Is collecting BJD's your only hobby? Which hobby came first?

Jun 23, 2014

    1. I had always liked to collect tiny things. It started with small ceramic figurines and polly pockets, now it had evolved into collecting tiny BJDs :wiggle
Other than that, the rest of my free time is wasted on reading innutritious novels. :XD:

    2. My first hobby ever is drawing, but this last year I must confess that my bjd hobby took A LOT of my free time. I hope I can do more thing in the hobby, like doing face up, making clothes, accessories. And maybe one day sculpting my own bjd. (I love 3D sculpting and have some abilities with it-)
So I suppose BJDs are my prior hobby this days.

    3. I had an interesting journey to get to BJD. I have always been a collector, mainly of lego and disney. I started collecting LOL dolls but I wanted something that I could better customize and that's when research brought me here.

I am also a musician for my other hobby and play guitar, piano, saxophone, ukulele, and dulcimer. I'd love to get some small prop instruments for my doll to combine some of those hobbies together. :)

    4. I love reading all of these and finding out I have so much in common with others hobbies. I feel like I finally found my family.

    5. :XD:
      Omg, this question.
My main hobby is frantically switching from hobby to hobby on some kind of crazy hobby carousel. I'm lucky I manage to fit in eating and sleeping.
...but they all roughly fit into the categories of games and art.
I paid for my entrance into this hobby by selling a Magic the Gathering card I bought 8 years ago for $60 that's now going for $1300. Easily my best % return on investment on anything ever.
And I don't regret it even a little bit.
      ;)

    6. Nope. Collecting BJDs isn't my only hobby nor my first or even last. Haha. I'm an avid collector of stamps, coins, antiques, books, sci-fi/fantasy/mystery memorabilia, anime/manga, fountain pens, stationery, folding fans, teddy bears, figurines of various types, stickers, jewelry, gemstones, video games, board games, plants (orchids, roses, etc.), dishes/tea sets, outfits of different styles/eras, dolls (Barbie, porcelain, cultural/ethnic), and probably more than I listed. I rotate through any one of them at any given time depending on my mood, shopping situation, and what I'm interested in investing in next. Newest hobby is still around a couple years old and oldest hobby has been around for a couple decades (around pre-K). Oldest hobby is a toss up among stamp collecting, coin collecting, gemstone/rock collecting, or book collecting. My parents and extended family were really good about fostering varied interests but at the same time being faithful to them as long as they still give me joy and weren't ruining me financially. Definitely had to earn anything I collected which is probably why I'm still attached to most of the things I've acquired.

    7. Being interested in illustration is what got me into doll tbh

    8. BJDs is my oldest continuous hobby as I started when I was a teenager. Before that, I kept fish and did other art stuff.
Currently, my active hobbies besides BJDs include keeping a bio active frog habitat and trying speciality coffees and making espresso-based drinks.
What I like about BJDs as a hobby is that there are several other hobbies that can be explored within the context of BJDs. I’ve tried sewing for BJDs and sculpting props, for example.
I’ve always been interested in photography and will probably start using my BJDs as subjects to try that out.

    9. I'm a mural painter, so art and creative expression has always been something I hold close to my heart. I would have to say that my photography hobby led me to doll collecting. At first it was me taking photos of my friends' dolls, then I ended up getting a few for myself

And I must say that I find photographing dolls so much more enjoyable than shooting human models, because I'm in full control of how I want them to look like and truly have fun with my creative expression!

    10. I’ve had so many, many hobbies…all creative. I’ve always loved sewing and fashion, historical and fantasy reenactment, creating artistic decor, writing stories, painting and drawing, etc., etc., etc. What I love about BJDs is that this brings all my varied hobbies together under a single umbrella, where I can freely express all my interests as a cohesive whole. Perfection!:)

    11. I am also on the "creative hobbies" team! Prior to BJDs, I really was into historical stuff and crafting stuff. BJDs kind of gave me a focus but they are ultimately an extension of my former hobbies.

Outside of the creative hobbies, I am really into cooking. I love to eat, lol. I also like to discover how other countries cook, and how people ate and cooked at different eras.

    12. I have way to many hobbies to keep track of to be honest *_* I love all of them though! Many of them include creativity like sewing, drawing, using my cricut, cosplaying, etc. but also includes reading, writing, and true crime with a healthy dose of animal loving on the side. My fiancé and I currently have around 80ish fish with a 150 gallon tank and 4 cats so :abambi: BJD's definitely wasn't the first hobby I had, but I do collect other dolls as well like the Disney Designer Collection so for me, it went hand in hand!

    13. I am in the many hobbies club. Or hyper fixations. The ones I always have time for fantasy and scifi books and boardgames.

Poetry, crafts and etc come and go. But I didn't quit any to start collecting bjd.

    14. I have been a dollhouse collector/builder for years. I think I've almost run out of space for them. But these BJD's are new to me. And of course, I have my eye on some of the bigger ones.

    15. This is not my only hobby, not by a long shot. I collect animation cels, collect records, write (actually published a book a few years ago), cross stitch, play video games - the list goes on.

    16. Dolls were not my first hobby. I have always "collected stuff" through the years. However, right now dolls are one of the few hobbies that I do have. Other than dolls, my hobbies include playing video games, playing music/composing/songwriting and writing a book! I am a full time mom and adult college student as well.

    17. I just got into bjd dolls this past month and a half. I used to do costume design for theater and had stopped that around 8 years ago. I really missed costuming and made a friend that kept her bjd hobby a secret until we got to know eachother more. When she mentioned them it was super interesting and got me excited to continue costuming again. Since it's small scale it would go quicker, be more cost efficient, and give me an excuse to create things. Let's be real, halloween is only once a year no reason to make a bunch of things.

My doll should be coming in 2 months! And I've been going ham with designs in anticipation for her arrival!

    18. I've collected dolls and action figures pretty much my whole life. I also collect, build, and paint tabletop gaming miniatures as well as play said tabletop games.

    19. I was into sewing (for my kids and their dolls) and then stumbled upon a bjd on a blog and that was it. Hooked ever since! ^_^

    20. Drawing was definitely a big hobby of mine I used to like doing and still do I just don't draw much nowadays. I also have others like collecting other kinds of dolls, gems/crystals, plushies, ect.

I knew about bjds but wasn't really focused on them as I was with reborn dolls. I always love life sized things so when I start my bjd collection thats what I want 60cm to 80cm or even bigger if I can get them!
