If Soom released their monthly dolls as a basic line next year, how would you feel?

Jun 9, 2010

    1. Ooh Good point Nocturne. I never even considered the idea of Soom just saying "we don't know yet". /facepalm.
      I need my daily caffeine.

Also, it's true, pick my lotto tickets please.

As to what Soom can say about aftermarket sales.. I think they'd say "crud, we should have just released it as a basic sculpt to begin with, we missed out on a lot of money" and then possibly that they're proud the dolls still have such a high following and are worth so much to everyone. But as a business, the money part would be foremost ;) The pride would be the artists'.

    2. Some time now I have started falling out of love with Soom. If they do sart releasing their MD is basic versions even without and fantasy parts I would be terribly annoyed!!

I am a person who actually has a problem bonding with limited dolls, so I ended up only owning just one and I have a serious problem bonding with her. The reason is simple. I am too afraid to take the doll out of the box and play with it, because I fear that it might fall and break something or that it will yellow etc. Having that said, I would feel that I have been lied to when I bought the doll under the impression that it was limited. I messed my wish list to get it, pushed back other sculpts that I liked or even missed another limited doll and some times I had to go through the inflated prices of the MP to get what I wanted.

It would definitely destroy my trust for the company and it would affect my love for their sculpts.

    3. I meant on the Soom page. I saw some of the usernames from this thread and read the flow of names and comment wrongly. For a second I thought people were using other people's names to flame

    4. That I do agree on. I plan on buying some Volks girls that may be rereleased in the future. Who knows. But I guess what I was aiming for was to try to see why others are angry. While I would be irked for a moment, I'd get over it, because it would be a doll I originally had plans to pay out the neck for. Money is just money, anyways.

    5. I don't know that any of them would be thrilled about other people making profits off of selling their dolls used, to be honest. It's certainly not something they can be held to customer-service-wise. Maa, the artist who sculpted Bermann, for example, probably did have a sneaking sense of pride over the insane prices that happened there ;).

I'm still inclined to think that LEs are a bigger money-maker than basics. It's entirely possible I'm wrong about that, but I doubt all of the biggest companies would keep putting out so many shiny LEs if the basics were where the action was.

    6. Also... Soom can't exactly control the aftermarket prices of their dolls... there's some comments on that Beryl page on Soom's site that are more or less complaining to Soom that they had to pay aftermarket prices to get the doll. No-one made anyone pay aftermarket prices... certainly not Soom.

    7. I asked Soom if they would release Beryl as a basic and they told me that would not use the head mold again. Maybe they think if they do she's a limited it will be OK. Iple does that with their limited's. You know they'll do a basic as well as recurring RS versions and I'm fine with that because that's how Iple does things. But Soom has run their monthlies differently. And I think they're now angering many of their most loyal customers.

    8. i must say in reference to the first posts question

i own a crap tone of mds. mostly yos. and fantasy parts, but i can honesty say i wouldn't be mad at all. it would actually make me rather happy. might make it easier to fill in body gaps, XD.

it might hurt the after market value on a few but not many i think (2 of my mds came second hand. price of a doll on pieces eek). speically if they do it with out fantasy parts. anyone with a limited faceuped heads price is gonna go up probably though. and to begin with it really was the fantasy parts that made those dolls really in my mind. so that could be the start of why i feel this way. but i wouldn't mind seeing more owner pics too of the md heads done in other ways. :)

    9. Hmm... Perhaps it is because I'm not a person who buys dolls to have something uneek, but because I love the dolls, but I can't understand why someone would be so viciously angry as some of the posters on the Soom website. Really, to me it is the more, the merrier. If more people can have the joy to own the dolls I love, I'm happy.

This Beryl isn't the same as the limited version anyway, so I doubt that the aftermarket price will go down that much. A little, yes, but I'm sure there are plenty of people who'd want the original fullset Beryl, because of her pretty horns and hooves.

    10. I honestly think that at the time they did not plan on doing this.
This is the one fault in the re-release. Companies should learn to never say never. :(

Management changes, employees come and go... things do change in a comapany. I am not saying SOOM is justified in this case, but perhaps that person was misinformed, did not have all the information, or is no longer even working for SOOM.

