Is collecting BJD's your only hobby? Which hobby came first?

Jun 23, 2014

    1. I suppose either Barbie collecting (which I briefly did as a teenager) or dolls' houses and minatures (which I started in my late teens and still do, to some extend). After that came cross stitch/needlework, knitting, a brief period of collecting a specifc brand of vinyl dolls, and a very long period where I was very active with both cross stitching and dolls' houses. And cat breeding. And playing Sims.
And then I discovered BJDs. By accident. On a Sims 3 forum, of all places. I was intrigued, then fell in love, then impulse-bought a RS Wu. And the rest, as they say, is history.

    2. @Fairy Milliner I'm with you on the cross stitching. It's such a relaxing activity. But for me, cross stitching came a little while after I started with BJDs

    3. I've collected stuff all my life really. I sort of when through phases. I did the whole beanie baby thing, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Legend of Drizzt, Bleach, then I started with bjd. From there I started collecting anime figures, but lately I've been more focused on bjd again.

    4. I had only started this hobby this year.
I have been a cosplayer for 5 years and a graphic artist in between. These 2 hobbies helped me in my very first face up.

At first, I decided to quit cosplaying and focus on the doll hobby but right now I am enjoying both ^.^

    5. My biggest hobby has always been art and sketching and painting, but I've kept up other hobbies such as sewing, collecting little oddities and trinkets, etc.

    6. Dolls are not my only hobby - I also like all kinds of toys and collectibles. Additionally, I enjoy weight lifting and fitness - used to ride horses, and still have that passion (but not currently engaged in it). I like writing also, and history is my favorite subject to study and read about. ^__^

    7. I have lots of hobbies! The first things that I really became super interested in were anime/manga and video games and drawing my favorite characters.I admit that I've really cut back on the anime a lot since I was younger and am not so interested in a lot of new series, but every now and then I'll enjoy watching it. I do find myself still just as psyched about games, though, and I actually draw and paint various characters on GameBoys on the side for some extra money. :3

Anyway, through anime and manga, I became interested in tarot cards (DNAngel was what started that for me, to be specific) and runes. It also piqued my interest in Japanese fashion, particularly lolita fashion ( I've never actually worn any lolita clothing, but boy was I obsessed with anything and everything having to do with the style and I admired it so much!) which is how I actually found out about the existence of bjds! I really liked them, but I hadn't delved very far into looking into becoming part of the hobby after seeing the prices, so even though I thought they were so pretty, I didn't want to become too infatuated with the idea of getting one as I didn't have a job and my mom was the only one raising me and I didn't want to burden her further financially, so I kind of put them out of my mind.

Fast forward some odd years later to 2012 when my husband and I were living in Japan, I started collecting EAH dolls, which opened the door to Pullip dolls! I thought they were so adorable (still do! I still collect them!) and started to look them up more. I was again a little daunted by the price, but my husband eventually bought me two that I had my eye on and since then I was just hooked and started looking up more about them and blogging about them, and I was so thrilled to find there were places that weren't far away that I could go to and buy them in person! I often went to KiddyLand to look at them, or sometimes for an even closer option we would go to Hobby Off and would see some of them being sold for a really great price. I found a pretty rare one for super cheap there one time and snagged her up right away! xD I also noticed that they would also sometimes carry bjds, and I would look at them too, but what with me spending most of my funds on Pullip dolls, it just didn't seem like a good idea to get into bjds. Eventually, I met my best friend who is mainly a bjd collector, and we were going back and forth on tumblr showing each other dolls we liked, both bjds and Pullip dolls alike, and then I came across a Kid Zuzu Delf Corni, and I fell completely in love and knew that if I were to get any bjd, it would have to be her! It took me a little while to decide that I really wanted to work and save up for her so I could own her, but I did end up doing so and now I'm hooked! So, bjds are both kind of new and kind of old to me, but I'm really really loving it! I really am happy that my doll family as a whole is gaining more variety, and will continue to do so what with so many other bjd girls on my wishlist now!

    8. BJDs were my first real hobby. I was always a creative, artsy person, but when I found BJDs, it was as if this missing piece in my life suddenly appeared. Through BJDs, I also became interested in EGL fashion and sewing. And now, I'm attempting my first cosplay. I don't know if any of these other pursuits would have come into my life if I hadn't found BJDs.

