resin match isn't perfect. And the wrist joint fit isn't as good but it's better than the Unidoll clunky hands for now. The trick is to then keep track of what I've swapped & make notes in case it's info I need later when selling a doll. ;}

    3. @Sicktress has a really rad Another Secret Mr Wolf who is on a body cobbled together out of spare parts (including Chalco hooves). She painted the whole thing blue and it looks like he was always meant to be that way, but she is also a built-an-articulated-mermaid-tail-on-the-fly level modder, so Iโ€™m sure she had a better sense than most of us about what would work well together. :XD:

Personally Iโ€™m more likely to hybrid hands as you said. Hand sculpts are a total deal breaker for me, so if I like a body but its hands are not detailed enough or too childish (or I just want jointed hands), theyโ€™re getting swapped out. Finding pieces with joints that match up across companies can be tricky though!

    4. As others have said, I've switched out hands and feet on dolls lots of times.

I've also switched out a whole torso on a doll before (so legs and arms were another company from the torso).

That was actually hilarious. I mean the hybrid itself worked just fine but...years later, when I went to put the original torso back with the arms and legs...I couldn't remember where I had put it! :doh

    5. I feel your pain. Came across sr Delf feet in the spare parts box. And realized that doll was given away with other feet (& I'd swapped her hands also !) Which may someday be a research project for a doll historian trying to identify the doll... Oops!

    6. Hands definitely, I feel like cthulhu there. And more recently, feet. My older NS Zenith girl has 8 cm. boats for feet and I have always hated them. I switched a couple of times with white older Super Gem feet when she needed heels, so I went ahead and ordered her Soom feet. Only they are the newer ones and the ankle balls are bigger. But I'm just going to live with that-she didn't stand well anyway and at least she can sit in cute shoes now!

    7. @cthulhu
Oh no, haha. Mysteries for the future!

I had cleaned up my whole doll area in a flurry while I was pregnant and after all that and new mom brain I just could not remember the "very good, obvious" place I had stashed it.
I did eventually find it, but it took a while. It...also happened to be in the first place I looked? But somehow didn't find it when I looked...the first time...?:?

So yeah, the unexpected adventures of hybriding.

    9. My DIM Honey line Alana has Xaga Doll hands currently and they fit well, though they are currently pinker than her as she's 8 and I just got them last year. The Xaga Doll Ken that I have who's nearly as old as her is a very similar color to her, so I'm sure the hands will eventually mellow to match her. The Dollmore Kidult hands that were the first alternatives I got for her are paler than her and are sitting in a box with her paddle-like defaults.

I've seen plenty of more exciting hybrids than alternate hands. but that's the only one I own.

    10. My Frankie has a Unoa Lusis faceplate, a headback made by someone whose name I forget (it was over ten years ago), and a Unoa flat-chest upper torso. Her lower torso and arms are Kid Delf girl and legs are Kid Delf boy.

    11. Not yet! Been trying to find a good size and style match for hands for a couple of my doll crew. I have a set I'm thinking about using with my Illusion Spirit Yingye but still need to to see how well the joints would work. Head swaps can hide a lot of color difference with a faceup and the neck joint is hidden pretty well most of the time. Body joints tend to be more visible and the friction gradually removes color that isn't dyed into the resin.
I don't have multiple dolls unstrung at the same time very often so it's kind of hard to check for fit. It's probably easier to go to a dealer's webpage and look up a lot of dolls/bodies in the size range you are interested in and write a bunch of measurements down to compare. That's what I ended up doing to find a body for my very first hybrid. Good luck!

    12. Thanks, everybody, for your responses! I did find an earlier (if short lived) thread.

    13. A lot of my dolls have different company hands. Either to give them jointed hands or because their own just weren't as nice. Ex: My Mirodoll 60cm guy has modified wrists to take Luts SDF hands because his were awful and huge and had oval wrists. I'm also open to swapping out feet just so certain dolls can wear shoes- and in that case they don't even need to resin match, their own feet are just a tough size so hey, boots and more commonly sized feet is the solution.

    15. I have a Luts event head on a Doll Family Body with Volks hands. He's the most franken of my Frankendollies.

    16. My most complicated patchwork of a hybrid doll is an Elfdoll Rita head on a Mirodoll 60cm girl body. The legs are replaced with a pair of Angell-Studio heel legs, and her hands are Iplehouse nYID hands. So she's parts from 4 different companies. I had to do a lot of modding to make the thigh balls on the AS legs fit into the hip sockets on the Mirodoll torso, and her wrist sockets had to be boiled and re-shaped to work with the Iple hands.

I also have a Granado Boyd head on a Mirodoll 66cm boy body with Iplehouse SID hands and...I think his feet are Mystic Kids? Mirodoll hands look like mittens, and for some reason the feet on his body were comically small, so much so that they looked silly and couldn't fill any 1:3 boy shoes. So hands and feet had to be swapped.

I also replaced the hands on my Angel of Dream Yuki and my Impldoll Azalea/Doll Family-A hybrid--- they both got different versions of the Doll Family H hands. And my Supia Muriel/5Stardoll hybrid has Soom hands.

Everybody else is just a 2-part head/body hybrid at the moment, though I do have at least 2 others I'd definitely consider replacing hands on! Out of the 14 dolls I currently own, only 3 of them are all one company/all original parts/not hybrided in any way. I definitely tend to approach doll collecting as more of as assembly process than "buying a whole doll" :sweat

    17. I think my most cobbled together doll is Ryanne:
      - Iplehouse EID head and most of the body
      - Soom Chalco hooves
      - left arm is Impldoll Idol

It's a similar combination for Cosmos:
      - Bonelace Janus head
      - Doll-Family H body
      - Granado arms

The rest of my dolls are usually just the head/body hybrids that are common.
I personally actually prefer non-hybrid dolls (just get sick of matching skintones, it's so hard with brown skin tones since the variety is waaay greater than with white skin tones), so for me two have a three company one is rare. But some characters are just too unusual to work without these combinations :sweat

    18. What inspired you to switch only one arm? :XD:

    19. Heads/bodies are most common for me, followed by hands and feet. I usually do hands (not jointed) because the hands that come with a lot of the boys are too slim/delicate/feminine for my liking, so I find something more masculine. For feet, it's usually for high heel feet when the doll's company doesn't offer them, although it could be also when the doll has unusually large or small feet that make finding shoes difficult, so I swap them for some that are a more standard size.

Other than that, I think the only other unusual hybrid I've done was when I put a Ringdoll mechanical arm on a Dollzone Hid. It...did not fit well at all.
