If Soom released their monthly dolls as a basic line next year, how would you feel?

Jun 9, 2010

    1. People are pissed at soom because they listened to their customers? I mean as in people asking them to restock a doll. They clearly brought out her again, BUT she is not the same as she was in 08. We dont even know if she is a "basic" yet either. So people who have the old one, still have their LE. People who can buy this one, might get their dreamdoll. I dont see the problem really.

I have myself 3 MDs. I couldnt care less if Soom decided to rerelease them. I have mine, Im happy with them, end of story.

People who bought the dolls from marketplace knew the price they were paying. Sorry but they must clearly have loved them enough to spend extra dollars. They still have the LE!

Sorry, all this QQing reminds me of World of warcraft when raiders moaned about tier gear started being available for the "regular" players.

I just see this as a win/win situation. Older collectors have their LE still. New people can get their dreamdoll (well, so I think anyway). Soom gets more productions.

    2. I'd be pretty happy actually... I really love the MD sculpts, though I'm not into the fantasy stuff. End :'D Me wants Chrom >,<

    3. I think someone else mentioned this earlier, but this thread has been moving fast!

Remember people, this version may be limited too...She's under the heading 'Order Chance' and sub-heading 'Special Order', which doesn't sound like a basic to me and doesn't sound like she'll be around for long.....just my speculating, I guess we won't know that for sure until SOOM releases more info.

    4. Yarr, 'twas me :) And yeah, I guess it's all spectulation, but considering they made a whole new category for her on the site, and she's not just thrown in with the regular Super Gems... ah well, I'm sure we'll all find out soon! :)

    5. You are 100% correct. I think the biggest reason people are QQing is because they said "never going to release the head sculpt again." Blizzard never said they would never release the tier gear in a badge system.

So to me it's more.... one thing being said and something opposite happening. That is kind of annoying in any situation.

Do I think people should be enraging and throwing a tantrum on the Soom site? NO!
Are their feelings completely unreasonable? No.

    6. Personally, I also think it is a pretty big assumption to make that just because they are offering another version of Beryl, that SOOM plans to do it with all the monthly sculpts. They could just be testing the waters with this Beryl release.

      Time will tell of course.

    7. kateb - I knew it was already written somewhere and would have quoted your name, if I could remember even which page it was on...anyway thanks (waving to you in Oxford! :)).

I hate teasers.......I wish they would just go BLAM here's another doll, here are all her details and here is the price! ^^

    8. Is it just me, but the whole 'Order Chance' makes me think there will be a lottery for it. Maybe it's a one off doll they have done for a convention in Asia or something.

    9. A doll's limited nature has never been part of its appeal to me. I like the doll sculpts I like. Period. If they happen to be limited, OK. If they happen to be standard, OK. I've owned equal numbers of both and can honestly say that the number of other dolls out there like mine never made my doll look more/less beautiful, never made it pose better/worse, never made its resin quality better/worse, never made its history with me more/less sentimental. A doll is what it is, to me.

On a similar note, to me a doll is always worth what I paid for it. If it wasn't, I never would have bought it to begin with. Dolls are not investments, in my mind. I don't buy them to speculate, and I don't expect to get back what I paid for them years down the road. That's insanity, in my personal opinion, because you never know what will happen to doll companies, the world economy, the value of the dollar, or the hobby itself over time.

I understand that everyone's manner of interacting with their dolls is different, and many people, clearly, do not share my opinions on this. But I hope, after seeing some of the outrageous comments on Soom's web site about lawsuits and hatred, that even those who don't agree can come to a point where they are at peace with it.

    10. Coming from someone who has purchased a Monthly Doll from Soom, but in the light that I simply liked the sculpt and had little care for the fantasy parts... I have to say that this makes me very, very happy. The hope that I might get the doll I liked so much in a different skintone, for cheaper and more how I wanted him to begin with is amazing! And after this personal experience I had with Soom, and the attitude that I've felt from them over the time I've known who they were, this entire dramatic ordeal is actually slightly amusing to me.

