1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

I take issue with the term 'Random Eye Color'! Do you?

Jan 8, 2012

    1. Considering that the eyes are essentially free, I am glad that companies offer them, even if they are random. They don't have to give us eyes at all, but the dolls look much nicer with eyes in (even without a faceup), and some may not have the money after buying the doll to get a pair of eyes they want.

We don't have a "right" to get the eyes we want with the doll we order unless we order specific eyes. To think so is selfish in my opinion. It's like getting a gift from someone, like a nice shirt or expensive dress and then complaining about the color and claiming that you should have right to choose what color dress you want someone to give you.

If anyone has a right in this equation, it's the companies who have a right to give us gift eyes or not when we order dolls. If you don't like it....deal. They are a gift of sorts and you should be thankful for it. I know I am.

And the whole price of the doll argument is ridiculous. I can use that same argument to say that if you have this much money to buy a doll, you are perfectly capable of saving just a bit extra to get a pair of eyes you want. These companies are small and have enough to see to without dealing with people who want specific colored free eyes who can't be grateful for the fact that they are getting the eyes in the first place.

    2. but are they? if a company offers eyes with their doll, they probably either a) factored the cost of the eyes into the cost of the doll itself or b) are making such a profit from their business that including eyes doesn't affect them. but if (b) were the case, then it would be more business savvy to let the customer choose the eye color. right now i feel like if they include random eye color they just use whatever they have in plentiful stock.

i have no issue buying eyes separately because i can afford it, but as someone new to the hobby i was also really surprised to learn that not all A-BJDs come with eyes by default (so as a result i ended up waiting 2 weeks before i could find eyes to fit my latest addition, when i could have just bought them at the same time i purchased her). i just assumed that the cost of a pair of eyes is added into the base price of a doll.

    3. I think the "Random" eyes are the company's free gift to you most of the time, so I do not mind the randomness of it. It is a fun surprise. Same with the wig if they offer a random one. I even had a company send me a free random pair of boots as a gift. It's like when I have a baby, I can't choose their sex, eye color or hair color (Unless I pay a fertility doctor major $$$ for a Designer Baby) Though BJDs are not alive, I kinda see it the same way.

    4. I kinda see the point in wanting a specific colour, so I am going to ask for a specific colour with my order, because as she will be my first doll, there's not much point in having a pair of wrong coloured eyes just lying around. It's nice they have free ones, and even if they can't give me the requested eyes, at least she will be able to see!

Also, I live in a place where there aren't a lot of BJD collectors, it's pretty much unheard of on our trading sites, so I am not sure I could sell or trade unwanted eyes within my own country. So there;s that, too.

Either way, they are free so I'm not complaining, and theres no harm in asking for the colour you want :)

    5. Keep in mind that most, not all but most, BJD companies are tiny and they order large batches of say, 10 green, 10 blue, 10 brown etc. eyes from eye ccompanies. Most people when allowed to request would choose blue or green and not brown or red. This would mean ordering more inventory of those. The reason that large companies like Walmart can have so many options for the consumer is because they are large enough and have enough funds to order inventory exactly when they need it and shipping costs are arranged because they do so much ordering. With any small business that is not possible which means it would be impossible for most bJD companies to have every type of eye that everyone wants in stock. That means you are either talking about longer wait times or higher prices. Everything is a give and take.

    6. I like the surprise that comes with "random eyes".

However my first doll was bought nearly a year ago and I had decided from the start that she was going to have brown eyes. Since Im unemployed and I had some trouble finding brown 10mm eyes I asked Fairyland if they could send my doll with brown eyes becouse I simply knew I couldnt afford to change her eyes in a while (and boy was I right, didnt get her new eyes until just few months ago! xD ). She had those acrylic brown eyes for a long time.

