Is your doll part of an elaborate "world"?

May 30, 2009

    1. I have around 40 story characters that I maintain, some less developed than others as some are newer and some date back to '03/04 when I first got into my obsessive character creation thing. The idea is that, in general, they live in the same city (undefined, but probably a big city somewhere on the west coast like San Francisco or Seattle, but a fictionalized version thereof). My dolls are based off of those characters (only 3 have shells right now, but I've figured out what dolls I want to be several more once I have the money). So, yes, they have a world, a continuous storyline, etc. They don't all know each other yet but there is one of those degrees of separation thing so they will meet eventually. Also, one of my boys is in a long distance relationship with a friend's doll and the character built around her, and they interact with other dolls belonging to friends although the assumption is that those characters live in other cities (because all my doll friends live back home about 5 hours away) and are not exactly part of their world/storyline but more acquaintances that they see from time to time when they travel.

    2. Well my dolls are from this world, but from different times. For example I have a doll that is from the Victorian era, so she only wears clothes from that era. I have another doll that I consider Fae, so she is kind of medieval fantasy, the other dolls are from this time period.
I have a story picked out for almost each doll I order before I order them :)

    3. My dolls characters are all part of a story I'm writing that takes place in the far future, however their world doesn't differ much from the real world. :)

    4. Yes, they all are part of a world. Although there's not too much of it in detail, as I've only just started on its inner workings. My dolls are all based on my own original characters belonging to said world. I haven't got a complete set of dolls for all my characters however..

    5. One of my dolls is based on a character of mine, and is from an elaborate world setup. I didn't create it just for the doll - it existed prior to that for a written project of mine. It doesn't really affect the doll much, though - only the clothing I buy. I like to create complex, detailed fantasy worlds so all of my characters - in doll form or not - are part of one.

    6. All of my dolls (owned and planned) are part of different stories I've created myself. Unless I'm making an already created character into a doll (I'm in the process of making a Sephiroth for my mom, and have an Angelic Layer's Suzuka planned as a gift in the future), every doll I make is a part of one of my imagined worlds.

    7. Two of my dolls are characters in a series of stories I'm trying to write, a medieval fantasy story. They're my two latest dolls. My other crew sort of got sucked into a friend's Steampunk story line that she hopes to do graphic novels for. My incoming Saint doesn't seem to fit in either. He may end up with his own story line and companions.

    8. heh i'm a minority here, so no. my dolls are just dolls to me right now, they have names, and some likes and dislikes but that's about it.

    9. I'm glad I'm not the only one with an active imagination. I didn't intend on my doll having any story, but when she got here it just formed all on it's own in my daydreams. Her story is my secret, nobody knows it, but I hope it shows through a bit in my photography.

    10. Yes my dolls are. I started developing the story in 3rd grade. The story is so long and complicated that it would probably take months to write it all out. And even then I am always editing past events to suit how I am now if that makes sense.

I hope to get more dolls to represent the other OC's I have but I am soooooo broke right now D:

    11. Yes, they are. I think having a tangible piece of your story world right in front of you makes it seem more real. For a lot of people, myself included, I think that's a large part of the appeal of dolls.

    12. Sakiyo is definitely part of a large story, and I plan on getting her little sister within the next couple of months. My friend who got me into the hobby has a doll that was part of her original band, actually.

Then there's three of my planned dolls, Laurent, Bailey, and Odette. Laurent and Bailey are from a huge TF2 fic I wrote that took on a life of its own, in which the characters became kind of like children. Laurent is a BLU Spy, Bailey is a RED Sniper, and Odette is Laurent's baby sister. Of course, I'll be getting them post-conflict, but... eh. XD

So yes, I like the idea that my dolls are part of a larger world and a bigger story. I'd probably have their stories intertwined with those of others... but I'm still too shy to get to know people enough to do that. XD

    13. My dolls are either based on characters I've made previously or I create a new personalityfor them. I may combine them into a pre-existing storyline or attempt to create a brand new one. Usually at the least the doll is inserted into one of the well developed "worlds" as a side thread - perhaps completely unrelated and unconnected to the original characters of that "world". Creating character and stories is really fun - I'm not sure I'd be able to enjoy BJDs enough to invest in them if I didn't have this story aspect to it in my mind.

    14. Of course, but all of my dolls are based off of RPG characters, so it would only make sense that they would be based off of an elaborate world. However, not all of the dolls will come from the same world!

    15. Hm. Actually, I don't know.

My doll characters are all very important to me, and I love writing photostories for them to explore who they are-- but they know that they are dolls, and so even though their lifestyles are rather like a fairytale, they do seem to live somewhat in reality. I also tend not to have detailed back-stories because of this. They meet each other sometime after arriving in their boxes and have adventures from there. :)

    16. I don't have any dolls yet, but my "wishlist" is built around characters that I want to embody. My eventual goal is to pose the characters to create a "photo-novella". The most epic of epic photo-stories I suppose. It was actually one of the first things that popped into my head when I started getting into them. I've wanted to write the novel for years and have multiple drafts of the different parts floating around my room. When I saw the dolls my reaction went: "Holy cow they're beautiful!!!" to "Ooooo I could use them for my characters.... >3"

    17. I have a hugely elaborate world but my dolls are not part of that. When I bought my first doll, I got him as a blank slate with no intended character in mind. I'm still not sure what his character is exactly beyond basic personality, even though I've had him for two years. I have his brother figured out more but even he is not nearly as developed as I'd like. It's kind of frustrating as the world I want to stuff them and subsequent dolls into is always changing to whatever I happen to be obsessed with at the time. It vacillates between neo-victorian Kuroshitsuji/Pandorahearts esqueness to something more FMA/Steampunk/Trinity Blood/Immortal Rain..esque. Which.. may not seem very different to some people, but to me, they have totally different feels. And at the same time, I want to think of things at least kind of unique within those themes instead of just making them circus performers/sky pirates/princes/etc like so many others.

So I guess my answer is no, the world is definitely not elaborate at this point, but I'm working on it.

    18. Ooo, that sounds pretty cool! To have been creating a story world that long is pretty awesome.

Glad to know I'm not the only one! Most of my dolls are based off of D&D characters and their children, although several are part of their own unique story line. However, many of my characters are from the same world, or if not, they're connected to them in some way. The multiverse may be vast, but apparently heroes always end up finding each other.

So yes, my kids are all part of elaborate worlds. They're storylines are intertwined with my best friend's dolls and for the most part I know their stories from birth - and several have stories about their parents known! I'm big into creating large, complicated story lines. Backgrounds are fun for me.

    19. I always thought that the 'world' for my dolls was a pretty vague one, but when I think about it, it seems pretty elaborate? I guess it's really evolved over the past few years.

The setting is pretty much 'here and now', in a universe a little different from our own. Most things seem three times too big for its inhabitants, for example. Fantasy creatures, such as dragons, exist, though they are rare enough to the average Joe that most people disbelieve their existance.

In that world, dreams exist as entities of varying appearences, intellect and morality. They do not frequently enter the mortal world for extended periods of time, though it is possible. They have their own world, they have their own societies, and they are ruled over by a God-King type character.

My dolls are more or less seperated into 'mortals', 'creatures' or 'dreams/nightmares'... for the moment. All the background has very little bearing on most stories, though, mainly because nothing's ever certain about the world in my mind.

    20. The SDs, the Court, are all part of a world, yes. The rest of my dolls are kinda just doing their own thing.
