1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Iplehouse 70cm EID Akando Discussion Part 3

Jul 15, 2009

    1. There are several really good tutorials here on DoA.

    2. A great example of a doll being saved by Rit dye: Kittymaru's orange To L became a really gorgeous color. I don't know how french resin, or the french resin mixture of the realskin would take dye but damn if a Hellboy EID wouldn't be awesome!

    3. I'm testing samples of the realskin UV in my windowsill now. Jessica's resin is darker that Evan the Tamer btw. So the new UV resin is a little darker, maybe more like Akando Pierrot?

    4. I would be very interested to see the results of that experiment, Twigling, as I can't decide whether to replace Horse in NS (my current preference) or whether the new RS is stable enough that I don't have to worry about him (which doesn't look to be the case from the Data Room experiment).

    5. Potentially stupid question alert: for the replacements, is it 60% of the cost of what you're replacing, or 60% of the total price? Akando Pierrot was fullset only; would someone replacing him be paying part of that fullset price (which included outfit, eyes, wig, knives in normal resin, and whatnot that I assume would not be replaced and doesn't need to be anyway) or just the price for the blank doll+extra head+extra hands?

    6. I am reading it as the latter, surreality. So, you pay 60% of the new doll price. Otherwise it would be daft, given that the EID LEs were EXTREMELY expensive fullsets (my bank balance is still smarting at the memory of it) and they are not replacing clothes etc. They would have to think up a price of the replacement gentle heads, though, as there are no RS heads being offered currently as option parts.

    7. I would think that the clothing and accessories are not subject to UV damage the same way that the resin is, and the offer is just to replace the doll/parts.

Madammaumau, We're having an early hot summer here, so I expect that will have an effect on the resin samples over a shorter period of time. I have seen the effects of yellowing and fading on other resin samples in my window and it tends to happen quite fast, but the UV protected samples of my own castings are very stable.

I'll keep checking in if I have any updates, or feel free to PM me so I can take a look, as I tend to forget.

    8. Twigling, you need to tell Iplehouse your recipe, and fast!

    9. Seconding that suggestion!

Also: whew. That is something of a relief, honestly. It was a little worrisome to think of what 60% of those fullsets would be, especially when many parts wouldn't need replacement.

    10. Well, this is my understanding, surreality. It doesn't make sense otherwise. And, as there is a healthy market for a greening Akando at 60% of the price of a new doll, we should be able to recoup much of our losses (minus all that shipping).

    11. I will keep testing my pieces and yes I might speak to them about it, but I think we have established it is not the UV that is the problem but the pigments. For the UV additive, it's something I put in the resin, and Iple said the resin they had ordered for this already had UV in it. I only know of one resin type that has built in UV and it is expensive and nasty toxic, even containing a mercury derivative. Not sure if this is what they are using, but I doubt they will release too much detailed information about their production methods to outsiders.

    12. I have an update of sorts on this matter. The UV sample I put in the windowsill has had about 4 days of exposure to natural Aussie spring sunlight (and presumably heat) through a glass window and has already started to go lighter and quite green. Now, the doll itself is fine, and the control sample in a drawer where I store random doll parts is also fine and unchanged. The two rooms where I have kept the full doll both have curtains permanently drawn over the windows, but they are not thick curtains and some light does come through to the effect that we don't use artificial light there during the day.

I doubt anybody would be silly enough to leave their dolls directly in the windowsill for any length of time, and perhaps this mixture is more stable than the original, but as we have more or less previously concluded, it is an instability of the red pigment, rather than the UV protection, that causes the greening.

We have seen the Iple is willing to listen to us to make changes and improvements to their products, so perhaps it is worth speaking to them about testing different pigments to try to rectify the problem?

    13. :ablah: Oh great, not only are the bloody things still going green now there's a possibility that the real skin UV resin is more toxic than normal? :doh I'm really begining to wonder about this hobby.

    14. Thanks for the update Twigling. OK. So, no more realskin for me.

What is perplexing me at the moment is how far the colour change will go, under normal circumstances. My Akando changed after an afternoon in English spring sunshine (which I suspect is rather more gentle than Aussie spring sunshine!). As he is, he has a a fading of the parts exposed to the sun and those parts have a slight green cast. Now, as he is, I can live with it and perhaps blush the red back onto the faded parts. However, I suspect that he will continue to change colour, as he is a doll that I do like to have out, albeit in a dim room. That isn't an appealling prospect. However, now that I have got used to my lovely chap in beautiful tan, I am faced with having to reshell him in NS before he turns into the Jolly Green Giant. This really isn't a good situation and I am currently unable to make up my mind what to do about it. Pah!

    15. I don't think he will continue to change without further exposure. My sample may have changed after one day, but I only thought to check it today for the first time. Maybe you should just keep him for now, think about getting him airbrushed and sell him if he gets worse. He's so beautiful how he is, it would be hard to reshell him in NS I think.

    16. sry if i ask, but are you talking about the new uv resin?
because i was placing an order for the akando RS but if really going to turn green even this new resin i wont buy.

    17. Yes, Twigling, I should wait and see how much further he changes. But my concern is, the longer I leave it, the more green he will go and the less easy he will be to sell. And I can't afford to buy a replacement unless I am absolutely certain I can sell my Horse of a different colour.

I just tried taking a picture to show the change but, as always, the colour differences that are so obvious in real life just don't show in a photo, no matter how well white-balanced it is. Anyway, you can at least see the fading between the chest and the option hand, which has been kept in a box since it arrived and is probably the same colour as it started out. If you look at the shoulder, you can also just see a bit of that green cast I was talking about too.

    18. Yes, the UV protected real skins dolls still turn green and IpleHouse knows that they do. I asked them yesterday if they were aware that the UV protection is pretty much not doing anything to stop the greening problem or the fading. This was the response to that question:

...." As we already noticed the test result on our site, environmental factors should not be ignored.
We showed if the doll was exposed to the light, the color could be changed even though it was UV resin.
But, if you take more cares about exposing to the light, you can protect from changing the color rightly.

Concerning the resin, we will expect better quality material while the technique will be better & better...."

Ah, so while they experiment on getting it right they're still pumping out real skin dolls to the masses that prolly don't know that the UV protection isn't doing squat. :doh Now don't get me wrong because I LOVE the dolls they produce.. the ones in normal skin and white skin. While the real skins are pretty for about a week before the exposure to any light starts to change them the're just too much heartbreak and wallet breaking going on with the real skins. :...( Just like many others I'm giving strong thoughts to replace my real skins with normal skins and selling my realskins to someone with a calmer personality that isn't going to get wound up like a nutron bomb when the guy goes green. *_*

    19. I am not sure why this whole turning green is such a big issue here. I know, I understand it is an issue that needs to be taken care of.. but it isn't something new. It's been long known that the tan(er) skin is harder to produce, and has a chance of turning green/yellow ever since the first Tan doll had been produce. So it's really is a buyers choice. I think this is being made into a bigger issue than it should be... but that's just how I feel about the subject anyways.
