In a hobby for longer than 4 years? How is it going?

Mar 15, 2011

    1. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?
I've been in the hobby for five years, but I've been oogling pictures since 2004.

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc
I used to be super paranoid about anything happening to my dolls, then I managed to chip my boys wrist while I was restringing him. After crying for like 10 minutes, I pulled myself and my boy back together. I've been a lot more lax with them ever since. If they get scuffed or chipped it just adds character to them.

How many dolls have you got over the years?
I've got four, but wish I could get a few more.

How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?
They've spent more time in their boxes than I'd like, but my oldest girl has probably yellowed? I can't really tell since she was about 4 years old when I got her. No one really has any damage or staining.

    2. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?
      Seven years now.

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc
I do treat them differently now. Up through my sixth, I played with them all the time, photographed them a lot, made photostories, remembered and celebrated their birthdays... When I got my 4th, he came with a second head which I decided would need a body. Until I bought one for it, I actually traded the heads out every day.
Now they still get attention, but it's much more passive.

How many dolls have you got over the years?

Thirty-four, one on the way. I've never sold one.

How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?
Fine, actually. My first two have yellowed, but not horribly. Nobody's been majorly damaged (no more than a broken finger, knock on wood).

    3. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?

seven years! I was 17 when I got my first doll, and now I'm 25, I was into them for a while and like my profile says I joined DOA in 2004

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc

I dont carry them around anymore, keep them in the dar so they wont yellow and stuff, and have less time to play but I still like them a lot. I also have really gotten out of the community of it,which is something im trying to get back into.

How many dolls have you got over the years?

5 that ive kept, I had two others that ive sold because they just werent my thing.

and the question that interests me the most:
How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?

Some are yellower then others but I dont ever notice. My 2nd doll I ever bought(volks school c on magical micheal body) is the yellowest, but he was exposed to a lot of sun in the first few years. Its still not that noticable.

    4. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?
I bought my first doll in 2006...but I was window shopping in 2004.

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc
Yes - I no longer see them as fragile things that will break if looked at wrong. In the beginning I orderd w/company faceups to avoid a faceless doll, but that doesn't bother me anymore and I'd rather order blank and let someone I admire do a faceup vs paying for a default I may not like. I've gotten over my fear of messing up a doll by attempting my own modifications.

How many dolls have you got over the years?
      I currently have:
8 + a floating head in my collection
      2 on order
4 looking for a new home
      and I've sold 8 dolls

How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?
I still have my first doll, a Serendipity Valencia. He has gotten creamier vs yellow with age. He still looks pale compared to my fleshtone dolls. His default faceup lasted 4 years and was in good condition when I had it redone to fit his developing character. Other then 2 chips in his resin, he is holding up great. The only dolls that have had major color changes are my white skin dolls - but they've evenly changed. I have discovered I don't really like WS dolls for various reasons. Any problems I've had w/staining on any of my dolls was resolved w/gentle cleaning. We've had a few falls, but no major damage to anyone. My only complaint is all the resin tend to go through a character development and growth phase so I'm always looking to upgrade eyes, wigs or clothing for someone in the collection.

    5. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?
I've been into BJDs since 2007.

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc
I treat them a lot more carefully now. They don't see much light and I take more care when handling them.

How many dolls have you got over the years?
Let's see.. 7 and a floating head, all of which I sold because I didn't like the hobby much anymore. Then about half a year ago I decided to get back one of the molds I had previously owned. So yeah the ball started rolling again.

How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?
Well, this one I can't really answer, the only doll I currently have is only about 2 months old. ;)

    6. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?
I've been in it for about 8 years and a half.

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc

I definitely got more manly with my dolls! XD I also learned how to spend a lot more money on a single doll... *sigh*

How many dolls have you got over the years?

I can't recall all of them, but I bought a little over 20, and still have 9+extra non-BJD dolls at the moment.

How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?

My first BJD is still with me and she's as yellow as a canary! But I still love her so much. The others also are pretty yellowed, since I love to play with them and take pictures frequently. But they look better than ever, and really, I was so unsure of getting a BJD when I first entered this hobby thinking that dolls would yellow quickly and become "unusable." But now I know that was just a silly worry. :) They don't yellow as fast as you think, and as long as you use proper equipments for their face-ups and etc., they will be the same for a long, long time.
If you think your dolls have yellowed/damaged too much it's always good to get new ones. I've done it with one of my dolls even though he was a LE, because he was damaged too much. I replaced him with the same type, and although I was worried that I would come to missing the old head of him, he slowly grew on me again. This happens a lot, I think, with pale-skinned BJDs, for the discoloration issue. A friend of mine had a Volks white-skinned FCS, and she loved him so much and left him outside a lot that he turned into, I quote, "Shrek." So she placed a paid-exchange of the whole body at Volks, and when he came back we all were so happy. One downside of it is that not all companies have exchange system, and some dolls cannot be exchanged when they are discontinued.

