Is collecting BJD's your only hobby? Which hobby came first?

Jun 23, 2014

    1. Could not afford to indulge my love of dolls until retirement (I have loved miniatures/dolls forever - I would have bought EVERYTHING from American Girl when my kids were growing up if I'd had the $$$).
My hobbies/geek pursuits. Well. I'm an original Trekkie. Watched TOS when it aired. Although my first fandom was the Beatles (yep, I was a preteen when they hit the US) & I also was a Luv Ya Illya girl.... My love of SF has kept going - I am right now also a Browncoat, Scaper & a Whovian - my love of Doctor Who goes back to finding out that Paul (see above) loved the show....
I'm a costumer - have been since my mom told me I had to make my own Halloween costume - she taught me how to sew when I was 8 - so I made Barbie clothes as well. I continued to sew - I shock my friends from time to time by telling them I was the Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow which tends to put at least one person on the floor every time....
I dance. I started bellydancing to Meet the Beatles (there's a theme here...) - one of my friends, who was Greek-American, had a friend whose mother came from Jordan & could hold a jewel in her belly button while doing belly rolls. We all had to learn LOL
I used my costuming skills to make beledi costumes for me & others.
I got into Tolkien in my teens, heard about Dungeons & Dragons at college, & then about the SCA - which I joined. That's the Society for Creative Anachronism. I got my Award of Arms by dancing for the Prince of the Mists out in Monterey, California during the 12th Night celebrations :D I also studied Medieval Literature in college (I'm an Arthurian nut & Tolkien freak - the word 'hobby' is a bit too tame for my attachments to those 2 subjects).
I also sing. I've been in several madrigal groups - I'm a coloratura soprano who apparently (according to at least 2 of my musical directors) sounds like a choirboy soprano... I did a stint as a member of a symphony choir, as well.
I'm an anime enthusiast & love Korean dramas but don't know as those are hobbies. I also write, but again, not a hobby but more a vocation...
Most of my hobbies are incorporated into the BJD one now - photography (which I loved as a teen), costuming, story-telling...

      I'm a geek, pure & simple LOL

    2. I have tons of hobbies before I joined the bjd community just a few months ago XD I'm actually a huge kpop fanatic (bias group is BTS) and anime otaku (yaoi woot woot) so anyone who was in those same fandoms as me I will love you till the ends of the earth ^3^ Ooh I also love cooking too :D

    3. BJD's/doll collecting isn't my only hobby but it is the one that I'm focusing the most attention on at the moment. It covers a lot of related hobbies I have (craft making, photography, writing, etc.) so for now…I'm pretty content with it.

    4. I have a lot of hobbies.
I think that the main one, and first one, must be drawing. I've been drawing for a long time, and have recently started drawing digitally.
Another one is sewing, which also comes in handy when you don't want to pay a lot of money for doll clothes.
About four years ago i stumbled upon Pullips, and that is how I got into the doll hobby.
Sometime in 2013 i started experimenting with making my own dolls out of polymer clay, but haven't yet made a successful one.

That is about it for my main hobbies, but i do a whole lot more than that from time to time :)

    5. I like dolls, I kept most of my old barbies. I used to still buy barbies until they changed their face mold, now they look ugly to me. My favourite Mattel doll is Francie though, I have four of them. I also have some other dolls: Pullip, Blythe, Licca, Obitsu and of course BJDs...

I also like gardening, I especially like succulent plants and cactus. My favourite one is Echeveria because it can have so many different colors and it looks like a rose that doesn't wither.
Not sure if it counts as a hobby but I've been into j-k-c-music for years, it was only japanese music at first but then I started listen to korean and chinese as well... if you looked at my mp3 you'll notice I have japanese visual kei along with korean idols, chinese singers and american metal... I also quite like classical music (especially piano and violin pieces) and opera, but I don't keep those in my mp3 XD
I like baking cakes, I'm vegan so some ingredients may be tricky to bake and I'm constantly learning new things.

I forgot to say I also crochet, my mom taught me when I was little.

    6. It didn't really start as a hobby, rather, it was just an eyecandy thing? To look for photos of bjds and just... drool. XD Only recently then did I make a purchase for my very own bjd! So I've to say, my other hobbies like playing the guitar and cosplaying came first. In fact, cosplaying was what led me to bjds, because the first time i saw a bjd, it was at a cosplay event!!

    7. I have more hobbies than I have time for...

I've collected dolls (bears and other toys too) all my life. BJD's were the natural step when I discovered them (when I was nine I drew pictures of my dream dolls - looking at the pictures 30 years on, they're BJD's. My drawing skills weren't very advanced but they're good enough to see all the joints carefully drawn in all the right places). BJD's entered the picture (for me) about 10 years ago, but I still collect other toys and dolls too.

But I've also sewn since I was small (making dolls, bears, and dolls clothes, and dabbling in making and dressing porcelain dolls for a while), started making costumes for SF conventions when I was in my teens and historical costumes for reenactment and living-history events since my early 20's (sometimes making special-occasion dresses and wedding dresses for friends ever since I started making clothes and costumes).

I draw a bit, and have illustrated fan fiction, fanzines, Filk songbooks & conventions PRs, and my own articles on costuming basics. I've written my share of Fan-Fic (mostly Pern fandom) but my attempts at illos were probably better than my fiction-writing efforts..{grin!}.

I knit a bit and I've dabbled in beadworking, embroidery, book-binding, dolls houses/miniatures, precious-metal clay and a number of other crafts with varied levels of skill/success - many of which I set aside (through lack of time) after the first flush of enthusiasm dried up...

