1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Is a backstory a turn-off or turn-on when buying a doll?

Jan 24, 2007

    1. I find it kinda sweet, but the doll they speak of is the one in the photos, not the one you recieve~ It would be a little dull if we all went for the preset stories! *_*

    2. I don´t use to care stories doll companies invent, I barely even read them. I don´t think they are special I think they just try to sell the product
so I either go for the doll because she fits a pre- designed character or just want her to fit in and invent the character of my own

      but that´s me

    3. I personally very much DISLIKE backstories!!!

I'm not the most creative person in the world, but I don't need someone telling me who the doll is.

I get to decide that!! >_<

      >please excuse poster, who got bum CP body in mail and is NOT A HAPPY CAMPER today<

    4. Yup, I agree. It's my doll now.

Secondhand dolls with custom faceups and elaborate well-known backstories are a different matter. I would probably pass on these dolls also, because I wouldn't want people to say "Oh, you bought so-and-so!" If I DID buy a BJD like this, I would probably change its physical appearance entirely and make it my own character, because I would probably buy it because I desired the sculpt, not the pre-existing character.

    5. haha this is a cool question but frankly no it doesn't bother me...even more I mostly ignore them XD

If I see a doll I really REALLY want and I read some sort of background story made by the artist/company I'll read it and think "hey cool" but don't use it for my own character, or they need to be the same thing.

The background story of Bermann made me love him more but that was more the reason why he was created.

    6. Not so much ever a back story but hearing the Luts Tanning dolls have a neck cracking problem is never very enticing to hear.

    7. I pretty much ignore the back stories...I don't think they add anything to any dolls I might be interested in.

    8. I like the back stories, but I agree that they don't really have much of an influence. But it can explain what they're wearing at least.

    9. They're cute, but I don't pay them any mind. Ultimately, it's what I decide for them.

    10. It's interesting to know what the company has in mind for those dolls. I like brief and general 'backstories' like "we designed his sculpt to have a handsome and intellectual image", etc. =D But if they have a very elaborate BG, I can't help but think that ABC used to be a priest / assassin / warrior who used to be in love with XYZ. I might be wrong on this take, but I can imagine people being reluctant in having El and Lishe in a love relationship b/c LUTS defined them to be twins, whereas they might not be as reluctant if their sibling relation was not pre-defined despite them looking alike (?)

Even though I know that the boy/girl will be still fully customizable once I bring him/her home and change his/her personality and way of dress at the end, backstories do somehow influence my initial purchase. =D

    11. I think they make very interesting reads. Sometimes, they also allow me to see what the company had in mind when they created a head. However, I doubt they would affect my final choice of dolls, or what background I choose to give them as my characters.

That said, I think backstories sometimes give buyers the impetus to buy a certain head. Think of the Williams-Cecile backstory recently released by Volks. I wonder how many boys love fangirls were prompted to get a Williams because of this?

    12. basically what I was going to say ^ ^

    13. The way I think about it, is it's like the name of the sculpt. You don't buy a girl named, say, Matilda; you buy that sculpt and name it whatever feels right. Same with the story. The name and backstory to me are just another interpretation of the character. It just happens to be the BJD maker that thinks of it.

    14. I could care less about the Back Stories. I don't read them half the time. I like being shallow - I just look at the face and if it speaks to me, I'm there.

    15. I don't read back stories at all. I do pay attention to personality though.

    16. I really like to read the idea the company had when they made the doll - but it doesn't affect how I see them in any way. - If they weren't there, I wouldn't care, really. :)

    17. i have a problem with a similar subject. i don't really have character personalities for my dolls before i buy them. they're "non-characters" that reveal their personalities when we spend time together.

but recently i've purchased a dot sha second hand from another doaer and she's given him a custom faceup and a backstory. i really fell hard for him and i kinda want to keep him true to her original idea/intentions for him. i feel that's what best suits him but i don't wanna "steal" his character from her... should i ask permission before i post pics in the gallery with the name she gave him? i've never really had to deal with anything remotely similar to this so i'm just a bit clueless...

    18. I feel the same way. I love the stories and displays companies come up for dolls. I think the work and the imagination and detailing they do is amazing~ But I don't use the company's ideas, nor does it change my own notions for what I want to do with my own dolls.

I still sometimes joke about the original stories that the dolls came with, though, especially my Okita. :)

    19. I really don't mind the backstories, but I do look at the as sort of an inspiration...or...something. I never let the tell me what my doll is going to be like. Raux is in no way like Mars from Iplehouse, but I love hi all the same.

    20. The original story of the dolls do not affect me at all. I get them for the looks and their potentials.

Only the story of the Curse of Silver Coin kind stick around the three-some I have here at home LOL
