Just a Thought: BJD Persocoms?

Nov 15, 2008

    1. I would like it! However, I'd need a separate doll to be my computer. All the dols on my wishlist are based on characters. So I'd want one that I didn't already have a set personality or name for to be the computer doll. It would be nice if they were a small and portable size, like MSD or smaller so I could carry her around. I'd be more likely to have it with me more often... but less likely to use it in photo shoots or make clothes for. But I'd use it photo stories with my other dolls (since I'd have all of my other character dolls first.) who would all have a different opinion of it.

    2. I love my BJDs as they are, I think I'd keep them separate from persacons. Although having one with the music recognition who would respond and play a song for you would be kind of cool. It'd be a dolly stereo haha. Maybe a good tool to help set the photoshoot mood? Even then, I think the simplicity of BJDs is perfect. :) ((I still think laptop persacons would be wicked though))

    3. Hmm. Well, on the level you describe, which is essentially a low-grade persocom.. Well, I wouldn't buy one. I would be totally creeped out if Ayris started walking around. I think a lot of people would be weirded out by a moving BJD, and think of Chuckie and stuff like that. But some people would like it, and it would be pretty cool, I guess.

However, fullout persocoms are problematic for the same reasons they display in Chobits. People would prefer nonaging, completely self-sacrificing machines who live to do their owner's bidding over actual humans, etc.

    4. I love technology so I think this sort of thing would be really cool.

As for when something like this could be available? 10-15 years maybe? That's my guess.

I mean, smart technology is already being developed, and while stuff like Microsoft's Smart Table is really expensive now, that cost will go way down as better and better versions are developed. In addition to Japanese robots, the American military has also developed some very sophisticated robots, also using smart technology.

The notion of dolls being as advanced in technology as mentioned in some of the posts is a fascinating and possible reality. :)

    5. I'd love it, combining two things I love, bjds and persocom's, may be a little creepy at first but I'd soon get used to it lol

    6. Well, I dunno if it quuuuite counts, but I'm making a BBB mini into an MP3 player? :3

    7. that sounds so cool :D

    8. A persocom isn't really something I'd be interested in, honestly. Additionally, I don't think that resin would be a good choice for robotic-PDA-doll-type, and that it probably wouldn't be predominantly ball-jointed if such a thing were to be crafted. (Although I'm sure some joints would be ball joints.)

    9. I can see what you're getting at at about how bjd's would be a good base for a basic persocom. they are each very unique and customizable like i'm thinking persocom's are? however it would be a different product entirely. you couldn't make it out of resin for one, you'd have to have actual factory machinery to churn out a more durable plastic mold. I would think the way the bodies move would be different as well to accommodate the robotics (but joints would still be in similar places). But supposing you made this object in similar size and image of bjd's that would allow you to use wigs and clothes for them, that is a thought. But because of what they'd be made of I'm sure the face sculpts would be limited unless it got popular enough to warrant the factory to come up with more.

I would not like one though, I have never been into robotic toys, and I like my computer to look like a practical machine. I also never carry my bjd around so I wouldn't think a persocom to be very portable either. Still, a cute idea.

    10. Once the robots start mving and talking! THEY STAT THINKING! iRobot anyone??? Jk

I acutally was explaining the plot of chobits to my bf and was like "...Thye;re like my dolls. You buy the persacoms and you plan their hair, eyes, personality and then they move and talk and are like personal computers like iPhone and giant BJD all in one!"

I dunno I think I'd want at least none to be programmed like that...I dunno about all of them, Itd be awesome to have May wake me up with an alarm or remind me I have plans in the evening, because God knows they distract me from my real life, maybe they should remind me of it haha.

But as a hobbyist who is into this for the escape and creativity I think having all of them do that would be wierd for me, but deff cute if a select few could...

    11. I would so do that if I could!

    12. For me, I'd LOVE a persocom.... but dislike that technology in my doll.
Because I don't want a programmed personality in my doll since I have a personality already for him in my head, and I definitely don't want to hear him talking to me in a voice that's quite different from how I imagined it would be. Even if it's something I've set up, my imagination changes, so the mental set up changes, while a physical set up would be static. I suppose I could just sit there and change it over and over, but I love the feeling of using my imagination to express his personality and voice.
I would like it if he had programmed poses in him and the ability to hold the pose or catch himself, though...

    13. BJD persocoms would be freakin' awesome, too bad they'd probably cost more than a new car >.<

    14. This idea is creative. I think it is possibly a chance to develop such kind of BJDs. Maybe in a few years, there will be a company will make this come true. LOL~

    15. I don't think you could go as far as make them move and talk (which I think would be scary) but wouldn't it be possible to put a small memory stick in their body and then attach a usb cable to it up through the neck hole into theire heads and out, then plug them in your computer and write a program (for example a diary) that includes graphical elements that resemble your doll (a pixel art version of them) and that responds in a way that somehow resembles theire personality (not "do you want to save your changes" but "are you going already?" -->yes--> "okay, don't forget to save!" ). it wouldn't make you think they really have thougts and such but at least you would know 'there's something inside there'. just a thought

edit--> I found different sites that show how to make a memory stick more compact by casting it in a small square of resin (instructables: how to make a lego flash drive) would be usefull

    16. I think a persocom BJD would be a little much, I mean, If persocom technology was being developed, wouldn't they just start making persocoms? Then you could get a little one like Sumomo. I think I'd just like a BJD that could tell me the date, time, any appointments I might have, save phone numbers, etc. Walking around would would make me nervous.

    17. Hmm, I think that would be cool, but not for me. To me, I either want a normal doll, or one that was an advanced robot, haha. In those two examples, they have their own personality, either given to them in my head or them having one given to them by technology. I think of my dolls as little replacements for people when I'm alone, or want to get something off my chest without actually telling a real person. I wouldn't think of them that way if I used them more like a tool.

And I would totally have my dolls converted into persocoms if I could. I'm very open minded when it comes to robots, haha.

    18. The guy that made Aiko (google "Aiko robot" for specifics) offered to turn one of my dolls into a persocom like robot. He said it could preform basic things, scheduling, alarms, respond to voice commands, talk, do math, basically a pda in the shape of a doll >.>
Of course I'm not so well off financially to pay for the robotic innards to give it a try, but it's possible. Although, making it would most likely require a larger doll, just to make the functioning joint parts fit.

    19. Me personally? Probably not.
But in reality, it is very possible. Think about it: there are robot competitions that use voice recognition, computers already have that in some industries. I do not see any reason why a robot/computer interface could not work for a BJD.
But the cost would be really horrible.
Still, I'd love to see one in action.
