Is collecting BJD's your only hobby? Which hobby came first?

Jun 23, 2014

    1. Oh man, I have so many hobbies--BJD definitely weren't the first. I've been making and collecting stuff for years, but most of my hobbies link back to art in some way. I guess my actual hobby is making things? All the painting and sculpting and fibre arts skills are pretty useful in this hobby, though. I like that I've found something that I can throw my hodgepodge of maker abilities at and come up with something decent, and I've learned to airbrush and resin cast because of BJD.

    2. Not the first hobby but I tend to go for the expensive hobbies :XD: I cosplayed, have brand lolita dresses, and now I'm into dolls!! I can only afford one of these hobbies at a time though so cosplay and lolita fashion are on hold until i can get a good doll crew going (which should be sort of complete next year!! my two incoming dolls complete the characters in my story) I'm going to focus on their wardrobes, and after graduating from college I can hopefully start back up one other hobby again!

    3. Oh sure, I have lots of hobbies, too many even. I like paper crafts and quilling, and I'm going to incorporate it into my bjd crafting too. I plan on making accessories and props for my little dolls using paper.

    4. My only other hobby before this one was literally locking myself up in a room and rotting away.

I fell for bjds when I watched a certain anime. Another, but I did not know where to look for these dolls so I let them pass. Then suddenly I found them again with more information. I went off on Google and found a website. I don't remember the name, but I saw the cutest sculpt there. It was love at first site with it until I saw the price. I genuinely believes there was something wrong with the prices. I believes it was in another currency or perhaps a common joke for the doll folks. Then I found out that $500 was really the price for the doll.

I tried to convince myself to not join the hobby, to forget about them. I obviously failed at that and here I am today. After joining this hobby I joined a few other's. Collecting more dolls, even reborns. Joining the bjd hobby allowed me to realize something. My passion for dolls never died.

So, I'm attempting to join more doll related hobbies.

    5. Before bjds my hobbies revolved around textiles. You name almost any textile related craft and I've done it. :) I love bjds because I can incorporate a lot of these techniques, like beading, sewing, sashiko, quilting, etc.

    6. It's funny because I actually got into BJDs because I collect figures. I also kind of heard about BJDs because of playing Silent Hill 2 and reading about the mannequin and its similarities to Hans Bellmer's BJDs. So video games are also a huge hobby of mine. I'm just a nerd all around. :)

    7. I have always loved dolls, American Girl dolls especially when I was younger :kitty2 I thought around age 12, I had grown out of it, but nope! I began the hobby of sewing rag dolls, which I still continue today. I only entered the BJD hobby around last year, and will hopefully continue for quite a while more. I have so many other hobbies, but these are the ones doll related :3nodding:

    8. I have had plenty of hobbies over the years. Cosplay and martial arts came first, then bjd's. I've since moved on to original/fantasy-based cosplays and Renaissance Faires. I've also been doing some mmorpgs. I'm also started to get into 1:6 figures as well.

    9. Comic books and video games. I took up bjd's during an extremely difficult time in my life. Some days it was so nice to just lock myself away and work on something beautiful, when the rest of life seemed so bad.

    10. nope I definitely have other hobbies :) I'm into video games, reading, writing, tumblr (does that count?), artistic stuff, pets, and snakes.

    11. Cosplay is actually my main hobby, I've been doing it for a few years now where I'm very new to BJD. BJDs are something I'm doing more for myself, though where cosplay is more of a group activity I do with my best friends. I don't think i could afford to have more hobbies after that! :sweat

    12. I have a variety of hobbies however I will focus mainly on collecting since I have a few. I use to collect Disney pins, however when one of my favorite series was discontinued I began to stop collecting since there weren't any new ones coming out. I wanted to collect very specific scenes of the pins however the ones I wanted were very rare and very expensive thus I eventually took a break and then pretty much stopped collecting. I do still collect maybe one or two every year or so but not as grand a scale as before.

When I gave up my BJD hobby years ago, it was actually because I started getting into anime figures namely Nendoroids. I loved how cute they were and basically wanted almost every one of them (at least the ones that I have watched before). Although it wasn't as expensive as BJDs, I was stretched thin between the two hobbies and ultimately had to give one up which at the time was BJDs.

Now I am currently collecting Alpacasso plushies and I am very close to completing my collection. I think it's because I am so close that I started deviate back towards BJD dolls since I still find them very beautiful and pretty.

    13. I love nendoroids and Alpacassos!!!! I have a few of those myself. I collect stuffed animals in general. :)
And Nendoroids are a lot of fun.

    14. Yes I think Nendoroids are super cute especially since they are chibi. The only downside is because it has gotten so popular there are basically bootlegs for almost every new series which is quite sad. I guess it's a good thing GoodSmile is popular and big enough to continue releasing Nendorid figures even with the cut in sales internationally due to bootlegs.

    15. When I was a kid we had this tiny doll house and I remember loving the tiny furniture. Nothing more came from that.
Mostly collecting little things. I collected marbles. Miniature planes and TINY cars. Then Collected those Buddha s they sell in health stores for some reason. Then I just started collecting art supplies and video games.

    16. I have plenty of hobbies! Drawing being my number one hobby of all time! I can sit for hours on end just drawing/doodling! I also like playing video games and running, plus lately I've been crafting my own BJD

    17. My hobbies started as bratz doll collecting and sewing clothes for them, then sculpting, then cosplay, and now ball jointed dolls :)

    18. Lol, no bjd's weren't my first hobby, not by a long shot.
My first hobby, apart from the not so great fanfics I would come up with in high school, was crocheting. I've since added cosplay, sewing, quilting, tie-dye and a number of others to the list.
And I'm always looking to add more... I think there needs to be more than one of me or something so I can do everything.

    19. I have so many hobbies. Herbalism, tarot, perfumery, reading, hiking, collecting rocks, playing video games. My place is a mess. There's so many hobby supplies covering every surface.

    20. Oh man, with anime stuff especially there's a bootleg version of almost everything, and even entire new products that are unlicensed, the industry is unbelievably huge. I think it's wild that the bootleg nendoroids would cut that much into sales, because they are terrible. :nowords: I ended up with a bootleg petit by accident and next to a legit you can totally tell, it's pretty bad. Crappy paint job, bad color matching, lopsided face screening, a bunch of flash, even the color of the skin is nasty. The only use I have for it is to possibly make a comparison showing the differences so other people don't get duped. A fair amount of skill went into replicating the box, but you can still tell.

I have tons of other hobbies, occasionally I plonk around on weird instruments (not any good, can hardly play songs, haha), listen to music, write (I like to create characters, mostly, though I do have world's for some of them it's not something I consider myself really good at) draw, paint, sew, some minor carpentry, some amateurish sculpting, a few collections, gravestone rubbings, hunting for dead stuff in the woods, reading and studying, video games, comics and related culture, going to antique and thrift shops, googling/ebaying/etsy-ing for the perfect nothing-else-will-do addition to whatever craft project... lots of art-related stuff. There's probably more. :sweat