    7. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?
first found out about them in 2004/5 and i got my first one 2006

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc
Ive pretty much treated my dolls all the same. I know what they can handle, etc.
My tastes in dolls had changed alot, which is why i kept selling them and getting new ones lol.

How many dolls have you got over the years?
ive owned a total of 10. Ive sold all of those and now i have 1 ordered.
i was a could only have 1-2 at a time so ive had to sell them to get any new ones.
And my taste kept changing over the years.
I plan to get 1 or 2 more in the future. (Unoa lusis and a volks)

How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?
None of my dolls ive had, has ever yellowed, broken, etc.
Hopefully that will stay true in the future and i didnt just jinx myself xD

    8. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?
I got my first bjd on September 1, 2004 after spending a summer deciding which one to get. Easy to remember...I was in bed recovering after I got my wisdom teeth removed! lol

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc
At first, I was very careful. Then I realized they were a lot tougher...and then finally I broke a finger, so I became more careful again, hahaha. I think I never really got over that, but over the years I definitely learned what they can and can't do.

I started closing the blinds every time I leave my room. It like a reflex now, the same as checking the stove or something. I don't want some ray of sunshine to land on my dolls...but really, if I spend all day in my room, I would leave the blinds open. I think I just don't like unsupervised light, haha.

How many dolls have you got over the years?
It's hard to say, I swap heads and bodies a lot. At least 10 different dolls.

How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?
I know my dolls have yellowed. But I don't know how bad it is these days. The last time I had brand new resin was maybe 2006? I don't know...I buy a lot of second-hand dolls.

But really, I can't tell if I look at just my dolls. They look fine. Their skin is still paler and less yellow than mine (I'm East Asian). It would only a problem if I decide to get a new head or body at this point.

    9. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?
      Since late 2005.

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc
My dolls all still have names and at least basic characters attached to them, but I'm much less interested in that part of the hobby than I used to be. I also photograph them far less than I did in the beginning. Mostly though, I've found myself losing patience with many aspects of "the fandom", and as a result I'm a lot less inclined to deal with fellow owners who annoy me. I don't cut people more slack than usual anymore JUST because they're doll owners.

How many dolls have you got over the years?
I have a large collection (They're all listed on my profile, if you're really curious-) and looking at them now, it's a little surprising how many of the dolls I've bought over the years are still here. I sold most of my white resin CP dolls a couple of years ago, as well as my Hound, most of my MiniFees, both of my Anthros and several of my smaller dolls... But by and large, the core of my crew has remained the same.

How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?
Reasonably well for their age... My first pair (Harumatsu & Tien Jen, NS CP Delfs from January 2006) are still in excellent shape. They even have their original face-ups. My five oldest dolls (A trio of pre-UV Protect Volks tenshis; a first-release SeiRei Sakaki and a pair of KoTenshi Tsubakis, along with a pair of NS CP Elf Shiwoos-) are also doing well, in spite of their age and multiple owners. Like Harumatsu & Jen, the Volks dolls still have their original face-ups... Though that may change soon. Face-up standards have changed a lot since they were done.

I have to admit, though, the reason I got rid of most of the CP beauty whites I used to own was because I really disliked the shade their resin seemed to be turning. I try to take good care of my dolls, but even protecting them from as much light and heat as I could didn't seem to slow down the yellowing (or greening, in some cases-) of those dolls. In the end, I kept the few I was most attached to and sold the rest on, swearing I'd never buy another BW again.

So far, I've mostly stuck to that vow... With only two exceptions (Galen, my white Volks F-33, and Khalais, my Emerald King Chalco), everyone added to the collection since "The Great BW Purge of 2009" has been NS or Tanned.

    10. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?

5 years :D I got my first doll, DOD H.Ducan last August 2007

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc

A lot, my personal preference for dolls I want to get etc....
But I always treat them the same way I got them for the first time :D

How many dolls have you got over the years?

Right now I have 8 full dolls and some floating heads :D Hopefully I can complete them before the year ends.

and the question that interests me the most:
How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?

I take care my dolls very carefully, I handle them with caution and from time to time I give them a complete bath :D As of now none of them got severe damage. As for the yellowing, I have found a way to minimize it :D

      Thank you !

