Just a Thought: BJD Persocoms?

Nov 15, 2008

    1. I like my dolls quiet and motionless but my fiance is working on a really cool doll that can motion track you with its head and wave at you. If he gets this down he'll try more complex movements and then perhaps onto voice recognition stuff. It's not cheap but you can do it for not that much if you know where to look for supplies and know how to build the less complex portions yourself.

    2. When I read this topic name, I totally thought of Chobits! Hahaha..

I think it'd be awesome. I had seen the videos of that dancing dollfie..the guy made a robotic body for his dollfie and programmed it to dance and to strum a guitar and stuff..pretty amazing. I'd love to have mine do that... ;o

    3. It'll be really cool if these kind of things would happen but then again, as most people mentioned, we're still far from reaching that kind of technology. Although, I (personally) will feel creep out if the movements and voices are "artificial". Would love it if it was more like in Chobits. *peace* XD

If it was like Chobits, that'll be cool. Cause then, you'll have a "real" companion even though they'll be pretty pricey. Heh. :aheartbea

    4. I think it would be pretty neat! Though i imagine it would be crazy expensive to buy one already like that or possibly mod your doll into one, far more than what dolls already cost agh. = _=;;

    5. I'd love to have a BJD Persocom! I can see it now, a little pukifee moving and talking and fully customizable...it'd be so cute!

    6. It would be awesome in my opinion, but I know a lot of people who would freak out, even if they knew it was robotics and nothing else. It would be amazing, but I doubt it would be completley possible now. Something basic would be possible, but nothing as complicated as in Chobits, not yet anyways!

    7. I totally want to plan a mobile persocom!! :D Honestly, I'm personally ok with it not being able to move (I think I could manage to put a sound system inside one if I could find one small enough; just so they could talk), but my fiance wants a 'real' one. :XD:
But yea, I would love to get my hands on a Honey Delf for this! :D

    8. I would love to have a Sumomo or Kotoko! The ability to interact, change expressions, water-proof, and also hold any possible pose. Oh it would be so awesome. ^_^

However I would want the ability to be able to turn them off so I knew when I slept they wouldn't be running around. Although if it was something like Hoi-Hoi One shot bug killer running around and killing the bugs in my place maybe I could live with that...

I am realistic though in thinking that probably it won't happen in my lifetime. If such a device actually came in to being wouldn't it replace us over time? I mean it could work many hours without rest, wouldn't complain about any thing and if it broke or needed repair a new one could easily take its place. Then without jobs what would us humans do? Would we even slowly die out as we make perfect partners for ourselves?

Ok, I'm getting a little too deep into the philosophy of this question. Ultimately I think they'd be really cool if they were better than those robo-pets I had when I was a kid. They lost their charm in about a week. However BJDs are expensive enough and I could not afford them in this lifetime.

    9. lol, this is an interesting topic, i would love to think that one day in the future people could own something like this.
voice recognition technology combined with some of the very advanced AI programs that are circulating the net these days and put that together with some micro robotics and some epic programming and yes i think it is very possible if someone has the time and lots and lots of money to achieve it now.

the biggest problems would be some sort of effective cooling system for what would be some quite large processors if you wanted one that could do anything serious and not have a huge noisy air vent in the back, a liquid nitrogen system could work but weight is another issue, that and battery longetivity

its funny i have a Sumomo figure that talks and every time i pick her up and here her speak its like she really is a persocom :D

    10. she's adorable, love it

    11. I think this is going to happen in the not-so-distant future---I mean, look how far the Japanese have gone with robotics already, and we all know they won't be able to resist putting that technology in a doll for long. -Shrugs- They're probably already working on it.
Of course... it will probably turn out exactly like iRobot...

    12. people have already made motorized dollfie dreams. admittedly the movements are limited but its still pretty cool

    13. Haha, ever since I saw a BJD made to look like Chii I have thought of this as well. Things as Aibo's aren't too far from persocoms... i think it might be possible in the near future. However I will never get one... I've always hated electronic toys that pretended to be alive. I've got nothing against a gameboy, but I deeply loathe those "fur-real" things. Though if it were a small thing, less human and more like the pocket models from Chobits I might consider it. But I probably won't have the money for it anyway :P

    14. Hhhhhmmm, I don't think I would want one. All of the robots I have ever come across annoy me because they are so far from being the Replicants in Bladerunner that they just make me cringe. I also can't see the appeal of doing it because it's already been done (and very well considering the basic technology) and abandoned with the automata that were so popular about 200/300 years ago.

I just think that dolls are wonderful, beautiful still creations for us to project our fantasy onto, once you start mechanising and programming they would be about as appealing as those stupid singing Billy Bass novelties that everyone loved for about 5 minutes. Not for me at all :(

...oh yeah, forgot to add - Bah HUMBUG!!!!

    15. I'd love to have a BJD computerish thingie, that would be so awesome~! I love Chobits, and think the whole idea is pretty sweet. I just would like mine to be not life sized like chobits, but instead doll sized!

    16. That would be really cool!! I wish my doll could do that sort of thing now. Someday I KNOW it'll happen, knowing the japanese and how smart they are

    17. That would be totally awesome! And Totally Useful, For Everything. Except For Me, Im Poor. Lol

    18. It's probably going to happen soon, but I wouldn't go for them.

Usually I'm totally in new technologiy and all that, but...

If I were to go for a doll, that would already do things themselves, like taking poses and all that... Wouldn't that take a bit of their speciality away? It makes me feel as if BJDs would stop getting hand-painted, but by machines.
Part of their charm to me is, that there is still the skills of a person behind it and reason for them to look good.
It still takes skill or patience to pose a doll the way you want and get a good shoot of it.
      If all that became automated...
BJD might loose a lot of it's charm. To me anyway.

That aside, it's the same with everything that's getting more and more technology: a) it's getting WAY MORE EXPENSIVE and b) it's getting more expensive to get the repairs done c) the repairs will become so complicated or requiring so much specific knowledge, that you'll have to have it repaired instead of attempting to do them yourselfs, in fear of causing even greater damage.

I think more technology would also make customizing trickier. And other stuff more difficoult => water shoots, etc.
Also you'd need some place to load up the batteries...

If it becomes true... fine... but I wouldn't go for it. At all.

    19. It would be a very expensive item...Sure, it wouldn't be for everyone but I see a lot of people being interested in it, especially those who enjoyed Chobits.
Me? I would probably just like a small doll that acted as a cell phone, but I like having my boxy computer.
