In a hobby for longer than 4 years? How is it going?

Mar 15, 2011

    1. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?
I have been here since 07-27-2006, but was into the 27cm Obisu dolls for a year before that.

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc
Yes, At first I was into the super realistic Minimees and thought Luts looked like babies. I have since did a 180, now the super realistic dolls are not my tastes and I love the personality of delfs!!!

Also,I have always kept them in a dark room, but now I made a special shelf for them in which I drape cloth over so no sun and no light from my room could ever bother them. Also I have become confident with face ups so now I do my own.

How many dolls have you got over the years?
I have had over 15 dolls, a few floating heads, many were DIM minimee dolls I had sculpted of my characters, and since I feel out of love with the super realistic look they have since been sold.

How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?
My fist BJD was a Fullset limited Elf Ducan, if he has mellowed ( which I am sure he has) I can not tell, his second pair of hands which I first used or only about a month than put them back into the box is the same color as him, there is no difference.

While my BW SS Elf Shiwoo ( I am not the first owner) had mellowed to a noticable point. I have recently bought him 2009 hands and they are a smigen more white than he is, but its still pretty good for a doll made in 2004. None of my dolls have stains or cracks.

    2. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?
      February 2008

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc
I'm more careful with them and I've become brave enough to restring them on my own.
I also try to keep my dolls out of the sun as much as possible.

How many dolls have you got over the years?
Five with two on the way.

How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?
My first has yellowed unevenly, but that's my fault. A year after I got her I became ill and had to undergo treatment that left me too sick to play with her. I sat her on my desk where I could always see her, but my room is always very sunny... :c I didn't even realize she had yellowed so much until my second doll arrived. Other than that, she's holding up really well.

The others are a year old or less and haven't noticeably changed.

    3. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?
I've been in the hobby for over 10 years. I got my first BJD (SD Megu from Volks) end 2000/January 2001.

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc
I must confess that I was much more gentle in the beginning than I am now. I'm always amazed and a little ashamed when people have their dolls in cabinets away from light, etc. My gang is all over the place. There's a realpuki - Pupu - sitting in a bathtub on my dining room table, some in chairs on the floor of my livving room and bedroom, some on shelves, and some just sitting where I can see them to plan what I'm going to do next.

How many dolls have you got over the years?
Eek do I really have to give a number? Definitely over 30...

and the question that interests me the most:
How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?
My gang is fine. The BW have yellowed, but it's been an over all mellow yellowing like the way
antique ivory ages. I am totally fine with the yellowing as long as it is even. I do not have any
French resin, so I can't comment on that. I'm still totally interested in the hobby. When I think, oh this doll
can go, I start playing with it putting on a new wig, eyes, and voila, I'm hooked again.

    4. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?
I got my first BJD in 2005.

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc
Yes! I don't handle each one as much as I handled my first few BJDs. Obviously, since there are many more now, my attention is divided among them all. Plus, I handle them less in general anyway, since I don't do as many photostories and I don't change their clothes as much as I used to. However, I still treat them all the same way. They are all out of their boxes and sitting around my living room where I can see and handle them every day.

How many dolls have you got over the years?
I now have twenty nine, including a few floating heads (who are mostly alternate heads for existing characters) and my three Dollfie Dreams. I've sold approximately 13 full dolls.

How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?
My oldest BJD (SD13 Link) does seem to have more yellowing than my newer BJDs, but I am certain that if I took him apart and gave his body a good scrubbing he would look like new. His resin is in no way an objectionable color. His head got a new faceup a couple of years ago, and it looks almost like new too. None of my BJDs is body blushed, so I am sure any of their bodies could look like new again, and I am not as squeamish about getting new faceups for dolls as I used to be. (Though half of my BJDs still have their default faceups in excellent condition.) I have cleaned off enough heads and blushed bodies to know that resin can look sparkling brand new again, as long as the dolls haven't been overexposed to extreme light or heat (and mine haven't been since they've lived here).

    5. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?
This will be my 4th year in the Hobby. I started around October of 2008.

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc
Definitely. I've gotten a lot more familiar with the way the dolls "behave" you can "manhandle" them a little bit to get them to do what you want (I'm not talking about bashing them around, but being a little bit more forceful). They're sturdy objects, and (when made right) can take it.

How many dolls have you got over the years?
Oh man, I've owned way too many to remember tbh. I was a bit of a spur of the moment buyer in my first two years, and went a little crazy. Now I'm down to the ones I really wanted, and haven't really been buying as many, if any at all within the past few months.

