1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

I take issue with the term 'Random Eye Color'! Do you?

Jan 8, 2012

    1. I thought the term "random eyes" strange when I first got into bjd's. Now I'm used to it. One thing that's a plus is that you get an eye color that you might not normally pick. Sometimes it's quite nice- or not! :D

    2. I'm undecided …

Companies' free eyes are mostly acrylics which I would hardly be using anyway. But it's nice to have them because I'm not keeping a huge eye collection to try on my new dolls, and sometimes a character seems some time to develop. I might want to change the color of the eyes and hair a few times during the progress, and it's nice when meanwhile my doll has eyes at all. However, what bugs me is that some companies send you free eyes in ridiculous colors and the wrong size, too. I once got 18mm pink acrylics with a 73 cm boy who needed 12-14mm eyes. I have a collection of cheap 18 mm eyes which I never use and which nobody would buy. Waste of material …

I won't buy the "poor company, didn't have the right size and color in stock"-thing - especially not for the bigger companies. They can foresee how much they are selling each month and could well keep enough acrylic eyes in stock - at least in the right size. It's probably just too much of a bother for them to get all those different wishes from their customers.
However, there are companies who at least let you ask for a certain eye color and will grant your wish if possible.

Sometimes it inspires me if I get something I haven't considered for my character. One of my dolls came with black glass eyes. Not what I had in mind at all, but they look great for my character, after all. So, if all the "free eyes" were glass eyes or other high quality eyes: Give me any color! ;)

    3. Really not that big a deal. If I want a particular eye color for a doll, I just put in the notes section on the order sheet that I'd please like this particular color eye. So far, no company that I've requested this from has had a problem with providing me the right color. Just ask next time you order. The worse they can do is say no, but really, why would they?

    4. I guess I just think it's nice they offer free eyes at all when they don't have to? It doesn't bother me. It would be nice if there was a menu to choose from but since they don't have to give eyes and it's mostly just a free gift, I am ok that they give what they have.

    5. It's hard to understand this concept... Companies will make or buy eyes anyway, so why do they put any eyes, without being sure of their colors ? I'm lost with this ...

    6. I don't mind random eyes, I'll immediately swap them for more expensive ones anyway. I think it's nice to get a free pair of eyes with the doll at all!

    7. I don't mind random eyes because half the places I order and want to order from don't even give free eyes, and since they are generally acrylics and often companies don't sell eyes that I like anyway, I just order glass eyes from elsewhere.

    8. Actually, when i bought my first doll i was able to request the eyes but chose not to since i had a pair for her already, most of my other dolls are previously owned, and my new ones i always have spare eyes, their "random colors get traded to someone they work for

    9. I really like that actually, kind of like... a little something specific to the doll that isn't your decision, but more the way they were 'born', sort of. Just a fun little thing, to me. It's not like they are permanent or anything, so it's not much to worry about anyway.

    10. Free is free right? ^^ Usually I enjoy getting random eyes. Mostly when I buy a doll, I have a look in mind for them and when I get their eyes and put them in, it completely changes my thoughts and gives me a new opinion. It can even change my mind of what I previously threw right out the window! The same with wigs

    11. It doesn't bother me, if the doll comes with free eyes, it saves me money spending on eyes for the doll, however it depends on the color, if it isn't what I want I will buy another pair and put away the ones I don't want XD

    12. I don't think you should complain when you get something free.

    13. My Hound was second hand, so I knew what he was coming with beforehand. My sister's Puki Puki Sugar came with absolutely stunning purple eyes, which were "random," and she has no intention of buying her new eyes unless something happens to these. I don't think I'll mind whatever comes with my DC Agatha, since I'll just be happy at all to have eyes for her. I know I'll most likely buy her new ones that fit her character (like I did with my Hound), but it's just nice to get eyes at all.

    14. I don't really care though I think it might be a logistical nightmare for the companies to let everyone choose their eye color. Besides, generally the first thing that I do is change out the eyes anyway. I'm usually not pleased with the quality & lack of detail with default eyes. I like eyes like Eyeco, Masterpiece & Safrin with have more iris detail & therefor look more real. I just sell my default eyes even though I have to spend extra $$ to get just what I want.

    15. Word.

Freebies are just nice little extras, and should be treated like any other small gift, in my opinion. If you like them and want to use them, great. If not, there may be someone else in your local group who could use them. Or you could always trade them, or sell them or just give them to someone here. It's fine to request a specific color from a company that offers free eyes, but getting upset over what they send you is just silly.

The thing is, when it comes to outfitting a new doll, buying a decent pair of eyes in the color you want is probably the single LEAST expensive part of the process... Unless you have your heart set on Silvers or older Zouks or some other very high-end, hard-to-get brand, it's not hard to find exactly what you have in mind. Absolute worst case? You have to deal with your doll having eyes the wrong color while you save up or wait for the right ones to be shipped... That's not the end of the world.

    16. I agree with most. I do not care about the eyes. They are considered free if i didn't have to pay for them. Some companies don't even give you free eyes. Instead they offer them as an added option that you need to pay for. I usually pass.

    17. Really? I've never heard of that before. Usually, when I see a company that offers eyes as an added option, these eyes are still free, but you're able to choose the colour you like.

    18. I think it all depends on the company. Some company have access to cheap sources so they can give you whatever you want or close to whatever you want. However, some companies carry really expensive accessories like Dollshe's $50 glass eyes or, Iplehouse's nice wigs, so most of the time they don't even offer it to you.
If that's a big problem, just pick a company that lets you chose. From the top of my head, Souldoll lets you choose eyes but not wigs and both are free. Migidoll will allow you to request a certain color for eyes and wigs if they have them in stock.
So buy at your own discretion.

    19. I don't really mind ^^, it's easy enough to buy new ones that I really like anyway :). I have expensive taste generally so I would probably want to change them even if they came in a colour close to what I had in mind.

    20. A few of the Soom iMda 3.0 dolls i brought does not come with eyes. They are an option that cost anywhere from $27-$30. So i always pass.
