Is collecting BJD's your only hobby? Which hobby came first?

Jun 23, 2014

    1. Collecting BJD isn't my only hobby. I also like to craft, cosplay, hula hoop dance and play in different fashions. My first hobby was cosplay. I was a little girl when I started that. My dad use to make me cosplays before I understood what it was and he took me to my fist convention. Cosplay is when I learned I liked to craft things that were not cosplay related. Which goes into making clothes for my dolls. I was at a con when I went to a panel about Lolita fashion and got onto different sub culture fashions such as decora fairy kei Lolita and cyber Goth. Looking into cyber Goth and rave fashion is how I found hula hoop dancing and I craft my own hula hoops. So bjds came last. It was the last and most expensive hobby I've gotten into so far. And it clashes a lot with hula hooping because my boyfriend wants to buy me a $500 led programmable hula hoop and I wasn't a Doll Chateau Delia. Then there regardless times when I want to buy clothes for fashion for me but then I'm caught between spending money there or spending money on my dolls. It's fun never the less.

    2. I've got a few. Aside from some of the more "average" ones (I've got enough books and movies to keep myself entertained through a full winter of being snowed in!), there's also:

Art: I have tons of supplies, largely for drawing/markering. In my current layout of my studio (I'm just finishing a full revamp), I have four drawers of Copic markers, two large drawers of art paper, another drawer of pencils and pens, plus fancy papers, scissors and glues, paints, inks, brushes, screens... the list just goes on and on!

Fullmetal Alchemist: Consider this a variant of "Anime collecting." I've got a few pieces of merchandise from other series, but in the interest of limiting myself, I decided that I'd largely only collect FMA merchandise. It was actually a very safe decision when I made it (three months before the announcement of the second anime series). I've got plushies, posters, figures, wall scrolls, pencil boards, art books... all kinds of different stuff, all the same series! (I also pick up Rurouni Kenshin on the fairly rare occasions when I find it, and if I ever find anything from Legend of the Legendary Heroes, I'll pounce on that, because less than nothing exists!)

Games: I've got a fairly nice shelf of gaming stuff, and need to start dragging people over to play. I've got Magic cards and Dungeons and Dragons/RPGs (both need a lot of setup time), along with some Euro-style games, card games, board games, dice games. Not to mention all the accessories--I'm a fiend with Kickstarters for unique dice, and started following a group doing miniatures for gaming there, so "painting minis" is becoming an additional hobby!

Sewing: Cosplay, plushies, doll clothes, pillows, clothes, whatever. I just like sewing. :D I'm starting to learn a little crochet to supplement the sewing, too!

    3. Oh goodness no, not the first or only. I've got too many hobbies to count (I tend to dabble in things I find interesting... which is many, many things). I'd say my "primary" hobby is drawing, but I'm also into video games, photography, makeup, fiber arts, tea (yep, it can be a full-sized hobby, not just a beverage), reading, character design, jewelry-making, painting...

That's actually what attracted me to BJDs: they're a canvas on which I can practice many of my diverse hobbies (drawing/painting for faceups, sewing for clothes, sculpting/jewelry-making for accessories, photography) simultaneously.

    4. Well I'm VERY encouraged by how many of us have multiple hobbies! I used to feel that if only I could get interested in and stick to one thing it would be OK (and less expensive) but I never managed that. I've been a creative type all my life - I write, sew, read - but basically I just like to make stuff! I feel like every hobby I took up I learn new skills from, and when there's not too much more to learn, or I run out of space (as with the dollhouse period of my life) I kind of move on.

I have a chronic illness which has become more and more disabling, so now I don't go out to work and being at home all the time need lots of hobbies to keep me from climbing the walls! I've been pretty consistent with papercrafting over about 25 years - I remember when my family was young and we had very little money that my crafting kit fitted into a boot sized shoe box! Now I have an entire room. I've always loved dolls, and played with mine well into my teens, and then had the pleasure of playing dolls with 3 daughters and now grand-daughters. I would have liked to buy myself some dolls sooner, and was too embarrassed to admit it, but eventually I bought a reborn doll. I got into painting them myself and making clothes for them, but they began to fill the place up (like the dollshouses) so now I have just 3 and that's fine. I can't remember how I came across bjds but when I did I was blown away, and the past 18 months has been a journey of discovery. I plan to learn to do my own face ups, but am thoroughly enjoying making clothes for them in the meantime. I'm not a collector in the strictest sense - its never been enough for me to just buy, I always wanted to make stuff myself.

A lot of skills built up over many years, particularly with dolls house miniatures, now find their way into my enjoyment of bjds - did I mention that I really LIKE to make stuff? Being unable to get out much I also enjoy the company of like minded people I've met through forums such as this one, which bring the world to me when I can't go out to it.

    5. I was a cosplayer and a writer at first. In one of the cosplay conventions there was a stand with those dolls. My intrest was peaked and I looked them up online. Unfortunately it was really expensive and I found myself saying that "I'd never pay that much for a doll"...
Until one of my friends, who had a doll like that, suggested that I could shell my characters. Now I'm sucked in the hobby and I've bought quite a few of those dolls that I said I would never buy because they were too expensive xD

    6. my hobby was anime and bjd's showed up in an anime which I dont remember the name of... got me into bjd's!

    7. Uh oh... I love photography, so we can say photography is my 1st hobby and it leads me into other hobbies.

And since I was born in collector family, I collect a lot of things. :blush

I have nendoroids, anime figures, play arts, and BJDs. :XD:

I'm starting to collect Hot Toys & R.A.H too. :love

    8. My first hobby is art. Before I got my two resin boys, I love drawing animes and painting cats. I also like cross stitching, biking, photography and surfing the web.

