Is your doll part of an elaborate "world"?

May 30, 2009

    1. Most of my dolls do their own thing but I have one group that represents an inner city classroom. Getting together the wardrobe and accessories to make them look like regular kids has been harder than you'd think.

I am just starting to develop a fantasy world for my BJDs. I just started collecting them and I have been watching their personalities come out.

    2. My dolls are all based on characters from a story I'm writing, so yes, definately! What's really bad about this is I'm starting to aquire all my characters at an alarming rate, because if I get one character in doll form, then I need this one and so on...it's getting expensive, oh dear oh dear oh dear...this is why they were originally supposed to be Hujoos, not expensive resin dolls ^_^;;

    3. Um no. They sit in the corner and wait for me to fiddle with them. I might give them names and lil identities but im not going to create an entire world for them. More power to you if you do though but there you go. =)

    4. I guess I have a loose idea of a story, but not really; I'm too old for that heehee :P 3 of them are based on warcraft characters that I used to play when I had more time so I suppose they have a story that Blizzard created and I have 'feelings' for their characters; if that makes any sense at all. I just have the dolls of sort of embodiments of things that interest me or I like really. I'm particuarly in love with YO's and would love more of them, but I think that's because I'm a soppy mum IRL and I just adore children :)

    5. I would say yes, I have a little place over the rainbow for the dolls, and the imaginary world they livein. Once I began collecting, I wasn't really choosey about size, type of doll, as long as they seemed to fit the character. This may drive others crazy, but hey, all the different dolls get along...lol. Check my Pumpkin Hill Studios blog to see what I mean.

I still have dollies arriving and plans for other characters, they have to arrive according to the wallet. One of the goals is to do a schoolroom scene- for the bjd's who need their own teacher or governess, and the 'other' dollies like the American Girls, who already have a headmistress of the Academy. It is harder than you think to find Victorian schooldresses- the desks were easy off of Ebay. So right now my projected adult characters I need an SD doll for the character I am developing.

Many of the characters are developed from my preferences, imagination, and fit in with time periods I am fascinated with historically, etc. My fashion dolls in 1:6 scale have their own blog. The bjd Tinies livein the houses, so they live on the Hill in the 'Patch as well. I use my favorite msd to be my assistant who helps me blog all of this just for fun....

    6. No, my dolls just kind of sit there and look pretty. I'm not into character building, RP or creating stories or any of that so the idea doesn't really intrigue me. It actually wierded me out a little when I first got into BJDs several years ago but I'm kind of used to it now and accept that I seem to be in the minority as someone who does not do that in this hobby.

    7. Not the two I have currently~
Their from the same 'story', which happens to be set in our world. Just, it takes place on the opposite side of the continent I live on.

    8. My two boys which I will buy if I have collected all the money, will have story and of course a own world for them.
Setting is a fantasy land, with magic, demons, angels and so on. At the moment I'm writing their story down, it really makes fun! :)

Since I'm bad at drawing, writing and dolls are a great way for me to be creative and form my own characters like I see them in my mind. And it's good for me - at work I need to be really creative, so this is always a inspiration for me.

It's good to read, that so many people also write storys or create them on their own characters! :D

    9. Is Boston an elaborate world?

    10. I definitely have a whole little world for my dolls. I don't have all of the dolls yet, but they are all on my wishlist and I have back stories for them all. (even so deep as to want yonger versions of 2 of my characters.)
I have it set up so all the different styles (normal resin humans, anthro's, and fantasies) interact.
I don't know anybody else who is into the hobby, so my dolls don't interact with other peoples, but if I did it would be possible they would.

    11. Is your doll part of an elaborate "world" or set-up?
All my BJD are part of a combination of an already given elaborate "world" or set-up (Where most of their characters came from) and my own imagination's one.

Perhaps including other peoples dolls as well?
A long ago until now I used to role-play my BJD a lot. The other BJD on the game were part of their world as well. I really miss role-playing them.
A friend of mine has the older brother of the captain of my crew in BJD therefore a fact he is also a part of their world and a member of the family.
In every BJD meeting up, when I take photos of my BJD with others I cannot help, but think they are meeting in their story so are part of their world too.

