Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Is collecting BJD's your only hobby? Which hobby came first?

Jun 23, 2014

    1. I've wanted to collect BJD since I learned about them at an anime convention. I didn't start until a little over two years ago.

In no particular order my hobbies are:
Lolita fashion. Classic and Kuro primarily.
Crafting- floral hair accessories, beaded jewelry, decoupage
      Cosplay
Anime and manga- favorites are Fullmetal Alchemist, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Fruits Basket, and Paradise Kiss.
I have a very spoiled little white Shelter Prince dog who is grumpy and getting on in years, and two cockatiels and one parakeet.
I also play flute and piccolo. I used to be quite good, now? Not so much. I have to start practicing more regularly.
For exercise I figure skate and practice yoga.

Of course due to going back to school to pursue a degree in Occupational Therapy, much of this has had to take a backseat to academics.

    2. I'm only new to the hobby of collecting BJD's.
I primarily collect vintage and antique charms. That lead to a fascination with all things miniature. I then wanted to get into building doll houses but I loathed all the fabric and wood dolls for 1:12 scale and started hunting for the perfect doll. I finally found the perfect doll in a 5.5" Nabiyette elf. She is perfect.
      Now I'm contemplating an 18" doll..sigh

    3. Well I've always had dolls and since I first saw a BJD when I was younger I've always wanted one. But aside from dolls I also draw/write my own manga. I'm really big into anime, video games, and cosplay. Sounds cliche but these are all serious hobbies for me that I put a lot of effort into. Bjd's are another medium for me to express my art and creativity.

    4. It's awesome to see how many people in the forum write their own fiction. Dolls and writing have always been intertwined for me as well. I can't really count reading as a hobby because it's like breathing to me, but I do think playing with dolls and making up stories was my very first hobby. Doll collecting has become a true passion over the years...so that I don't pursue as diverse a group of interests as I once did.

    5. My first one was mange... :-) but collecting bjd is my only hobby now. Of course Im playing games too, but its for my work. (Im working in game company as an environment artist lol)

    6. My first and oldest hobby is cross-stitch embroidery. Now I'm also interesting in micro stitch emroidery for making some cute things for BJDs.

    7. My first and longest-standing hobby is creative writing. I've been doing that as long as I can remember. That was something I did long before I ever discovered the BJD hobby but, as it turns out, most of my resin crew are based on characters I've created over the years. In the majority of cases, the characters pre-date the resin incarnation by several years or even decades. :XD:

My other hobbies include singing, photography and jewelry making. I used to be in musical theatre and acting, but haven't done that for quite some time. For leisure activities, I like to swim.

I also collect other kinds of dolls besides BJD and I've been doing that for quite a while.

    8. Being new to bjd's, they are definitely not my first nor only hobby. Writing, drawing, cooking, baking, genealogy, knitting, sewing, beading, etc... I probably have too many hobbies!! Some of them shall come in handy with the bjd hobby too. ;)

    9. Ah...yep! I think so. If only I could call computer games a hobby, but it is rather a point of life for me, ha-ha! :)

    10. My general hobbies are painting and BJD. I have a lot of unserious hobbies too.

    11. I also collect pins-- it started out as just enamel anime pins back in 2004, and it's grown to include general fandom enamel pins-- mostly because they don't really make those anime pins anymore.

I also do photography and create costumes.

    12. I draw, write, paint and world create. I rp, both forum style and table-top. I sew, do a little jewelry making and chain mail crafting. uuhhmmm... Lots of things???

Those are hobbies I'd grown in, before buying my first doll. And since that time, I've found that the bjd hobby is a beautiful place for me to take all of those other hobbies of mine and bring them together. My dolls have worlds all their own, with stories and distinct personalities. I sew their outfits, style their wigs (sometime soon, I want to try my hand at creating them some custom wigs), create their jewelry and eventually, I'll get better at face-ups so I can bring in the painting/arting bits too haha~ I also really love taking pictures, so even that makes it into the equation. Just perfect, all around. ^_^

    13. My love for BJDs grew out of a love for sewing. I particularly enjoy sewing frilly things, and when I saw 50cm and larger dolls they just seemed like the perfect models. Big enough that sewing isn't tedious, but still smaller than a human so I'm not cutting a million miles of fabric or having to store a ton of human-sized voluminous dresses.

I also had a lot of porcelain dolls when I was a child (every birthday/Christmas until I was old enough to ask for anything else, multiplied by a large extended family...) so I've always had a bit of a soft spot for inhumanly beautiful dolls. I'm just glad that BJDs are easier to customize lol.

    14. Have had many hobbies, but guess they all happened together (in a round about way). Doll collecting was renewed this year after many years away from it.
Also love Rudolph Valentino (wish there was a doll of him) and adore Marilyn Monroe.
I also collect mannequins, mostly the ones sculpted after famous models: Twiggy, singer Sandy Shaw, Pat Cleveland, Marie Helvin, Sayoko Yamakuji, Yasmin le Bon, etc.
So - guess it all relates? Pop culture, icons and the human form in some degree?[IMG]

    15. My first hobby way back as a kid was collecting all kinds of dragons, from figures to toys. Now I love to sculpt tons of little dragons. Then anime/manga and all things to do with my favorites. The past few years I have been into finding tea cups. I love the tea cups with little feet! I have one whole tea set with dragons painted on them. That nobody can go near. But as of late they have been getting harder to find. Which brings me now to the BJDs.

    16. Hmm... I'd consider myself an oldie as I've been into BJDs since 2004... however I've been doing a whole lot of things aside from dolls... I play video games, draw, paint, make short films, watch tons of movies and consume thousands of pages of prose and poetry and I write too. I read manga, watch anime, listen to drama cds... I "collect" books and manga and comics as well, as well as a few dvds and music discs as well. I sew and design costumes, and recently I've been interested into learning how to knit too. I also used to play piano and guitar although I don't do that as much anymore, but I will on occasion compose digital music when I feel like it on my computer and have been interested in learning to use Vocaloid as well. I'm also an avid roleplayer, both on the internet as well as in real life, and I DM quite well if I say so myself when it comes down to pen and paper. So no, definitely not, BJDs aren't my only hobby, however I've always had dolls in one form or another through the years and BJDs have been one of the best things -if not the best thing- that has ever happened to me hobby-wise.

    17. I don't know what my first hobby was, but I enjoy lots of them! I'm a mermaid, I draw, read, write, listen to music, I'm a huge gamer nerd (tabletop, video games and card games), I collect other things and I also have BJDs. I'm on the downswing in the BJD hobby at the moment due to lack of space. :(

    18. BJD is so-to-say my newest hobby haha!
Started with general arts and crafts, to manga art and manga/anime watching/collecting, music, photography, cooking and baking, gardening,.................... there's a couple crafts I haven't tried yet so BJDs won't be my last new hobby but yeah, I'm quite busy haha!

    19. Video games is a huge hobby of mine so that obviously came before BJDs. I collected anime figures for 2 years before getting my first BJD.

    20. My hobbies are reading, writing, drawing, design, making accesories, etc but now I only had time to read, draw, and bjds...sigh...
