Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Is collecting BJD's your only hobby? Which hobby came first?

Jun 23, 2014

    1. I have others hobbies which are Lolita Fashion, animals -especially hamsters- and photography. I spend about as much time and money on each hobby but depending of my mind, I might spend more time for one of them for some time then go again more on another one.
Of course, my passion for hamsters is quite more important as I have three ones at home and this is a passion I can't put on the side because they need me. :)

    2. World of Warcraft's my other big hobby. Used to watch a lot of anime, but don't as much because it takes up valuable fishing time. I fish in Warcraft. Yep, a big exciting digital world with tons to do and my favorite thing is fishing. I used to cosplay, but stopped for a few years because of my poor self image. I'm doing better now so I am inching back into it. I just have to watch some anime first to have something to cosplay as.

    3. Sweet-Rainb0w I love HAMSTERS:D I had some in my chilhood.

Yes, I think the Bjdolls are my only hobby because I love sew and draw till I was tiny and now my job and studies are a desing and draw clothes for human and now Bjdoll's. I collect the dolls what I fall in love without story or nothing.

    4. BJDs and video games are my biggest hobbies right now. BJDs encompasses pretty much anything crafty that I do. Even though they're only one hobby, they are a gateway to trying out so many different genres, mediums, etc.. Video games definitely came first, but I've always been crafty, too.

    5. Aside from my boys, I love playing video games, drawing, and playing magic the gathering! All really expensive hobbies as well!! :...(

    6. Just realized I double-posted on this thread, with a more descriptive post written later. This can be deleted if need be!

    7. Do you mean collecting wise? If so, then it isn't my only hobby and it wasn't my first. I collect comics, manga, anime, some TV series, and figures. I also buy cosplay, but it's not really something I see as a collection. My first collection was rocks, but I haven't done that since grade school. :)

    8. BJDs aren't my only hobby, heck, they aren't even the first dolls I collected, those were antique dolls. My other hobbies include sewing, my cat & a small cat collection, collecting teddy bears, photography & drawing. I used to collect antique mesh & beaded purses, antique children's clothing, vintage photographs & Jewel Tea china. Then I moved from a small house to an even smaller apartment & liquidated those collections, just no room. Photography & drawing are probably my oldest hobbies. I became interested in sewing after I started collecting antique dolls. Actually of all my hobbies, BJDs are the newest & I've been collecting them for close to 10 years now. I just bought myself a new sewing machine & hope to start sewing for my dolls again.

    9. No, it isn't. Since I know what the letters are, I read books and also write stories. In my teenage years I started to draw and do handwork. I always keep myself busy. But if you mean hobby as collecting: as a little child I always asked my mom for porcelain figures instead of toys. Subsequently think about, I was quite weirdo kid. I can't remember why I wanted those in first place. I didn't even play with them. :"D

    10. Before I was drawing a lot especially characters but stopped after I got a problem with my wrist. Staying 3 months unable to draw or play flute harm the skills... My dolls allowed me to find new way to craft wings, armors, horns, etc. They are also a part of my photography hobby. I need them like a painter needs its brushes.
I still enjoy a good novel and video game once in a while, same with writing poetry.

It's very interesting to read about others' hobby, a lot share things in common.

    11. Nope, my true passion is making design. From there it goes to my hobbies from drawing, painting, and the latest is BJD!

    12. My passion is world-building. As a kid, I used to draw comics with borrowed characters interacting with original characters. After that I shifted to writing. Then I began to collect anime figures and began enjoy photographing them. Through photographs, it's like I am seeing them existing in a different world. (Since I haven't owned a BJD yet), I expect I will experience similar feeling as a anime figure if not better.

    13. i started collecting transformers back in 1984, and have amassed a very large collection. i'm hooked on the obscure japanese g1 series, and try to find bargains, and do restoration. my grails right now are blue bacchus and a liokaiser set, but the prices are outrageous.
i also collect sailor moon stuff, star trek figures and memorabilia including autographs. i never planned on the autograph part, but i ended up going to a trek con last year and met a lot of my favourite stars.
      and i write, occasionally.

    14. My answer is fairly similar to a lot of people. I draw, paint, play video games and collect novels and graphic novels/manga. I also like to collect video game artbooks. I prefer them over a lot of other artbooks because they tend to involve a lot of world building which i absolutely love

    15. Bjds are my newest Hobby but they serve as a base for me to practice my sewing and crocheting hobbies on. I also game and draw and enjoy AM Dram XD

    16. Let's see, I have always liked BJD *w* Prior to owning one, I spent most of my time writing poems, reading, photography, anime/manga and digital drawing. Now that I have a doll, even more time is allocated to photography and sewing / other BJD related crafts XDD It's taking over most of my life now lol haha :P but I enjoy it nevertheless!

    17. well, i think my first toy(i really mean that time i was age of 7 and i really treat as TOY) is actually a BJD, but it wasnt resin dolls. it was a doll with actually ball joint , hand and legs are all moveable, just like Ball JOint.
i fall in to BJD when the moment i saw the great pictures taking by some photographers! they are amazing, and i fall to this hobby...
slowly, i fall on miniature, and started to DIY on them, and trying to make some miniature for my dolls.
i really wish to have make them a mini space which i can put a lot of miniatures.. in progress of making this dream come true!

    18. My other hobbies are reading, drawing, playing video games, collecting comic books, anime, collecting figures, and collecting fashion dolls (Monster High and Ever After High). All of these hobbies came before collecting BJDs. :) It's a year this month that I've been collecting BJDs

    19. That's a hard question. I was exposed to the hobby very early (in grade school) on Ebay. The doll was probably Volks, and although she was very beautiful, and the photography made her more so, she was done in an idealized form, with an unrealistic eye/nose/mouth ratio, so not exactly my taste. I remember feeling guilty even being on the page, as the beginning bid was set far over one thousand dollars--more money than I had ever seen written and offered for something before. The doll made me think, though, that I might be interested in "shelling" some of my favorite characters into dolls, and I began lurking on bjd websites as well as sites for action figures and other multi jointed fashion dolls--which was very limited--this was before monster high and there was only jenny and momoko. I hated that they were not as customizable, but as I learned that faceups and blushing can rub off and that resin can yellow, I became wary of anything made out of resin.
I had always been a sewer (I've made my Halloween costume by myself every year since 3rd grade), and I think the size of a doll appealed to me because it allowed me to make more ambitious and impractical costumes for something without the storage space necessitated by historical recreation. (I'm laughing as I post this, as my room is currently cramped due to a full-scale elizabethan dress in the corner--those farthingales take up a lot of space.)
Unfortunately, action figures are less customizable than bjds (in my opinion), and are far less flexible (in the respects that I care about). After spending some time focused on volks dollfies (especially the neo series), Hottoys, Pullips (who knew that my doll tastes would change so much), and Ashley Wood, I came back to bjds, probably because I became more comfortable with the price (and had the ability to pay for it myself). I guess I finally realized that the bad hobby offered more customizability and a greater size (important with increasingly-detailed costuming--sometimes for smaller dolls you just can't find the fabric weight you require).

    20. My hobbies are bjd's (of course), sewing, drawing, art, anime, manga, painting, video games, and roleplay. I also collect dragons and Japanese/chinese items. one of my favorite hobbies is to write stories and make original characters who I like to create a whole background story's for.
