in an emergency evacuation would you take your dolls?

May 5, 2016

    1. I wouldn't even attempt to bring my dolls with me in a true emergency evacuation. I'd grab our emergency supplies/bug-out-bag (rations, water filters, medications, document backups, sleeping bags with stuff sacks, tarps, paracord, etc) grab the dogs, grab the cats, grab the animals' food buckets, grab a change of clothes and some additional underwear and socks if there was time, and go. Maybe some blankets and a pillow or two from the closet if I could swing it. My partner would be doing a similar run around and stock up, snagging things like water jugs and non-emergency-ration canned food and a gas can or two. We'd load it all into his big F-150 supercrew. Mileage is better on my Focus, but we can sleep in the F-150 more comfortably, especially in the bed under the canopy, and it will carry both of us and all four animals without being crowded.

    2. I guess it depends on how dire the situation is? If it's a 24 hours and get-out sort of thing then, yes. I'd pack them up. If it's a 'oh, crap, my house is on fire' sort of thing then I'd make sure my hubs and my pets were with me and get the heck out. Everything I have can be replaced. Eventually.

    3. i don't think any of us would grab dolls in a situation where you have to get out NOW, but when you have an hour or more to pack a vehicle and there is room in it for more than just the emergency supplies. my sister-in-law kept saying she didn't really think the house would burn, they would just get out for a few days and then come back. she would have taken more of the memorabilia, irreplaceable stuff if she had thought that what she took was all she would have left when she got back. the only thing we ever have to worry about here is a tornado, but if there was enough warning, i would certainly grab my box of dolls and my son's favorite toys if i had time.

    4. That answer depends on where I am living. If I am at home then my priority would be my family, cat, dogs, and fish. Then it would be anything that I could not replace, such as stuff that my deceased family members gave me, then it would be my dolls, laptop, books, and puppets. If we had a notice to pack up then I am sure I could take them.
If I was living in my dorm room then yes. I would make sure my roommates are out of there and then grab my fish, dolls, laptop, puppet, and everything else.

    5. It depends if I have time. Since 1st choice = safety of the people and pets.
2nd will probably my laptop and important certificates. Dolls will be 3rd though..

    6. Well...I live on a military base. It would really depend on the level of evacuation, as we're made to lockdown and be self-sufficient until things "slow down". As far as natural disasters go, no, I wouldn't take my dolls with me, just my husband and our supplies/emergency kit and our cat. The dolls can be replaced, much like anything else--it's the husband and our goofy cat I can't live without.

    7. I'd definitely take my doll... But I'd have to also take as much sentimental stuff of i could... I have a baby boy too, so I'd have to pack mostly his stuff. I couldn't imagine having that happen to me especially cuz I'm very unprepared. Buuuutttt when I'm prepared then I'd have no problem with that happening.

    8. What a scary thought! Unfortunately my dolls are on the back burner of things I should grab in an emergency, the safety of my hubbie and my cat are first. If I had time I might grab one, but which one? I honestly don't know the answer to that. If I had 24 hours or so - I'd probably just grab them with no boxes and take them with in bags.

    9. I will take only one of my dolls, minimee, i love him a lot.

    10. Depends on the severity of the fire/emergency.
If it's not serious I'll grab them and put them in a bag since I do not have that many dolls.
If it's terrible, life or death by the moment, I'll get my family to safety first and probably totally forget about my dolls.

    11. I would take my important ones. Along with BJDs I also collect Barbies so I would grab my BJDs with some of my limited edition Barbies that I know would cost me an arm and a leg to get again.

So what that and the fact that between my two roommates and I we have two cars, we would still be able to fix all the important things without my dolls taking up too much room.

After I packed up some of the things I would need to take with my such as clothes and important books and memories and I still had room I would deffentaly add more dolls to the mix.

    12. I'm from Fort McMurray. I wasn't able to get home during the evacuation because I was at work in Thickwood,
and the roads south downtown was closed, police deemed it too dangerous to go that way.

My brother was home, he called me and asked where the cat carriers were,
he said dad was packing up the van after changing batteries.
Mom was at the hospital where she works, helping them evacuate.

After our two cats were safe I asked him to grab my ball jointed dolls.
Luckilly I had them mostly packed away. My mom told me to keep them in 1-2 boxes that can be grabbed and shoved into bags in case of emergency, though this was a 'what-if' precaution way before wildfires threatened our town.
I am glad I heeded my mom's advice.
My small dolls were in chest, two yosd and doll chateau ada & dollzone heavy rain.
Plus a bunch of clothes. Most of floating doll heads were all in one doll box.
Except two that were in their own containers & had arrived recently.
Then I had three dolls out, a SD & two msd's.
I had my brother grab the chest, box, the two doll heads (tho he forgot one)
and my first msd. Leaving behind the SD and one msd.

