In a hobby for longer than 4 years? How is it going?

Mar 15, 2011

    1. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?
Since July 2008, so over 5 years now.

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc
Not much. Maybe more buying :) I still keep them all in their boxes. Have no time to really play (busy caring for 3 small kids) and no space to display.

How many dolls have you got over the years?
Right now i have 168 + 17 on their way. I have sold a few throughout the 5 years but have brought way more then i sold.

How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?
Sofar i haven't seen much yellowing in my dolls. This can be because they all are still in their boxes since purchase.

    2. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?
Saw my first BJD in late 2003, signed up on DOA in Feb. 2005, and bought my first doll in summer 2005. Wow. Has it been that long already?

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc.
I go through phases, where I'm not as intensely into the hobby at some times and near obsessed at others. I had almost a year-long lull where I rarely visited DOA or did anything with my dolls, but I shook that off and am getting back into the game again. The hobby as a whole has changed a LOT. But then, that's to be expected. Nothing ever remains the same, and the more people involved, the greater number of catalysts and/or chances for change. It's been growing so fast in recent years. There's so many new faces here, and so many new companies!

How many dolls have you got over the years?
Seven. I'm very, very conservative with my doll buying. I'll study company pics and owner pics in great detail, try to get a feel for all the aspects of a doll, see if there are any quirks I will end up disliking. Dolls move on and off my wishlist all the time. What I'm really waiting for is the "click." Where I just know that the doll is the one, that it is the perfect sculpt for what I have in mind. Yes, I know that I can resell a doll if it doesn't work out. But I'd hate to do so. I'd rather take the time before purchasing to be sure.

How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?
They vary, but overall really well. Hannah has yellowed the most, with Mattie running second. But neither doll is banana yellow or anything. Matter of fact, I think that Mattie has yellowed to a lovely cream color. It's very subtle. Surprisingly, Chulyen, one of my first, has really held up well. He has little to no yellowing that I can tell. He really needs to be restrung, but that's more my laziness then any fault of his.

    3. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?
      Nearly seven years

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc
At first, I planned on having just the one doll as a representation of my RPG characters... swap out the eyes and wig and tada. That did not last long at all. :sweat

At first I was only interested in SD sized dolls, and I got a couple of super tiny ones. Now I have YO sized and MSD sized ones as well!

How many dolls have you got over the years?
11 (number 12 in on layaway at the moment), and one head that still needs a body. I have yet to sell a doll and do not have plans of doing so.

How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?
Most of my dolls are holding up great! My oldest ones that I can date (from late 2006) have mellowed a bit (especially my WS girl), but they still look great.

Strangely my Ai from 2010 (who I have not treated any differently than any of my other dolls) has yellowed crazy quick. I still love her, but I think Soom had a bad batch of resin or something.

Some of my secondhand dolls though were not so lucky with their previous owners. Two of them look like the poor dears where left sitting in sleeveless dresses and not moved for years. One has uneven yellowing to the point the one side of the arms and legs does not match the other. I am not sure how old she is... I think she may be older than my first doll. A bit of blushing when I have the time and the weather cooperates will fix most of it though. :)

    4. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?

Since 2006 I think? My first doll arrived in 2007.

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc

I think I'm more careful now! And they don't get carried around outside except for doll related things. My taste in dolls has changed a little too.

How many dolls have you got over the years?

Uhhhhh, including sold/traded, 13. What I own right now, ten.

How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?

The oldest two have some yellowing, and one that was bright green has mellowed a bit. First doll had a few scratches on her body but her faceup is still lovely. Only one of my dolls has ever broken while I had them, and it was just a finger.

    5. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?
Started looking at them seriously around February 2008, got my first (Puki Cupid) in August! So 5 years and going strong!

