Just a Thought: BJD Persocoms?

Nov 15, 2008

    1. Well Japan is already dishing out 'Actroid' !! That's the one you guys are talking about, but a BJD sized one would be soo cool! I think someday it could be possible, they are working on Actroid mobility. I think this thread might get locked, soon, though...but I'd DEF. want a persocom BJD! or just one like moving and such in Rozen Maiden!

    2. There is actually an "android" in asia. I dont remember the website. When i find it, i shall put it on here.
She is a secretary. She is able to go on the computer and act like a normal secretary. and i think she is also able to answer the phone. She looks like a BJD, just without the joints showing.

    3. I've been into mechanics a lot and I know that a few years ago there was a huge deal with "oh if we could make robots walk, we would have it DOWN!" and when I first found out about bjd's, the first thing that popped into my head was "Well... why don't they apply this kind of stuff to robots?" so idk..

    4. Well, I suppose technically you could do it with the technology available--but you couldn't do it very well. Voice recognition might be okay, as that seems to be improving pretty steadily, but robotics are still a little funky at this point--they just don't move realistically, even on the professional cutting-edge end. On the consumer end, anything you'd get would without a doubt be neck-deep in the uncanny valley. It's partially that making them is difficult, but partially that we don't even really understand how we move, and without understanding it, how can we recreate it?

Still, it's all improving in leaps and bounds. It's definitely in the offing in the future, and maybe even the near future at that. Granted, dolls and "persocoms" would definitely fill different niches, at very least until the AI got much, MUCH better. Can you imagine trying to tell something with the intelligence of your PC what pose you want for the sake of photographing it? All I can picture is a disaster, frankly. XD But I can definitely see a sort of BJD-sized PDA making it big.

    5. Personally, this idea scares me a little. I like my dolls to be dolls and my electronic gadgets to be gadgets. I don't particularly enjoy the idea of joining the two. I like my dolls to be dolls - that's it.

To broaden the topic a little, there are dolls that are very realistic in the form of reborns. They are realistic babies and some have breathing mechanisms, others can cry and there are people who take their "babies" out into town or to run errands in a pram/carriage. The reborn collectors have come under very heavy criticism for their choices from non-collectors and collectors alike who tend to analyze and judge their behavior. If BJD collectors were to have talking dolls I feel BJD collectors would experience similar criticisms. It's one thing to debate whether BJDs have souls or are soul-like among collectors (as an example), but it's quite another for a doll forum to be swamped with cynics/trolls whose only purpose is to spy then criticize the hobby on a different forum. This happened to reborn collectors after the airing of a news report which sensationalized their hobby.

I'm not saying it isn't a good idea. I'm also not saying it would be wrong to create something like this. All I'm saying is be careful what you wish for. :aheartbea

    6. i would buy one. i love the idea of persocoms and souless humanoid things that "think" but have that sadness of never feeling or being whole.

    7. LIKE A BJD FURBY!? YEAHHHH. That would be terrifying. And cool. >.>

    8. While the idea is interesting, I wouldn't get one though. Not judging, but we already have enough people in this hobby that are emotionally and psychologically attached to these dolls in a manner that's not healthy.

And creating a doll that can move and talk and respond to them they may never interact with humans again. Which can cause all types of social issues for that person. So I think things like that should really stay in science ficition and fantasy.

    9. Oh my god, that is a great idea! I actually want to work on it! I'll need to make my own doll (but I'm already working on that anyway) to incorporate the mechanical elements so I can control it remotely. But voice recognition and all that.. I don't know how to do :sweat There are other ways though, like sound and light intensity (clapping to make it move, simple things like that). If I ever finish this crazy idea I'll make sure to let the forum know ;)

    10. I'd have more fun if they were little like the ones in Angelic Layer. Though it'd get really expensive replacing their parts if you were to fight with em lol

    11. Hmm... There are pros and cons to having a persocom-ized BJD...

The first thing I thought about was "oh yay, Chobits! =D" but thinking about it little more... This IS reality. Not only are we probably hundreds of years away from obtaining such capable and motile advanced technology, what if there's malfunctioning? Like... robots gone wild. I dunno, I'm quite a paranoid person, so I always scope out all pros and cons. :sweat

However, I COULD see BJDs like a sort of Furby/Gizmo type in the near future. That, I wouldn't mind so much, but I'd personally just stick with voiceless dolls simply because I get creeped out from Furbies/talking baby dolls/etc in general. :sweat

