Keeping the Faith: When Your Dream Doll Finally Comes Home

Feb 10, 2008

    1. Well, I don't see why you should give up.. it takes 5 seconds to bump up a marketplace WTB thread, and you can even subscribe to an ebay search so if it comes up, you'll be notified in an email.... Miracles can happen.. right?

Knowing they're out there, it's not impossible that you'll get one soooomeday....

I myself haven't allowed myself to long after any limiteds or discontinueds cause there are plenty of readily available sculpts I would love to have, and wont cost an arm and a leg...

    2. I personally Would never give up looking for something If I truley wanted it. I might settle for something else for the moment but I wouldn't ever forget that special something and would keep my eyes open in case it popped up :)

    3. The same thing happened to me, but with K-Doll SP Kill_U! Well, I did find him a couple of times, but I didn't have the money! But, I wanna make him a girl! Hmmm, mabe one day!
But don't give up! One day, you'll find 'em!

    4. Well I've been looking for a doll for a character that I have in the works right now but it seemed everytime I found the right head it turned out that the doll was made by a company that only makes a limited number of heads then retires the mould.
I was especially heart broken when I found out DollTi only made 25 each of their first dolls because I was going to get one originally but I hadn't the money. If they had been around just one more week I could have bought one. They are completely impossible to get now and I only know of one person who has one (and she won't be selling it) :(

On the plus side I did manage to get a rareish head once. I was after a DZ Recall head and I was bidding on one on ebay. Sadly I lost and I was devastated.
I decided to try my luck on the marketplace and I found one (and only one) up for sale. I think I actually ended up paying less than the one on ebay too :)

So you shouldn't give up totally. I like to think that if it's meant to be then you will find what you are looking for.

    5. I know the feeling all too well! I lusted after a Volks Williams for years, and I never thought it possible; I lost bids on him at least 3 times, but I kept looking. I just about gave up, thinking it impossible. Finally, I found one on the marketplace, placed a bid, and waited for 2 weeks, hoping. Now he's home, and I couldn't be happier! :) I also recently acquired a Musedoll Erato - one of my other dream dolls (one of the dolls that actually got me into the hobby); I never thought I'd find one for sale again. I'd seen Thalia, but I really loved Erato. And suddenly, she came up on the marketplace, at a great price! So she's coming home too! So never, never give up! For those determined to own a doll, truly determined, I really believe they find them! What I did for those two was set aside a little money, so I'd at least be able to pay a deposit, and I had a good idea of my financial situation, and how long it would take me to pay them off (Williams took me about 2 months to pay off, and Erato about 3 months). So you can definitely do it too!

    6. One will come along eventually. I'm after an Elysium Axel myself so I sorta know how you feel. My first year as a doll collector I pretty much learned that with the turnover in this hobby, nothing is impossible. People rarely seem to hold onto their dollies.

    7. It is só worth the wait! Every doll I have right now (except for my Peroth) I got because I just kept looking.

My Elfdoll K-ss head was the easiest of all to get, it only took me a few months and then I found him in the DoA-marketplace. Gomidoll Iru-HS is an entirely different story, though. Only 30? were made, 15 in each skintone and I was interested in normal skin alone. I was lucky. A friend of mine sold him.

Although Volks limiteds aren't super-súper rare I do include the following dolls in my story.
I was lusting for Madoka for the longest time. Wasn't willing to pay over $800 for just her head, though. It took a long time, lost various auctions, but now I have her and coudn't have been more happy!
For the same reason it took me a while before I got my SwD Lucas. I only wanted him if I could find one in my price-range. And in the end I did!

There is one doll I'm still searching for and in the years I've been in this hobby I've never seen him in the marketplace: Kanon Louis. But I know that if I stay patient I will find him eventually. Finding him once is enough to bring him home.

It may take a long time, but when you finally find your doll, it is such a great feeling. Like you won a marathon. And that doll will be extremely valuable to you, because of the time it took you to get him and because of the memory you have of the 'chase'.

Don't give up. You'll find him.

    8. Actually, maybe you should give up. I gave up my 2-year quest for the perfect sculpt and was just about ready to settle and not a day later, the PERFECT sculpt was announced. (Yes, not a Rare issue but a simple existence issue)

Sometimes things comes to us when we try the least. ^_^ But bump your WTB thread and subscribe to an ebay search. After that, just kinda... quit. Let it happen on its own after that.

    9. Just keep searching! Ebay, DoA, y!J, just lurk in those places to see if there is any mention of the head you are looking for but don't give up!

    10. I am sure the doll you want will come by oneday. Mine is a Husky. 3 times he has been in my grasp and 3 times something crappy has happened to stop me getting him. The first time I got messed around by the seller because essentially they were just doing a race to who paid first which was very out of order. The second one was very similar. The third changed her mind. I sometimes feel I'll never get him- but I will one day I hope.

My other long wanted was Volks Suiseiseki and I thought I had found her here on the MP but the price was just too much and I couldn't get her. My friend showed me how to use YJ and there she was- complete with the outfit and so I bid on her and won! I am currently waiting for her to arrive and I am soo excited.

      It'll happen I'm sure :D

    11. WTBs really can work--I got my Souldoll Gunun (one of only 3 or 4 that was ever made) from the Marketplace by a WTB post! And the most amazing things are coming up for sale these days, so it's worth doing a Marketplace search for "Kayan" every few days.

Sure, there will be times when you feel like nobody is ever going to answer that WTB post, and you get really angsty about the search. Maybe that's a sign that, for your own sake, you should shift your attention and enjoy something else about the hobby for a little while, then come back to the hunt in a day or two (or a week or two).

    12. Wow.
Thankyou. Everything you say makes perfect sense I especially love all your success stories. I think your right patience is everything.