    11. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?
I've been a member on DOA for 7 years, I was looking at doll sites four months before that.

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc
I noticed my tastes changed a lot. I used to prefer anime-ish dolls and now I like more realistic dolls. Their clothes went from punk and Gothic to Victorian. The sizes of my dolls are bigger than I thought I would ever like (I started with a DOC and now I'm ordering a Lusion doll).

How many dolls have you got over the years?
That's a hard one since I've sold a lot of them. Maybe 13 different molds over the years? I currently have 5 and plan for 3 more in my immediate future.

How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?
I keep my dolls in the best environment I can to keep them dust free and out of any sunlight. So far I haven't noticed any yellowing but it is hard to tell when you don't purchase new dolls on a regular basis. Basically they are doen fantastic. No faceup issues or chipping around joints or anything from 'play'.

    12. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?
been wanting a doll since 2004 but didn't get one until 2008.
Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc
i'm not super worried about breaking them anymore.
How many dolls have you got over the years?
12-ish i can't remember what the exact number is.
How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?
no yellowing issues or any severe damage, they're pretty sturdy ^^

    13. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?

      About four years now!

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc

In the beginning, I bought my doll a lot of stuff; new clothes, new wigs, new eyes... I liked to tweak his look to get it just right. However, now I rarely purchase anything new. Not because I'm completely happy with him, but mostly because the novelty wore off.

I took a little break from the hobby for a while, not from my doll per say, but from the community and the newsgroups and all that. I did this because I had some real life things come up (an unexpected move due to a flood, for instance), I changed jobs, went back to school for a second degree... I didn't have a lot of expendable income. I found myself drawn back into some other hobbies and those took up a lot of my time and extra cash.

But I'm back now. I will say I feel very overwhelmed. There's so much that is new, I have no idea where to start now. It's like I'm a newbie again (not that I was ever an expert). My taste did change, however. I find myself less interested in my male doll and wanting a female instead. This may be due to the fact that I've taken up sewing and I have more interest in making and designing clothes for girls.

How many dolls have you got over the years?

One complete one. I got him a new head shortly after buying him, one I was happier with. I also have a few floating heads.

How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?

Just fine! But he stays in his box when I'm not actively engaging him. I'm very careful about his resin discoloring so I make sure to keep my doll stored. He lives comfortably on top of my bookshelf in a box where the sun, and my cats, can't get him.

    14. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?

Since 2005, when I got my first BJD directly to Sato, I wanted first a FCS but I had a little panic finally I took a SD13 Megu. But I know about them since 2000 or 2001 after reading an article in the Barbie Bazarre.
I went many times to Volks but I thought they were just a dream, too expensive for me.

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc

Not really, they are still near me , on my desk, I can see them , touch , change etc them when I want.

How many dolls have you got over the years?
In all???I have less than 20 dolls all from Puki to Unoss. I sold some to buy others, so my number now doesn't change.

How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?
I think a little yellow, but they stay on shadow, so rather no change.
When I put new hand to my oldest Yo SD , the difference was so little, so I'm happy, I take care well of them.
I prefer don't speak about the Yellow Megu of my mother, o____0
She creates outfits so she used to leave her dolls on the table , naked, just in front of a big window, T___T
The Lusis and Megu are lost forever but I saved the Noel and the model doll.
Now she understood her mistake and she protects them.

    16. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?
I joined the forum in 2006, so it's 5 years for me since I'm an 'official' member. ^^

Did anything change? Like the way you treat your dolls, etc
After I got my first boy, I was involved in the hobby almost 24/7. Especially after I got home enough characters to start making photostories, which I did almost weekly. I sewed a LOT for them, made wigs, did a face-up at least once a month, checked all the forums daily etc.
Now that I've been into the hobby a bit longer (and attending university), I have less time to spend on my dolls. They are more in their drawer underneath my bed than they are on my bed or lap, but I'm fine with it, actually. I don't have to play with my dolls every day in order to still enjoy them.

How many dolls have you got over the years?
The most dolls I ever had at one point were 5 MSD's and a floating body, now I have 4 MSD's, 1 SD and a floating head. My wild plans of getting lots of dolls certainly haven't come true, and I do sometimes feel a bit jealous of new member who have 'accomplished' more dolls in one year than I did in five, but that is how it goes. I don't have enough time for more dolls than I have right now, anyway.

