If Soom released their monthly dolls as a basic line next year, how would you feel?

Jun 9, 2010

    1. Does the timing of this thread strike anyone else as odd? Coincidence, or secret Soom leak?:)

A few days ago, I said (here on this very thread, in fact) that Soom would probably never do this, and they totally just did. So I stand corrected.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. I am not personally really into the whole limited thing, and I don't have a full MD myself (I do have some Ai legs, and a Syen head coming in a split). I feel bad for the people who spent a lot on their limited MD and now feel betrayed. And I do think Soom was pretty evasive about it--saying "we will never re-release Limited Beryl" is kind of unclear, let's be honest.

But. The new human Beryl is very different from the fantasy Beryl, and I don't know that she's going to make the original worth less. It's not quite the same as a full re-release. I'm a little bummed by the people expressing full-on hostility (as opposed to annoyance/disappointment) on Soom's website. It seems extreme, though of course this is a very personal hobby. I admit I'm pleased that I might get a chance to get a doll I totally missed out on because I wasn't on DoA yet (hello, Amber). So many of the MD sculpts are really special, I was sad to see them in such limited runs.

So I think I'm basically pro- the new Beryl. But, Soom ought to be clearer--they have a lot of dedicated fans and they should have treated them better.

    2. Honestly, I have the human parts of a MD myself, and if Soom rereleases her, I will still be happy to see her.

Honestly, Soom owns the rights to do whatever they want with their molds, and no one owner has a right to complain to the company because they released a new version of her. there is nothing wrong with your doll, and Soom has no reason to bother themselves with the matters of second-hand prices. It was your decision to buy a doll second hand, you didn't give them any of your money when you bought it, it is out of their hands. I really dislike the argument that because you can't get a huge marked-up price for the doll on the second-hand market, then you have a right to be angry that they released this new version. You really don't. It's their mold, their product, and they can sell it whenever they want. End of story. I'm also agreeing with the fact that people just need to learn to grow up instead of going to the Soom store and threatening to sue the company, or yelling and insulting and threatening them in any way, shape, or form. I'm happy that others are going to get the Beryl they wanted, it doesn't belittle the doll of anyone who bought the original Beryl in any way, and "bragging rights" isn't enough of a reason for anyone to throw a hissy fit. You should love the doll because it's your doll, not because you have a special, super awesome thing that nobody else can have. That's one of the only things about this hobby that really gets under my skin.

I honestly would be very happy if they released a basic version of all of the MDs they had done. There are a few of them I would have liked to own, and I know there are others who would have liked to own them, too. It wouldn't be the same as the LE doll because it would not have all of the MD bells and whistles, and just the fact that it was one of the first ones made still means that it is more rare then the new ones. Apparently no one remembers the concept of owning one of the first of something. In the Transformers community, many of the figures were reused down the line for new characters or simply new releases. The same exact mold. But that didn't devalue the originals in any way, and in a lot of ways, it made the first much more valuable.

Seriously, though. I love this new Beryl. if she wasn't so frowny, she would work perfectly for a character I've been thinking about shelling lately. I can't wait to see what people do with her, she's so veluptuous and curvy! :D If they ever release a NS Yrie, I'll be so tickled, I can't wait to see what she'll look like!

    3. there are a lot of raging emotions here!!! D8>
i'll be brief...i think its awesome that soom is doing this.
there are quite a few of us who don't always have money lying around to purchase these MDs. I have to save for many many months before i can afford a regular doll. and i'm really upset that i missed out on so many beautiful dolls. especially the cute tiny ones...my heart longs for Afi or Hati and Skoll! <3333
and the only reason i see that's really bugging people is the monetary/resale value of their MDs, which is rather petty. why buy such an amazing doll and only concern yourself with its resale value??? you're obviously buying for the wrong reasons.
so i hope that soom does this for their other MDs as well. it would answer so many pleas for re-releases~ <3

    4. Thing is in the doll community the mold is important, the release is less important because dolls are broken up. A full set, blushed doll first release will hold more value, but when someone goes down to just the head, it's value is on the mold. I personally find alot of value in the Sard Hooves, and so glad they haven't re-released them what with all their different hooved dolls that followed. The hooves being seperate from the head.

    5. But the dolls were available to you, just you couldn't afford them. Means you should have saved up for them if you really wanted them. And can still do so. And it's not just the Resale/monitary value, it's the preseved value that it's 1 of x amount. yes that rarity can be equated to monitary value, but the rarity is a value all on it's own as well that the owner can value. People who buy just LEs not because of monitary, but because they like the 'rarity'.

    6. Exactly what I was thinking :)

    7. I agree completely, so if these re-released dolls have no fantasy parts, i don't think people will get so miffed. And i'll be surprised if they are made available with the fantasy parts anyway.

    8. I didn't mean to start a whole fuss, just stating my opinion, but i haven't been in this hobby for so many years to know about these limited dolls. i've only been in the hobby for about a year and a half.
The rarity is a whole other factor. i don't know, i look into buying dolls for other reasons than simple rarity.
Sorry if i ruffled any feathers, this is a really touchy subject! D8>

    9. Hey, nocturneofsilence, would you mind tossing a few numbers my way? I mean, just think "lottery winner", and pm me the numbers that pop into your head...lol...

    10. I think one person commenting on the Beryl page said it best by noting there is no guarantee that SOOM will release any other molds. And honestly, if I had the money (and actually wanted) a Beryl, I would much rather have bought her for the ridiculous aftermarket prices than wait TWO YEARS to buy her. And then you don't even get the neat wings or the CW skin.