I also had him grab my forever rose, a gift from my long distance girlfriend.
I had wanted him to grab my passport too but he didn't have time to search for it.

We all made it out safely but were separated during the entire evacuation.
I missed my family, especially my cats, and my dolls too.
My house survived, it was in the downtown area that didn't get as much damage.
But it was pretty close, one house in neighborhood above us burnt down,
the fire traveled downhill right behind our house, but firemen put that fire out.
There's trees about 5 feet from our back fence burnt. o .o

In the future I think I'll try to be more prepared,
have all dolls ready to be packed.
Important documents nearby, and a suitcase ready.

    13. Like what many users have said before me, it depends on the severity of the situation. If I'm given an hour or more to evacuate, then yes, all my dolls will be packed up and taken with me, along with my guinea pigs, ID, money, and clothes.

If I had to leave immediately, I'd grab my pets and wallet first. I always have my very first BJD stashed away in a bag at all times when he's idle, in case of an emergency, so I'll be grabbing that bag on my way out too.

    14. I hate to think about this because I recently had a fire in my home
Luckily is was small and my dolls were safe
But I would take as many as I can in an emergency situation
I couldn't bring myself to leave them

    15. If the house was on fire, then no, definitely not. I'd be trying to save my pets and get out as fast as I could. However, if a hurricane came through here then at the first sign that it might hit our area I'd pack up my dolls and be ready to grab them for an evacuation. I own a good sized vehicle and my husband has a large truck, so I'm confident that we could take more than just the necessities. I may even do two bags with my dolls, one with the limiteds and one with the standards so that I could free up room, and have the ones with me that I couldn't readily replace.

This makes me realize that I should take pictures of all of my accessories/clothing/wigs at some point, as well as all of my dolls, for insurance purposes.

    16. Jeez, this thread is making me want to pack an emergency bag. ._. Or several.

If it was a house fire situation, chances are I wouldn't take my dolls. I do have a well-stocked overnight bag handy, so I'll bring that. I don't really have a memento box or anything, so any pictures or whatever would probably burn up (my late grandma's ring is on my keychain though, and that's all that really matters to me). My PC is right next to my window so I'll probably put that outside (it's an expensive computer with years of info and memories on it! >_> ) and bring my laptop in the overnight bag. I have so many video games and manga that it'd be impossible to even try to save those, so into the fire they go... actually, I might be able to save my dolls by process of elimination. XD; All of their accessories are in a craft tote.

If it was a hurricane warning (I live in Florida), or something else I had time to pack for, then yes, I would absolutely bring my dolls. ...And put all my games and movies into a couple CD books (sorry, cases) or bag. My books and manga are screwed though. :C

    17. Well if it doesn't count to get the pets out, the 3 cats 1st as the dog will come when called, I'd grab as much as I could of my clothes & dolls as a lot are on display so I'd push them into a container. I have a lot of items that are antique and not replaceable & it would hurt to lose. I have some vintage Coca Cola stuff & one of a kind artwork I would try to grab as well if there was time.
Now people were mentioning a hurricane as I also live in Florida & I would pack many items into the storage containers I own from my many moves.

    18. Discovered that in a fire, I didn't take them. If there'd been time to plan and pack, I would have, but people and pets were way more important.

    19. If it were a situation like in the first post, where there's time and a warning and all, then yes. I'd probably take the HDD out of my computer, my binder of original artworks, money and bank books and then whatever would be worth a lot and hard to replace. They would probably be damaged though, as I can't imagine having the nerve or space to properly pack them.

If it were a sudden situation, without much time at all, then I'd probably not think of taking my dolls... maybe grab my most precious one on the way out since I used to really worry about getting my pets out in case of emergency, but we no longer have any pets so maybe a doll would replace a pet haha... it goes without saying that people and animals should always be safe first.

    20. My doggies and kitties first, but before anything else after them would come my dolls. I've only got three and a floating head right now, so it wouldn't be too hard to throw them in a bag. The rest of my family can take care of their own junk lol. If I had time, THEN I would grab other stuff that would be difficult to replace, like my expensive gaming systems and limited edition collectible junk. My dolls are part of my family, but live family like dogs and cats comes first, because I could always get another doll.
