I take issue with the term 'Random Eye Color'! Do you?

Jan 8, 2012

    1. I forget now which doll it was ( /think/ it was one of the Luts freebie heads?), but one of my dolls came with a truly random pair of glass eyes. One was brown with a little yellow in it, and one was yellow with a little blue in it. At least they were the same size!

I tossed them aside at first. They sat in a box for ages, until I NEEEEEDed that size and didn't have any others, I popped the eyes in an Ido head (so that he wouldn't be eyeless), and the look is actually rather cute. :)

As for the original topic, NO. I am not bothered that the RANDOM eyes or wig are, in fact, random. I have a small box full of really ugly random wigs and acrylic eyes. I appreciate the company sending them, because it meant that my doll wasn't eyeless and bald while I was waiting for or deciding on the right eyes and wig.

    2. I dont mind the random eyes - like you said they are only a few dollars and I will most likely want to change colors so as I look at it = the random eyes are just an extra pair for me.

    3. I actually take more issue with people saying that random eyes are free. If they are listed as what comes with the doll, then they are not free. Thus i agree that you should have some say in what color comes with your doll. If a company states that they are including FREE random eyes....then yes, they are free, and u shouldnt complain. I dunno, i guess its all in how its worded

    4. Essentially they are free though.

Think of it this way: when you buy a non-fullset doll from almost any company I've heard of, you're paying for a BLANK doll with no extras. Adding a face-up costs money (again, this is not including full set dolls). Getting a wig costs money. Extra feet & hand parts costs extra money.

Based on this, we can discern that when a company includes random eyes, they are a courtesy gift, a "free sample" so-to-speak.

I'm pretty sure that if you were to send the company an email saying that you do not want the eyes that come with the doll you are ordering and for them to take the eyes out of the order, the company is not going to shave $6 (or whatever their price of eyes is) off your doll's total cost. There's no way to do that, as the price of the doll is what it says the price of the doll is and that has nothing to do with the random eyes they give you (the buyer) as a courtesy. I doubt even Soom (the only company I know of from personal experience that gives decent quality $28 eyes with their basic dolls; that, according to someone here, does actually include the price of those eyes in the price of the dolls) would reduce your order cost by $28 if you asked them not to include the eyes (they do, however, honor specific eye color/type requests to the best of their ability, as has been my personal experience).

I'd also like to point out that with Soom's fullsets, you DO pay extra for the fullset LE eyes. It's an option in a drop down menu, along with the fullset wig, the fullset outfit, the fullset shoes, the fullset face-up, the fullset body blushing, and sometimes even other options. If you don't pay for the specific fullset eyes, you don't get any eyes with your doll.

As for the entitlement attitude... you, as a buyer/customer, ARE entitled to certian things. These things include: you are entitled to receive the product you ordered, in a reasonable timeframe, in the condition it is advertized as being in, with the items it is advertized as including (note that this includes those random eyes listed on the order page). You are entitled to decent customer service and that's it. Nothing more, nothing less.

If you're willing to drop hundreds of dollars on a doll that is essentially a hunk of plastic (yes, a doll is a hunk of plastic, even while it is a work of art and worth every penny as long as someone is willing to pay for it), then I fail to see how it's such a tragedy that the free (yes, free, or "included as a gift" if you prefer) eyes the company gives you, as a courtesy, are random. Drop the extra $6 (or $10, or $20, or $30, etc.) for the eyes you want. If you order a face-up, you're already paying for something extra, so it's not that big of a deal. If you bought your doll blank (no face-up), then you're going to have to pay extra for either face-up supplies or a commission (which often can cost a lot more than the company face-up costs). You're also going to be paying extra for clothes, a wig, shoes, and maybe other parts.

This hobby is ALL about customization. It's about starting with a blank (or semi-blank) canvas of a doll and making that doll your OWN. It's a hobby that results in a lot of money spent on a lot of different things, and many of those things will not come from the company where you originally bought your doll. So get over it! The sooner you do, the sooner you'll enjoy this hobby even more! ;)

      ...