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc
I used to take my puki with me everywhere! My dolls mostly stay at home now, except for meets and the occasional outdoors photoshoot. I originally had planned to get a boy and girl doll of each size and open a clothing commission shop! XD I've learned I like girl dolls better than boys; and don't really enjoy sewing teeny-tiny clothes (sewing sleeves can still make me rage face)! I love my tiny dolls, but I've come to also like bigger dolls now too! :3

How many dolls have you got over the years?
Oh erhm... My current doll family is about 32~:sweat A few have moved on and a few more a planning to travel, but others are coming home to take their place.

and the question that interests me the most:
How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?
My oldest dolls (Puki Cupid, LTF Ante, TG Glati, MNF Luka) have all yellowed heavily, but it's even and not an unsightly colour. No damages really, despite me being a newbie and shoving some of them in handbags and purses without padding, or posing them precariously; and two of them still have their default faces completely intact! There are some signs of 'wear and tear' like their elastics might be a little loose or their resin is smooth and just a little shiny from me playing with and touching them so often; but they're all very well looked after! :3

    6. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?
Ooh boy, well my account says '07, but I've been in the hobby prior to then...It's been a long time...a very long time...

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc
      Nothing has changed. I did a lot of research before joining the hobby so I knew what I was getting into. I just don't really wash them as often as I used to. ^^;

How many dolls have you got over the years?
Currently I'm at 9. I'm awaiting number nine's arrival. I plan on stopping at 10. Who knows though...

and the question that interests me the most:
How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?

My dolls are all holding up beautifully. My oldest, Shoji, still has his original face-up because I take very good care of their face-ups. They have changed color slightly over the years but that comes with the territory.

    7. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?
joined the forum in january 2009 but only got my first doll several months later.

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc
yes. before I brought my doll everywhere with me. it was really precious to me. but now I forget them in my closet and don't play with them for months :sweat
then again, I was 14 when I got my first doll. now I'm an adult *cough*notreally*cough* I pay taxes and stuff.

How many dolls have you got over the years?
almost 30 (but only 2-5 at the same time)

How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?
      most of the dolls I've had only stayed for a few months so I can't really answer ^^;
though I've got a used doll that was 8 year old when I got it. it was reeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaallly yellowed. but I don't know what kind of usage it had before. maybe the owner left it sitting on shelf at the mercy or sunshine and artificial light... *shrug* I've also had 2 Breakaways from 2005, so they were 5-6 year olds when they got to me, the white one was still very white and the NS one had noticeable yellowing but it was still a very lovely colour :)

    8. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?
4 years this past March :)

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc
Not really. I've had to shuffle storage around more as I've got more dolls. Other than that, my latest doll is treated more or less like my first doll was when she first arrived.

How many dolls have you got over the years?
      I have, as of today:

8 Super Gem bodies (with two more incoming), which are shared between 18 heads (with 3 more incoming)
      2 Soom Rosette dolls
4 Teenie Gem Bodies, which are shared between 6 heads.
1 Mini Gem fairy head (which has no body yet)
10 pairs of horns (with another pair incoming)
12 pairs of fantasy hands (with two pairs incoming)
16 pairs of fantasy legs (with two more pairs incoming)
10 other fantasy parts - ears, wings, masks, etc (with another one incoming)

I love adding new heads and fantasy parts to my collection :aheartbea

How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?
Most of them are holding up very well. My oldest dolls have mellowed to a light creamy colour, but they all still look white when compared to my normal or tan dolls. The yellowing is only really noticeable when compared to more recently cast white skin dolls. I've had no broken fingers, no face-up scuffs or marks, no stringing mishaps or anything like that. Aside from minor yellowing, each doll in my collection is just as perfect as when I bought it :)

    9. I've been in the hobby for quite a few years -- 8(?) since I started research, 6(?) since I bought my first but I don't think I've yet broken the 20+ dolls mark. I have nine currently, and I've owned probably 15 or 16 over time.
The way I collect my dolls has changed, and the process for when I decide to add one to my collection. I have a ritual now. ;)
As for yellowing... ugh. Yes. So much yellow. Mostly on my first resin doll, who has endured all the trials of my love. I take more precaution now, but it's too late for my KDF Bory ;-; So much yellowing!
My other ones seem to be doing just fine, though.

    10. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?
As of this post, I've been a member of this forum for ~5.5 years, and I've been interested in BJDs for ~7years before joining DoA. I bought my first doll in mid-2009, about a year after joining.