How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?
I would say that all of my dolls have aged in their own ways. I like to keep them out on display, I don't keep them in their boxes, so they have yellowed over the years. My oldest doll is my DZ Mo-3 and he has yellowed, he was my first doll and I had carried him around in the Florida sun when I lived there, but he is still perfect too me. I don't mind yellowing, it just means the doll was previously owned. Now, if it's extensive yellowing that's a bit different, but when you have a doll that's a few years old, it's bound to happen regardless, that's just how the resin ages. Quality wise though, I wouldn't say my dolls have changed since the day I got them, they're just as sturdy as they were when I pulled them out of their boxes for the first time. :)

    6. How long have you been in the BJD hobby? since late 2005

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc

-- I started out with more fantasy/stylized dolls like from Luts, then started wanting more realistic dolls, then smaller fashiondoll sized bjds, then tinies, now I am back to fantasy but with more realistic features but just purchased two Luts delfs that I used to have.

How many dolls have you got over the years? wow alot my guess is anywhere from--

      60-75 but that's just a guess

and the question that interests me the most:

How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?

my oldes is a Delf Soony with modded eyes..she was my first resin head and she still looks great...no yellowing..though I do really coat them will with MSC UV CUT

    7. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?
I've loved the dolls for probably 6-8 years, but got my first in April 2008

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc
Yes. I started roleplaying my dolls and have stopped being "cheap" and get them the eyes and wig and clothes that really fit them instead of giving up what I really like in favor of saving a couple of bucks. I also role play them now, so they have much deeper stories and personalities. I've learned a LOT about faceups, sewing, stringing, blushing, modding, etc, so I feel I take much better care of them now than I did at first.

How many dolls have you got over the years?
HA! I can't even begin to tell you. My current list (both at home, in progress and planned) is at 30, but I've bought and sold a LOT over the years. I'd guess I've probably had close to 60 dolls coming through the house.

How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?
I don't have all of the dolls I've owned over the years, most have been sold and/or upgraded, but I have a few "old" ones:

AoD Chen in WS: was my very first doll. the character has been upgraded but I kept the old doll. He's yellowed, for sure, but it's a creamy yellow and it's even and I think he's really pretty. He has a few gouges and scratches, but no major damage. He's never been restrung, never needed it.

DZ Mo-2 head in WS: was my second doll, about to turn 4. I sold his body, but kept his head. His nose is damaged due to a fall, but otherwise, he's in great condition, except for severe yellowing due to a month-long visit to a heavy smoking household, where he was right in it with no protection

      RS Lu:
was my 5th doll. She's been modded but has no damage. She's very yellowed, but I actually really like it, since RS starts out paper white and now she matches my DZ/AoD boys. :)

    8. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?
-Well I got my first doll in 2009, but I was looking at dolls for many years before that.

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc
-Well, you learn a lot of new doll stuff when you get really into the hobby. So how you treat them kind of differently after a while when you realize how fragile they really are.

How many dolls have you got over the years?
-I have 3 and a floating head. Thought I'd have more by now. Lol.

and the question that interests me the most:
How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?
-My dolls are doing really good. My one doll has some yellowing, not too bad though, you can only tell if you really look at her or see the other parts of her that aren't yellow. But that was just me not knowing much about my dolls. And not know that just because it's not direct sunlight doesn't mean it wont make them yellow. Lol.

    9. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?
About 5 1/2 years. Kinda scary when I think about it! XD

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc
A lot has changed. Like when I first decided I was going to buy my first doll, I swore I wouldn't own any girls. Now I own 5 girls and 3 boys, with at least 2 more girls planned. But other than that I guess I'm more careful with my dolls? I don't take them everywhere with my like I use to, if I do they're wrapped up and packed away safely. I'm also a lot pickier about what they wear, I spend a lot of money on them so they should look good! Even if that means poking myself in the finger a million times while sewing for them!

How many dolls have you got over the years?
... Too many? I've had about 24 dolls come and go through the years, but right now I only have 9~

How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?
Spoiled rotten. XD As far as yellowing I can't really say any of mine are too bad. My oldest doll seems a bit creamier, but she certainly doesn't look horrid.

    10. How long have you been in the BJD hobby? About four and a half years.

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc I found myself a Volks addict, that was a big change since I didn't like the price tag associated with Volks enough to give them a chance, also didn't like the fact that most dolls were obtained only through the secondhand market. Now a days I feel really funny when I want a non-Volks, because it tends not to work out for me. It's also strange ordering direct from a company.

I also originally wanted mostly boy dolls, now I've learned that I just not a good care taker of boys. I prefer frills, ruffles, and lace!

How many dolls have you got over the years? I haven't a clue.

How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time? Most of my dolls have mellowed out with time, but some of them I try my hardest to fight the signs of aging. It isn't that I think the resin changing process is unattractive, I actually like the tone my Jun T is as time passes. I really like option parts and most option parts are lighter if I don't do something about the yellowing.

    11. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?