Well, that turned out A LOT longer than I originally intended (especially considering I wasn't really planning on responding to this thread at all), but oh well! I wanted to say it and I did. :)

And now, for CAKE! :smallcake Cake makes everything better! :) And so do kittens! :kitty2

    5. But the very definition of the word random means you don't get to choose. Whether it's free or not is a different matter, but 'random eyes' does not equal 'I get to choose which colour eyes'.

Otherwise, the 'random' numbers of the lottery will the same every single time and the winner would be the same person every single time too ;)

    6. We got 2 dolls new and a floating head as a bonus gift for Christmas. My hubby's doll he got on ebay. Out of purely wanting to make a happy customer, the seller sent him a free pair of eyes of his choice (when he requested a specific color, as the company would not do this) so when he got the doll he had the random acrylic eyes and the free acrylic eyes he chose.

When I got my doll, I knew the eyes are supposed to be random but I am such a picky person that I did write to ask for a specific color of glass eyes they had on their site. They obliged providing that they had the color in stock. I also got a free pair of acrylic eyes for the gift head (which was a nice surprise, since the head itself was free)

I would say I'm in between. Considering our dolls were on the cheaper side (1/3 but mine was less than 300 with custom face up and shipping, and my hubbies was just a bit more) I wouldn't ''expect'' them to give me my choice of eye color as it is normally stated ''free random color of eyes''. If I were to spend 1000 on a doll, however... out of pure good customer service I would expect them to accommodate a small request like eye color. If they don't have that eye color in stock, I would want them to at least give me options I could choose from.

    7. I know it is easy to buy the eyes you want and use them but I think it is wrong to specify random eye colour. As a point of principle you should get the ones you want. We pay enough!!

    8. I think that you should be able to give your preferred colour/style but I understand that companies may not be able to fulfil everyone's requests.

    9. I've seen companies that offer eyes and/or wigs as an option that you must pay for ($50-60 together), and yet they're supposedly random. Personally I wouldn't pay this much for a wig and pair of eyes of unknown color and style, even if I'm certain that they're of good quality. In some cases these doll companies sell eyes and wigs separately, at the same price as the extra option with the doll, and I might as well go to their eyes and wigs section, and specifically pick the one that I want and add it to my doll order.

It's not something I understand, but I don't pay for random eyes and wigs (not for $50), and I have preferred brands for eyes so I don't keep most free eyes that sometimes come with dolls ( some dolls don't even come with free eyes at all).

I do have greater appreciation and fondness for companies/sellers that try to accommodate customers' requests, though. It usually means better customer service and communications.

    10. Not every eye is in stock at every time. Yes, sometimes it's disappointing when a doll arrives with eyes that don't fit their character and it looks wrong-- with one of my boys, I knew I didn't want him to sit around with the wrong eyes if he didn't come with the right colour and I bought his eyes ahead of time, with my others I let them come as they were-- one is still waiting for eyes that look right, but the other came with the most gorgeous eyes in the right colour!

Like others have said, some companies do let you make a request, and they try to fill it if they can, and it is nice that they go above and beyond like that. But I don't feel like it's something that every company MUST do-- getting the right eyes in stock could take a lot of time, and in the end, I'd rather have my doll arrive faster with a pair of temporary eyes than wait an extra however-long for the doll maker to get the right eyes in stock.

(and like others have said, $6 glass eyes? That is a world I'd love to live in... I'm just happy when a company provides glass eyes, period! I can always trade them with someone or put them on the marketplace if they're wrong, and glass eyes are worth a fair bit!)

      =^__^=

    11. Doesn't bother me, but mostly that's because the eyes that come with the dolls are acrylic and I think that acrylic eyes look like crap. I'd want to go and shell out for fancy urethane or pretty glass eyes anyway, so why quibble about the crappy acrylics that I'm not even going to want to use?

And I don't expect them to include expensive eyes for free. We're paying for the doll, not for the eyes.

