I take issue with the term 'Random Eye Color'! Do you?

Jan 8, 2012

    1. this and i found it to be a pleasant "whats in the box" moment. Its fun to see what color that I am going to get. Even if it turns out to be orange.

    2. Most companies (in my experience) have just given cheap acrylics as the random eyes, so I always intend to get new glass ones anyway, therefore this doesn't really affect me. That being said, it's still always fun to see what the company gives me even if I don't intend to keep them. With one doll I got awful orange eyes that I took out as soon as I could, while with another I got really beautiful blue acrylics that I almost considered leaving in. Beggars can't be choosers, so it's not really fair to complain about eyes you're getting for free. If the company offered a free face up, but only gave one option for it would you complain? I'm guessing not, if you didn't like what they gave you for free you'd pay for a different one. Same goes for eyes.

    3. I sort like the random part of it. It is like a box of chocolates and all ^w^

I am sure it has been stated before, but personally, if I received eyes I had no use for (wrong color, not my thing, etc.) I would simply sell or trade them for something I did want. That way, I am not out anything.

    4. ^everyone need to read this!

people need to quit bitching. they do say the eyes are random, and considering what they are worth, yes they are pretty much a freebie. they probably send the eyes according to their stock... so if they do not send you the brown eyes you asked for, it's probably because they don't have it! >.<

    5. Some company give eyes color which you want,if you mention that. When i order new doll form 3 different company they send to default eye which i wanted color.

    6. A tad random, but when I ordered my Delf El, I requested a color. I did not receive that color, but the ones that he came with were so beautiful, I didn't end up buying the ones I originally had planned! I guess I still prefer the option to choose, but random can be fun by exposing you to options you wouldn't have thought of yourself!

    7. i am more upset that i was not able to pick the color of my own eyes, and those definitely came free with purchase.

    8. I don't see any reason to complain about filler eyes that are thrown in. Many doll companies do not include eyes with basic dolls-- it's not a right for you to even get eyes you are not paying for, which can be worth between 6-100 dollars depending on the type of eye you're putting into the doll.

To me I feel like free eyes are just that... something thrown in for free and extra, and a nice surprise They make the doll look more lifelike or at least less strange on arrival, and that's pretty nice. If a doll company chose to, without charging you, include a free robe and wig with your doll, simply so that they'd be 'decent', would you complain you weren't allowed to choose the color of the wig and robe? I would not-- it's extra past what you pay for, and it's a privilege, not a right.

    9. Why bother getting upset about it? The company may not even have the eyes I want anyway. Frankly, I've got other things to worry about then a pair of eyes I probably won't use.

    10. Eh. I don't really see anything wrong with it. Random eyes are just tossed in to give the doll eyes.
The company you're buying from might not even make the perfect eyes for your character, you're usually going to have to buy eyes else where. It would be nice to pick eyes, and I've heard of some companies allowing you to... But generally, it's just more of a freebie thing. :)
Makes your doll a bit more human coming out of the box.

Plus you can just sell freebie eyes if you're not gonna use them, so it's all fine. :3

    11. On one side, I can see what you are saying, if you have a specific character in mind, it would be nice to have a color option for your doll's eyes, since eyes can mean a lot for a character.

On the other side, I just love the surprise element in not knowing what eye color it will be, since I always add to the character after I receive the doll, and the eyes help on that a lot.

(Also the car comment on firts page, dolls are not cars, and I don't think they can be used as examples for the same thing, since the feelings and motives when you buy a doll or a car is very different, sorry had to get that off my chest)

    12. Pfft. Not if you really really really like cars.

And I still think complaining about random eyecolor is asinine. If you don't like what you get for free, go buy what you want. Amen.

    13. I usually end up getting new eyes for my dolls anyway. I like the freebies included because I don't always have a bowl full of eyes to chose from when a new doll comes in. But I do keep the freebie eyes that I don't use, and sometimes will use them just to play around with a new doll to decide on what colour to order for them.

    14. It would be nice if all BJD retailers offered a choice of eye colors, but that is not the norm. Potentionally undesirable random eye color, like default clothing/wig items, doesn't deter me from purchasing a doll, because it's ultimately the doll I want the most. Upon purchasing the product (in this case, a doll), I agree to the terms, which includes anything described in the product description (like "random eye color").

If I dislike the random eye color I receive, I tend to hang onto them in case I buy a doll in the future that would be able to use them, or I give/sell/trade them away. Personally I like the surprise-element of getting a random eye color and I've actually purchased a bag of random eye colors because I like trying out colors I wouldn't normally go for.

And as so many have suggested, politely request for your preferred eye color if you're so concerned about it. Sounds like a lot of retailers are pretty accommodating about it.

    15. I've gotten several pairs of eyes with various dolls, and haven't used any of them. I was actually happy that my last fellow to arrive didn't come with eyes at all, since it honestly just feels like a waste to receive something that I'm not going to make use of.

For me personally, I don't think that any company "owes" me a pair of free eyes in my choice of color. I'm really particular about color/style anyway, and it's better for me to search and purchase something that suits my boys, rather than expect the company to just randomly get it right. It's...not going to happen.

    16. I like the idea of a surprise to it. I'm getting my Mei from Junkyspot and she'll come with Random eyes and I really hope she comes with the yellow ones because I like how it looks and fits with how I want her to look....But if not?

I'll probably buy a lot of eyes anyways and wigs too. I wanna get Kuroshitsuji style pentagram eyes for certain events...

But if it's free eyes anyways then you don't have to put it into your budget....See? You can spend the money on either another set of eyes, or put it towards a wig or fabric....It's kinda cool to see what might look good too.

    17. I don't mind receiving a random eye colour; I usually end up buying a different pair of eyes for my dolls anyway, instead of the free ones given by the company.

I find that a lot of companies are considerate and will include the colour of your choice (given that it's in stock) if you put it in the request/comment box at the end of your purchase.

Out of the dolls I've bought, two came with absolutely no eyes, one came with eyes in the default colour selected by the company, and the other came with "random" eyes but the company was kind enough to give me dark brown as I requested.

I don't think that companies are trying to restrict your colour choice - I think they're just afraid that if they promise you a certain colour and then don't have it, everyone will have to go through a lot of hassle to pick a different one or you'll end up unhappy with them!

    18. ^^This made me smile.

I think this is such a non-issue that it's blowing my mind. For the companies that actually offer the random eye that's included with the doll, it's right there in the statement and basically the terms you agree to when you press the 'Buy' button: it's random. Don't agree with it being random? Buy another doll from a different company that does let you choose exactly what you would like if a pair of random $6 eyes (that probably wouldn't even affect the cost of the doll even if it weren't given) bothers you that much. Take up a crusade with the company to change their terms, get the UN involved if possible. It's just as simple as that. There would be an issue if they GAVE you the choice of which eyes you got and then they told you "too bad, you're getting what we give you anyways". That would be something I would take issue with. But then I'd probably realize I have more important things to worry about and forget about it.

    19. Me too! We should be able to choose what eye color for the price we're paying!

    20. For a new doll it doesn't bother me whatsoever because I figure they are not going to be exactly what I would like and will be shelved the moment they arrive anyway. I'm usually ahead of the game and already have an order or an idea of what I would like to see on the sculpt when I buy. I feel 100% differently about private sales and I confess I find it annoying when people put up pictures of their BJD's with eyes that are not included in the sale. Let me make one caveat to that. If the eyes on the doll are available for additional purchase, I'm completely cool with that.
