If Soom released their monthly dolls as a basic line next year, how would you feel?

Jun 9, 2010

    1. Ya know, I think a tan Sard would be the only way I could like Sard. Admittedly, he is not my favourite sculpt (no offense to Sardophiles out there) but I could see liking him in tan, he'd look less dead. But then again, I felt the same about this new Beryl, I love how she looks when she looks a little healthier!

    2. Beryl was limited to 50 this time around, nowhere does it explicitly say "limited to 50 dolls, ever." Maybe next month there will be a different MD offered as a "limited" basic. And eventually Beryl could be offered again. As I mentioned before, this may be the replacement of the "For Five Days" sales of their standard SGs and MAs. *shrug*

But seeing how quickly Beryl sold out, they'd be insane not to. But then. . . has anyone actually accused Soom of sanity? :XD: Three releases in one month and two of them new. . . ? *_*

    3. I think some people wouldnt like that since they had to pay a helluva lot more to get that specific doll, whereas if it was just a basic doll, the price would be different no?
But then others would be happy to have a chance to get the dolls they wanted but couldnt get at that time.

I think soom should do it to be honest. I think they're spending too much of their time with the monthlies and not enough of their basic dolls.

    4. I can definitely see how people who bought one secondhand would be pissed off. XD;; And like, if you had one of the originals and suddenly they got rereleased and became madly popular, I can see how you could be annoyed because most people might look at you and think "oh, she's just part of the [Sard] craze that's going on right now. That doll's so common, it's getting a little boring." (I'm not sure if it's "good" or "right" to feel annoyed at that, but people WOULD.) I mean come on, it IS a little fun to own a unique thing in this world of mass production.

Personally I might be a little disappointed, because even though I don't own a Soom, I DO like to see them and think "ooh, that's a bit of a rare sight"... it's like seeing a fox in your yard when you'd usually expect to see a raccoon or stray cat. XD;;;; It just makes things a bit interesting.
But I might be happy too, because there is ONE Soom monthly I might like to buy one day.

But from Soom's POV, the monthlies would really be a sort of ingenious way to test the market. Rerelease the hottest sellers and make a mint. They could even take the time to improve the sculpt a bit. (Like, I hear a lot of them are terrible posers or have chipping problems..) That way the originals would stay fairly unique, and everyone else who didn't get one the first time around could be happy too. :3

    5. I have an Amber and I would actually love if they released her as a basic like they just did with Beryl, because, though I love her faun self, I find that I like her best as a human, and would adore to see her as a full human with fleshtone skin. Or, wow, tanskin?

I like the idea of them bringing back old limiteds, I like anything that drives down a doll from some insane price, I think the doll community needs to learn to share more and be more generous as a whole, and I think limiteds brought back as basics is an unintentional step toward that. So.. I'm very all for it.

    6. I usually don't like the animal parts and don't like WS dolls...a normal, human version without strange ears etc. would be perfect for me :V I love the rerelease of Beryl a lot more than the first release.

I'm sure people would be pissed. Paying 1500+ for a limited doll and months later they rerelease it.
The only special thing about most of the MDs however are the animal parts, and sometimes the skin color.
A Heliot in normal skin without the whole unicorn thing = a lot of people wouldn't buy him.
Sard is a nice example, the really special thing about him are the hooves, since he's just a Dia on a male body :/
If Soom decides to sell the heads in a normal version it wouldn't be that bad...the other version is still the limited and "better" one.

    7. So how would you feel if they released the monthly dolls as just a basic doll?
It would be unfortunate for everyone who has bought the secondhand dolls for a lot of money. But then again since the fantasy parts are nonexistent it may not be that bad.

Is it right for a company to present a doll as "limited" (instead of saying, "limited version") and then release it as basic later? Is that lying?
Limited for me is never to be released again with the same concept, clothes, face up, shoes, wig ever ever again.

Would you be upset, and why?
No. They aren't the same with the original MDs. Very different.