I think both Soom and the people ragging on them are at fault here, at least with the newly developed Beryl situation. I think Soom still needs to still kind of figure out a few things, and I think the flamers need to grow up some. Plus, it's a new doll! It's not like they just put the old Beryl back up for sale. And don't forget that a whole half of the reason that the Soom MDs were so limited and original is still the fantasy parts, no matter how you slice it, and those will still remain just as limited.

And in my opinion, if you only bought the original MD doll(s) just for the limited nature or its resale value, I'm going to have to say... "ur doin it wrong".

In short, I have to agree with several people in saying that I believe much more strongly in the way Iplehouse does things, where they release a special, limited edition of a doll, and then release the basic version for normal purchase. Oft times I found myself loving a sculpt when it comes out, but find problems with it, or I don't want to pay for all the extra stuff that comes with it, or I don't have any kind of money at the time. And if this means that Soom is starting to learn from how Iplehouse has been doing... ie, listening to their customers from the very beginning and hearing what they wanted and had to say... then hopefully they'll start becoming a company that I will want to buy from again.

    11. ALSO.... the fantasy parts of (at least the female MD's) are only in GS and CW.... if they release NS versions of the monthly dolls, then the fantasy parts wouldn't even match without some careful blushing, so if someone wants a Cuprit with hooves.... then they are going to have to buy the MD Cuprit and not a NS basic Cuprit, for example.

If they start releasing fantasy parts in NS then... lol i don't know what to say to that.

Whats wrong with buying something because it's limited? If you're collecting dolls... or anything else, then I don't see how it's wrong. Not everyone in this hobby is all about customizing or playing with the dolls or giving them names, stories or personalities... some people just like to collect dolls. In the BJD hobby, I don't think there IS such a thing as "doing it wrong" because tastes and interests are so personal. And the people that just "collect dolls because of the limited nature" are supporting the companies with their money just as much as people who customize their dolls.

    12. For me, personally, I typically didn't care for the MD's fantasy parts. The only ones I really liked were the wings (Monzo, Galena), the wolf parts (Chrom, Breccia), and the alternate fantasy heads (e.g. Chrom). This is, of course, for the SD-size MDs (was never really interested in the tinies myself). Hooves, bird legs, etc. I never really cared about.

So for me, re-releasing the MDs like this is wonderful. I've always wanted a human Euclase and have been stalking the marketplace for one for a while to no avail. If they re-released Euclase in WS I would be delighted. NS would be okay too! But with WS I could dye him a funky colour.

I only recently got into the doll hobby, so I've missed a lot of wonderful Soom MD's. This would be a great chance for me to get those sculpts that I love without having to pay half a fortune! Even if these re-releases are themselves limited, it just puts that many more MD sculpts on the market. And for that, I say yay!

    13. I'd be thrilled :D I've always wanted a Chrom, Beryl, and Amber ^___^

But if they released them at a lower price than before, I would understand if the previous owners got upset because of that.

    14. I suppose I'm delving a little into things that I don't quite understand, since I've never touched into the collecting world too seriously... but if you're buying it just because it's limited, and it's resale value goes down, but you still had no intention of selling it... I'm not sure I see what the problem is. More what I meant with that statement was, if you're buying the doll with the original idea of selling it later, I don't think you have any right to be angry when the company that originally sells the doll decides to sell the dolls more themselves. I agree with Lizzard on this point:

So I'm sorry if that statement sounded too blunt, but that was my original thinking behind it.

    15. You need to remember that if you're buying second hand, you're not actually Soom's customer. They never dealt with you, they never received your money. The original buyer is their customer.

And I don't think it will hurt their business that much. There's still plenty of people who want the fantasy parts, and plenty of people who want things now. And there is no guarantee that they will be doing this kind of release with every single one of their MDs. So many people are quick to assume how things work with Soom - what will be the next release, etc, then abuse them when they don't do what they had made up in their heads. I understand this is different because people have been told that they weren't going to re-release their dolls, but there's been plenty of companies who have said the same thing then gone on to make basics or do another limited run. It would be nice for a company to keep their word, but they are a company, not a person. Making money is what they are about.