      I feel boosted now :3

      :dance

    13. Mine is the Alice head Pipoos made ; ; sold out so fast

    14. Never give up on your dream! : D

I know that Volks Rose isn't particularly a SUPER rare head, but it is at times hard to come by, as they never really stay on the marketplace that long, but she was difficult to come by for me at a decent price.

When I finally found her, I actually had second thoughts on it. (I saw her head go for $500 before, and this one was at $350!), I finally snapped out of it and bought her! I don't regret a second of it!

Never let go of your dreams!

    15. Hang in there! Having hunted for a Kayan head myself, the wait can be long(Two years for me.), but eventually one will turn up. Perseverance is the key.

My most impossible doll story was Edward, my modded Hypermaniac Elliot. He originally belonged to Yvette here on DoA, and her site was one of the first I stumbled onto while researching BJDs. I loved the mods and face-up she had given him, and he became the deciding factor in my joining the hobby. Now, Hypermaniacs in general are tricky enough to find on the secondhand market--let alone a specific one. When she sold him through the Marketplace I missed out on him by one offer. About half a year later, the woman who had purchased him (For the life of me, I cannot remember her user name) put him up on the Marketplace. I must have seen the post about three seconds after it had been put up, and my first reaction was 'It couldn't be that doll!'; but it was, and I'm extremely happy to say that now he's mine.

If I can find Edward, you can find your dream doll.

    16. Its so nice to hear all the happy posts on this thread.
I'm yet to get my own doll but I hope my story will be just as successful as some of these!!

    17. I have to add my happy ending here. Since I first got into bjds about four years ago, my ultimate, holy grail, dream doll has been Volks Chii. She seemed like an impossibility. I didn't even make the effort of pursuing her. I thought she was too rare, too expensive...

Last fall, we had some extra money, and my husband offered to treat me to a new doll for my birthday. I immediately searched for a Chii. Searched and searched with no luck. After a while, I chose another doll instead. I was out of the country for several weeks following that. Wouldn't you know, while I was gone, a Chii fullset went up for sale, and was sold before I'd even seen it.

Just recently, I began browsing Yahoo Japan. I'd been intimidated by the deposit system and the fees, but my daughter loves Licca dolls, and they're easier to get through Y! Japan, so I took the plunge. While I was looking for Liccas, I did a search for Chii. I found a Chii full-set. I sent in a deposit, put in a bid...then lost out at the end. I've never cried over losing out a doll before, but I seriously cried after that auction. I then decided to get serious about getting my Chii.

I started a WTB thread in the marketplace, and began searching Ebay, the DOA marketplace, and Yahoo Japan, every evening. People wished me luck, but said that she was impossible to find, that it was a long shot, etc. Well, only a month after losing out on that auction - I found another one! This time, I made sure that I had saved a decent bid amount, and I chose to sell another of my dolls for added back-up. The auction ended this morning, and I've won my Chii!!! :aheartbea

So do NOT give up. Keeping bumping those WTB threads, make sure you're prepared if your dream doll does come up, and, I can't recommend enough keeping tabs on Y! Japan. The Chii I won, even with fees and shipping, went for less than half of what I'd always thought I'd have to pay for her. There is no such thing as an impossible dream doll! :D

    18. Well, to be honest, I have twenty characters all of which have a sculpt that will reprsent them, and at certain times the one I want most changes, (right now I'm dying for a CH Ai Sram, unfortunally he's seventeen, and I'm only just saving for doll three) however, I think my "dream doll" will always be Zee, who's a DoD DOC Si. But I think I only want that doll most because it's a special character. -.-

    19. I have the BEST STORY about this.

So I've always wanted a Migidoll Vampire Miho - The sculpt is stunning, and would be perfect for my vampire character, the everlasting bad boy Shayne.

About 3 or 4 months ago, Saaya-chan listed her self-painted Vamp Miho for sale in the MP - It was "love" at first sight, xD. I knew instantly looking at him that he was "mine." I felt bonded to him already just looking at one picture.

I PMd her asking if she'd consider a trade but failed to mention I also wanted to buy him if she didn't want to trade - a mistake that cost me the head, someone snatched him in the meantime. I was pretty bummed for a while, because I really wanted him. But I moved on, xD.

Then 2 weeks ago I saw another FS ad for a Vamp Miho - I clicked the link, and sure enough, it was the SAME HEAD - The person who bought him that day never bonded with him and was re-selling him. It was like fate! So I PM'd right away and this time I got him - now he's sitting on my jewelry box looking so handsome and regal, right where he belongs.

Another odd part? He just happens to match the headless Souldoll Body I was going to sell PERFECTLY - Strange considering a lot of people find MD resin so hard to match. I'm thrilled because the Souldoll body is my favorite, love the muscles!

But it's really weird, how I knew he was mine even then, and then he ended up really being mine! So never give up on that dream doll, it WILL find you!

    20. I've got a few of my dream dolls actually XD.. Though not all of them were obtained smoothly T_T

2 woosoos, which was definitely my lusting-over-psychotically doll. The first one I somehow magically found the head on ebay mislabeled and the person has no idea what it was. the second was bought second hand from the marketplace with shiroi_yukiko. they're both so beautiful I feel so lucky to have them. though if the opportunity arose, I'd totally buy another one ._.

I had always wanted a breakaway, too.. then luts magically rereleased him so of course I had to buy him XD that was pretty exciting, except for the part where I cried because my friend and I didn't get in to the orignal set of orders but we kept checking, and they ended up putting a few more up for sale a few minutes later. Though, even though he was purchased in january, I had all sorts of problems with a face up artist, and waiting for his body for ages.. he didn't get finished until around november... I'm just glad he's done x_x