I can't actually remember ^^; I've had this username on the forums for seven years now, but before that I think I had another one, so 8+ years? Definitely on and off though, I've never sold all my dolls, but my interest definitely waxes and wanes.

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc

I've become a lot pickier. I no longer buy Dolls or accessories because they'll do and are reasonably priced. Now I set high standards and save for special dolls and items. I've learnt a few things about my personal tastes such as which Companies I do/don't like and which skin tones I favour.

How many dolls have you got over the years?

I have three dolls at the moment! I've had four in total, sold one. All my dolls are Volks LEs and FCS, mostly because I like having a group that photographs together nicely and can share the same clothes. I'm the sort of person who spends more on clothes etc. than dolls, which is why I have so few after all these years!

How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?

One of my dolls is from 2005, she's yellowed quite a bit compared to my two 2010 dolls. She is WS before UV Protect and has been kept in a very dark corner of my room for all those years. That said I have a theory that heat increases yellowing, and high summer temperatures are unavoidable in this part of the world. I still adore her, she has a creamy ivory colour which is warmer and more natural than my newer WS girls.

    12. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?
-I got my first doll 10 years ago, so I'd guess 11ish years.

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc
-Well, lets see, when I first got into BJDs, I though I'd only ever have one. Also, up until a year ago I didn't really bring my dolls out of the house. Part of that was due to worry over bringing them anywhere, the other part was not having friends in the area to get me and my dolls out and about! Doll friends IRL makes the hobby so much more fun!

My doll tastes have changed a lot since I first got into dolls. I thought I'd prefer larger dolls but now my Yo's are my favorites! (and I'm planning to eventually get an even smaller doll... and selling my big ones>.>)

How many dolls have you got over the years?
-Six! (yeah, just having one didn't quite work out..)

How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?
-They are doing great. My older two dolls have some yellowing, but nothing severe and it's really even so it doesn't bother me. Other than that, I've needed to tighten strings and that's about it.

    13. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?
Since 2006. I created my DOA account probably a couple of months after discovering BJD

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc
I play with them less compared to when I got my first three (all MSD). But I still love hugging my first SD, my Breakaway. I suppose the biggest difference is I now enjoy looking at them more than playing with them necessarily, but I still do enjoy taking them out and appreciating them.

In terms of taste, I haven't really changed at all. Began with loving Cerberus Project dolls and still like them most out of all companies now. Never got into the whole realistic trend.

I am, however, much less interested in buying random clothes and wigs. I think I'm the type who prefers having lots of dolls of specific characters rather than spending money buying lots of pretty clothing :3

How many dolls have you got over the years?
A lot (at this point, a bit too many for me to handle.) Over 15 including floating heads.

How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?

My Breakaway was always slightly "beauty green" when I got him.

The first two WS MSD I bought have definitely yellowed over the years, but if my first doll, a Tan Dollzone MSD has, I haven't really noticed. I keep all my dolls out of direct or indirect sunshine, and they are in dark rooms for the most part.

    14. How long have you been in the BJD hobby? Almost 6 years

Did anything change? Like the way you treat your dolls, etc
I quit making clothes for mine. I can buy from others with a lot less irritation . I still pretty much treat them the same. They live on a shelf. Go out for photos occasionally.

How many dolls have you got over the years?
The most I've ever had at one time was 35. But I purchased well over 100 over the years (I keep a database of all the dolls I've had). My tastes change, and I get bored. My revolving door is rather notorious.

And the question that interests me the most:
How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?

Quinn (my Pipos Baha) is almost 6 years old. He's yellowed a bit, but it's not that bad if you don't look inside his head.
But my bedroom (where they live) is very dark, as the windows were painted over many, many years ago. And I never bothered to strip them. I think this helps keep them from yellowing a lot.

    15. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?
I joined DoA in January of 2010, so I guess this is my 3rd year anniversary :P

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc
After the nervous thrill of my first couple dolls, I find myself a lot more confident when handling them. I was terrified of touching them with my bare hands before, terrified of stringing, sueding, switching eyes, messing up wigs, etc. I can handle pretty much all of that now, and I can determine if I will like a doll pretty much the moment I open the box.

How many dolls have you got over the years?
Probably close to 30 total purchased dolls, but I've sold a number of them that I didn't bond with or that I wanted to re-shell into a different sculpt. Right now I have 20, which includes my micro-BJDs from Dream High Studio and my Wong kitty from Camelia Dynasty, which I personally feel are a bit more like expensive accessories than full dolls since they don't wear clothes, wigs, or real characters, and just have the eyes they came with since nothing else fits.

