1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

if dolls were less expensive...

Jul 23, 2015

    1. Agree with you , i know we're buying art but i can't help but think smaller size dolls should be cheaper cause they used less resin :P lol , just my opinion though :) Respect to artist :)

    2. They would take over my life entirely if they were inexpensive! They only monopolize my life now.

    3. I personally own 5 American girls and a ton of barbie like dolls in addition to getting my first BJD soon. So I think I'd have a wild population. When my kids are older I plan to do wild holiday displays with ALL my dolls. BJD ones away from windows and tiny hands.

      • x 1
    4. I'd like them the same but I'd definitely want to buy more if they were cheaper!

    5. If BJDs were cheaper, I'd have way more fantasy dolls. I mostly buy humans because I don't play and photoshoot fantasy dolls as much for some reason. Like I've tried, but I don't even know why that is.

It's why I also collect Monster High Dolls. I just love all these fantasy concepts and it's easier on the wallet and I don't go "I spent $500 and I'm not even gonna use it for anything"

    6. I'd say that I would have tons of dolls if they were cheaper. However, it's true that knowing that you can't have them right away make you want them even more. In my opinion, It's not just the money, but the hard work, what make people consider things more valuable. For example, in a poor country/community, an expensive dress is like a dream, but for people who can afford many of those dresses, they probably get tired of them or don't appreciate the value of the same item the same way. What I mean is, the value is not only about the materials dolls are made, but about the hard work and the waiting.

There would be more people buying dolls, for sure, but I don't think the level of interest would be the same.
If they were cheaper, I believe companies would have other strategies to keep people interested, like making almost every doll limited, or opening pre-order dates just a few days/year, or something like that. That would be done to maintain the "I can't have a doll whenever I want" feeling on people. That would be a very clever way to keep costumers interested and watchful.
What do you think? Does it make any sense? lol

    7. I feel the quality would be lost. If they were as cheap as barbies, I would assume the quality would be like that. I guess I also like having the idea I'm helping support artists too?

    8. You get what you pay for, and there is a range of quality of that in bjd now. They would be made of cheaper materials with little or no variation of size, sculpt or features, the very thing that makes them desirable.

For many if not most of us, the price alone creates a discerning development of taste, as we must pick and choose. There is the pleasure of the search, the anticipation when waiting, the box opening. Otherwise, just a clutter of beanie babies.

    9. There are people who still have 50+ bjd and people who don't buy more than decided quality because of the place and lack of attention they can give to it. I think there are still many people who wouldn't have too many of them if they were more affordable.

As for me, i'm sure i wouldn't have really much because there are not many molds i really love and want to have. btw i think i would buy some girls if the cost would be affordable) i like some of them, just not that much as to pay the price i'm ready to pay for a boy

    10. If they were cheaper (provided they were still in good quality) I would definitely not second-guess buying some. Right now—of course, I am super poor!—it will be a while before I can get even just one :pout:

    11. I feel like it's the rarity and the fact that I have to wait that makes them more interesting and desirable to me. I never collected dolls growing up and only have a handful of anime/game figurines and stuff that are of my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE characters. So quite frankly, if the dolls were drastically cheaper (say, less than $100 each) I probably wouldn't be interested at all. Plus, I'd worry about the quality at that price. The dolls are expensive not only because of the materials used, but because of the artistry that goes into each one—the design, the crafting, the makeup and clothes... Each person involved in that process deserves to be paid fairly and I just don't see how that can be done if the dolls are much cheaper than they are now.

    12. this is a rather complicated question for me personally. I must agree with many of the earlier statements that the price of the doll is part of what makes its special. Because of the amount of time and effort that you have to put into getting the money for the doll. Thusly the doll becomes a representation of that time and effort.
However for someone like me theres also a flip side. Where in I sometimes feel guilty about how much i have spent on my dolls. Because i know all the other things i could have purchased such as things to help around the house and what not. Theres also the thought that I could have been saving that money for when i really needed it. So if they cost less i wouldn't have that guilt. (Granted i feel that way any time i spend a large sum of money)
      I dont think i would want them to be as cheep as something like a Barbie or what not but maybe having some more dolls in the $150 range (shipping included) would be nice ^^;
as for how many i would have... if they were the price of say barbies or even monster high and were the same quality....i don't want to think about it to be honest >.> then again considering the fact that i spend at least a month or so on each doll when it comes in to do the face up body blush make their wig and their clothes as well as writing up their backstory and what not >.>
I may not have as many as i think i would. Probably around 4 or five more then i do now.

    13. I wouldn't go out and buy a million, but I think I'd have the collection I've been working for :sweat

    14. I collect so many toys as it is, including lots of off topic dolls for customizing and general enjoyment and I've found I love my £15 Heath Burns or sylvanian families chocolate bunny as much as any of my BJDs. They get names, clothes, custom work, far too many pictures taken of them, and dragged along on adventures all over the place.

I was definitely drawn to the expense and the exclusivity of BJDs when I first got into them but I doubt it would change my mind about starting to collect them if they were more affordable. I'd probably end up with far more than I have the room for if I base it off existing numbers of affordable toys.

    15. I would buy them as I do now but I would have had my grail already

    16. Honestly I would love them just the same. I get attached to "toys" very easily, and I cherish them for years. For me, it would just make them easier to get, and more to love.

    17. Accidentally posted thrice in this thread due to wifi issues, please ignore!

    18. This is a double edged sword Question for me.

While I would love that they would be cheaper, I rather enjoy the thrill of 'The Hunt'. Researching the doll you like, how much it is, what company it from, seeking out owner pics and asking endless questions. :)
And then the looking and the waiting, the Joy of finding (or the angst of losing) said grail-doll and then purchasing, the waiting (again!) and then the homecoming...phew! it's quite the roller coaster for a Doll!.

If all the major doll companies suddenly lowered their prices that thrill would be diminished.

To me BJDs are not a 'Status' thing. It is more of an outlet for my creativity, and I enjoy buying genuine artist made BJDs to support said artists so that they can continue to create more beautiful Dolls.

    19. I would have, like, a ton. But as said before, the quality wouldn't be as great, so pictures wouldn't be as great, etc. And the fact that they're so expensive makes them more limited. If they were cheaper, everyone would have dolls alike.

    20. I'd probably get some of my favorite sculpts but I don't think I could or ever will have a huge collection. I think 10 will be my limit and I currently own 3.
