if dolls were less expensive...

Jul 23, 2015

    1. If my OT 1/6 dolls are an indication. There's a population limit after a few got culled (15-18 now Obitsu and action figures mixture).
I would have to stick to specific characters or risk another population explosion since there's quite a number of sculpts out there that i'm fond of and most of them are either men in the 65-70cm range or a herd of varying 1/6 anthros. I'm rather limited where space in concern.

    2. I have a feeling it would be similar... like, instead of thinking "$300 is so expensive for a doll" I would just think "$20 is so expensive for a doll" But I would obviously be able to afford more clothes.

    3. Tbh if they were cheaper I feel like it would be a passing trend as I could buy alot have fun move onto the next thing, the fact that they are expensive makes me cherish my doll and take more interest in it (expanding my hobbies to create things for them). Though I wouldn't mind cheaper clothes as most their clothes are more expensive than my own

    4. While it would be nice to collect something that didn't cost hundreds of dollars, if these dolls were cheap, their construction would probably be cheap too. Then I wouldn't want them at all. It just seems that everything I've collected through out my life has been pricey. Not because I only want expensive things that I really can't afford but simply because I can walk into a room & the object I love turns out to be the most expensive.:kitty1 It's frustrating!

    5. For me, I'm here because bjd's are highly customizable. I think if they were less expensive, I'd have all the ones I really want and would be able to spend more on getting nicer eyes and clothes for them. I'm nearing the point where I'll be 'done', the point where I'll have all of my important characters shelled, but I do expect I'll be tempted to get new sculpts. I was like that with Barbies too. I got a whole bunch of different ones in a relatively short amount of time, and now I still get one every couple of years. I think it would be that way with bjd's if they were less expensive, except I would still cherish them more than my Barbies as they shell my OC's. It comes back to the customization.

    6. If they where cheap I would be able to have more I think. My girls would have a boyfriend each :kitty2And their price is the reason I do not take my msds outside very often - I am too afraid they could break. And I would have way more accessories. Aaah so many options...

    7. I would have so many more dolls it would be wonderful.

    8. I think the size of my collection would mostly stay the same - four or five dolls is more than enough for me. It would just be a lot easier and take less time to acquire the ones I want.

    9. ahhh ahhhh~

I don't think it'll change my doll plans haha
I am happy with an SD, an MSD, and a custom size bjd.
If they had the same price range as barbies, then I'd buy tons of accessories LOL

    10. If BJD's were less expensive! I'd probably would have about ten of them by now! I only have 2 BJD's and a floating head. I plan to buy more later and most of them are 1/3 SD's! It's kind of a good thing that they are expensive because I would have no room for 60+cm dolls!

    11. Oh god. I would be knee deep in dolls. I'm not really bothered about their value/exclusivity/rarity - I just love them as objects. I have non-BJD dolls in my collection that are a lot cheaper and I love those too. So if I could get pretty, jointed resin for less money, I'd be in heaven and my family would probably move out.

    12. Maybe the hobby were most popular then and we would see our dolls everywhere and maybe we wouldn't think our dolls are as special as we think they are now

    13. If the quality dose not change, then I guess I would buy a few more. Actually some dolls' original price is not very high, but due to their poor little quantity, the second hand price gets incredibly high, which I cannot afford.:pout:

    14. I think if they were that cheap I would have lost interest ages ago. If my neglected Monster High dolls are any indication. The only one of them I still care about is the one I spent a long time trying to find. The ones I found easily have been packed away.

Having to save up and plan means I have to be really sure about a doll before I buy it, but if I could walk into the store and pick one up off the shelf I might just take them home on impulse and end up not caring for it after a few days.

    15. If that happened I would def have more than the one I have now if the quality was the same xD but I agree tho maybe it wouldnt be as special? I take extra special care in picking a doll and giving them personality and especially their face up makes them unique. Just like with my barbies in the past they'll end up in a box in an attic >.< if I collected too many ahh so sad!

    16. I’d be drowning in dolls. Neck deep in dolls. In doll heaven.... tbh I’m glad sort of glad they’re not that cheap lol. As fun as it would be to have so many dolls I’m sure I’d run out of space and ultimately feel overwhelmed.

I think the biggest upside to cheaper dolls would be a lower barrier of entry for newcomers. I’m a sap and I just want people to get what they want haha...

    17. affordable bjd's like barbie .... considering that I have 700 fashion dolls barbie/monster high/rainbow high/bratz etc .... aaah yes it would be like an episode of HOARDERS not good ... not good.... but I would looooove it!!!!!

    18. I'd get really good at Tetris with how little space there'd be left

    19. I think I'd end up with a slightly bigger collection as I'd be less reserved about dropping the money for one, but mainly I'd buy a bunch of clothes, wigs and eyes so that I could change them up regularly If the dolls themselves were more affordable, I'd just put the money towards other things for them.

    20. If you look back to webpages about SD made early 2000s, you'll see this already did happen. When it was extremely costly and difficult to get a BJD, 5 seemed to be around the maximum number of dolls anyone would own. You'll also see a lot more love was put into each of these few dolls.

They got more accessible over the next 10 years and more than a few companies appeared and offered them at many different price points. Owning 20 dolls was surprising at the time, but not super rare. Most of my friends had under 10 dolls. 10+ years later (now), 20 is common and 50+ is not unheard of. There's even a few people with over 100.

I couldn't even remember all of their names if I had 30+. I'm trying to live as if I'm still in earlier days by keeping my purchases to a minimum. Of course, I've already doubled the early maximum but I want to be in love with all my dolls. It's so tempting to just buy all of them once it becomes easy.