If not, does this idea intrigue you?
Everytime I know of BJD from people I meet, in person or in the Internet, I wonder how mine and those from other people I am discovering would interact.

    12. Is your doll part of an elaborate "world" or set-up?
Yeah, it is. It also goes into my own little world (kinda larp), they are one and the same, sort of.

Perhaps including other peoples dolls as well?

Maybe if someone wanted to but, for now its all mine.

If not, does this idea intrigue you?
      I dont know in all honesty. I dont really think about other peoples dolls that much ^^;

    13. You bet.
She's from the country Saren on the planet Mahira.
Most of my other characters are from the planet Mahira as well

This is the world map for the planet.
In the future, I plan on having more dolls that are from the different countries and such.

    14. All the dolls I want are part of the same 'world' that I'm writing. Hoping the dolls will help me make the characters I'm creating become more 'real' and less 'flat'

    15. My first doll is, sorta. He was a planned character for a story I was writing, before the computer said story was on crashed. He never made it onto paper but when I ordered my first doll and was looking through wigs I might want for him I came across one and thought, "That's gotta be Tovarious!" So I ordered my white skinned doll and the silver wig and when he didn't come with blue eyes I ordered bright blue eyes for him because his race is supposed to be vastly colorless except for their almost surreal, bright blue eyes. So he was "born" as a doll and never on paper. Then I RPed with him for awhile and his character grew and grew.

My second doll didn't have a pre-thought-of character to begin with. I thought I'd need to have him in my hands to decide what his name was and what color hair I might want and what his personality would be. Well now I've got everything down but the personality, really. As I've been thinking about him as I make my payments to bring him home, he's gotten the name Jaden and I know he's a wolf boy (not a werewolf. He will always have his wolf tail and I'm going to do his face-up to give him wolfish eyes and other than that he's completely human in appearance) but he still only has a very vague personality. And I don't plan on writing a story for him, but perhaps I'll RP with him at some point to work out his character better.

The 16cm bunny that's coming with him as part of the 1 year anni. event on Doll Leaves had a character. I make anthro characters for all of my pets because they're fun to draw and I had a rabbit named Alice that died recently so I'm immortalizing his anthro character in doll form. Plus Alice is just a really fun characters and one I enjoy drawing and writing for so I'm thrilled that soon I'll have a doll for him that I can do even more with. I already have so many plans for him.

    16. every one of them is a part of a 6 novel series that takes place here on earth and a weird faerieland

    17. Nope. I have one doll on the way, and I just fell in love with his sculpt. I kinda make it up as I go, I guess haha. There are many other dolls I want, but I don't have a story or character which they represent. I enjoy coming up with stories later though :)

    18. Yes, and the story is incredibly long. I came up with the idea of the world that most of my dolls are a part of before I purchased my first BJD, and had to carefully decide which characters from that world I wanted to give resin counterparts to. I currently have 8 full dolls with a 9th on the way and 7 of those are from my Hollow storyline that I've been working on. For me, the characters of the dolls are vital, so having them be part of a story is a piece of my master plan for eventually doing manga and photostories of them all.

    19. When I took an interest in dolls, I had no intention of assigning them a character or personality. I just figured they would be pretty things to decorate and photograph. The personalities came of their own accord.

I don't do the "shelling" thing, in the sense of having pre-existing characters to whom I assign a doll. Instead, I get a doll I enjoy and I find the character comes out organically. As it turns out, I did somehow end up with a reasonably elaborate world, where each doll fits into the overall scheme and setting and each has a backstory that intertwines with others'. But since each doll develops on its own, I don't really worry about limiting myself to dolls that "fit," since they end up fitting on their own.

    20. Every single one is from a 3 novel series that I wrote, that takes place on another planet. i did not create it FOR them, though. It takes me a really long time to find dolls that are PERFECT for the characters I want them to have. :)