Dunno why, but I'd favor a walking, talking persocom with personality rather than a BJD with a voice box in its head or chest with pre-recorded phrases and limited to no appendage movement. *_* I suppose I feel as though Furbies are animated, sure, but they're not quite to the idealized living/organism level that I would consider as acceptable... Like... it's just kinda gives me shivers thinking about a doll that randomly says phrases when you trigger its sensor by moving in front of it or touching it... whereas, a persocom would react more like people, I guess? :sweat

    12. Would it be terrible of me to revive this thread? Ive been watching chobits lately and a post on figure fm kind of scarred me but at the same time it was talking about technical advances in those life size dolls like real doll. Im not interested in -that- kind of doll but im wondering if weve gotten any closer to mobile unit persocoms since 2009? They probably wouldnt be on topic for doa, but wow they would be cool :D

    13. I don't know. it's a really interesting concept... but someone would have to get voice recognition down better than what I currently experience in most phones & other voice-activated things. Even across the USA alone, speech recognition software don't even work well over all dialects.

As for making them move with robotics... unless we get much, much better at it, I'd prefer not to. You're really running the risk of moving into uncomfortable territory. Most dolls don't look quite right anatomically to start with. Making something move and balance on it's own can be done... but it won't move like a real person, and it will be very eerie. lol

    14. I don't see why it couldn't be possible for something like that to exist some time in the future, but I wouldn't buy a BJD-persocom... thing. It wouldn't enhance my enjoyment of the dolls enough to justify the cost.

What would voice-recognition do? If I say "Good morning!" will it say "Good morning!" back? That'd be cool... for a few days, then I'd get bored of it. I can't see me personally putting up the extra money for a glorified furby. Unless they're robotic enough to put themselves into the poses I tell them to for pictures, the extra cost wouldn't be worth it.

    15. Aah, I would love one of those cute little persecoms, or a big guy one who is really pretty! @__@ And have you ever seen A.I? I wanted Teddy! :0 A teddy bear who you could hold a conversation with. He was brilliant. It would be awesome to have Ein following me around everywhere doing maths for me and making calls for me, but he'd need to be made of something stronger, I'd be worried he'd hurt himself all of the time @__@

    16. It could be possible, I'm sure. Would I want a doll that can move and talk with me and keep track of my banking statement? Probably not.. For the same reason I'd never want a little voice/sound box in a Build-a-Bear: it'd probably freak me out, though I'm not completely sure why. Part of me, I think, would spazz about this expensive dollbot potentially (accidentally!) walking off a table or shelf or something, and REALLY breaking something! Not to mention--I have so much going on with my laptop/cellphone/iPod... it's kind of nice to get away from it to do some simple painting/sewing on a still object--there's this feeling of tradition I get, not necessarily antiquity, but...still. I wouldn't want to compromise that (the same way that I'd rather scribble drawings out on paper than in photoshop).

    17. personnaly I wouldn't like it. because then the dolls would already come with a voice and tone that may not fit AT ALL what I had in mind for it's character :/
and computers you can talk to are kinda hard to use. you need to have a very clear pronouciation, which I do not have xD my mom had an option on her phone that you say the name of the contact and your phone calls him/her and it didn't work so well.
and I know It would get boring very quickly. I had a furby and stuff like that and after a few days you have tried all their option :/

I think it would be kinda hard to do because the microphone might now hear us well through the resin. so they'd have to put it ouside, maybe by a whole through the doll chest. do not want. ôo

edit: and it's weird that now I do not want one because when I started into the hobby I was so obssessed with robots like they have in chobits and wanted one soooooo badly! I still want one I guess but not a BJD one :/ I like BJD for a whole different reason

    18. I think it would be kind of cool, but at the same time it would take a lot of the fantasy and whimsy out of the doll owning experience.

I might buy one for like... a home office assistant or something, but I wouldn't look at it or approach it the way I would my "normal" dolls.

    19. I for one welcome our new robotic overlords :). I would be willing to buy a big doll just to have it be automated. Though I do like the simplicity and customization of BJDs, I have a huge love of robots :)

    20. I'd really like a little bjd-ish persocom like Kotoko rom Chobits! But I don't think we're quite there yet with technology. But it'd be really cool to have some electronical functions in my BJD. Like my tiny could be an alarm clock or a portable usb flash drive or something. Somehow I imagine these functons on my tinies only, maybe I just like Kotoko and Sumomo too much... And I like the idea of carrying them around, I'm not that enthusiastic about the moving capabilities by robotics as I am about gadgeting ;)