    12. I like the surprise of random eyes actually and the thought of this bothering someone never occurred to me because they are given away free and some companies don't give anything besides the sculpt.

Sure, if I don't like the eyes they will be basically useless to me but I like the idea of seeing eyes on your doll you may not have considered otherwise. Plus you can always trade them or use them on another doll. =)

I've already bought extra eyes for my doll anyway because I know the EXACT color I want and the company doesn't even make those.

    13. I figure if you get a free pair of eyes, wig, whatever it may be, it's better just to be happy you got something extra for free than whine about it not suiting your tastes. Usually, you'd have an image for what you want your doll to be, and would just purchase what you want on the side anyway. ^^ ; It won't kill you to just buy another pair of eyes; just think of it as something free on the side ^^ ((I was just lucky that random eyes I got were the color I wanted and were glassso I didn't need to purchase another pair*laughs*))

    14. Nope, not at all. Switching out eyes is a relative simple thing to do, and if you want to get better eyes you can. Plus, I like figuring out which eyes I like best anyway.
In the case of Iplehouse, I get the eyes that come with the faceup I pick, so that works out pretty well so far......not that I had an option. Volks is the same, what you see is what you get. Souldoll will give you the eyes you see if you get the faceup with the doll.

Now, I expect my Dollshe boys will have random eyes, as I ordered no faceup. But, I have some Genarolo eyes that will be great if the color I get is bogus. :)

    15. Personally, I love the concept of random eyes. I look at it as a free gift thrown in because we are paying so much. I got free random eyes with my doll, and while I hoped they'd be what I wanted (a nice dark green), I was really anticipating the surprise from not knowing. Even though the eyes weren't the color I'd hoped for they inspired me to make a second character, so that was a nice bonus. I view it as being a free pair of eyes, and even if it's not remotely like what I want, well, I'm not out any money because of it.

    16. I thought 'random eyes' were free with the doll! o.o

I wouldn't want to pay for something I don't get to pick, either. But whenever I've ordered a doll and cared about the eye color, I've asked the company for the ones I want, and they've always accomodated. It's worth a shot.

    17. Usually you can request a specific color for your random free eyes and the company will do it. That being said, freebie eyes that are included with a doll are almost always cheap and crappy so who cares?

    18. I will probably sound like a brat in saying this, but I'd just prefer to have the option to not have eyes sent with the doll, thereby saving the company the waste of sending me acrylics I don't want (which they can instead give to people who would like them), and saving me the time of trying to get rid of them after the fact (when I have a limited amount of hobby time anyway). I know many people like to have the eyes come with their dolls, but I don't find it necessary.

    19. This.

I agree that not all eyes are "free", and that the fact that they may just be all of $6 does not mean I should consider them "free". You ARE paying hundreds of dollars for this doll, sometimes with the eyes INCLUDED in the price!

Now, do I think I should demand they supply me with the specific color I'd like? Well, I think it certainly doesn't hurt to ask, and if they can do so, then awesome. If not, well, it's nothing I'm going to be sending the doll back over. It's not a "deal-breaker".

I will say that, while it's exciting to get random eyes, it can also be a bit disappointing. With my DoC H. Kirill, I requested I get blue eyes. I got green instead, and yeah I was a bit disappointed with it. But, when I payed for the doll, I understood I would be receiving "random eyes", and therefore, I am NOT entitled to get whatever kind I like, REGARDLESS of the price I'm paying, because the second I payed I agreed to those terms. Would it be nice to choose? Of course. But it would also be nice to win the lottery, and have a great boyfriend, and eat delicious desert whenever I'd like too. World doesn't work that way.

    20. The eyes are freebie starters. I don't see any reason to be upset about what color freebie you get.

Even if it's not a listed option, you can always ask the company for a specific eye color as the defaults. I've done it on several occasions, and the many companies will work with you on it. Even if they won't, how likely would you be to keep the default eyes in the doll anyway? Unless it's a full set, I know I've usually got a pair already picked out before the doll even arrives!

Short answer is no, I don't mind. I enjoy the mystery.