How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?
My oldest piece of resin is probably my Soom MD Cuprit Black Frost from 2008. I noticed that her cream white skintone is not even close to paper white anymore. It's definitely mellowed into a warmer tone. It's very even though, since I had purchased her from someone that never took her out of the box and I keep her hidden away in a dark cabinet. I have a Soom MD Heliot head that is pretty much the exact same skintone. I also have an original Luts Minifee Shushu elf, but I have no idea what their skintone originally was supposed to look like. She's just a definitely more yellow tone that my modern Fairyland minifees. The worst sign of aging that any of my dolls suffer is how slack their stringing has become. Restringing, sueding and wiring is required for pretty much all of them at this point.

    16. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?
This is my 8th year! I got my first doll in the fall of 2005.

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc
I'm less worried about my dolls now. I still take very careful care of them, but I know that virtually anything can be fixed with patience and the right tools. I photograph them less. I take more time in acquiring the perfect clothes instead of grabbing something purely because it's affordable. Unfortunately, I also paint and make clothes less often now; I do hope to change that, now that I have an airbrush, and plan to put more effort into practicing and improving.

How many dolls have you got over the years?
I now own the most I've ever had (6 and a head), and I've only sold two over the years. Unfortunately, those two and the now the bodiless head have all been efforts to represent just one character! He's been very troublesome. But I think about a purchase for months, and sometimes years, before making the commitment to buy. I'm not afraid of selling, but I prefer to avoid wasting my time or money on something I don't truly and completely adore having.

How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?
My very first doll is still looking pretty fine! She's definitely yellowed, but I find the color appealing. What I really notice about her is the enormous improvements that have been made in sculpting and jointing across the board. When I bought my Souldoll Clara, she was in the middle of the pack as far as posability and general quality of sculpt, but now I fear she would be regarded as a very poorly designed doll. Her face is still lovely, and I've never regretted buying or keeping her, but I'm sad that she doesn't see any of the benefit of the collective innovations in this hobby.

But then again, I love playing with my newer dolls and their impossible, incredible joints!

    17. In the hobby? Just a year.
But I researched what I wanted and admired them for 10 years. I collected doll sized toys and clothes and made serious plans that have come into fruition.

    18. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?
Got my first doll in late 2008

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc
I don't change their clothes as often as I used to, but I think that has more to do with the number of dolls I now have. It was much easier to frequently change outfits when I had only 2 or 3 as opposed to the 21 now. I also take less photos as I just don't have the time. I wish I did but other obligations keep me busy.

How many dolls have you got over the years?
I have 21 and am going to be purchasing another soon. I have not sold any dolls (nor plan to).

How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?
They haven't really changed. I've done the basic stuff of re-stringing and the occasional time or two with the business end of a Mr. Clean magic eraser, but aside from just general maintenance, that's it. But, for the most part my dolls stay in their boxes unless I'm doing something with them as I don't have the space to display them and I have idiot cat who thinks several wigs are his toys so the safest place for them is in their boxes.

    19. Oh Jeez...I got into this with Lugi-Moo in..late 2005 early 2006? I was 17 then. So...I guess 7 years now? I've been away from the hobby for a while because college got really intense, and my job even more so.

A lot of things changed for me. When I first got into the hobby, the community was a lot smaller. There weren't quite as many doll companies. The only big ones I was really aware of were Volks, Luts (luts started selling other company dolls through their website which is how I found out about other companies). I was also a lot younger and was more content with my 3rd hand slightly damaged dolls and growing collection of heads.

Coming back into the hobby is a bit weird for me. I feel like the community got big, and a lot of what could have been said/discussed/argued about dolls seemed to have been said/discussed/argued about. There are way more companies now (I went to the philly meetup this morning and could barely recognize any of the doll molds), and the ones i was familiar with are now changing styles and artists and everything!

Over the years I have 3 completed dolls, 3 floating heads, and I'm currently waiting for my Pukifee to arrive :3

My dolls are very much worse for ware. My white skinned dolls are yellow, my first doll looks rather dirty and crusty, and they all need clothes, new faceups, everything! I feel like I have to start from scratch with all of them @___@

    20. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?
My first experience with the hobby was ~2005, but I only really got active after getting my first doll in 2007.

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc
I'm a lot more careful now than I was! One of my WS dolls yellowed a lot from being too close to a window, and now I'm a little more paranoid about it. Most of my dolls are either carefully away from windows, or live in their boxes when I'm not photographing them.

How many dolls have you got over the years?
I currently have... five MSD sized dolls, one on the way, one floating head, and three SD sized dolls.

How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?
Aside from Oracle, most of my dolls haven't yellowed very much, if at all. It's not noticeable on her sister (my only other WS--they're both from 2008). I haven't seen other WS Dollzone dolls recently to compare with, though. I think my older girls are doing quite well! I'm not actually sure how old my oldest boy is, as I'm not his first owner, but he's in fairly good condition, too. They could probably all use restringing.