      Would you be thrilled?
      Nope.

I love the MDs because they have fantasy parts. Because they have fantasy face up. And fantasy skin.
Like Vesuvia..my love..even if she will be released in NS..I won't be thrilled. How could I? I love her because she is purple, I love her because she is scorpion. My zodiac and my favorite color.
I love Cuprit because her black horns, because her icy face up, because her ice feet.
The first time I saw Beryl LMoD..I was so 'wow'ed. But after seeing the original Beryl. I am speechless. She is the queen I must admit..the horns..the milky skin..the pink lips..everything is perfect.
That's why I won't be affected by this special order

    8. I quite like the way the monthly dolls look all magical and mysterious :D but it can be quite annoying that you like one of the monthly doll sculpts but the month that they sell them is over i think it would give people another chance to buy a sculpt they like

    9. I'm not into big fantasy dolls, but would have bought Vesuvius anyway, except that she had purple skin. I really loved her face and would buy a normal skin human version of her in a heartbeat. I'm sure I'm not the only person who feels this way. The fantasy monthly dolls will always be unique and limited, so I can't see that it would diminish their value for Soom to put her face or a similar one on a normal skin human doll.

    10. Personally, I'm a little disappointed. I've always considered 'limited' dolls as limited sculpts (so, yes, a CW Beryl is exactly the same as a NS Beryl), because, for me, everything else is customisable, so I thought Soom was pretty awesome for being about the only company that offered truly 'limited' dolls. It seems like a betrayal of principles, but, of course, they are only operating like another other normal doll company now, and it was only ever my impression of them.

Otherwise... Well, I'm pretty alright if they decided to make MDs into a basic line. I wouldn't even mind if they decided to offer the gamut of resin colours. If they decide to sell the fantasy parts seperately, that's alright by me too. I like fantasy parts. If I can get them seperately, without having to rush for cash once a month, that would be awesome. If I can get them to fit bodies that are not Soom's badly jointed Supergems, that would be best, but, hey, a company's gotta take care of their own business first, yea?

It would annoy me, though, if they decide to sell fantasy parts, but only those that are popular, and stop coming up with new parts. It would annoy me in the same way as if I had gotten to the end of a particularly good book/series and found out that there was no more.

And even though people keep complaining about hooves, all of Soom's hooves are actually quite different. I wouldn't trade my Chalco's pointy goat hooves for boring horsey hooves like Heliots, for example, or even for Sard's equally pointy but three-jointed hooves (speaking strictly about sculpt here and not colour or fit). If they offered only one type of basic hooves, I probably wouldn't even look at them anymore. But that's what basic is about, I guess.

All said, well, if Soom stopped doing monthlys and started releasing their MDs as basic dolls, they would totally lose my business simply because I've already bought the MDs I want, and the only reason I stalk them is to see if their new MDs would strike my fancy. :D But it probably won't be a bad thing for them, seeing as I'm not fond of most of their sculpts anyway~

Oh, and I suppose a lot of people will be able to get their dream dolls, so 'yay' for them or something.

    11. Personally, I would love it if Soom released the monthlies as a basic line! I love Euclase, since he was released during October, which is the month of my birthday. Financially, I could not afford him when he first came out and while I was saving for him, he was sold out and I can't find him anywhere on the DoA market.

I would be extremely happy if they did make a basic line for their monthly dolls....but I don't think it's gonna happen.