And personally, if they did re-release Sard (for example), I'm not sure I wouldn't just prefer the CW version still. People say that this re-release will hurt Beryl's resale. And I think it will. For example, when Woosoo was offered again (especially in his adorable MNF form), the resale went down a lot. But honestly, I don't feel much sympathy for scalpers. There's getting back the money you paid (and possibly a bit more for future dolls;)), and then there is scalping. However, if you prefer the CW version, you will still have to pay quite a bit for her. Not scalping prices, but limited edition prices. And I don't mind paying limited edition prices. It's the blatant scalping, I have a problem with.

But to answer the question, despite how much I regret not getting a Sard back in the day, if I did buy him on DOA, I might be a bit upset to find out they are re-releasing him (for example). Right now some sellers are asking for $2000! I remember when he was at $1500 (and I thought that was a great price actually considering how popular he is!) So, I can definitely see how people would be royally upset for paying those prices to see him again for cheaper. But still, some people actually do want the CW version with the hooves. So, I don't think this is going to destroy anyone's "investment" at this point.

    11. Nope - "Seemed to be stating rather certainly" and "it seemed like they wouldn't re-release" does not amount to a guarantee. Whenever a company says they're not planning to do something, or that something is impossible at this time, you hear what you WANT to hear. You may think that what they really said was "We'll never ever rerelease this sculpt ever again", but this assumption never turns out to be reality-based.

I totally grok that the perceived specialness is reduced for certain collectors, of course. Some collectors absolutely DO base their shopping choices on release size/availability, and this kind of thing hurts for them. They still understand that the second LE is still Limited... but they're still angry that now their doll has, say, 300 brethren around the world, instead of only 100. If I were that type of collector, sure, I would be miffed too. Rightly so.

(But as luck would have it, I'm not that type of collector; I love my low blood-pressure too much. ^^)

But SHE is still limited too. Her face is still limited. Just because the sculpt was released twice, does NOT mean it's no longer limited. Both editions of Beryl are still limited. The sculpt itself is still limited. As long as the new girl isn't a Basic edition, then Beryl is All-LE-All-The-Time. Make sense?

DOA seems to go through this same drama every time a company rereleases a limited sculpt-- Volks released Isao II, Shiro 2, Spring Stroll edition Liz, Tohya II, etc.; Iplehouse released both Tan Soo Ri 1 & 2; CP Woosoos have come out a couple times now; all limited sculpts that are still limited.

    12. lol i posted some later back in the thread but i'll post more :P

      6 15 27 14 3 9 11

:P If you win big I'll expect you to buy me a Volks SD 16 Kira.

Purely coincidence! The idea for this thread just occurred to me when I was browsing the Iple website while I had one of my human version MD girls in my lap. I was in total shock when I looked at BJDcollectasy this morning and saw Beryl there.

    13. LOL about two pages back she put some up! I'm feelin lucky too! :D

    14. Oops missed that, this thread is moving so quickly, it's hard to keep up with!

Ok, so I'll go find the other numbers and play them both!

nocturneofsilence, if I win big, you're Kira will be on the way!!! heeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!

    15. I only have 2 Soom MDs... NS Chrom and Tan Chalco... I'm not worried about SOOM releasing their MDs as basic sculpts because my Chalco is tanned and he will never be released again in tan (or so I hope!). As for my NS Chrom, I sold all his parts and he ended up being CHEAPER than the Super Gem basic lines... X3

If Soom decides to release MDs as Basics, then I can buy all the heads I want to interchange with my Super Gem NS body! XD

But I know the feeling of the people who have spent a lot of money buying limiteds and want them to stay limited. I want my Chalco to stay limited, of course. >.> But since he's tanned, then he is. My advice is, if you're buying MDs, buy the limited color resin. Buy them ONLY if they're in tan, grey, white skin, or tawny. NEVER buy the NS ones because if someday they're released as basics, you'll be pissed off for sure. =_=

    16. Probably off topic, but how did I miss this ):
I could have sworn they were only released once. My brain sort of imploded at reading this because somehow I've failed to get one more than once it seems.

    17. There's only been one Woosoo release unless they're talking about the MNF Woosoo but that's not really the same thing at all. I suspect there was a brainfart and they mean CP Breakaway. :P

    18. I personally don't have a problem with them re-releasing their limiteds. If they released them with their special parts and special skin colors... that would be something to raise an eyebrow at. But as long as it's just basic dolls in basic skintones, I'm fine with it.

    19. besides guys by the looks of it there re-realseing her as a 60cm girl...it's under the gem!

I diecided to butt in sorry,,,

    20. Well said hellsingmongrel :) I also agree all the MDs should be re-released (and in TAN!!! >w<).

Can I also add that it is not Soom's nor any other company's problem what you pay for their doll on the secondhand market. They have no control on exactly how much its market up or valued at and they are not getting ANY of those profits nor are they benefiting in any way from you owning their doll which you didn't buy directly from them. Therefore, I think its pretty outrageous of anyone to be angry at Soom for jacked up MP prices of limiteds, especially to have the audacity to complain about it to them on their website. Yeah you might have waited if you would have known about the possibility of a re-release, but thats really neither here nor there. You wanted the doll, you paid the ridiculous price, you got your doll, now be happy. This is coming from a chick who paid all in all $550 + traded a head worth $150 in order to get a blank skoll no extras, valued originally at $327, from the MP. Personally I would be ecstatic if they decided to re-release skoll/hati (omfg especially in tan resin <3).