    9. I've always collected and played with dolls, and I've always loved and collected miniature items. These two interests eventually led me to 1:12 scale doll houses and miniatures. Of course I still collected and played with other dolls, and I still continued to collect miniature items that weren't 1:12 scale.

Also, I've always been particularly fascinated and drawn towards articulated dolls, figures, and puppets, so when I discovered BJDs it was like finding the perfect doll, I guess you could say that BJDs are my Grail dolls.

Dolls and miniatures aren't my only hobbies, I've always had lots of hobbies, arts and crafts, reading, costuming, collecting dragons, collecting edged weapons, etc.

    10. My first hobby was collecting dolls and teddy bears and then Cambridge glassware in the Rosalie pattern. I have always loved dolls,so,when I came across Bjds,I knew I would have my own collection.

    11. Boy, I sure do have a lot of hobbies going on right now! but my first one to have manifested definitely has to be knitting, as I learned that in girl guides when I was a lot younger, and then the hobbies just piled on since! Including but not limited to crocheting, sewing, jewelry making, calligraphy etc.

    12. I don't have hobbies as much as I have obsessions. Bjds, Sherlock, and Sailor Moon are my most continuous obsessions so they've gotten the most attention and money thrown at them. I tried to make a doll skirt today and failed miserably, so I'm pretty sure sewing won't be up to hobby status for a while. I used to be really into jewelry making, but I just got bored with it. I still have all of my supplies, though, and I've been thinking about breaking out the craft tub and making doll jewelry and headbands. I've been into dolls in one form or another ever since I was small, I've just upgraded my doll quality.

    13. I have a number of collections; I'm just a collector by nature, I suppose! I have large stashes of perfume and nail polish and some small plush collections that I'm trying to thin out at present - mostly Hello Kitties and My Little Ponies out of nostalgia for my childhood. I also have a small stash of various craft supplies and adult coloring books. I tend to immerse myself in my hobbies at first, and then eventually taper off to something more casual.

    14. I definitely have many hobbies, most relating to art such as sewing, painting and drawing. I play a lot of video games and trading card games as well, and my dad and I are going to start bee keeping next spring! I like to keep busy I guess lol

    15. I actually was a seamstress by hobby and by trade before I got into BJDs. I have a lot of hobbies that are craft related, I also enjoy gaming, cards, bicycling, reading, and studying other languages.

    16. I have a couple of different hobbies of collecting.
      Bjds are #1 for me.
I collect flocked original Kens & his outfits
I also collect vintage Coca Cola stuff
I also collect vintage photos of men ( cut guys lol)
I also collect vintage sewing items like buttons, thread on spools, needle packs, etc!
I also write stories, sew & design menswear

    17. My first collectible hobby is comic books. Especially Witchblade comics. then video games and figures and then came pullips which got me into bjds

    18. I was born a packrat, lol, so I collected what I could when I could. Alway loved dolls and held my dear but really didn't add until an adult. I was raised around artists so my mamaw got me into beading really early as well as a bit of simple stick and hand weaving and basic knitting and crochet which I liked allot better than knitting all of that before 5 later I seriously got into embroidery and needlepoint and well as creating my own designs and in particular geometrics to do in needlepoint and embroidery.I use to enjoy to try and sew or my dolls and at school around 12/13 was considered good then my mamaw let the winds out of my sails on sewing when I was like 17 over a project. I had already started growing tried of it as I enjoyed working with needles more. Bjds came much later like around 2005/6 or so as far as seeing and being somewhat interested in them, 2008 getting my first US resin

    19. I have several hobbies, but in terms of collections, virtual pets were my first (and still primary) collection. Then I got into Monster High, and BJDs from there.

    20. I actually found BJDs through Pullips, but I found Pullips through American Girl Dolls (there was an old series on YouTube about AGDs meeting Pullips or something). However, I also collect My Little Ponies and playline dolls (mostly Bratz and Monster High), draw, write, play video games, sew, cosplay, and am a member of my school's theater club and marching/concert band where I play vibraphone :daisy