There is no way for us to know the whole story or situation. The only thing we can do is express our opinion to SOOM in a civil manner and move on with our lives. (Well, that and vent or gloat here as well. ;))

    11. I always thought I really didn't like SOOM's monthly dolls but then I saw tan Chalco (sorry if I misread his name) and I've just read the news page and seen that lovely Beryl and I think I would be delighted if I could get both as basics. I detest 60% of fantasy dolls anyway so not having hooves etc would not bother me in the slightest. Having said that I can totally see why somebody would be pissed off if they had spent loads for the human version the first time around because they thought it was totally limited.

    12. Well said! :)

    13. I'd be THRILLED if they released the limiteds as basic dolls next year. The limiteds are waaay out of my price-range, and they are such precious, beautiful dolls... If I could actually have the opportunity to buy an Onyx, or Sard? Forget about it.<3 I'd take it.

    14. The only similarity between the first Beryl release and the recent NS one is the face sculpt. Don't forget the original Beryl release had a limited faceup, outfit, fantasy parts and was in WS. It is not the same limited doll. I don't know why there are so many upset people - no one got upset when Soom used the Dia head for Sard and only changed the ears - doesn't that make Dia a standard release of Sard? I personally think it's great that they're recycling their old headsculpts and are styling them in new ways, rather than just thrusting out more fantasy parts.

I don't think this will drop the value of the original Beryl either - take for example the original Dollshe boys, their heads and bodies still go for much more than the original retail price, despite the fact that they have been re-released. Yes there are differences in the body (just as there are differences between the two Beryls) but the heads are nearly identical, with some small changes.

    15. I agree with you and depending on how they structure these basic editions, I think I like this. I purchased two of the large MD's for different reasons. Chrom, I only wanted for his fantasy parts and persona and promptly sold off his extra human head and hands. Chalco for the opposite reason- I just wanted his human form. I think the basics- if this is what Soom is choosing to do, will sustain them in the economy the same way Iplehouse does their business. I love my Luo, but definitely wasn't interested in his limited fullset. The IH RS releases are optimal because it allows me to purchase the doll on my terms without having to sell, split off or hunt for extra parts and clothing.

If I hadn't been able to purchase Luo as a basic then I would have to suck it up and pay the secondary market fullset price which as others have mentioned- still hold their value.

I found myself shocked to be attracted to this new Beryl. I didn't care for her in WS or with the fantasy parts and outfit, but she looks like a very potential kick butt sort of character I had in mind.

My only issue here is how Soom may go about releasing a couple of the earlier tiny MD's like Hati and Skoll. I CHOSE to pay the second hand prices because I made the stupid decision to skip out on getting them when they were available straight from Soom. The sticking point with Hati and Skoll though is that they were ONLY released in NS and didn't have the regular head and romantic head options. What is Soom going to do when it comes to these two? Are they even going to rerelease the tinies as basics? If Soom released a basic Hati and Skoll, I don't think I would be upset if they were say WS or tan- something the LIMITED version wasn't offered in. At this point that would be the only choice they could make with these two because the tiny MD option parts increased as the months went on. Something has to differentiate between the limited Skoll and any re release.

For the record, I think I would love to have a human version of Hati in tan skin. :)

Agreed! I can't hold Soom responsible for what I paid when I chose to forego buying when the doll was available from Soom directly. I'm personally not that mad, not mad enough to be rude to Soom on their own site. At least I didn't pay what Lati yellows are going for on the secondary market. That one blows my mind for something so small.

    16. I would love it.. I've been hitting myself in the head for missing one limited for some time now.
So I'd totally love it if he'd be rereleased <3

    17. Yep. This is how a lot of people feel that had to buy it second hand, THAT is the crappy part in all of this.

I won't be buying monthly dolls after this because I really just want the human versions. I think this move on Soom's part may hurt the rest of their MD business from people who are going to be like "oh! I'll just wait then".

    18. I would be sooooo epically thrilled. I love Amber and if I had a chance to get her pretty little face my life would be complete!

    19. I'm going to think twice, as if i could afford the chance to get a Human basic heliot, witout elf ears, i'm going to buy him!I have tones of soom fanatsy parts so i could easily put some on basic Soom doll.

    20. hyschara - ;):)!

Reshana - The idea of these gorgeous head molds never being used again I think would be really sad....can you imagine, the mold sitting on a shelf, in a dark room, never to be seen again? That would truly be a shame.