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc
I am more aware of which dolls I actually want to own, as opposed to which dolls I simply like to admire from afar. This also means I'm much more careful (slower) about buying a doll. I know now that I am more likely to play with my cheaper dolls (though I would never call a $200-300 doll cheap) and that MSD sizes work best for me.

However, I find that I also tend to be less anxious about their conditions. My first dolls rarely spent time out of their boxes, whereas my current collection is mainly housed in a display cabinet (in a mostly dark corner of my workroom). It gives me great joy to be able to see them, and I find I play with them more this way. Being able to let go of my worries took a while, though.

How many dolls have you got over the years?
I have currently 7 dolls (though one is a just a resin head on an ABS plastic body (off-topic) and the other is an (also) off-topic jointed cat), but I have owned at least twice that many over the years, ranging from tiny Brownie dolls to Dollshes.

I haven't bought a new doll in over a year, now, and my focus has been on their clothes recently. I think this trend will probably continue into the future.

How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?
I feel that my oldest doll (a Custom House Uri from late 2009) must definitely have yellowed (to Dollzone's normal yellow tone), but I don't see any evidence of uneven yellowing, so I can't say how much it's yellowed. Her elastic probably needs to be changed and tightened, but otherwise she's doing great. Still has her flawless original face-up and all that. My cat has a slight chip near its cornea. Otherwise, all my other dolls are only 3-4 years old and have suffered no damage.

    11. I have been collecting dolls, in general, for about 30 some years. I am 70 yrs young and love my dolls just like I did when I first started out. It has been in the last few years that I have been collecting BJDs. I have no idea how many dolls I have. I have never sold any, not a one. They are taking over my basement. I haven't room to display them all. I have found that it is better to rotate them. Especially around the holidays. I love them dearly, and find myself talking to them. I haven't had BJDs long enough for them to yellow. I find the whole idea of collecting dolls very educational. I enjoy costuming. Have not got up the nerve to get a face up. What if I don'[t like it? I must have hundreds of dolls. It is a wonderful hobby.

    12. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?
I've known about BJDs since early 2005 so, almost 9 years. o,O

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc
Only thing that changed is my taste in dolls but that's expected. I'm into more realistic dolls now. I also never thought I would own female dolls but now I have two and two on the way and my grail doll is female too. Go figure.

How many dolls have you got over the years?
I currently own 18 dolls though I took two of them off the list because I'll most likely be selling them. I also have two on the way. So total is still 18 dolls.

How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time
I keep my dolls in their boxes or drawers and away from sunlight so I haven't dealt with a lot of yellowing. Except my WS IH SooRi, which is my first BJD and almost eight years old. He yellowed quite a bit but its even so... Doesn't look ugly. Color difference is also visible between my older and newer Volks dolls but that's also because Volks changed their resin color... Overall, I don't have any problems with yellowing.

    13. I've been in the BJD hobby for about 7 years now & nothing has really changed for me except I'm much more picky in the dolls I buy. I've gotten to the point where most dolls don't appeal to me, though that's not really the right way to put it. It's usually that they're similar enough to a doll that I already have so the temptation isn't there anymore. I've definitely cut down on the number of dolls I buy.
I don't even want to think about how many dolls I've had. Currently I'm running in the 40s, not counting the few I have packed away to sell.
While there has been some yellowing, I don't find it displeasing. Mostly it is even & I don't really notice it unless I'm ready to sell. My tan dolls tend to remain their original color the best while the yellowing is most easily seen on the WS dolls. Even my French resin dolls, who tend more to this problem than others, seem to turn a lovely peachy golden color.

    14. This is such a great thread for a newbie like myself to read through :) It's so nice seeing people still in the hobby after 4+ years!

    15. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?
About 8 years since I saw the 1st BJD and was interested in them. I bought my 1st doll in February 2008 though.

Did anything change? Like the way you treat your dolls, etc
My taste changed. I like more realistic dolls and faceups with smaller heads.

How many dolls have you got over the years?
I have 18 dolls right now counting incoming, but over the years I might have bought and sold twice or more that amount. I can't remember, I sold many.

How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time

Most my dolls right now are under 2 years old. I only have one that I bought in 2008 (made in 2007). He is yellowy, and unevenly so. I don't take him out that often but I guess it's inevitable.

    16. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?