    12. omg! the saaaame thing happened to me! the swd myu i bought was white skin and soooo expensive!! i was super pissed when she was released as an FCS option head >_< i would have preferred to get a buncha FCS extras~
      and not that i would ever sell her i <3 my dinah but if i were to get out the hobby in the future i would NEVER get back all the money i paid ;o;

    13. Personally, I'd love that. ^^ Unlike Iplehouse, Soom doesn't offer the fantasy parts as options. There are some dolls that I'd love to own the sculpt of, but I really don't have a use for the fantasy parts. I know I could get the doll in a split or something, but if Soom released them as a basic line, it would be cheaper and save everybody some hassle. ^^* I would have loved a Chalco sans the linnus parts. ><*

    14. I would love so many of the MD's in basic, but sadly I suspect they will be released in the Super Gem size which is unfortunately much too big for me T_T

Now, if they were to release a Gem sized basic version of their MD's.... >.>;; I think my wallet would hate me

    15. This. So this. I thought that Vesuvia was so lovely, but I didn't really have a place for a purple girl.

I'd love for Soom to release their MDs as basics. To me, the fantasy parts, accessories, outfits and unusual resin colors were what made the MD versions unique. As long as they didn't re-release the fantasy parts and the unusual resin colors, then that's fine.

    16. So how would you feel if they released the monthly dolls as just a basic doll?
I have two Soom MDs. I wouldn't care if they released them as basic--because I don't buy dolls based on whether they are limited or not. I buy dolls I like. Limited just means that I'm forced to buy dolls within a certain time period--or try to find them second-hand later... That's all! Does it matter that there are 5 other people with my doll--or 500 others? No. Does it matter that I could only buy my doll within a set amount of time or not? Only financially and time-wise. But the doll is the same!

Is it right for a company to present a doll as "limited" (instead of saying, "limited version") and then release it as basic later? Is that lying?
There used to be certain rules for something being "limited." Usually it means that a certain thing (doll, artwork, whatever) will only be made a certain number and stopped. But it is always possible to make changes--like different skin tone, etc., and then make another release. So as long as everything is not exactly the same, I suppose it is not wrong to make a basic release later. It is also good to know if they do this or not, so buyers know what to expect. With BJDs, there have always been limiteds that are re-released in slightly different ways later on, so people should know to expect this!!!

Would you be upset, and why?
No. I am happy with my dolls. Although--it would be nice to know ahead of time so in case I don't have money I won't be upset or won't have to pay too much in the Marketplace to find a doll that will just be released later.

I have a Sard--Soom already released more Sards in normal skin after the original Monthly release. As I was perfectly happy with White Skin, I was fine with it. I suppose it would be nicer to know about Soom maybe releasing Sards in other skin tones later on, for those who weren't too happy with White Skin, but now we have an idea that maybe they will do things like that, but it's still taking a chance on it, so maybe people will just try and buy what they KNOW they can get for sure! That's my take, anyway.

      Would you be thrilled?
For dolls that I missed-- sure!!! :)

And for dolls that I have-- why not?, although it won't really affect me at all.

    17. I guess part of what confuses me about this is that some of the MDs were 'available' in the same form as the re-releases before Beryl. The very ability to get Dia's head on a male SG body made an equivalently 'human' version of Sard as the NS Beryl is a 'human' Beryl, after all. (And for quite a while, you could get this combination in WS, which would make it even closer to the MD Sard than this Beryl is to the MD Beryl.) Vega? They released a male Vega some time ago, and I can't recall seeing any of the people who bought the yummygorgeous VegaManMermaid calling out for blood on Soom's comments area for doing so. Deneb's sculpt has been around also, and her head sculpt has been used for an MD with no fantasy parts at all -- just a tan skintone. Only her skintone, outfit, and faceup were really limited.

So this idea of those head molds never being used before or again really does seem to be something assumed more than observed, if you ask me.

    18. I'd be thrilled if SOOM released their MDs as a basic line~ The MD tinies have much nicer faces than the basic ones, I think. Except I'd really just want the fantasy parts that came with them, and the first post does say just human. Soo, if they didn't do them with the fantasy parts, I would probably not be interested. LOL

    19. I don't think it will bother me that much, sure, I might be somewhat miffed if the standard version was a little cheaper, but I wouldn't kick up a fuss. I'll just get over it in time.

    20. I would be stoked. I want a Sard so badly... He's just so beautiful... D': ...Sigh.