Now when my second doll is close to arriving Im excited, not only for the doll but to see what random color she got. I didnt recuest a color becouse I havent decided on what she's going to look like and if I happen to get an ugly color, I can just replace them with the brown ones in the meantime :3

Basicly what Im trying to say is that I like the randomness of random color. If it was important to me Id ask with the company but I feel like Im actually buying the doll, not the eyes in any way. I see eyes as a nice extra and as several have mentioned, it gives that chance to try an eyecolor you would have never thought about trying :)

    7. often when ordering supplies from asian countries it is fairly common to receive free candies, pins, or trinkets as a "thank you for ordering" gift. these are things i didn't ask for and don't necessarily want/need but seem to be a cultural thing to add. the stuff is usually inexpensive and probably bought in bulk. i would not expect to ask for anything specific for a "freebie" in such cases and it would probably be considered rude if i did. i see the random eyes that come with bjd's as being in the same category. if i want specific eyes i order them and pay for them just like i pay for any extras like tan skin, faceups or clothing. that's just how bjd's work. they are bald, nude, faceless dolls and you pay for any additions, personally that's what i love about them!

    8. Auntbear: I've noticed this too, when I order clothes or make up from Korea I end up with loads of socks that are too small for me and whitening cream samples that I really don't need. But of course it doesn't offend me, I still appreciate the gesture, as I do when I receive a pair of ugly acrylic eyeswith my high quality doll :p

    9. 2 people are sitting on an airplane.

      A stranger walks up and hands 1 passanger $1000 & the 2nd passanger $2000.

The 1st passanger says..."why does he get $2000"?

    10. I think you have a point. After paying so much and waiting so long, you should at least be able to get the eyes from the stock photo that attracted you in the first place.

    11. Yeah I think we should be able to pick to be honest. 4 of my dolls have their default eyes, you can request a certain color, 40% of the time they give you what you asked for.

    12. I buy from DOD, and truthfully I don't like how fake their acrylic eyes are our how obvious the color "variations" are. I just turn around and buy glass eyes from DOA, Ebay, or other. I love my company, I really do, but the eyes they have for the dolls suck. Sorry DOD, just my 2 cents. So in summation, it wouldn't matter if they sent me an eye cookie I liked, I would pop them out, and put in better ones.

    13. I like to have random eyes for my doll because i can see those size. If i dont like those, so what? Then i just buy smaller :). Same thing with colour. Its nice to try green eyes if my opinion is red suits better. Maybe i like those greens, that never know.

    14. It is a bit frustrating... And it makes it hard to know weather or not to buy eyes separately or not! When I got my girl Alice (KD Aru) I knew the eye color I needed for her character, but I didn't know weather to order eyes when I ordered her to save on shipping or cross my fingers and hope. But I did request pink eyes and thankfully Luts did send them! I was very happy, even if it was a different shade than I was going to buy, I didn't complain because they were still pink like I wanted!

    15. well, i used to like the random eyes till my LTF came with blood red eyes. I would have liked a choice of realistic/ supernatural eyes.

The last three pairs of random eyes i got:
      Blue with yellow sclerae
      Odd greenish/yellow with yellow pupil
      Pink with milky pink pupil

Since non of my dolls is going to have severe hepatitis, is going to be a woodland creature or... well what ever has pink eyes, i wasnt pleased with either of them.

    16. You are always free to trade/sell/trash them if you'd like.

What people don't realize that you can send a request to the company that you don't want the random eyes. Heck, it would even save shipping prep time/stress on the doll company if you do.

    17. I was nervous when my girl had been shipped, the whole random colour eyes notion freaked me out. I didn't want to end up with a YO doll with bright red eyes, which I have seen and heard has happened. Fortunately she came with deep emerald green eyes. However no thinking about random eye colours I think it's fun, it's like a treasure hunt you don't know what you're going to get. Can't wait to see the eyes on my Minifee. :)

    18. I was able to choose specific eyes from both HZ and Angel of Dream. The only doll that came with random eyes was my 5star "Tumnus." I requested blue in the "other" section and they gave me green! It is rather ridiculous if you think about it.

    19. Eh, it isn't really, it's called random for a reason. As you've experienced companies will attempt to honor your requests when they can but it's not always possible... unless you want to hang around while they wait for a specific colour to come in before they can ship your order? If you really want a specific colour your best bet is to simply buy a pair of eyes in that colour so you know for sure. The majority of the time the eyes you'll get free with a doll are $5 acrylics anyway, it's no great loss to replace them.

I got six pairs of free eyes that I chose specifically from HZ, that is a gift. Eyes are essential for dolls so it should be a given that you choose the color you want unless such eyes aren't in stock.