How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?
My first doll I got in 2007, and he was made in 2005 so already yellowed. He has turned a deep, golden colour over the years which I'm fine with. I do notice he has more chips and scratches than the others, but I'm not planning on selling him so it's fine that the signs of being loved are showing through xD

    17. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?
Since early 2008, so coming up to four years. (:
Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc
I have more disposable income to spend on them now. :P Sadly less free time to spend with them though.
How many dolls have you got over the years?
I have six dolls at home, one on the way, and saving for one right now. xD; I have got two a year so far... :P
How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?
      My dolls are doing very well. : D None of them have noticeable yellowing. But I never let them sit in the sun except for photoshoots. One has a slighting smudged faceup that probably needs redoing... And one has a wig stain. But I clean my boys every couple of months to yet rid of any stains, dust, greasy etc. Plus the resin feels so much nicer when it's clean... :P I also do a big wash of their clothes twice a year because they seem to attract my cat's fur. - -;

Oh, and I did have to replace two of my boy's hands. One of them got scratched with a pin while I was sewing shirts for him. The other boy's hand got chewed by my cat. :|

    18. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?

I've been in the hobby officially for 4 years; I joined in 2007, however I had been researching outside of Den of Angels for an additional year. Time flies!

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc

Care-wise, yes. There are some mistakes you only have to learn once. For instance, there was one time early in the hobby for me where some fingers snapped on my dolls hand while in a travel bag. After that I invested in a real carrier and always carry bubble wrap or remove the hands entirely from my doll. Face mask's and wig nets have also become a staple in my doll travel bag. As a newbie I didn't realize how worn doll eyelashes and synthetic wigs would become during travel so I've become more way more meticulous with my doll care to prevent that.

The way I treat my dolls in a 'play' sense, yes I do treat them differently now. At the start of this hobby I was obsessed with buying new wigs, clothes, eyes, accessories, you name it I bought it in that first year. Over time I came to realize I had accumulated so much junk that I wasn't using I had to sell off a ton of items. Since then I've really held off repeating the same mistakes. My dolls generally are still very spoiled n__n;; but now usually with nicer things and not as frequently.

How many dolls have you got over the years?

Currently, I own 10 full dolls (2 on the way). This is the most I've ever owned during my time in the hobby. In addition to those 10, I own 10 heads. X__X; This was not my plan, but I have the bad habit on jumping on heads in the marketplace vs. trying to scramble grabbing full dolls.

      I've sold about 4 full dolls, and 4 heads while I've been in this hobby though. Of those 8, I've bought back 2...so actually about 3 full dolls, and 3 heads have been sold permanently. n.n;

How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?

Beautifully! At the start of this hobby I was worried about this as well. I think my very first doll (Luts SDF Dion) has yellowed a bit, but he's an attractive color and is certainly not a butter yellow that I was afraid of. I have Volks dolls that were released in 2005, and are very close to the color of my newest Volks. Overall, I haven't seen too much problematic yellowing, and think even at a 4-5 year mark they are very much in a 'like new' condition. I'd also like to add they don't get too much outside play time so I think that helps a lot. n_n

    19. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?
I've been in this hobby for 8 or 9 years.
(goodness has it been so long? it doesn't feel like it!)

Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc
I would say things have primarily stayed the same - I'm still interested in second hand dolls and modifying them as I had been from the beginning. I still handle them the same but my understanding of what materials to use on them over the years has improved.
My view on doll brands have changed though now that there are so many more quality choices aside from Volks!

How many dolls have you got over the years?
More than I would like to own to be honest but most are restoration projects that I never intended to keep. Lets see I have about 10 dolls. Yikes!

How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?
Well all of my dolls were bought damaged and secondhand to some degree. The parts which yellow most are the hands and feet. I find that my oldest doll has retained its color beautifully through the years and while it's color has mellowed it hasn't become ugly. Meanwhile some newer company doll resin in white skin particularly have visibly yellowed and it's kind of annoying. Some dolls yellow because of the chemicals used on their faces.
In general the dolls remain in excellent condition. I keep them in boxes.

    20. How long have you been in the BJD hobby?
Since 2006. I didn't really get going in the hobby until 2007 when I joined DOA.
Did anything change? like the way you treat your dolls, etc
They have always been treated the same since the first one arrived. Always with the utmost care, especially around their faces.
How many dolls have you got over the years?
I had fifteen at one time, but the one little guy I never bonded with was sent to a better home. So it remains at fourteen for now
How are your dolls doing? Severe yellowing..etc. How are they holding over time?
I haven't had a big issue with yellowing, even though they have been exposed to indirect sunlight most of their lives. I noticed my Fdoll bodies have yellowed slightly, but I think that is mostly due to quality. Even my white skin Cuprit and Puki have done well. But they are both less than three years old.