My doll-making and collecting activities went into semi-retirement for about 8 years during the heyday of my historical reenactment hobby (which coincided with living in a flat that was mostly building-site as I slowly saved up for the necessary renovations so my dolls were nearly all in storage).

    8. Yes, but I have been a doll collector for most of my life. It's always been my biggest/main hobby and I don't think that will ever change.

    9. It'd not my only hobby, I am an illustration student so one of my main hobbies is ofcourse doing artwork. When it comes to my art I will try anything and everything I can get my hands on. I also used to sing a lot but I developed stage fright. I'm a gamer but the amount I play games fluctuates nower days. I'm sure I could add more but I would be here all day xD

    10. It used to be that drawing was my main hobby, but I haven't picked up a pencil in a couple of years.

    11. I collect Kpop (Korean Pop) albums! before I new BJD's even existed. But now i have stopped so i can get BJD stuff XD i get a couple of albums now and then but not as many as i use to get. Only get the ones from my fave groups now.

    12. I have 2 hobbies. BJD's and Ever After High dolls. I have an 11 year old little girl who collect Monster High and EAH so it makes it extra fun for her that I like to play with dolls. However, she is not allowed to take my dolly's out of the box lol One big reason why I am able to continue to collect EAH is because they are cost no where close to BJD's.

    13. I have a lot of hobbies, though I suppose collecting has always been a hobby of mine. I collect all sorts of things for varying periods of time, though it's only been recently that I haven't been ashamed to indulge in my passion of collecting plush soft things. I think it's because I've finally gotten to the point where I don't much care what other people may think, so long as I'm doing what makes me happy and I'm not hurting anyone.

    14. I'd say pets and drawing comes before my bjd's. I wish I could spend some more time with my bjds because i really want to try sewing clothes and make jewellery for them etc. but most of what i need is online and what's online is expensive. (the shipping fees are just too much usually)

    15. My main hobbies are writing, and video games. I feel relatively fortunate that I don't have super expensive hobbies, but I'm sure if I counted how many games I purchased in a year I'd probably cry!

At least writing is always free! ^^

    16. I have a great deal of hobbies that came before the BJD hobby. One hobby in particular though lead me to finally take the next step and become a part of the BJD hobby, that hobby being Lolita fashion. Lolita fashion is how I came across BJD's in the first place, so I am very thankful. Now that I have been able to outfit myself with frilly goods I am more open and ecstatic to spoiling my doll. Many of my current hobbies, such as my interest in writing, drawing, sewing, photography, fashion and the like. In addition to these hobbies I also enjoy anime and manga, video games and cosplay! I look forward to integrating the BJD hobby into these interests as well.

    17. I collect other types of dolls but bjd dolls are so wonderful I'm very excited to have found them.

    18. I have a few hobbies, all of them being older than the BJD hobby, since I got my first doll fairly recently, and have only 2 at the moment. I've drawn since I could hold a pencil, and after that I started to branch out into silkscreening/printmaking. Right now I am really into carpentry, and I just got a router and router table which is very exciting. I've made most of the furniture in my house since I don't want to spend money on ikea stuff that'll fall apart in a couple years, and also don't want to shell the big $ for high quality solid wood furniture. So I make my own! I also design and build saltwater aquarium systems from the ground up, which is really difficult and can be a total mindf¢k at times. It also ties in with the carpentry thing.
I enjoy the BJD hobby because there is a lot less heavy lifting involved than with my other two hobbies. I guess that's why I don't think 80cm SD sized dolls are so big and heavy, because comparatively, hauling a 4'x8' sheet of oak ply around, or 2 five gallon jugs of saltwater is really a much more difficult task! BJD collecting/creating is definitely a more relaxing hobby than some of my others!

I suppose I could also add to this list road biking as a hobby, although for a long time it was more of a necessity than a hobby. I lived in NYC for a long time and I biked everywhere as a commuter while I was there. From that came bicycle repair and building, and I worked at a bike shop for a period of time and participated in team rides. Last but not least, I played violin for around 14 years. I am from the US, but I got to tour eastern europe with my orchestra. It was fun, but a lot of work!

    19. I have many different hobbies and interests. I've been playing video games since I was 6 years old - started with the old Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64. I still love Nintendo games (especially Mario and Zelda), but I'm more into Playstation games now. I really like RPGs like Elder Scrolls and Dragon Age. I also read a lot of books. I used to be a big fan of manga and anime - it is what introduced me to BJDs. The first time I saw one was at a convention in 2006 and it really caught my eye.
I like being creative and used to draw, paint and write. Unfortunately, I don't really do any of those things anymore, which is kind of sad, because I really enjoyed it. School stuff and work takes too much of my time... I'm hoping that the BJDs might become a new kind of creative outlet for me.
Design is another interest of mine. Both furniture, interior and product design. I've always been fascinated by technology and for a time I studied Digital Design. I've spend way too much money on decorating my home and on computer stuff and gadgets. Having so many expensive hobbies is actually quite a problem for me - getting into the BJD hobby has not made that any easier :sweat

    20. I have a ton of hobbies ^^ I love trying new crafts. I've done quite a few. Writing, drawing, digital art, sewing, jewelry making, taking care of my pets are a few I can think of off the top of my head. Basically anything to do with designing. I would love to have a nice garden one day as well. Also playing video games, mostly I like the character creating aspects so it's no wonder that I adore BJDs! Definitely a great creative outlet. And I can actually hold them in my hand unlike in video games the character will just be pixels.