I have been collecting dolls for many years. I got into ABJDs almost 7 years ago.

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc

I can't see anything has changed in how I treat them. I still treat them like dolls (lol).

How many dolls have you got over the years?

I think I have passed 120 now. I'd have to go count. I tend to have a liberal revolving door policy.

And the question that interests me the most:
How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?

My oldest is over 6 years old (Pipos Baha. I bought him before Pipos had their own website).
He has yellowed a bit. More like a creamy color from the stark white he started out as.

    17. I have been a member of doa and I have known about bjds for a year and a bit. So I'm not really into the hobby as I don't have my first doll yet (does that make sense?)... but I hope to get her soon!

    18. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?

Five years, yay! That's a long time really.

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc

Things did change, indeed. I'm better at, like, everything nowadays. Now i think my style of customising improved the most. But that is due to my own changes through these years. However, my way of handling doll has always been accurate right from the start. I've always been gentle as hell.

How many dolls have you got over the years?

It's so weird to me to see people owning, like, 20+ dolls... I just can't imagine myself having that much. I only got 3 complete dolls and one head awaiting for my funds to be raised for his body...

and the question that interests me the most:
How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?

Actually they're pretty fine! No, like, really severe yellowing, nothing else really... They went a bit yellow, ofcourse, all of them do it, but nothing crucial, nothing bad ever happened because of their age. (Happy to say nothing bad ever happened at all.) Though i'm a little nervous how it'd be going. Now it's 5 years, but it'll be 10, 15 years and i'm scared for what could happen...

    19. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?
It was around 2005/6 so its almost ten years.

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc
There are much more companies around, and much more options for collectors with small budgets. It used to be a very expensive hobby, it still is just not so much as before.
The only bad thing I can think of is the change in shipping regulations, so now I need to pay double shipping from South Korea...
When I started most minis where meant to be children, but now mature minis are really popular.
I don't think anything changed about how I treat my dolls. I hope it will, I'm currently planning to buy a glass cabinet do display them. I don't really have a place to show them so they usually stay in their boxes or occasionally on a shelf.

How many dolls have you got over the years?
Some are just heads at the moment, I never sold any. I have 7 full dolls and three heads, two of which I already got a body for so they'll be whole soon. :)

How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?
My very first doll (bought in 2008) had a bit of even yellowing, so I gave her a good sanding and sent her to get body blushed and sealed.
My Serendipity Noel (probably my oldest since they stopped production in 2006) is aging wonderfully, her color mellowed and got creamier but you can't call her yellow. I only know she's yellowed because if you look closely to her belly you can see its pinker than the rest of her body. I probably will need to restring her though, I noticed her legs got really floppy.
My Narsha is about as old as her, her skintone is darker than most of my other dolls. She's peachy pink, I personally think it looks lovely. I have no way to tell if she's yellowed because I don't own other Dollmore dolls and she was already like that when I got her, I think I'm her third owner.

    20. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?
As of right now (February 2015), it's been almost dead-on seven years. My first doll was ordered in February 2008.

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc
Plenty has changed. Brands I initially perceived as "too expensive" or "not fitting" have somehow found a home in my collection. Ideas I originally dismissed as "not something I want to do" have been well and truly done. I've seen companies come and go; options, sculpts, and entire lines emerge and vanish; trends change with time. I spent a couple of years "out" of the hobby, as well, and really noticed a lot of changes when I stepped back in, since I hadn't been seeing them happen gradually during that time.

How many dolls have you got over the years?
At current, I have 27 full dolls, one floating head, and one spare body at home, with two more waiting to ship. I have also sold two floating heads, one spare body, and one full doll, none of which are included in the current count.

How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?
None of the ones I have owned the entire time have experienced any severe yellowing. The three WS/CW resin ones appear to have mellowed a fair amount, as I feel like they were more paper white when I first got them, but it's very even and natural-looking, a creamy color rather than "yellow." One of the secondhand dolls does have some lingering uneven yellowing (I sanded away most, but couldn't sand away all without losing sculpt definition), but it's currently concealed with blushing. All the original group of dolls are holding up quite nicely, and the only problem with the passage of time is that they are all beginning to need to be restrung.