As someone said way back in this thread, this is not the end of the world. My husband's first doll was a Beryl, and he bought her because he liked her sculpt, not because it was omg limited. In fact we're quite excited to see what people will do with the NS version, she gives off a very different feel.
I understand that some people like limited dolls because they are limited, but to me it's about the sculpt. I've had dolls be limited then be released as basic, rereleased, and basic dolls I've got become discontinued. There is no guarantee that what your doll was at the time of purchase will be in years to come.

    16. I actually thought a lot about how people respond to Blizzard's news vs. actions as well. Blizzard is considered very secretive with their projects because they aren't up front about information or news. They originally used to be, and every time the community bites them for "breaking promises" they made early in the development cycle. Eventually they learned to simply stop announcing things.

I would be much happier with Soom announcing information as they know it, than keeping everything a secret and not answering the Q&A board for fear of customers lashing out about "broken promises." It may have been true at the time that they had no intention on releasing Beryl ever again, but now their business has evolved and they are finding a new way to bring this sculpt back to the market. Hopefully they can just learn from Blizzard in this and start giving responses with qualifiers such as "At this time we have no plans to re-release Beryl" instead of just giving a definite yes or no :)

So even though it's disappointing to a certain percentage of their customers, it's too bad customers feel they should vent all this rage and anger on Soom's site to the level that we've been seeing... But I definitely see how some collectors would feel a bit betrayed. It's an incredibly personal hobby after all!

    17. There are a couple of molds I'd like to have -- Galena in NS, or Vega so I can make my own merman. The current Monthly doll system doesn't work for me because it takes me about a year, not a month, to stack up dolly money, and I am not willing to buy a doll based on company photos in any case. Having a regular line of some of the head molds would be nice--especially if they were a little shorter in height than the MD's ! Also being able to find the little buggers on the site would make me more inclined to buy one as well.
/("Skip Flash Intro" would be dandy too)

    18. I love my original Beryl, she was bought from second hand for real big amount a half a year ago, and I WILL love her - but I asked Soom a few times before buying her: Could you re-realize Beryl please, I love her so much, I'd love to buy a head, in any condition, any color, with or without body, please maybe you have one for me, or maybe you have some plans - NO, told me Soom, your milds can't be re-realised, we hope you like your another dolls. So I have to by Ivette from reseller.
So actually Soom LIED and misinformed me, Beryl hasn't regular twins as Sard-Dia, so I have my beloved doll - but I don't use her horns and hooves, so regular human version of Beryl could be nice for me. I need the head only, all my dolls are customed and I don't need fullsets, but I haven't choice if I wanted to get her. And today Soom said - Haha, who wanna Beryl in NS?

I'll try to be happy for people who have a chance to get their dream - but I had my one for realy expensive cost.. I'm fan of Soom dolls, I have 6 MD, but Soom don't love me as I do, as I can see =)

    19. I am not annoyed at all by this, the limiteds are limiteds, offered with fantasy parts, limited outfits and faceups. Basic versions being released is just fine by me. I only have one of the limiteds that i use as a human, my sphaler, and I did not pay through the nose for him so I am not in the least upset (the only thing that upset me with Sphaler is I did a comm as part of the trade for the doll, and it got lost in the mail! I am remaking it now, but it is taking far too long, I do apologize to the person I am trading with). I am paying the most for my Rem Euclase with all his birdie bits, and honestly, I would not want it any other way. i WILL be happy if they release a CW or NS Euclase however..actually i would love a NS Euclase......he would fit in so well here. The rest? I really have no interest.

I think in the long run this is not going to hurt Soom's sales, it will dent their reputation, but they do a good enough job of that already.

    20. I hope they re-release Euclase, in grey. :D I have been kicking myself that I never bought him at the time. :)