    9. I feel like I already answered this but can't find my reply so...

no, BJDs are far from being my only hobby.
I do art in lots of mediums (drawing, painting, sculpting (miniatures), sculpture/wood working, design, knit, crochet, dance, calligraphy, jewelry making, color work, different types of printing, at least 3 more that I'm forgetting), I worked as a freelance graphic designer for a while, and I also dabble in film (video) but I'm not very good at it. I got into (digital) photography because of BJDs. I watch a fair amount of anime and occasionally read manga and light novels. I play video games. I study Japanese (this started as a hobby but now it's like a part of my life), these days more kanji and keigo. I read non-fiction books (including encyclopedias, dictionaries and historical books) but haven't had the time lately. I watch horror and gore movies along with documentaries on pretty much anything. Writing (no so much stories but practicing penmanship), Cooking/Baking. Listening to music while walking. I collect other things such as anime figures, books, art supplies, ect. And the last thing that's coming to mind is studying history. I have a lot of hobbies so I'm sure that I missed something(s) and will probably have to edit this later.
I used to cosplay, not so much anymore but I do still do it every now and then.
Lolita is another hobby that I love and have been researching for years, I used to be very active in the community (more of a lurker these day) of but haven't actually jumped into yet. And playing music is something else I'm interested in but haven't really gotten into yet.

    10. For me, sewing came first, then knitting. I knitted for OT dolls, since it doesn't get cold enough down here to knit much for myself. Now that I have a Soom Teenie Gem, it's fun to sew and knit for her.

Yes me too, so either it got deleted or it was another similar thread.

I'm old, so I've had many different hobbies and collections in my life. I've always collected dolls of some sort, and for a long time I collected miniature dolls to go along with my dollhouse hobby. I still have all my dollhouse miniatures, but they are packed away.
When I was a kid I collected miniature ceramic animals. I lost most of them when my family moved, but recently I found a Siamese cat from my childhood collection that had been mixed in with my sewing supplies. Now it sits with my BJDs.
I've always done sewing as a hobby. But what I sewed varied through the years. Sometimes it was quilts, sometimes soft dolls, sometimes doll clothing. I sewed for a living so I didn't sew many clothes for myself though. Too much like work.

    12. When I was younger I collected porcelain dolls, Polly Pockets, and Pokemon cards. Now I still play Pokemon among other video games and I've started collecting Amiibos. I also have a pretty good collection of movies:whee:

    13. What first brought me into the BJD world was anime and manga. The first doll I saw was an Iplehouse Jessica, which came up on my search results for an anime figure! :sweat Of course I had no idea what the doll was, but it piqued my interest 3-4 months later when I found out what the dolls were called. It's ironic; I got out of one expensive hobby straight into another!

    14. I've been a very fan of anime and photography since I was very young. The hobby started off having owned a few small action figures and taking pictures of them in various poses. As I got older and more financially well off, I bought myself some nicer camera equipment and started doing part-time weddings but real people are just too difficult to deal with but action figures are just too small and boring to shoot after a while, until i came across some large scale 1/3 bjd photos... BANG!! a lot of money later, dolls are now my fashion models :love

    15. I'm a bit too old for this to have been my first hobby, LOL I actually never really DROP hobbies unless forced to (ie no access to a ceramics shop, for instance). I started sewing (for Barbie dolls) at age 8, loved dress-up which lead to costuming, started writing stories in Junior HS, took photography in HS, got fascinated with everything Arthurian, SF & fantasy (Tolkien) in my teens. Still have all those interests. I dance, sing, write, sew, and have for years. Been involved in the SCA off & on since the 80s :D Love anime, K-everything LOL, and Hong Kong martial arts films ~sigh~ BJDs help me express quite a lot of these interests - I too picked most of my sculpts based on how well they'd cosplay various anime characters! (mainly Bleach...but Gintama, Cowboy Bebop & Rurouni Kenshin as well!)

    16. Art would have to be my first hobby. I love drawing. It was through art that I found out about BJD. I had a Deviant Art account and used it to look at peoples artworks and to post up my own. That was when I saw a photo of someone's Crobi Nia. I actually thought he was a little strange looking. BJDs have similar characteristics to anime/manga characters (e.g. big eyes, small nose, small mouth, round cheeks, pointed chin, etc.) but they also had a realistic appearance which made me think they could possibly be human. I was also slightly terrified by dolls as well haha. But then someone else posted a picture of their DollShe Saint and it was such a beautiful and artistic photo that looked utterly human. So then I wanted a BJD and did my research. It's only recently that I have been heavily invested in the hobby though. I definitely don't regret it.

    17. I have quite a few hobbies but id say my first and still at the top of my list is cosplay. Thats where most of my money goes and if i didnt do this id probably have much more money for bjds. I love collecting bjds, but I think I love sewing just a little bit more. I also collect antique cups and saucers.

    18. Definitely not my first hobby, but probably the first time I've ever been so passionate about one. In the past I've been into other crafty things like drawing, cosplay, fashion, creating characters, etc. Collecting bjds as the next hobby makes sense looking at it, because in a way I can sort of combine all of those other interests and learn new crafty things along the way!

    19. Art came first for me. Along with gaming. Then my best friend got me into collecting monster high and other various fashion dolls. Then the resin babies came to be!

    20. I have a lot of hobbys, and some I'd like to try.
I draw my characters and write their stories (trying to get a webcomic started here), sew, read, roleplay (often), and of course BJD collecting. I also do a little bit of violin/ocarina playing, jewelry making, sculpting, terrarium making, singing, and such.
Also is pet-collecting a hobby? XD Honestly my house is a zoo. I have three pets alone living in my room.
