Island Dolls Mini Discussion part 1

Oct 2, 2005

    1. I was trying out this wig on my Lilith but I think she hates it! XD
      [IMG]

As cute as she looks in it I think she likes her blue punky wig more. >_<

    2. Heh, funny how they make their preferences known, isn't it? I've tried getting Jerrica, my Wallis, into girly clothes -- it's not worth the fight, really.

I did spend some time playing with Jer this morning:

She still amazes me.... still my favorite!:aheartbea

    3. Lol very true! :) I really like Jer's style! :D I love how the 45cm girls are just no-nonsense, strong women! :) I know that's why I love my Lilith! :)

    4. She's lovely! :D You know Island Doll's pictures on Aggie doesn't do her justice. Those LIPS are GORGEOUS! :D Such a cutie!

    5. Aw, why thank you :whee: I agree the company photo's are a bit off. They look a whole lot redder and more heavily blushed than she really is :XD:

    6. Sweet Abby, skp, congrats! Can't wait to see what you do with her!

I agree, like so many companies their photos don't do the sculpts justice, and the faceups shown usually differ from what you get -- mostly for the better, though. Jerrica's isn't anywhere near as dramatic as the one shown for the Wallis; when I ordered her last year I couldn't find any owner pics and wondered if she would really work for her character. Lo and behold, she came out of the box with this lovely natural faceup:

She is everything I wanted for my steampunk engineer girl!

    7. Well I'm glad her face up worked out for you! She looks like fun and interesting character. Did you sew that shirt yourself? The stitching on it is really impressive :XD:

    8. I wish! ( my sewing skills are pretty basic*_*) No, it's Dollheart; old Dollheart, I think, since I can't find it on their site and most of their recent msd stuff doesn't fit her at all. Her boots and braces are by Dollheart also, the pants are Iplehouse. The Island 45cm girls are so long-legged and wide in the hips, it was tough to find pants that fit her. Iple's JID size clothing works pretty well, as do some things for Volks SDCute line.

    9. Skp the faceup on your doll is just exquisite. Does anyone have any idea which shoes fit the Island doll Amy sculpt?

Here is some Aditi pics since I got a new outfit and wig for her. The wig is a 7/8 and fits pretty well. I am glad I did not try the smaller size. I also got a "vampire" dress for her at half off and though I had to open the back just a slit to get it over her hips it fits really well otherwise. Now if only I could get some different shoes. So any tips on that would be appreciated.

    10. mousethatroars: That's good to know about the pants! I knew pretty much the instant I met Bobo and saw her proportions in person that clothing was going to be tricky fit find. :XD:

Umaeril: That is an awesome looking wig! I love all the curls, they really make for a fancy look with that dress. And I'm glad you managed to find some stuff that fits that's always an adventure :XD:

For shoe's all the mini girls all have the same foot size of 5.5cm so anything that fits one should in theory fit the other. I know angell-studio's minis also have a 5.5 foot, so their shoes should fit, and they're pretty easy to find since they're popular. Dollzone's boys also have 5.5 feet, so if you want more manly looking shoes those would probably work. Shoes I think are easier to find since there's only one measurement to go wrong with, and bigger shoes you can just stuff paper into the toe to make them fit.

    11. That is great info skp, thanks so much. Amazing how expensive shoes are, but also so detailed so I can see why I suppose. I am off to the fabric store, I want to try this simple dress I saw in the sewing section but I need some trim. Also I am going to try velcro, I really do not like snaps.

I do like her new wig but I need something to style it a bit better though loose curls like that are nice too. Thanks!

On another note, your Bobo has such a beautiful faceup, very compelling. I think I would like Aditi to have slightly stronger features, I am going to think about it.

    12. An interesting fitting note... just got home from a meet with trading, and my hybrid with the A-cup body got a new shirt/jacket, the snap can do up, though a little tight, but it looks fantastic open over her tank top... and the label says G.I.Joe.
Don't really have the lighting in my apartment now for a decent picture, but if people want I can get something up tomorrow.

    13. I would love to see some pics thothep. So your hybrid is what exactly?

    14. Ask an ye shall receive... wearing it open over her tank suits Elenra's style better
      [IMG]
But it does close up fine.
And Elenra is a Blue Fairy Niky head on the A-cup body, using a Luts neck ring because I hate hooking to the headcap. I got the head second hand four years ago and spent forever hunting the right body. The Island Doll A-cup gave me the right shape, is showing all the attitude I could ask for, and cost less than the body I thought I'd have to settle for. And the resins colours get along fairly well, I did some minor shading with faceup and body blushing (don't normally body blush, but the character has a lot of scarring) and I think she looks great.

    15. Umaeril: Aw thank you! I hope your sewing ventures go well, I'm curious to see how it turns out. :whee:

What features would you plan on accenting in Aditi? I know a lot of people like to accent the eyes, some people who are really good at it I've seen even imitate the fold of the eyelid. It's really impressive, though I'm sure it takes an insanely steady hand.

thothep: That's a really interesting hybrid to see, she looks really well proportioned too, no crazy bobble-headedness or anything :XD: I'm glad that you've found something that works for what you had in mind. I've got a few bluefairy sculpts on my watch list, but now that I know there's a much more pose-able body for them, I think they'll be moving up in rank (single jointed dolls just don't look like as much fun to me). Was it too hard to make the head fit onto the body, or was it pretty straightforward?

    16. As far as the work for hybriding her, I had to take the s-hook off the elastic because it doesn't quite fit the hole in the BF head, and I stuck a kips on the neck and the Luts neck donut in the head to hold the s-hook nicely. Eventually I'll be adding magnets to hold her headcap, but right now it's taped in place (was held by eye putty, but her brother needed the putty). I tried hooking to the headcap, but posing wasn't as good.
I have one single jointed doll, four double jointed, and a Domuya Flexi-body (and half my crew are hybrids)... much as I do respect that my single jointed body is the most reliable stander of the crew, I doubt I'll ever get another one, I like posing dolls too much.

    17. Thothep, that is an amazing little hybrid you have there, actually I would never have known she was a hybrid. The little jacket is uber cute too. At the meetup that I am going to there is no selling or buying, it's in a mall. That is neat you are able to be so versatile with your dolls. It took me forever to get the back of the head of my doll off and that was just magnets holding it togeter. :/

Skp I would have her eyebrows done a bit more brown, they look a little orange to me and maybe just a bit darker of eyeliner and bit more on the lips. The look a bit orange in the pic and they are not but I like it when the lips have a bit of variation in color. Who knows, perhaps someone at the meetup might do face ups. Personally I have a steady hand but I would not know what exactly to do so I have no intention of trying anything myself.

    18. Umaeril: Oh, those all sound like really good idea's to me. It all depends on what look you want I guess. Hopefully you'll be able to find someone how might be able help you. There seem to be a lot of face up artists around here, so there's probably someone out there, its just a matter of finding them :XD:

Thothep: Oh, that doesn't sound hard at all! I was worried it would involve a drill or something, which I really don't think I could handle. Kips and neck parts are do able though :XD: I guess that explains why I see so many people with hybrids then, if it's just a little more extra work for much more pose-ability. I'll look into that in the future when I get a second doll, it actually sounds kinda fun. Thank you for the information!

    19. Yeah, if you do your research ahead hybrids can be a lot of fun and open up so many more options. If you don't do the research it can involve a lot more work... I've seen plenty of people who had to sand down the neck, or open the base of the head because of fit.

And thank you, Umaeril. I take some pride in making my hybrids look like they were meant to be. Your girl has a lovely look... I'm getting both a feeling of power, and a delicate vulnerability from her... I love characters who present contrasts like that.
